Whip In is an Austin staple. The real ones know. It's part convenience store, part Indian restaurant, part craft beer bar (with some killer bottles to go). I don't think I've ever been to a craft beer spot with Indian food but it's a great idea since I love both. The Indian isn't the most authentic tasting but it's enjoyable. I mostly love the vibes here. There's an outdoor patio with live music, and overall just chill.
Whip In is a true Austin gem--equal parts cozy, quirky, and delicious. The food is a bold blend of Indian flavors with pub fare--think samosa chaat meets craft beer comfort--and every dish I've tried has been packed with spice and soul. The service is always laid-back but attentive; the staff clearly love what they do and it shows in how welcoming and knowledgeable they are. The ambiance? Unmatched. It's that perfect mix of vintage dive bar, indie bottle shop, and South Asian kitchen--dim lights, mismatched chairs, and live music that makes you want to linger way longer than planned. If you're looking for something authentically Austin and totally unforgettable, Whip In nails it!!!
May 2025 Parking Advice As you pull up to Whip In on the south bound I-35 service road, there is a very small parking lot that will probably be full, and just past that you'll see...a construction site. If you're looking for more Whip In parking, you'll actually go up a block to Algarita, then turn right, right again on Farmers and then you'll see a sign that says no right turn. You're going to be little rebel and turn right on Mariposa against the sign and find a bit more Whip In parking up on the left. Once all the construction has cleared, you should be able to turn directly onto Mariposa, so all of this advice is just temporary. As for the place itself, Whip In combines a convenience store, bar, and Indian restaurant. The beer selection is legit. Huge tap wall with a ton of options and some harder-to-find brews, plus a good bottle/can/wine selection in the beer cave and fridges that are part of the convenience store. Food-wise, I'd call the menu fusion -- you'll find some Indian staples like samosas and curries, but also loaded nachos with cilantro chutney (so... fusion nachos?). I got the chicken tikka kebab and if you're like me and have a mostly Western palate, this is a good reminder that in Indian cuisine, "kebab" doesn't necessarily mean it comes on skewers. Instead, it came sizzling on a bed of cabbage like Chili's fajitas. No complaints. It was a big portion, nice char, came with naan. Is it the best Indian food in Austin? No. But it's not trying to be. Think of it more as a funky gastropub with solid food, great drink options, and the soul of an old gas station. Where else are you gonna get Indian food with a beer list like this?
This place is a convenience store and restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. We stopped by on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was completely empty. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table--pretty straightforward. The prices were way too high--$11.99 for just six dumplings? That kind of killed the vibe, so we didn't feel like ordering much. The place felt dull and not very inviting, so we didn't want to stick around. We had a couple of beers and tried the hariyali kabab, which was good, then left. There are better spots nearby for the same price.
Love this place. It's also a brewery which is a +. Had the chicken tikka legs with naan. One plate is definitely enough for two people. I'll definitely come here again!
Way bigger inside than you'd think! Good deals on cocktails - $8 for glass of wine or beer. $7 queso and chips. Chai latte $5 for 16 oz (a huge steal in this economy)! Haven't tried the Indian food but excited to next time
Though I've lived in Austin for years, I'd never been to Whip In. It's a beer and wine store that also has a dining room with primarily Indian food and an outside patio for music and events. Sort of quirky. We sat in a booth inside and took so long to decide on our order that they came over to the table to take our order! (The set up is to order at the counter.) We had onion pakora (breaded and fried onions), stoner snacks (loaded French fries), chicken Biryani and garlic naan. All of the food was tasty. They have 70 beers on tap so it's easy to find something you like. Restrooms were very clean. So check this funky Austin place out!
I can't even handle the goodness that is Whip In. If you want truly authentic Indian food, this is the place. Note-they've also got other fare on the menu. If you want Prosecco on tap, go. Seriously, anytime a venue has Prosecco or champs on tap I'm a fan for life. I swear it's like they have 100 taps. I exaggerate but I'm not far off. Have I mentioned the stocked walk-in cooler with beverages for purchase? Or how about the coolers and shelves lined with literally any beer or wine you can think of? Literally like being a kid in a candy store. Or rather, an adult in a big kid candy store. Met some really cool fellow patrons sitting at the bar. It's just that kind of place, where you can strike up conversations with people and have a nice time. The service is unbelievable. It's just another one of those rare places where they make you feel like family.
We decided to drop by for happy hour because we thought the idea was interesting. My partner got 2 beers and we decided to get some food as well. We ordered samosas and they came out very warm with a creamy chutney, but not as spicy as I would've liked. We also ordered the hariyali chicken (forgot to take a picture) & lamb biryani. The hariyali chicken was smothered in flavor & spices and came with another creamy, yummy sauce. My partner asked if they could make the biryani hot since the other items were quite mild (we wished the hariyali chicken would've had some spice to it but might've been our fault for not requesting that). The resulting biryani was quite spicy!! It was interestingly saucy and full of onions. It was too spicy for me to handle but very yummy. Quick service, intriguing decor & good food
We saw from their menu online that they had dosas available, so decided to give Whip In a try on a day when we were craving dosas. The place is quite dark on the inside. So after ordering at the counter, we stepped out towards the patio seating. There were very few patrons on the day we visited, but we had to move tables twice because of cigarette smoke blowing our way. Oh well. When the first dosa arrived, my wife was surprised that it wasn't hot, it was lukewarm at best. When the second dosa arrived after a few minutes, it was also similarly lukewarm. I tasted the sambar, and found it rather oily and not particularly well done. I anyway prefer coconut chutney to sambar, so I tried that next. The chutney was fresh, but unfortunately it was too low in salt, and was almost inedible. Thankfully the third chutney, made with tomatoes and onions, was okay; so was the potato stuffing inside the masala dosa. But the overall experience was not compelling enough to bring us back for our next dosa craving day.
Let me tell you a little story. I use to stop here two decades ago to get my craving for some Samosas since there was no Indian restaurant in South Austin when Taj Palace left the location in the Brodie Oaks area. Lol... True Austinite knows what I'm talking about. Fast forward 20 plus years.... I was planning to meet a friend for lunch. She was coming East, I was coming from Barton Creek Mall and we were both craving Indian food. Whip In came to mind. She had never been and said she passes it all the time but didn't realize what it was. We agreed to meet. WOW!! What a treat! The bartender was super nice and knowledgeable. My friend ordered the Tendori Chicken Kabobs which fell into place of the special diet that she is practicing right now. She quoted... This might be the best Tendori Chicken that I have had in a very long time. I ordered the Tikka Marsala Chicken Curry.... Delicious. The rice could use a little more flavor but the Tikka Marsala was amazing. Nice heat, full of flavor and not too heavy. Not cream based but true tomato curry based. I had left overs and it tasted even better when I had for it for lunch at work a day later. I can't express how much I enjoy my experience. This is a true gem of Old Austin and it warms my heart that it represents why we fell in love with Austin back in the day. A couple of side notes.... Amazing selection of wines and beers to go on their market size. It is very dark but I personally think it adds the charm and they do have an outdoor sitting area. Their selection on tab is amazing. I was looking for the Kombuchi on tab but ended up with the Rose Prosecco on tab.... Sub conscience taking over... Maybe... But damn I enjoyed that mid afternoon treat!!! Overall, you've seen the sign as you go down IH-35 and probably wonder... What's that all about. Get off the highway and take a little trip back in time and experience why they say KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!!

