I bought the the flatbread which wasn't worth the $9 I paid for a bag. They were so hard impossible to break and even harder to chew. I had to throw them out for fear of breaking a tooth or filling. I would have tried return them to get my money back but because it was Friday the store closed at 4pm. I do however, highly recommend the bagels and challah. read more

First trip to Gryfe's this morning. Was not disappointed. Bagels are soft and delicious. Would definitely go back again!

Interesting spot - I had driven by at night and almost thought it was an abandoned storefront but noticed a few signs that looked new. I decided to try their famous bagels and was not disappointed. It was chewy but not too dense and had this lightness even though it was substantial. Definitely impressed. I don't quite get why they don't offer it with cream cheese or other basic spreads - if you want cream cheese, you have to buy a container of it which is $8 and no doubt very good quality. But seems inconvenient. I'm sure they have their reasons and the bagels are worth it anyways. I also tried their cheese danishes and apple turnovers which seemed popular but didn't really get it - nothing stood out for me. And finally I got their challah bread which they only make Thursday and Friday afternoons. I think I was expecting something amazing instead it was "just" very good :) Definitely recommended for the bagels - worth a trip out. read more

An awesome bagel when just bought; and if anything, unique to Toronto. Not Montreal style so it should not be on this list. Bought fresh these bagels are beyond compare, never had one I liked better. But yesterday's bagels are ho-hum, while a good Montreal style bagel is almost as good on day two as day one. So no real comparison. It's a matter of personal taste whether you like Gryfes; you do or you don't, and there is no one else I know of makes a Gryfe's 'style' bagel. read more

Amazing bagels and super nice staff! We were in the neighbourhood and the hubby felt like eating a bagel with smoked salmon so we Yelp and decided to visit this 100 year old family business. We made the mistake of not reading any of the reviews because 1) they only accept cash 2) they only sell baked goods on the weekends, so no sandwiches, not even cream cheese on your bagel. So we just bought a dozen of bagels and Philly cream cheese on the side. We had a crying toddler and were desperately trying to find enough cash to pay for our order, the cashier was nice enough to give my toddler a free plain bagel to calm her down. Bribery and food was the perfect formula, she stopped crying almost immediately. The bagel doesn't cost a lot but the gesture was so thoughtful and we really appreciate it. As for the bagel, omg, it was super fresh, soft and airy. Hands down the best bagel I've had in Toronto. I ate 2 bagels in the car on our way home. Couldn't even wait until we got home. I hope I don't get too much Gryfe for this review. I've had good bagels in Cleveland and Ottawa, and amazing ones in New York City (my gosh, the ones from Brooklyn Bagel and Ess-A-Bagel and Murray's and Baker's Dozen are literally orgasmic), so I had very high hopes. I found these bagels to taste bland, cheap, and boring. Overrated, in my opinion, was never a better fit for a place. But perhaps they are the best in Toronto? I would hope not... I don't have much to compare them to here. Lots of great food though, Portuguese Bakeries, Chinese Dumplings, Greek Desserts, and so on. But this one did not do it for me. 3 stars because it's family owned and I fully support that. And they weren't awful by any means. Poor staff, ignorant atmosphere and bug central. My boyfriend and I made a trek out here for what we thought were some of toronto's best bagels. The staff treated us like we were idiots when we asked if they had cinnamon raisin bagels. Rather than politely tell us that they didn't make any, they scolded us like we were somehow supposed to know the menu. The icing on top of this shit sundae, were the cockroaches all over the walls. Cockroaches! City of Toronto needs to pay this location a visit. So disgusting. We immediately left. read more

