I was coming into town and was trying to pick up macarons that I already paid for for a party that night. I called the shop at 3:30 letting them know that I know they close at 4pm and that I was coming and would be there as soon as I could be/shortly. I arrived at 4:03pm and they were locked up, lights were off, and no one was inside. I am not glued to my phone in general but in that instance, I WAS DRIVING... I get a voicemail right at 4pm not even to ask me where I was/when I was planning on arriving but saying that they were locking up and leaving for the day. I called them back immediately (4:01...?) and they didn't answer because sure enough, all the staff had left. Honestly, I work in customer service and that is just horrible. To pay $40 for 12 macarons to not have the business wait THREE MINUTES for you to show up and pick up that paid for order is astounding to me. A company providing a service should never be this cocky and rude towards a paying customer. read more

The pastries are pretty good but are also spendy. Very good croissants that are priced about the same as West Hollywood French bakeries. To be clear, I'm saying WHISK is expensive for a little town like Richmond. While I've liked almost everything from the bakery, the coffee and espresso are lacking. Its like the places at Newark airport that serve thin coffee and over extracted espresso, along with scalded milk in a Lavazza cup and send you on your way to Atlanta. Its disappointing. I'd rather go to Starbucks. And I hate Starbucks. Service is mixed. I've had good, affable people and then some unblinking Ayn Rand types who don't really speak. Its cold and frankly creepy. Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got around to it. Stopped in for a pseudo lunch on the weekend. Had the Parisian with an iced coffee and chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was the butteriest chocolate chip cookie I've ever had (in a good way). The sandwich was good but not great since I, personally, found the baguette to be too flaky - which I don't think a baguette should ever be. The coffee was good but didn't make an impression. It was my first time coming in here because I always stop by when it's closed. I walked in. Walked to the pastry case. And struggled. Legit struggled trying to decide on what I wanted. I expected for one someone to notice my apparent confusion and help me but I'm guessing they were too busy. I just ordered the oatmeal cream pie which was two oatmeal cookies and a vanilla icing in the middle. It was EXTREMELY sweet. Yuuuuum! It does have shorter than usual coffee shop hours so be sure to check before you make your way over. The ice cream macs weren't on the menu board, but they did have them in - a giant fist sized mango peach macaron sandwich with a really thick ice cream center with real pieces of peach and mango. Delicious, summery, and not too sweet. I split this with three friends, so we each got a couple rich bites. If I weren't so full from brunch, I could've maybe tackled this on my own. Maybe. But it's definitely a large treat. The matcha mint macaron was also large and delicious. The hint of mint really went well with the matcha flavor. The berry pinwheel was wonderfully flaky and buttery and completely soaked through the paper bag with fatty deliciousness. That's how you know it's good. I do believe that I am in love-- actually yes, I am quite sure of it-- with this place. Although they do not have decaf espresso (sigh), they make a real good decaf cafe au lait. Their pastries, cookies, and desserts though are the best treat. I am obsessed with the oatmeal cream pie and the blueberry muffin. I also love the white walls and sweet decorations. But it is even beyond that-- I thank them for having wonderfully nice people behind the register and giving a great new cafe in the downtown area. Dear Whisk, I want you to be successful but here are a few things needing adjustment. I sat down with a few croissants. No plates available??? Congestion. Customers don't know how to lineup and then they are standing over those sitting down. I suggest snaking them up near the counter so they don't hinder people walking in or out. Only place in town that sells French Macaroons! My family is from New York. We went to visit years ago and I was able to get my fill of French Macaroons! But as soon as I got back to Richmond, I was distraught that I could not find ONE single place that sold them. I went to another bakery a couple of months ago (not naming any names...) and they did have some for the day but the outer shell was hard and cracked. Not the way traditional macaroons are supposed to be. So, a month or so ago, when I heard about Whisk opening up I could not wait to try! And oh my goodness, I was not disappointed. I went today after a hike with the sole intention of purchasing a macaroon (or two!) and a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was delish, of course, but it's hard to mess up hot chocolate. The macaroons were absolutely the BEST I've ever had! They were crunchy, yet soft and they were HUGE! I got the pistachio which was amazing. They even sprinkle pistachio pieces on the outside. Wanted to love this place, but my first visit left something to be desired. I popped in on a Saturday morning and ordered three macaroons ($3.25/ea) of various flavors to go. The interior was fresh and airy and a positive way to start your morning. My experience with the staff was limited, but everything ran smoothly. I got home with the macaroons, stoked to take a bite. The boyfriend tried his first and couldn't tell what flavor it was (it was supposed to be blackberry). Just said it tasted like sugar and was way too sweet. He doesn't love sweets, so I just brushed it off and took a bite of mine. It also just tasted like sugar and had not even a hint of the mango it was supposed to. Texture was good, appearance was beautiful, portion was large, but the recipe needs some work to taste like anything other than solid sugar. I like whisk a lot. This is a super cute place to catch up with a friend or study/ work or to just stop in and pick up a few things to take home. Their campfire cookie and whisker (a better/ bigger oreo) are probably my favorite things I have had here. I have tried a few of the macarons and matcha is definitely my favorite flavor. They are bigger and flatter than most macarons, and can sometimes be a little oily. I had heard a lot of good things about their bacon and cheddar croissant bread pudding so I had to give it a try. I would say it was good but not great. I thought the flavor could have been a stronger and I probably won't get it again. I live a block away from Whisk and have been stopping in since they opened a few years ago and while it's not my favorite coffee shop in Richmond, they serve one of my coffee favorite drinks, iced honey lavender latte, and recently a barista took my favorite drink to the next level and accidentally prepared it with almond milk instead of skim milk and it was LIFE. YUM! I stopped in to grab some chocolate chip cookies for the office, and they did NOT disappoint! These cookies are a perfect mix of a chewy, buttery combo without being overly sweet. They're great cold or warm with delicious chocolate pieces in every bite without the chocolate over powering the cookie flavor.
