YUM! YUM! YUM! I have absolutely loved everything that I have gotten from this bakery. I've gotten their cakes and they are perfect--not too sweet like most store-bought cakes. They also have fresh breads and delicious pastries. If you have never stopped in here, you definitely need to! It also seems like earlier in the day is the best time to visit as they have everything in stock (think like a donut shop) but they still have yummy treats later in the day near closing. When I called to place my order 8 days ago, I was put on hold because the one that answered the phone was the only one there, and she was waiting on customers and she reasured me she would be back as soon as she could to take my order. I waited on hold for literally 30 minutes, understanding that she would be back soon. After 30 minutes, someone at Wheatland Bakery hung up the phone on me. So I called back immediately but the female who answered the phone said they were closed, this is 2:30 pm on a Monday. She hurriedly and begrudgingly took my order, and when I asked for confirmation about pickup time as well as confirmation on the size of the boule I was ordering, she hung up on me. Today was my pickup day. The boule are twice the size I was told they would be. I will never order from Wheatland Bakery again, nor will I purchase their product from a local grocery store ever again. I'm done purchasing from Wheatland Bakery ever again. They are rude and dishonest to their customers, and their products are way overpriced anyway. I am so disappointed in them. If it were possible I would have rated a no star. read more

Reminded me a bit of apple strudel I grew up with in WI. - Bear Claw: 4.0. - Croissant: 3.0. - Pain au Chocolat (aka Chocolate Croissant): 2.0. With a different name it would be worth a 4.0, but it simply wasn't pain au chocolat and thus missed expectations. The crust was not at all flaky. BAGUETTE: 2.0. Barely adequate for bringing along on a wine-tasting to munch on between drinks, especially if drowned in a good olive oil. Consistency of crust and of the inner white portion resembled that of packaged sliced white bread. read more

This is such a good bakery. So many wonderful breads, cookies, cakes, pasteries, etc. etc. Their prices are really reasonable (especially in comparison to the Walla Walla Bread Co.) and their selection really is out-standing. We make a trip here every time we travel to Walla Walla. I wish they had a bakery like this in my hometown! Highly recommend making a stop here -- you won't regret it! read more

OKAY to start the service was great. The kicker to the 5 star is the Bear Claw made with date filling. That sweet is a life changing treat. It is not to sweet and a little more savory but a great married with a good cup of coffee. I will call and see if I can set up a shipping of a dozen of them. So I hope they will try....? John got me through college. As a homesick student at Whitman, my first birthday cake delivered from his place gave me a taste of home and made me the hit of the dorm. This is an amazing bakery on par with the best restaurants in WW (Saffron, Whitehouse Crawford et al.). The breads are delicious and they also have an amazing selection of pastries, pies, cakes, cookies and other scrumptious treats. Their Crispy Sandwich Bread is absolutely perfect with mayo, sliced WW sweet onion and sliced vine ripened tomato. Simple and delicious. Highly recommended. read more

I live halfway across the country, but I wanted to send my dad a German Chocolate cake for his birthday/Father's Day in WW. I placed the order during a very busy holiday weekend, but the guy who took my order over the phone was extremely pleasant and patient, even telling me how they do their German Chocolates a little differently than most and making sure that was ok. They delivered the cake on time and right to my dad's office, despite me being unsure of where exactly his office was in the building. Very reasonable cost, and they even wrote a message on the cake at no extra charge! My dad said the cake was delicious and that his coworkers were thrilled! :) The next time I'm in town to visit my folks, I will definitely stop by and check out the rest of the goods. Very wide open bakery. Not too aesthetically pleasing, but you get the idea that they bake a lot. There are pastries (soo many scones! peach, blueberry, cinnamon, chocolate chip, blackberry, etc. too many to remember) and cookies and croissants. They have quite a few normal sandwich type breads - their 8-grain is delicious toasted! and they have a fair share of artisan breads. John's Wheatland supplies a lot of the bread offered at other cafes (like Stone Soup) for sandwiches and such. You can find day-old products 10% off and 2-day old products 50% off. The day old breads are alright, but I feel like 2-day old is pushing it... even if it's 50% off. read more

