They have a lot of cream cheese flavors to choose from depending on your mood. They also have a very complete collection of pastries. I have avoided these so far because of my fitness goals, and I know that if I start with eating just one, I will get hooked and eat a dozen. When I went up to the counter to order the bagels as they fell off the belt - I confirmed that the deal was still on. With little to no enthusiasm the person behind the counter said "YES - what do you want". Que the anxiety. During the whole interaction I felt rushed and uncomfortable... at a bagel shop! I got my 12 bagels then went to another counter to pay. I thought I'd pick up a pack of fresh cream cheese. The menu said a container was a little under $6. Now the woman behind the counter was short and snippy. I asked if I could do half of one flavour and half of another. She told me I had to hurry and decide so I did, unsure of my choices. Feeling defeated at this point I went to pay and the small container of cream cheese rang up at over $8?? I couldn't even ask questions as they kept telling me to hurry. Mind you I've been in the store for maybe 10 minutes - and 8 minutes of that was standing in line. I said no thank you, I wouldn't take the cream cheese because why? Why was it that expensive? And now two workers literally started yelling at me! That I ordered it and I have to take it. It never passed the counter/barrier and it wasn't handed to me. So it wasn't contaminated. The ladies working behind the counter were fast and friendly.What caught my attention the most was their pricing the lox bagel was 6.99 which I thought was a great price, NU bagel charges close to $12 for the same bagel. I felt discriminated against and harassed at the North York location - 40 SHEPPARD AVENUE EAST. To whom it may concern: I am a loyal customer of your North York store/ cafe at 40 Sheppard Ave East. I live in the neighbourhood and have been a member of the community for a long time. At this store/ cafe I really enjoy the avocado BLT and the coffee with almond croissants. Not only do I visit the place in person, but I also order lots via online delivery. I truly enjoy the atmosphere of the place and usually, the quality of food is good. However, I have to admit that today I was fed up with the harassment of one particular employee at this location. She might be in her 20-30s and has black hair (possibly curly) and fair skin. I don't know her name, but she always gave me anxiety and demonstrated really mean behaviour towards me. So, now I realized that she actually might have discriminated against me (I am Asian, born outside of Canada) and harassed me - let me feel like I am an idiot. 1) Whenever she is working at the counter she always looks very confused when I make orders. I order nothing complex: an avocado BLT with cream cheese added to it. In response, she seems always tired and fed up with people in general. Isn't she supposed to serve customers with respect and be polite? I am not asking to smile all the time, I am simply asking to not make your customer feel like they are idiots. 2) She would always sigh and look at me like l am sooooooo confusing to her. She is making me feel very bad on numerous occasions when I visit the store and she is there. 3) I speak English quite well and other employees always understand me. So it may be something to do with my race, my look or whatever her personal reasons might be. 4) So this kind of attitude made me very anxious all the time. Whenever I enter the store I would always look at the counter - who exactly is there? And whenever I see her, my heart drops and I feel distraught. 5) The most upsetting is that I really like the place and all the other employees there are usually very friendly. I never had any issues with other employees there! The manager/ supervisor is nice and she always jumps in with help. 6) It is that one person who is so unhappy with her life I am assuming, that tries to make everybody else feel miserable. I feel sorry for her, but I will not tolerate this kind of behaviour towards me. I am polite and always say thank you, so why can't she make a little effort? Today again I felt discriminated against and harassed... Left the store with a very bad "taste in my mouth" :( I think if What a Bagel really cares about its customers, they should consider either some additional training on the anti-discrimination and anti-harassment topics or really talk to this one employee, who makes people feel really upset after visiting the store. read more

Came here to try their awesome lox & cream cheese on a bagel. It is soooooooo good!!! As soon as you come into the store, the aroma of bagels hits you in the face and boy does it smell fresh! The lox & cream cheese on a bagel tasted absolutely deliciously fresh and the cream cheese is wonderful. The smoke salmon is really yummy. The wait time about 10 minutes and this place can get quite busy during lunch hour. Brought home my order and my wife is dying to try! The price is reasonable and good portions. I'm never coming back here again. The HEALTH DEPARTMENT has been called on them and will be checking up on them. Hopefully they shut this DISEASE INFESTATION down. And I actually used to love coming here. NOT ANYMORE!!! Here's what happened: There was a lady getting bagels and she was pretty sick (coughing in her hands and in her jacket). Instead