We came on a Friday afternoon as first time customers. Takes cash only. The restaurant is small with 4 tables and a counter with stools. Drinks are canned Coke products, bottled water, and bottled Gold Peak tea, both sweetened and unsweetened . We ordered the fish sandwich and shared an order of onion rings. Both the fish and onion rings were very greasy with every bite. Nice friendly historic restaurant!! read more

TASTY! A must. Good onion on that fish too! I highly recommend this and don't be scared I have never had any problems.

If you've never had Markos you owe it to yourself and family. Speaking of family that's what you get, family food from a family that's been doing this for a while. Folks that have moved out of the area still go back. And probably will forever or till the next gen decides not to pick up the fryer basket. Heading there today as I'm certain Fish Friday for the local Roman Catholics will make a crowd tomorrow. read more

Marko's Fish House - YUM! - Seafood Near Me - Madison, Illinois

BEST FRIED COD SANDWICH IN STL AREA! Made the trip to grab lunch here based on the recommendation of a former co-worker and I was not disappointed at all. Small, family-owned spot and upon entering the small dining room we were warmly greeted by the owner and family as well as most of their lunchtime clientele. They've been open and in operation in this same location for 93 years! As first-time visitors we were given the suggestion to try the house special fried cod sandwich served on their house-made cream bread. Sandwich, fries, and a drink totaled about $12 so definitely a value aside from everything else. Within 4-5 minutes we were served table-side with extremely fresh and hot food. Both the fish and fries were hot, crispy, and flavorful. The house-made bread that comprised the sandwich was nice and soft with a nice crust. Overall this place was a gem to find and I could not recommend it more empahatically. Go give it a try! read more

I have been going to this wonderful historic restaurant since 1975. The fish sandwiches are second to none! Nice beautiful cod loin with a dipped batter, Deep fried served on fresh sliced bread with pickles, onions, and peppers. The ownership and the staff (Tiffany) are extremely friendly and courteous. It is obvious that Guest satisfaction is their main priority! The environment is authentic rustic And seems to take you back many years. I would recommend this to anybody who is looking for superior food, quality service, hospitality, atmosphere and value! read more

Marko's Fish House - This is a cod sandwich with fries! - Seafood Near Me - Madison, Illinois

I grew up less than a block away. I have been eating Marco's for over 40+ years. I have yet to find any fish sandwich that even compares to it. The inside looks the same as when I was a kid. Eating at the counter or at a table just feels nostalgic. Never had bad service. Food is always delicious. It's like a secret small town gem. A definite must try. read more

One of Madison's hidden gems! They've been open for decades, people come from all over to get them, and when people leave town, this place is always missed! Markos has to die for fish sandwiches. The thick and crispy breading, the white flaky fish, and the white bread and toppings to soak it all up, make for the perfect sandwich. You can guarantee your food is piping hot each time. This place is truly cooked to order. Please keep in mind that they're CASH only. This is an inconvenience, but luckily they're close to the bank if you forget. read more

Marko's Fish House - Fish sandwich - Seafood Near Me - Madison, Illinois

The very best and tastiest fish sandwich that I've had in the Midwest. The delicious bread is locally sourced in St Louis and the tender cod filets are sourced from Iceland, while being freshly breaded and fried in-house. The sandwich includes pickles, onions, and banana peppers that flavorfully complement each other to make this a truly delectable treat. I also ordered the potato salad and coleslaw (both delicious); and put some of that coleslaw plus a slice of cheese (for a small upcharge) on the sandwich (all were yummy). Don't let the external appearance of this place stop you -- MUST TRY! read more

The fish was cod so flaky seasoned just right, usually I would want my fish season to the T but with the homemade bread , banana peppers , onion amd pickles man it's really to die for. read more

I have been coming here for almost 40 years... Still serving the best fish sandwich in St Louis region (or anywhere)! This is a deep fried cod sandwich, as good as it gets! Hands down!!! This 95 year old icon is a treasure! I have talked to truck drivers who drive 50+ miles off their route to this little whole in the wall "fish stand" for the cod sandwich.... But you do not order a "cod sandwich" here- You order by saying "1 fish" or "2 fish" with (add your side(s) here). 5 Star plus! read more

A very simple menu and small seating area. But they are great at what they deliver. The fish sandwich is outstanding! One of the best that I ever had :). Someone recently posted that the thought the prices were too high. The fish sandwich was $8.75, which I thought was very reasonable for the quality and quantity...things go up, it is what it is. I have been wanting to come here for years and I finally made it, I will be back soon. read more

I finally found my way back here. I stumbled on Marko's about 14 years ago but didn't note the name or exact location. Thanks s tiny 90 plus year old family business is a real gem if your a fan of bartered fried fish. The micro menu offers one of the best Fish Sandwiches I've ever had. It's served on bakery white bread with sliced onion, banana peppers and pickles. Tartar and hot sauce are available. I ordered a fish sandwich and fries. Currently only carry out is available. This hearty meal was less than $10. Service was fast in spite of the Lenten lunch rush. It's well worth the drive off the beaten path to find this delightful piece of culinary history. read more

I have been eating here for 32 years. I no longer live in the area, but every time I come back I have to stop by Marko's and get the best fish sandwich I have ever had. I have been many places in the US and the world and have not found a fish sandwich that is nearly this good. If you are visiting STL come by here, I promise it is worth it. read more

This meets the definition of hole in the wall dating. They have a old TV playing the local news during lunchtime. One person making the food and running the register at the same time. The food I had was fresh and excellent. Cash only. read more

Amazing fish sandwich. Consistent quality. They close early. I think they close at 2pm. Marco's is closed on weekends.