Since I moved to the US, I've been looking for bakeries that would sell croissants like the ones I had in Switzerland. Today, I found those croissants at this bakery, and everybody should know that if you're like me, **this** is the place to go to. Besides the croissants, this bakery sells a bunch of other delicious stuff, like scones, cakes, cheesecakes, breads (different sorts) and other pastries, that they bake right there. This is probably the best bakery in town for cakes. Locals rave about it, and for the most part, it deserves the accolades. They do a thriving business in custom-order sheet cakes and wedding cakes, and I can see why: the cake is moist, the icing is light yet keeps its shape, and the fillings do their part. Also, the prices are reasonable. Not inexpensive, by any means, but reasonable for what you receive. Wheatland's also sells quite a lot of bread, and here, the results are less predictable. If you can, buy whole loaves unsliced. The pre-sliced loaves tend to dry out. The half-off table is a good deal, but remember these are day-old or older, so don't expect the same quality for half the price. There's an older gentleman who often mans the cash register. He's a nice guy, but man is he slow!! God help you if he accidentally hits the wrong key on the register; he'll spend the next 10 minutes trying to correct it. I'd hate to be one or two people behind THAT in line. I give him a pass because he's old. Just keep that in mind when dashing in for "something quick." read more

Yes, John's is still run by John, he is at the counter often and his bakers help him. I just purchased 100% fresh ground whole wheat. It is the sweetest bread you could every want, it was ground the day it was baked, so from wheat to table in a few hours. It tastes different from the stuff they make in supermarket suppliers in Spokane or Abilene or New York City. You are smart enough to not live in those places, so why buy your bread from there? Another bakery in this town has interesting looking breads, but inside they are raised with too much yeast or too quickly so they are full of holes. John's Whole Wheat and Olive Sour Dough (a very sweet sour) don't do that. Slower rise, no holes in bread. So there you have my favorites. read more

My kids are here from out of town and my daughter-in-law just came home from John's. Five days ago she ordered a 8 inch duplicate of her wedding cake along with 6 bagels to be picked up today at 11:30 am. When she got to the store there were no bagels and the cake was not as ordered. In addition, the woman that waited on her was rude, argued with her about the order and was unapologetic. My husband spent a lot of his childhood summers in Milton-Freewater, OR - about ten minutes from Walla Walla. He grew up eating John's sandwich bread, not to mention his grandparents still have the house readily stocked with his breads. We were in town for a weekend and made it a point to go to the bakery to bring home a couple loaves to stick in our freezer back home in Wyoming. John himself was there, with lots of amazing breads, pastries, and other goodies. If I were a local, this would be the only place in my book to buy breads. They add no preservatives, sweeteners, or oils and have healthy options like sprouted grains. The price is right, too! read more

If you want fabulous pastries and breads, this is a great bakery. There is a huge variety of delicious scones, muffins, cookies, danish, etc. chock full of yummy goodness. The very friendly staff seems to have endless patience for explaining what is in everything. Get there early for the widest selection. We also love the challah, cinnamon raisin bread and multi grain bread. The others (and there are many) look good too. There are discount areas for breads not baked that day. We have bought cinnamon raisin bread from the day old when it was sold out of fresh and it was still terrific. If you have time, and it isn't busy, you may have the chance to chat with John about how things are made. The commercial location on Isaacs is not the draw, but well worth finding. My entire family have always been customers, and for our Dad's 90th birthday celebration there was no question this is where we would get his cake. John personally took my order over the phone, taking time with every detail. While we had no doubt the quality would exceed our expectations as always, except for giving the decorator some guidelines I let him have creative license, and it was absolutely stunning.
