Went by today and it was so great. We were greeted by Paul, the owner, standing behind the granite counter. Apparently that was his business before the spirits-making -- granite counter tops (which is based next door). Deception Distilling only opened last year. After some lovely conversation, Paul pulled out a few glasses and we sipped some moonshine, vanilla vodka, gin, and -- the pièce de résistance -- the apple pie moonshine. It's so good, and Paul started telling us about the different things people have made with it. Ice cream syrup. Bread pudding. Spiked apple cider. Our eyes grew wider with the possibilities. And yes, the tasting was entirely free. You're only really getting what equates to a couple sips each, but if you're buying it helps to know what you're getting beforehand. The bottles are priced at $23 apiece, but with Washington state tax it comes up to $30. We gladly picked up the apple pie moonshine. They accept cash or card. When we asked if it was OK if we took pictures of the still (which was made in Germany) through the window, Paul opened the door and ushered us in saying we could take pictures of anything we liked. We met one of the guys working there who took us around to see the distilling process, opening lids off things so we could watching the yeast boiling. He pulled the corks off of casks and let us smell the bourbon they've been making. Highly recommend a visit if you're in the area!

My favorite would have to be the coffee liquor, must try! They also offer a wide selection of cocktails. One of the things I loved is that they support local business including farmers by using their products in their spirit making process. He told us that local restaurants like Prima Bistro in Langley uses their rye whiskey to make Old Fashioned (which we have tried unknowingly that the base whiskey was from here). We ended up purchasing a bottle of the rye whiskey which was light and easy to drink. Inside is small and cozy. There are outdoor spaces that's covered. We were told that there are live music events time to time. We will come back!

This place has limited hours starting on Thursday. It was our last day on the island and I've been…read morewanting to visit. We stopped and a tall man with a very deep voice as if he stepped out of a tv commercial. All good, and I said I wanted to do a tasting. It was $15 per tasting, if you purchased a bottle it was waived. They have 3 types. Gin, Apple Brandy and a single malt that is basically a scotch but in the US you can't call it that, just like making a bourbon from a different country. Anyhow I liked them all but it was between the brandy and single malt. The single malt was $125, brandy is $105 and the gin is $75. Either way expensive. I got the most expensive and it waived my tasting and another person in my group. He explained that the brandy is aged for 4 years in an American oak barrel. He said they hand pick and source all the apples from the island. The next batch will yield 132 gallons of brandy and they will age it for four years. Whatever is remaining after some of it is lost in the barrel. Wine, we have to top it off to prevent oxidation but whiskey that will not happen. Anyhow it was a good find and I need to take this home on the plane. I recommend this place. It's on the main drag of East sound near the realtor office on the side, right before the public restrooms if you're coming from the main part of town. It's easy to miss it.