Dope place awesome bagels. 70cents each so you can't go wrong. On weekends they don't make sandwiches (i.e. bagels with form of topping - butter, cream cheese, etc). It's strictly the baked goods only. However the lady was so nice. She made me and my wife bagels with cream cheese. Lovely place. Small homely and very local. Delicious bagels. I have to admit I don't frequent this area often - and driving around Bathurst looking for Gayle's it certainly didn't look an area that would be home to city-renowned bagels. Older commercial building which have seen better days line the streets. Looking left you see some closed up shops, looking right much of the same. Or maybe I was just in a mind-altered-movie-state during TIFF weekend. Any ways, even on a Friday afternoon Gryfe's had a few customers in line, each ordering a dozen of whichever types of bagels they had on hand. When they're fully stocked, there's about a dozen varieties, although they're all fairly traditional choices: sesame, poppy seed, extra poppy seed, flax, everything, cinnamon raisin, plain, etc. Soft, fluffy and airy, these bagels are pretty good if you're into that kinda thing. They're $0.60 each or $7.20 a dozen. That being said, I personally enjoy bagels with a it more chew and texture to them (like Montreal style bagels), but regardless, the carb-monster inside of me made yet another appearance when I picked these up, as I quickly devoured two bagels and an apple turnover. I can certainly see why folks like the bagels, IF they like the soft and fluffy variety. They also toast up pretty well, which adds some good texture to it and is much more down my alley. The apple turnover ($1.15) was good, though the apple filling could have used more cinnamon. They ran out of their $1 pizzas by Friday afternoon, since they're closed on Saturday and don't want to bake more in case they don't sell out that night. Great to know that everything here is fresh! If you do come here, I'd suggest you do not come on a Friday afternoon, as a lot of their bagel varieties and pizzas are sold out. I'm giving it 3 stars mainly because I'm simply not a fan of the softer, fluffier type of bagel, but they're good, all-in-all. Great friendly service, definitely a neighbourhood joint . read more

The absolute best bagels I have ever had in Toronto. My family has been going here since before I was born - and the store's traditions date back to the early 1900s. Even though we moved away from the area about 14 years ago, once in a while, we still make the trek to grab some bagels, pastries, and mini pizzas from Gryfe's. There is nothing like a Gryfe's bagel - especially when you eat them fresh in the early morning. While they ship them to some Toronto grocers such as Pusateri's, Bruno's, and the Kitchen Table, they're still the best eaten right out of Gryfe's bagel shop on Bathurst. Gryfe's has a long history in this neighbourhood and, through the years, their quality has stayed the same. It's a classic Toronto stop for many - from police officers to old-time fans and it's even been mentioned in fictional books where the story takes place in Toronto. They're the perfect bagels and with the combination of chewy, light, fluffy, and soft, and classic options such as poppy seed, flax seed, sesame, and multigrain (to name a few), you can't go wrong with one - or a dozen ($7.20/dozen). Eat them plain or eat them with something else - but I can guarantee that you'll be coming back for more. read more

Was told to pick up 8 dozen bagels from Gryfe's for a Goodbye Party at work. From the exterior, it looks outdated and a little depressing; however, as soon as I entered the store, I was quickly greeted by the friendly staff. You can see the staff in the back preparing the various bagels. I was second in line at 7:00 AM and within a few minutes, the line extended to the entrance. People really like their bagels! When it was time to pay, I understood why so many people were here... for 8 dozen bagels and 8 tubs of cream cheese, I paid $80. Back at the ranch, I had the sessame bagel with cream cheese ... if it just wasn't so rich with calories! Anyway, it was my Friday treat so guilt bye-bye. Yay, I'm a fan. As a bagel fan, I had to check this place out after seeing it on the Best Bagels lists. The store itself was small and simple and dark. They didn't open any lights and just allowed the natural light from the window to come in. If it weren't for the Best Bagels list, i might have never come into this shop even though I am a Bagel fanatic. In today's day and age, packaging, interior decor, display means everything right? Well, not if you are on every single Bagel List and you've been around long enough to prove that you are the real deal. The verdict on the bagels: they are so fresh and tasty. I bought two dozen and finished two or three on the drive back home. Since they are on the "smaller" side, I wouldn't say I had three bagels at once.. it was more like one and a half? (so I tell myself that) and since it was so fresh and warm, it was really hard to resist. Especially because of all that traffic that hindered me from getting home fast enough so I could have some distance between me and this seducing bag of carbs. Although I think they are overpriced at $7.50 for 6 small pizzas, I bought them weekly. However, I was in the store today and noticed that prices are increasing as of Dec. 1 to $9.00 per package. Sorry Gryfe but you have lost a customer. The pizzas were $6.00 a package not too long ago. Oh, and your 'cash only' policy sucks. Tax avoidance anyone? read more

