    Burger and fries
    Rachel T.

This place is incredibly underrated. The BURGER. Not knocking any fast food burger joints but this burger is probably the best burger in Toronto many have not yet discovered. All the ingredients are fresh and you can tell that they're made with love. Garnishes are made in house as well which is so rare to see these days it's great that they're sticking with true culinary skills. Everything put together in this burger is juicy with a lettuce crunch. Now for the fries. I judge a lot of places on the fries especially because a lot of pubs treat it as a drunken after thought. Not this place, fries are not background dancers. These fries are perfect complement to the juicy burger, beautifully golden (see pic) crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The whole meal is perfect in any season. They have an amazing selection of whiskey for whiskey fans as well that you can enjoy in an open air back patio. The patio is like a hidden Toronto gem that's surrounded by landscaped greenery for groups, catch-ups or chill date nights. Drop by and have some drinks and this epic burger!

This was a very small pub on Bloor Street West. The place was virtually empty when we were there. The service was good but despite the fact they were open the kitchen wasn't ready for customers. The food was solid however. The fried chicken sandwich was delicious. Small serving but good. House made fries were good but not done to my taste. My dinner mate had the steak & he said it as really good. Decent supply of draft beer as well. I won't go again but if your in the area & want a fried chicken sammy...this was very good.

Best fries ever man. It's crispy salty and the way it's supposed to be. Beef steak was perfectly pink in the middle and perfect for me

A small romantic pub. Those are the words I'd use to describe Whelan's Gate. Conveniently located a short walk from Keele subway Whelan's is a great first date option. Its two floors but there are only a few choice spots downstairs. I prefer to go upstairs where there is more seating. The whole pub has low, soft lighting and low indie music in the background. Its a great place for intimate conversation. The food is stellar. I highly recommend the Hunter's Whole Wings which come smothered in a delectable sauce of Herbed Barbecue Sauce / Spicy Ranch / Parmesan. I also recommend the Nacho Fries smothered in Tomatoes / Pickled Jalapeños / Cumin Beans / Cilantro / Guacamole / White Cheddar Sauce. They also have daily specials. $1 Oysters on Wednesdays. YUM! Also a great place if you are just sitting down for drinks. The staff has also always been stellar. Haven't been yet for brunch but that is next on my To-Do List! Overall a great first date place or great chill/romantic/inexpensive date place!

Went here with a group of 6 of my friends and we pretty much ordered everything on the holiday menu. It's got a very old English style look to the place and was very tastefully decorated. For drinks we got the berry christmas (which they can also make non-alcoholic), jingle all the way (clarified), home alone, crosby's hot cocoa, cafecito, and muffin mans old fashioned. My friends loved their drinks. My cafecito and old fashioned were both stirred drinks and had the perfect Christmas flavor to them. I would go back again to try their regular menu next time.

Made resos way in advance to the holidays, got seated at a large sofa booth and had to share the table/ seating with another party. Not an issue at all! It's cozy and nice in there but boy, was it dark! I really couldn't see the menu with their small candle light and had to use my phone flashlight instead (haha!). Perhaps should get menu lights so patrons can see what they can order. We got a variety of cocktails to try which were all delicious and so different/ tasty. Also got a bunch of tapas share plates for the table as well. Here's what we got: Fried brussel sprouts 5/5 - Crispy, sweet and salty. Cooked with maple and dijon, topped with fennel and puffed tapioca. Great sharing vegetable dish. Scotch egg 5/5 - Never had a Scotch egg before and loved it. It's a soft boiled egg in the middle, coated with sage and onion stuffed pork and has a fried exterior. The mix of textures really had a delicious mouth feel to it. Hickory smoked olives 5/5 - Can't go wrong with olives, especially when they are smoked and topped with some citrus and herbs. Grilled steak diane 5/5 - A Picanha steak, with mushrooms, worcestershire, brandy, cream and apricot. The sauce that came with this steak was the winner of it all. Delicious, well balanced flavours. Everything here was really well cooked with delicious flavours all around. Dishes are tapas style so you can expect them to be small and shared. Receipt came in a cute envelope with a sealed stamp - the details were great! Can't wait to come back here to try more things in the future!

They didn't have any vanilla which I usually get at other coffee shops but it still tasted good with honey. Great service by Rebecca and loved the leaf design she did on the foam! Now, I'm reviewing the new spot for Boxcar, who is inside the Waterworks food court. Same deal for coffee with the choice of beans, one for straight and one for mixing. On the opposite side of the coffee counter is the Boxcar bar with full selections and signature cocktails, quite different than in the old location with a couple cocktails on the menu but no actual bar. Missing are several things. Firstly, the bar stools at the order counter, with separate tables as the option if you want to sit. Sure, there's the bar attached which would be nice later in the day, but they lost the food options. The avocado sandwich was super popular. In fact there are no breakfast options in the entire food court so far. Even the baking selection has been slimmed. Nice to have them back, regardless, and being adjacent to one of downtowns best off-leash parks really convenient. Espresso $3.85.

Located at Ossington & Dundas, this spot is perfect to chillax or catch up with friends. The restaurant is just right to accommodate large groups, but you would have to make a reservation as most of the seats are 2 seaters/bar seats. They have a lot of unique cocktails available to go with your meal, but if you want mocktails, you can get a customized one for just $5.50 too ~ If I had to say, all of the food I've tried was delicious, but here are some of my favorites. - Noodles ($11): Their soft Chinese cut ribbon styled noodles is topped with their in-house special beef paste. - Opium Chicken ($13): Their Taiwanese style chicken is seasoned well and made out of dark boneless meat that's marinated in their special recipe for hours. - Veggie and beef dumplings ($8.50 each): The dumplings are always made fresh in house without MSG. Getting them pan fried adds the perfect crispy texture! (+0.75). The owners who are usually working were very friendly to us. We had a good chat and I can really tell how passionate they are about this business. I highly recommend checking this bar out if you visit downtown Toronto!
