Service fee is too expensive, most bike shops charge $10-$20 for minor repairs, this one does $30 for service which is 3x the price of the $10 part I got. As quoted by someone who works there service is $1.50 a minute which didn't add up. Plus they don't even service your bike, they won't make sure your tires have air or make sure that your bike runs properly before letting it leave the shop. Not worth it, goto a different bike shop. read more

Owner down to the mechanics are unpleasant, huff, puff, curse, get mad at you for not knowing everything about bikes (if I knew as much as you guys I would have done it myself). Agreed on other reviewers that there are plenty of bike shops, unfortunately no others downtown, that are enjoyable to work with and value customer service/repeat customers. A good group of guys. They know bikes. They ride bikes. They can sell you what you need and not oversell you for the extra features unnecessary costs. When you buy a bike there you also get a free tune up the first year and lots of tips to keep you moving. Once when I was in there shopping, Tom the owner saw that the meter guy was about to write me a ticket on my car, and he went flying out the store with quarters from his pocket and added more time. You don't see that type of service or customer focus at the big box store or even at bike shops in strip malls. These guys know how to take care of customers and so I just keep going back for more. read more

We asked them if they could assemble our family bike for us. They said yes. We were quoted $100 & told it would be ready on Thursday. We call Thursday morning to arrange pick up. "Oh we didn't do it because there were no instructions."..We gave them company info and phone number at drop off and said if they have trouble and need instructions the company would send...so then they get instructions and tell us 2 days. When we go pick it up they tell us it cost $350! $250 more than we were quoted and without letting us know it would be that much more. So my spouse is inside telling them it seems unfair and they say we cannot have it without paying. Meanwhile I am waiting outside with my 2 & 4 year old roasting in the 85 degree sun waiting to pile in the bike and head home (we had walked there). So after some more discussion they won't budge on price. My spouse pays the $350 and comes outside. Then the owner comes out to show us some screw and reason it took so long (while we are piled up trying to get hot, overtired toddlers home). I told him kindly this has not been a good customer experience and is my third time having a bad experience, each time I was quoted and it ended up way more and each time it was not done on time. So then he says "I'll charge you $250 if you never come back to my store". We had already paid! But why would we go back anyway after three bad services!! So spouse goes in and gets the $100 back and guarantees will never be back. So there you have it. 36 years old and I have never been told to never come back to a store in my life. read more

My husbands chain broke the day before we were going on a big ride. The Bike Dr. said it would take two weeks for them to fix it. I took his bike to The Wheel Base and the guy fixed it right on the spot; it was also very cheap. I'll go there for all my bicycle needs. They really help out fellow cyclists!! read more

I am an avid road rider and commuter and have been working on my road bikes for the last few years. I have used wheel base for the last six months and have been continually disappointed in their service and the demeanor of the staff. While their selection and service are both ok, the staff with a one exception has never made me feel welcome. While they may know more about bikes and bicycle repair than most of their customers that is no excuse for making customers feel stupid or uneducated. Their services are also very over-priced, almost double the other shops in town. Hey explained that my spoke replacement cost $50 because it was a lot of work to take the rotor and cassette off, a process which takes 2 minutes tops. Trueing a wheel takes time but don't give me a bogus answer to why a service is priced the way it is. I will no longer be using wheel base for my bicycle needs. read more

Our family and neighbors love having this great bike shop in our downtown neighborhood........ a real neighborhood treasure. I purchased my bike there about 18 months ago. The salesman must have shown me 7 or 8 different bikes; of course assisted with proper sizing; and sent me out the door to test-drive 2 or 3. In the end they found the perfect bike for me in the price range I had set. I've stopped in over this time to have them test my tire pressure and they're always so ready to help me out. Brought the bike in just a day ago for a repair of the front brake. I was told that they'd do a tune-up free....... since they couldn't recall if I had brought it in during the first year after purchase. One day later, my bike is fixed and I owe them $4.95 for that little brake part. They're terrific.......thanks Mike. read more

I bought my foist bike in 1988 from Wheelbase. Since then, I have bought 2 hybrids and 2 road bikes and referred at least 1/2 a dozen people to this shop. Theya re patient, really care and are willing to acomodate the customer. They offer realistic advice based on sound rationale. Tom, the owner and his staff are consistently knowledgable, flexible and always friendly. They listen they care.They will do whatever it takes to get it right. I purchased two expensive bikes from the shop this year. The attitude of the staff is somewhere between casual disinterest and extreme arrogance. I had to readjust the seat on both bikes. The clerk left the cheap back wheel locking bolt from the trainer stand on my $2000 bike and forgot to replace it. The Owner thought this was funny when I brought it back in. This attitude is on full display if you opt to go on a group ride with them. The ride starts at 9 AM. I showed up at 8:59AM. The owner of the shop/ride leader scowled at me and told me I was late and would have to drive somewhere else and wait 20 minutes for them to get there. I got out of my car, fully ready to go, and told him I was ready and would follow them. They sped off. It took me less then sixty seconds to take my bike off the bike rack, get on and start pedaling. I didn't see which way they turned. They were gone. They ditched me instead of waiting less than sixty seconds. What kind of people go on a recreational ride and can't wait literally sixty seconds for someone to join them? More importantly, what kind of business owner can't wait sixty seconds for someone who has spent over $2500.00 in his shop in the last few months? Caveat emptor. My name is Jorge C. I have to say I have purchased 3 Bikes from Wheel Base since moving to downtown Frederick a little over a year ago. Every time I have gone in there, Tom, Mike, and Justin have been super helpful and very informative. They have gone out of their way numerous times to do the little things...lube a chain, exchange a faulty wheel from a Factory order Beach Cruiser, etc...etc.. Good service comes with a price, it may not necessarily be the price you want to pay, but at least you know the job will be done right. I guess some people want Filet-Mignon for the price of a Hamburger. My money is well spent at Wheel Base. I will recommend them to my friends and family. You guys are awesome!!! read more

I have purchaed different types of bikes thro out teh past 25 years from Tom and his group. I have read the reviews below and while they may not aLL BE WARM AND FUZZY, i AM THRILLED THAT THEY ACTUALLY TAKE the TIME TO HELP U DECIDE WHAT U WANT. Regardless if I bought a base model or the custom Madone road bike from them, they took tehtime to assure the best fit and geomotry for my body and its limitations. there was no upselling. and they even spend time with me side by side to view cycle options and how each option differs. the repair department is quite good, agian, i never experienced upselling. They took the time to teach me basic maintenance and how to properly clean by chain and other components. I have been to another local bike shop and relaly like them, but they are way too busy/distracted and sold me a cassette i did not need.. oh well..wont happen again. I think that the selection of cycles for all ages and abilities is quite good. I will keep coming bakc to Tom and his group. read more

I've been a customer for almost 9 years and have never had a reason to regret it. There are other bike shops in Frederick and I'm sure they're fine, but Wheel Base is the one I rely on. I took my bike in today for what I hoped was a minor problem with the shifting mechanism. No appointment, no prior phone call or anything. They immediately stopped what they were doing, asked how they could help me, oiled the cable, adjust the derailleur, ran it through multiple gear changes, and sent me on my way. No charge, no hassle, no fuss. This is just one of the reasons why I like this place. If you need a bike, shop here, if you have a bike bring it here for your tuneups. read more

I took my newly inherited vintage road bike in for a 'major tune up'. One minute into my first cycle, the chain came off. Gears all out of line. I returned to the store shortly after to get the gears aligned. The owner asked me, sarcastically, if I had heard of a thing called oil. I asked him if that might be part of a 'major tune up'.