This bakery is fabulous! We got a dozen bagels in a variety of flavours, and a couple of pastries / danishes - one was cheese, the other blueberry. The bagels were delicious just like that with nothing on them! And the pastries were wonderful. I would definitely go back! read more

Gryfe's may well make the best bagels in Toronto.These are completely unlikely the chewy/sweet Montreal bagel and the brick-style New York bagel. They're very small, very soft, and have a nice crispy crust on the outside, more like rolls than bagels. But they're delicious, especially if you can get them right out of the oven. Get sesame. The kids go crazy for their pizza bagels too. I'm a Montreal bagel partisan but these are highly recommended. read more

I first tried a Gryfe bagel a few weeks ago from Fiesta Farms as per Matthew S's tip and was totally wowed by it. So much so that anytime my errands take me close to the 401 I'll make sure to get off at Bathurst (only westbound 401 though!) and pick up a dozen. Or two. They are great toasted and are still good toasted even 4 days later! I'll let you know how they fare with freezing. The bagels at Gryfe's are $0.55 each or a dozen for $6.40. At Fiesta they were $1.99 for 3. These bagels are so good it makes me question my love for my 10 month old daughter who just recently mastered chewing solid foods. When she implores me to share with her big brown eyes gazing at the bagel on its way to my mouth and reaches with chubby little hands I do eventually give in, but she never gets the last bite So now the entire family has an expensive bagel habit. read more

Since returning from Montreal, I've been on a bagel high. Maybe it's the yeast, I'm not quite sure, but I lived off eating fresh bagels from the St. Viateur and Fairmount bakeries when I spent 24 hours in Montreal recently (please read my reviews of both of them) I was introduced to Gryfe's by my mother a few years ago, who came home after shopping and announced to have found authentic Montreal-style bagels. My exposure to bagels were from chains found in food courts at the mall, bagels the size of my head and so heavy that it felt you swallowed a brick. When she showed me these slim and small bagels, I immediately scrunched up my face and said "These aren't REAL bagels." This was an odd thing to say as I grew up in a Jewish neighbourhood. I'm not Jewish but you would think that I would have been more cultured in this ring-shaped wonder. The Gryfe bagels tasted excellent: fresh and light. I could eat two of them and not feel like I wanted to cradle my stomach afterward, crying for mercy. Having now sampled bagels from Gryfe's and in Montreal, my only dilemma is: are there other great bagel places in Toronto? The Jewish neighbourhood lies in North York and north of Toronto so I would have to travel the distance to get some, but ask you, can they deliver? Can they air lift a package to my house? I am jonesing for these babies and I'm not sure if I can quit cold turkey. Or perhaps this might inspire me to locate other bakeries that claim their authenticity in my search for a great bagel. read more