And apart from that, they also have a vibey interior and a cute little patio perfect for soaking in some sunlight! And the best part is that the curries are legit delicious. There's also daily specials, tandoor items like kebabs, dosas, and even naan pizzas that I have not had the chance to try yet but I'm hearing them calling my name! lamb tikka masala ($18) - tomato based butter cream sauce with good chunks of lamb paneer curry masala ($16) - garlic ginger & onion jalapeño with a touch of tomato and onion chicken biryani ($17) - yummmmy it's a good biryani Lamb samosa - was filled with ground meat and just not what I expected tbh bc I was thinking about the potato filling Garlic naan ($5) - not super fluffy but you gotta have naan when eating curry
One quarter of a century ago, I was an undergrad at UT Austin and the Whip-In was the neighborhood convenience store. It has since blossomed into a combo of Indian restaurant and liquor store, both of which roles it serves very well indeed. Went to get Indian food and so I opted for a bhindi masala, that is, okra in a curry sauce. I got hot, since the three options are mild, medium, and hot. (Note to Heat Enjoyers: some restaurants' menus go to India Hot if that's your thing, but the Whip In's doesn't, at least not in the public menu.) Wonderful, thick sauce, a bit more liquid to it than many other bhindi masalas I've had, but also had a wonderful rich flavor, with the spices and tomato sauce blending just right with the okra. The young woman working the counter was courteous and polite as well, and then after lunch, I went next door to get some gin to share with friends the next time we hung out. Selection of liquors was excellent and prices were good. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, although obviously if you go in summer, you'll want indoor. Honestly, if you want Indian food and liquor in South Austin, you can't go wrong with the Whip In. read more

