Enter Coffee Cravings who DOES get it right and on a consistent basis. It's because of this that they are now my go-to shop. The baristas here are also rock stars. They're super genuine, friendly, and provide the best service. They also serve up your drinks super fast. Again, human bean and hot mama's can take a long time to get your drinks out and even just one or two cars ahead of you can take quite a bit of time. But here at Coffee Cravings, they are able to move two or three cars in front of me through with speed and ease. Even when there looks to be a long line of cars, it goes by quicker than at other shops. My go-to drinks here are their white chocolate OR hazlenut granitas with a shot of espresso added, or their black tea. I grew up here, went to high school here, I remember when the Sugar Shack first opened and when it had a wall of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans and it's the only reason kids would stop in. It wasn't really my choice of where to go for lunch during school (I think mainly I assumed the other choices in town would be cheaper and more effective with my lunch money) but I know I considered it a treat when my mom would let us stop here. I stopped in again today to grab some lunch during my work break, first time in quite a while (generally I visit Athena once year, maybe every couple of years). Everything was changed up but I was instantly greeted, asked what I wanted to order, when I told them I haven't been there for awhile they gave me their drink menu and food menu and didn't make me feel rushed. I went with just a mocha and grilled cheese to go. It's not a huge place, but they had at least 3 people working at the time, so I'd say they are on top of things. My wait wasn't long at all. There is seating inside, three tables (one larger than the other two) and a nice seating area outside when the weather is warmer. Probably more than enough for the size of this town. Everyone was friendly and during my wait they kept up a nice conversation. I knew I recognized one of them (and I feel terrible I can't remember your name, I'm sorry!! I am better at faces!) and turns out that I went to school with her son for years. She asked about what I'm doing now, why I'm visiting, where I live now, how my mom is, etc. It was just nice, but they give off the vibe like anyone would be treated with the same friendliness, even if you are new to town or just passing through. Back to the food: Honestly, the grilled cheese wasn't my favorite. It wasn't terrible but everyone has their preferences and I am really not a fan of the pre-sliced cheese, which is what this tasted/looked/felt like. I did however appreciate that the bread was actually CRISPY, so you win some and you lose some. I am still going with five stars though because I still think this is the best place in town for coffee, or things like coffee/things you'd find at a coffee shop. Most importantly though, it's a friendly place, it reminds me that there ARE actually good things about small towns and visiting your hometown. It is also absolutely ADORABLE inside, definitely an upgrade from the last time I went in. One last thing I want to mention, regarding my pictures: I am totally guilty of grabbing food to go and just throwing it in my bag while walking back to wherever I came from. I may be picky about a lot of other things regarding food but that's not one of them. If it looks a little smashed up, that's all on me lmao
