When your food is ready, they'll bring it out to you. Hope you're hungry, because you'll be amazed at the healthy portions. They're just like how your grandma would have filled your plate. There's a variety of different daily specials, or you can order from the standard menu. My recent visit, I went with the Homestyle Meatloaf with a side of Green Beans and a second side of, Mashed Potatoes with Brown Gravy. Yum! Potatoes were roughly smashed with skins on, making it obvious that they were made from scratch. The green beans could have had some more black pepper, but that's on me. I'm a black pepper, junkie. It's my favorite spice. The ambiance is eclectic and the fresh cut flowers on the tables are a nice touch. I hate fake flowers on a dining table, it's tacky in my opinion. The other day I was going on a Fall Foliage Tour of the Riverroad and hadn't had breakfast. O-Jan's was across the street from where we were departing, so I grabbed some Catfish Fritters to satisfy my hunger. They were prepared with a light golden coating. The batter covering the catfish was very thin, so the true flavor of the river fish came through. I was totally satisfied. I kinda wish I would have gotten fries, too, but the fritters did fill me up for a small lunch. Everything at O-Jan's is made to order, so it is super fresh. If you don't have patience to wait a few extra minutes for quality fried fish, you may want to elsewhere. O-Jan's is a cash only establishment, so be sure to have your Hamilton's or Jackson's ready. You'll order at a small window on the side porch, they'll call your name when it is ready and you can enjoy it on one of their picnic tables, or go on your merry way. The Hush Puppies had chopped jalapeños, which made them the best Hush Puppies I have ever had. The fries were seasoned and still had the skins on and that's a plus for me. I mainly was studying what sides were available. I ordered my steak, medium rare and the kitchen nailed it. Typically I order a side house salad when eating at CHT, but tonight I paid an up-charge and enjoyed their Brussels Sprouts. My second side was a huge Baked Potato. That's a big helping of a side dish. I wish they offered two smaller portions as the side, like most BBQ joints do. I asked the young girl working which sides were made in house and it took her by surprise. I then asked if some of the sides came from a food vendor. Then she stammered the answer, "I've heard him say, that he makes them all." I ended up ordering the Smoked Beans. I'm picky about my beans and these lacked seasoning and were bland. The brisket was cut thick and was on the chewy side. I prefer my brisket cut thinner and much more tender. My order of ribs, shocked me. They were the first ribs that I ever had that did not have the membrane on the back of the ribs removed. The ribs did have good seasoning, since the membrane was not removed, they were tough. They had a 2" thick pork steak on the menu. I guess I'll have to come back and give that a try with a different side. If the pork steak disappoints me, I wont be back.