My coworker brings in these fish sandwiches, and they a HIT!!! The bread is white and fluffy, and Oh so fresh. I love the perfect bite with the onions, pickles and tons of tartar sauce. Family owned, 4th generation. Support local! read more

I would really hate to be that guy. You know, the one who gives the first 'lower than 4-star review' for a well-respected restaurant. But honesty has always been my thing on Yelp. I tried eating here one night and I didn't have cash on me at the time. It didn't sit well with me when I was told, 'Cash only, sorry!'. So I came back because I was wondering about all the hype behind the well-liked fish sandwich at Marko's. The cod fish sandwich was alright. It wasn't bad, nor was it that great. In fact, I've had better fish at American Legion-type places on Friday nights. The fries were fine, too. What I found the most odd was the food was very fast, as if they just pre-made it. Surely, they wouldn't have known what I was going to order before I walked in the door. From the time I walked in and sat at my table and got my full plate, it was probably 4 minutes. The only different thing about the sandwich was it was on big white bread, with onions and banana peppers (I thought it was a nice combination). I also liked that there was hot sauce on the table, in a plastic container. But overall, I just wasn't won over. Especially for the price I paid, with just cash. Look, I know Marko's has a long, respectable history, especially for the dying and depressed community of Madison. There's the press articles on the wall to prove it. But, I just didn't see the fish as different than anyone else's, that's all. read more

Marko's Fish House - Basic cod and fries - Seafood Near Me - Madison, Illinois

Marko's Fish is located on Madison Avenue in Madison, Illinois. It is run by a family who came to the area from Croatia many years ago. Their cod sandwiches are outstanding. The bread is always fresh and the peppers and onions perfectly compliment the fish. They offer a few side items and their fries are very good. They have a small dinning area with three or four tables and a few stools at the counter. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like cod sandwiches. They can get very busy during Lent. read more

Best fish sandwich in the St. Louis metro area, hands down. Served on fresh baked bread, it's amazing.. And Tabitha is the person who makes it all worth while, she's the person who makes and serves the food. Super nice person, can cause on a conversation with anyone that walks through the door. read more

The big golden beer battered cod fish is pretty good. The only thing I can really compare it to is Culvers Cod fish sandwhich, in this case Marko's is better all day long. If you stop by, you are gonna get a big cut of cod fish that is beer battered and golden deep fried. Now if you are afraid of oil, this fish comes with a little bit of oil on it. As a matter of fact the only way you can get this fish is deep fried and beer battered. I have tried the onion rings and the fries they are all frozen there is no kitchen prep in this place. However, for frozen they are pretty tasty, I guess it is that fish oil. They offer shrimp, which I understand may not be their strong dish, as I like my shrimp big if fried and these are not that big at all, I was told they are popcorn shrimp, as the cook told me. They offer hamburger and cheeseburgers, however, the cook said it is best to stick with the cod fish. So now you know when you come, order only the cod fish sandwich, now you have a choice of how you want it. You can get your cod fish sandwich plain on good white bread, or with your selection of pickles, onions and or banana peppers on white bread. Your condiments of choice are premade tarter sauce or hot sauce packets. A cold soda in a can costs you $1.00 Now this place can easily be passed up if you are not looking for it, as it does not look like a restaurant. It is a small little place but with a lot of parking and it is off the street parking. The place at best can seat 12 people, 4 at the counter and 8 at the tables and you better know each other. I think if you are in the area or passing through do try this place you may well enjoy it. If you are not in the area don't make a special trip unless you just want to try a different cod fish sandwich that is simple and good. This is great for me, I like mines with the pickles, onions and banana peppers the tarter sauce is my condiment of choice. I do wish they would make their own tarter sauce and make it better than the squirt bottle stuff. But if it ain't broke why fix it. Have to give them the rating I have not seen anyone else do cod fish better. read more

If you're looking for the BEST FISH in the metro east, drive over to Marko's fish in Madison, Illinois. They've been making the deep fried cod sandwiches forever--on the freshest, creamiest bread I've ever eaten. Yum! Pickles, yellow peppers, and sliced onions top it all off! I grew up going there frequently, but moved away long ago. When we returned to STL, we started driving over occasionally because there's nothing like a hot Marko's Fish Sandwich. Took my 88 year old mom there this afternoon and got our sandwiches to go. Amazing how they continue to make the same sandwich we all remember and love. This has been an institution in Madison since 1930. And you've never had a fish Sandwhich until you've had a Marko's Fish Sandwich. The peppers are homemade and delicious. The family still continues the traditon of all the dishes they have been making for over 60 years. This is on of those hometown places you just wish were closer. Or if you accidently meet someone from this area, this place would definately be on their list. Branko is wonderful and is more than happy to tell you stories from the olden days which is a gift in itself. Marko's is NAILS!.. Plain and simple. Consistency with restaurants, (fast or otherwise), in this town is something that is sorely lacking and Marko's nails it every time. You know exactly what you're going to get when you walk in, and that alone is worth at least 3 stars. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the best fish sandwiches in the area. Marko's is one of the very few, true locally owned and run business left around here. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy a 70+ year old staple of the community. read more

Everything when you look at this place says it's wrong. They literally built a diner in the front room of a house. They keep their fish in a deep freeze that's in plain view of the customers. You can watch across the counter as they prepare your order. And this is one of the best darn fish sandwiches out there! I rave about this place, especially during Lent when fish fries are the cool place to be. I will warn everyone not to judge this place by appearances. If you like a battered, fried fish sandwich, I don't think you'll find a better one in the area. Outstanding! read more