Hard to be objective about what has become of the in-walking-distance, best ever convenience store next to Mr R's apartment when we were dating a billion years ago but I will try. Thanks to Brent L, I knew when the half dozen front parking spots weren't convenient to calmly take the next right and look for another lot--there's perhaps a dozen more back there. Since we were here for Monday lunch, parking was not an issue. Front parking plops you at the convenience section's front door. If you walk around the left and towards the outdoor seating/stage you'll find restrooms and rear parking lot ahead of you plus the restaurant/bar entrance on your right. Once inside by any route you can find the communicating doors to the other sections of the business. Stepping inside the bar/restaurant from 2:30pm August parking lot sun was blissfully dark. Actually reminded me of the bar scene in Nurse Betty until I smelled the seasonings and my eyes adjusted. A couple quiet patrons wrapping up their bar tab, conversation-friendly music playing, kind young woman at the bar took our lunch order. The setting is hole in the wall bar but clean and fused to convenience store shelving. Don't let that fool you, bc the kitchen does not slouch. Our table was $55 before tip and without any alcohol--bindhi masala for him, lamb saag for me, samosas, Mexican cokes, and garlic naan. The young lady came over to open the Mexican cokes and also brought our food when it was ready. When we first took a booth the music selection was from the time we were dating. By the time we got cokes and samosas, they were playing my parents' era. We each were pleased with the spice levels we'd chosen and ate as much as we could, taking about half to go. Mr R finished his leftovers for dinner and mine waited until Wednesday. We hardly spoke after the meal arrived, just enjoying flavors and textures and the strange nostalgia of having a meal for the first time in a building that you simultaneously know very well and not at all any longer. The restrooms outside were clean and the outside seating/stage looked like it would be fun in more habitable seasons. After eating, Mr R melted off to scout out an interesting bottle of gin for friends and found something satisfactory. Wish we'd noticed the tees by the bar entrance, I would have snagged him one. It was easy getting out of the lot and on the road back south since we left a squeak before rush hour hit, but locals will already be aware of the essence of timing. There are several different kinds of events you can partake in at this ongoing institution, but for two old folks seeking a tasty meal and memories, a weekday lunch was perfect. This place is interesting in the best way possible. The vibe is like Metallica meets Indian food meets craft beer meets ice house, and somehow it totally works. Casual, loud music, fun, and definitely memorable! We had the Vindaloo Paneer lunch special ($11.99) and the Chicken Tikka Kebab (listed on the menu as Tandoori Chicken, $14), and each was fantastic. The Vindaloo Paneer had the perfect heat level. It was super flavorful and was a generous serving size. It included plenty of rice. The Chicken Tikka Kebab was thigh meat, and it was cooked perfectly. It came out sizzling hot and was well seasoned and not even close to being dry. It was very juicy. The Jalapeño Naan ($6) was a standout. Great spice, awesome flavor. I'm definitely ordering that again! Their wide selection of draft beers (averaging around $7) is a big bonus for you drunkards out there. , The parking: it totally sucks. As of September 2025 the parking is very limited. There is a parking lot out back, but it's difficult to navigate to. Use your GPS, and you should be fine. Overall: cool atmosphere, great food, and solid value. What a chill vibe! I stopped by during their happy hour with a friend and sat at the bar inside. It is pretty dark inside, but it was too hot to be outside at the time. We got the Pakora and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Both items were delicious, particularly the Pakora! It had great flavors and was perfectly crispy. The Chicken Tikka Masala was also enjoyable, but minimal chicken for the amount of rice and curry. read more

The ambiance is brilliant strong nods to the continence store it once was from retro neon sign to the commercial refrigerators full of beer for take away. . The food brilliant several vegan choices . My flexitarian mates assure the CMT dims on par with ant east-end curry hut and yes this is a high compliment. Enough beer and ales for any taste. Servers are amazingly fast attentive. It's a very interesting restaurant, in that it looks like a convenience store and it actually is inside. You can get a lot of different beers on tap and they have a huge wall of fridges with a great selection of local beers and ciders. Not at all a traditional Indian restaurant. They have a cool and dark interior very much like a standard bar and also an outdoor patio with shaded areas. The food is really good and you order at the bar. Butter Chicken - you can get the butter masala with chicken, paneer, lamb, shrimp. The yellow basmati rice was super good and the dish itself was a good portion Lamb Kebab - comes with a minty refreshing sauce. The lamb was super tender and juicy. Masala Wings - I would love to try more of their fusion Indian food. The wings had a great spice and they came with vegetables with a garlic aioli different from your standard ranch dip. I'm not a big beer or bar person so I probably would dine in again, but would definitely order delivery or take out for the food. read more