100 years to get these bagels taste this good. Fresh even until the next day when you pop it in the oven. I was never a fan of bagels until the day my very pushy better half brought me here a decade ago and we never leave here without a dozen. 5am stop overs before a trip to the cottage can secure breakfast for champs with over easy eggs on these carby delights. Oh and a crew of hard working people that work at this joint is the key ingredient to a successful, on time, always fresh brown bag of doughy goods. I generally stick to a low-carb diet, but I'd have to say Gryfe's bagels are my kryptonite. I'm not sure what makes a Gryfe's bagel so magical. Being baked in a wood oven? The sesame seeds? Their funny non-symmetrical shape? Fresh from the oven, they are crispy but oddly light, fluffy, and airy for a bagel. The bakery is always busy but it's worth the wait. I would eat two bagels in the car with nothing on them as if they were potato chips. And yes, I have bought a tub of Western cream cheese in the bakery and I have made my own cream cheese bagel-wiches outside. Even after living in Montreal, there aren't any bagels that can compare to Gryfe's. I prefer to have them from the bakery, but I've picked them up from Daiter's as well. There was actually a Japanese take out place at RBC plaza in the downtown core that sold them. They have mini-pizzas, which are pretty tasty too. Gryfe's is my favourite bagel place in the city. I am not a bagel person. Or at least I wasnt until now. I could never understand NY's obsession with them, when there are perfectly good Pop Tarts and Toaster strudel's or breakfast sandwiches. I was wary when i bit into it, but there was no way he'd let me leave toronto without this right of passage. And just like that I was hooked. It was perfectly crisp on the outside, but so soft and pillowy on the inside- if you are a fan of Kim Kardashian's ass you'll love these- it brought tears of joy to my eyes. This is why Canadian's are so laidback and happy. I will never forsake bagels again. Kellog's deprived me. Let's make one thing clear. While other posters regularly invoke Montreal in their description of Gryfe's bagels, they are emphatically NOT Montreal bagels. A true carbophile knows that Montreal bagels are small and skinny with large central holes; boiled in honeyed water and baked in a roaring wood oven. They have a unique smoky, sweet flavour, a crisp crust, dense and chewy crumb and a tendency to petrify within minutes of purchase. Like any regional foodstuff, they inspire a loyal following and polarizing reactions from outsiders. Gryfe's may be Toronto's answer to Montreal's St. Viateur and Fairmount Bagel Bakery in producing a regional bagel style. Unlike our own Montreal-style joints, or shameless New York derivatives like Kiva's or Bagel World (both of which are perfectly good if you visit their original locations, hot garbage if you go to a spinoff), Gryfe's bagels exist in a world of their own. They are petite by New York bagel standards, which is good if you don't want to start your day with a a carb-bomb (although you can make up for this by eating two, preferably with lots of butter and salt, or cream cheese and lox, or one of each. I won't judge). Their crust is thin and crisp just out of the oven. The biggest difference lies inside. Gryfe's are uniquely light and fluffy-not in a goyishe wonderbread kind of way, but more in a helpful "here, let me hold this schmear without putting you in a diabetic coma" kind of way. They don't harden immediately into hockey pucks, and don't sit like lead in your gullet afterwards. If you're the type of heathen who toasts your bagel, they stand up well to such abuse. I don't know if they're boiled or not (I suspect not), but they are more than a roll with a hole. They are unique to Toronto and perhaps the world. See? We have our own food culture after all! read more

The bagels at Gryfe's are so damn good! It's a unique style of bagel that I've never had outside of Toronto. They're crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and have killer flavour. Totally different then the dense, chewy and salt-free Montreal-style bagels, which I hate by the way. If I can get 'em fresh I'll just eat them straight with no toppings. If they're more than 1/2 a day old, toast them and put on a little butter or cream cheese. Absolutely divine. Lawrence and Bathurst too much of a trek for you? Gryfe's bagels are also sold frozen to various groceries stores throughout the city. These bagels are light, crispy, chewy and crammed full of yum and deliciousness. I did live closer for a while and had them more often. Now it's quite a trek, but every time I go I'm always glad I did. They do offer a small selection of the standard bagel flavours like poppy seed and such, but my favourite is their plain bagel. The only potential bad part about these bagels? If you only buy 6, you will eat them all before you get home. The other local business owners have been quite annoyed by this place... Once I even saw a "NO BAGEL PARKING" sign on a parking lot for a nearby bank. The lineup on weekends is something to avoid as it often extends halfway down the block. read more

Best bagels ever. Period. Hands down. They don't come any better than this. Other than maybe Montreal bagels, these things are the most delicious carbtacular rings of dough you will have taste. The place is pretty bare bones. They sell bagels (several different kinds, I LOVE the poppyseed), sandwhiches (not on the weekends) and drinks and bagel bites (which I haven't had but look tasty). The bagels themselves are like $3 for six, and considering their freshly made on site, you can't really go wrong. For those who love carbs as much as I do, this place is a definite must! read more
