When it came down to finally choosing a college, Nash and I chose Whitman, but we also chose Walla Walla. And these are Stories From Walla Walla... But in this instance, Walla Walla taught him this lesson better than I ever could. From staying at The Finch Hotel repeated times now, I've grown to be a fan of Livit Coffee, a local Walla Walla Roaster. So much so, that I asked Nash to trek up to the nearest Livit Coffee location to buy me 2 bags of beans to bring home with him. Livit Coffee is only a half mile from Lyman Hall, but as Nash pointed out: to do this, he had to "trudge there" in super slushy conditions as it had snowed the night before. I told him that I greatly appreciated his "overwhelming sacrifice" for my benefit. Upon entering the store, Nash was able to quickly find the HUEHUE Viennese Roast I was looking for. With coffee now in hand, Nash confidently strode up to the counter to make his purchase. Brandishing his shiny new credit card, He tried inserting it. No luck. He tried tapping it. No luck. He tried swiping it. No luck. At this point, he's flustered... And he's frantically apologizing and fumbling around in his backpack to find some emergency cash. While he's doing that, he's explaining to the cashier that he doesn't even drink coffee! That he's only buying coffee beans for his "good old dad!" Nash is now rambling like a crazy person when a kind older gentleman steps in... He puts his hand on Nash's shoulder and says, "Don't worry about it. I got this." "Huh? I'll start with the things that kept me from stopping in forever: Livit Coffee has a somewhat unfortunate location and street visibility that does it a major injustice. Driving by, it always seemed dead to me (nothing visible in the window) and the parking situation seemed awkward and...well...absent. It took me awhile to finally get it together and get in there, and once you do give it a shot, you realize both observations are completely off. Although there are only a few scattered parking spots out front, there is ample parking on the side street and shared parking with the bicycle shop right next to it. As far as the visuals from the street? The incline of the building is just steep enough from street traffic, that unless you're in a rig, you cannot see 90% of the coffee shop. The important stuff: This place is fantastic. Seriously everything I love about a good coffee shop. Starting with the most important: amazing, robust-yet-nuanced coffee. Second? Really, REALLY great customer service. Tons of character and warmth. With most of the coffee shops in town offering homogenized corporatism, pretentious attitudes, or disengaged emo mope, come check out Livit for engaging & quick service, genuine smiles and zero snobbery. Awesome Guatemalan & Ethiopian coffee! It is so well roasted that I bought a bag (actually two) to brew at home, and the aroma when I opened the bag took me straight back to Guatemala. Great little coffee house. We found Livit on Yelp and had to try it based on the reviews. Yelp pays off again. As soon as you walk in, you get a welcome feeling. The guys behind the counter were very friendly. I ordered an Americano and wife ordered a Mocha Fight. I also ordered a five star avocado toast. It was delicious! After moving to Walla Walla 6 months ago, I set out on a journey to find the best coffee in town. Livit absolutely takes the win on this. For several reasons: the first being that their cappuccino is the best -- the espresso is not too bitter, you get the full flavor of the bean, and the cappuccino itself is not too wet or too dry. The guys who work here clearly know coffee well. I have yet to have a bad cup or espresso drink here. Plus, they're ridiculously friendly and kind. For the days you're not feeling coffee or caffeine, their protein shakes and their kale smoothies are rockin'! The service was friendly and warm. I brought my young daughter in and they very patiently helped her to make a decision. The coffee was comparably good. And the ambiance was clean and comfortable. Neither too loungy nor too hipster. They have sort of pioneered their own unique vibe, which I love because it makes them more interesting and memorable. My favorite coffee shop in town. My fiancé and me love gong in Saturday's because they have homemade cinnamon roles that day. The cinnamon roles are the best I've ever had and the coffee never disappoints. The atmosphere is great. It's somewhere where you can meet a friend, go on a date, or work on homework. We've had three different people help on us and all of them are so nice and answer any of the questions we have. If you haven't tried Livit, I highly recommend it! read more