We hadn't been to Whip In since pre-pandemic so we were surprised when we visited and it looked very different. I enjoyed the decor and upgrades! As an Indian myself, I always joke that most Indian places have the same decor. Not the case with Whip In! The outdoor space is fun and I really enjoy the look of the indoor bar. We went an off night but the calendar looked like there are a lot of fun/interesting events. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5: - I needed a little more "umph" in the food. For Indian food, I expect s lot more flavor. - Service was slow and there was only one other person in thr place. Parents: We took our little one in since it was early in the day and didn't think it would have a 'bar' feel. I do think the renovations make it more bar than restaurant so I wouldn't bring her back. There is a changing table in both bathrooms. read more

I ordered some takeout from this place so I can't comment on their service or restaurant but their food was amazing! I got the mild spice leveled butter masala with chicken. The dish contained a small amount of chicken and rice but a lot of the masala. To be fair, the chicken pieces were pretty big pieces but overall the ratio of rice to masala to chicken was a bit disproportionate. I ended up having a lot of masala left over after my meal. Despite this, the flavor of the chicken masala was delicious and the chicken was really well seasoned. I also got the chicken tikka pizza and it was delicious. They gave a good proportion of sauce and toppings to pizza crust ratio and the flavor was really good. The pizza looked a little burnt but it didn't taste burnt nor did it have any burnt-like texture. read more

So first off, this review is about the kitchen. I wish there could be a second option to review their Beer Garden, and a third to review their "store" separately, because it is great! Good selection of beers wine and specialty pizzas. Five stars there. Secondly, you should know that Whip In is an Austin favorite by reputation from locals. [So much so that in the madness of the current I-35 "emergency-expansion" construction, (because city council members of past decades have been too ignorant to SERIOUSLY consider the future growth of their city) hundreds of businesses will be wiped off the map due to this, yet I have received insight from family, whom have lived here for decades, that Whip In will be spared from such annihilation]. Here's how this is relevant. I ordered chips and queso, garlic naan, and the lamb tikka masala. I have been in and out of Austin for years, and I can tell you that there are hundreds of places that have WAYYYYY BETTER queso!! AND for cheaper; $10????, this is worth $6, maybe!!! I won't lie, the chips are quite good for their purpose, but the queso is TOTALLY watered down (like seriously, I have never encountered queso that takes hours and hours to congeal. It just RUNS off the chip like a thin liquid, NOT slowly, like it should. AND, it tastes powdery). I think their are some money-saving scheme's happening here. That leads me to the Lamb Tikka Masala. Straight up, i haven't even tasted it yet, Real Talk. But just from looking at the portions served, it is NOT WORTH $16 at all. $12 maybe. This little brown box of rice is only HALF-FILLED! WTF?!?!? REALLY??!! Now to the Lamb Curry itself. We all know that there is a total variance of amounts of things that can be stuffed into these plastic 1/2 pint containers. Mine was 3/4 curry and 1/4 lamb meat. At this point, I HAVE taken a chefs "spoon-taste-test" to the curry and it is a nice flavor. BUT, I ordered the Lamb Curry, and there is not enough lamb to mix with the curry. At this point, my conclusion is I could have gone to trader Joes and bought the same lamb tikka masala yet add TJ's palak paneer, and had just as much an enjoyable experience as eating this! And it must be said, I have shopped at WI at least six times in the last three weeks for beer pizza wine, and there is almost no one there, EVERY SINGLE TIME! So I do not understand how in the world they are staying in business! Sorry Whip In, I like you, but changes need to be made in the kitchen! read more

This is a unique locally grown spot that is worth a visit in South Austin. Prior to the pandemic a popular spot to catch bands on the outdoor stage, not too sure about the music situation right now. The Whip In is a corner beverage depot with a quality selection of craft wine and beer. If I may add, a very quality selection of wine and beer. If you want to expand your palette and try a new craft beer or wine, def stop in. Very large selection of chilled rose, which I found impressive. The selection of beers by the glass is also impressive. This is a very cool spot to come in and meet friends, and grab a pint. The Whip In is also an Indian restaurant. The quality of the food is not a 5, but a 4. If you are looking for great Indian food there are better options, but the overall experience here and what it offers is above average and worth a visit. read more