of using the tongs to pick up the bagels, she used her hands. The staff was notified about this and the lady was told to use the tongs instead of her hands. The idiot lady angrily emptied her bag of bagels she had picked up with her DIRTY/COUGHED on hands and back into the bagel trays. She then stormed out. The staff saw this and did not do any damage control on the bagels that she had contaminated. All the staff who did not see this were notified about what she had done to contaminate all of their bagels. The staff's reply was that they could not force anyone to use the tongs. Ok. Understandable. But when asked what they were going to do about the bagels that she had contaminated and thrown back into the new pile of bagels????? Well.... Their reply was "We cannot force anyone to use tongs". SERIOUSLY!!!! There was no attempt to control the spread of the women's dirty bagels and they did not even attempt to remove even the ones that she had left in their. They should have completely removed the entire bin of bagels that she had contaminated but they did not because they wanted to sell them and get other people sick. They knew that once all the people in the store had left, other unaware people would come in and buy the bagels that this women had touched with her BARE HANDS which she had COUGHED on and THROWN BACK INTO THE BAGEL BINS. This is a disgrace and absolutely disgusting. The staff here have absolutely no common sense and no idea how to run a clean/safe store. They were told that the health department would be called on them. Most of the customers who had seen this whole event dropped all of their items and walked out. I'm sure the new unaware buyers picked up the CONTAMINATED bagel and got sick off of it. To anyone who got sick from after eating a bagel here, this is probably the reason why you got sick. The HEALTH DEPARTMENT was called and when told of what happened, their immediate response was "THAT IS DISGUSTING!!!! We will definitely be doing a check on them now" I hope they shut down this dump. Several months ago I had a hankering for bagels. I decided to give What a Bagel a try and was pleased with their prices (exactly $6 for a dozen bagels) and the taste. They were really, very good! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a variety of flavours to choose from. But I had this nagging feeling, because it wasn't a "traditional Jewish bagel shop". I swore I wouldn't give a full judgement until I had sampled bagels from Bagel World. Bagel World, which has a few locations in the city, boosts the best bagels IN the city. They also have weird hours though, making it hard to get to on a weeknight. I finally made it there and grabbed four bagels. You can choose as many bagels as you want and you can pick the bagel you want and add loads of options. I opted for the everything bagel with silky delicious cream cheese with cucumber. I only order the dill cream cheese. I typically hate 'dill' flavour, but it is quite delicious and not too 'fully'. The bagel: Freshly toasted and delicious. The bagels at what a bagel are the best in Toronto. The reason for this is because of the dough. The dough is always fresh and perfectly constructed. It has a great outer layer that is crispy and a perfectly cooked interior. The cream cheese: While I know what a bagel bakes their wares onsite - I'm not sure whether the cream cheese is made on premises. I order the dill cream cheese. The staff are friendly and quick, a must for such a popular place. They have a fantastic salad bar where you can mix and match whatever you like with a healthy choice of toppings. The bagels are amazing and you can get them topped with whatever you like, whether it be a fancy cream cheese, or peanut butter and jam, or egg salad. There are tons of pastries and sweets as well, which is amazing given my sweet tooth. I have to fight hard not to buy a double chocolate croissant each time I'm there. There are a few small round tables and chairs outside that makes a decent patio to soak up some sun during your lunch break. They also serve a good variety of sweet and savory pastries in addition to their bagels, including rugelach, hamentashen, and even bourekahs. While the variety, freshness, and tasty bagels are definitely a plus, the prices aren't necessarily right across the board, and in fact very annoyingly, there are no prices listed on any of the baked goods, meaning you'll have to take a chance or inquire about any item you are interested in. This place has been here forever (perhaps I exaggerate), why have I never walked in?! Because the second you walk in, you will smell the greatness that is freshly baked bagels. And while I have a tendency to stick to those oh-so-delicious Montreal bagels, this place has to be an exception. You can literally SEE the bagels rolling out of the ovens and straight into the baskets you get them from. Although I was hoping for a BLT, this wasn't an option, so I got the tuna salad with cucumbers instead. Every time I go there the staff are rude and unpleasant. Today I walk up to the counter with bags of bagels and the clerk says to me "What?". And she gives me this look like my being a customer there is an inconvenience for her. After ringing in the sale she asks "You want the receipt?" and I politely replied "Yes please" and she rolls her eyes like it is a hassle to give me the receipt.
