Lots of lanes. Very old and not well kept. They did not have shoes for everyone. The shoes that they had were in poor condition. I am going to try some other places in Austin that have bowling; I know there aren't many. This may be the best Austin has to offer. read more

GREAT place for a kids' birthday party. My daughter asked for a suprise party this year and since we live so close, we decided to do it at Westgate Lanes. Super-easy! Called up, got the first slot of the Saturday parties. They provide EVERYTHING except the cake. I brought ballons for some extra decor, but they weren't necessary. I had an ice cream cake and our hostess (sorry, I can't remember her name) put it in the freezer for me. Kids bowled for one hour and the hostess put all the kids names into the system before we started (I provided the list). We did buy some fries and tater tots to snack on during bowling, but that was cool. We got everyone the drinks during bowling and they were well satisfied. We ordered two extra pizzas but the pizzas that came with the party were so big they would have been almost enough to cover us. We had 10 kids and 7 adults. We did overlap with the next party (they used the other half of the room) but it was for maybe 10 minutes while we came in from bowling and they were just setting up getting ready to bowl. I would highly recommend having a kid birthday party here. I may even have a birthday party for myself here one year! Thanks to the hostess--she was great! read more

Bowling alley itself is good- exactly what you would expect. Good snacks, cheap beer, bowling. It can get really busy but it's worth the wait especially for $10/ person all you can bowl on special event nights. My biggest beef with this place is the bar/ bar service. There has never been more than one (unfriendly) bartender - and lines can get up to 10 people long all night (you'll miss multiple frames waiting). I'll still continue to come, but I would honestly pay more money to get decent bar wait times. It would make waiting for a lane and playing more enjoyable. read more

We had a really good time bowling we went and use our coupons that the Children get when they're out of school and they get to ball one free game every day and all we had to pay for was the shoes so that was three of us bowling and we paid nine dollars as far as the bowling goes we had some support for my daughter to roll the ball they have the special rollers and they also have accommodations for younger children there. What do you do for recreation? Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback. I'm in a bowling league through Austin Sports & Social Club (ASSC). The staff is very courteous and they are also very organized. Any issues with the lanes and they are on top of it asap. The lovely lady that runs it is very thorough and makes sure you get to the appropriate lane and you have all your team members present. The lanes are not too oily either. ASSC (www.austinssc.com) has a 5 week league for $65. It includes shoe rental and team shirt. You play 2 teams a night. Game times are consistent every Thursday at 8:30 and 9:30. It will be the best time of your life. The bartenders are very nice and quick on getting your drinks and back to your lane. The food counter is very kind as well and I would like to say their food is not too bad. I mean, you can't really go wrong with fried food. I do not mind grabbing something from there when needed. They also have a variety of balls and I have yet found myself not able to find the right size. With or without a league, I would continue to come to Westgate Lanes anytime. read more

Yes you can go to slightly more expensive alley's and pay a little more,but for what? Westgate Lanes holds true to any alley built within the last three to four decades. Uncaring cashier/shoe spray dudes,random weighted balls,non- returning ball returns,food that goes right through you or is to cold to eat, and of course bowling pin beer bottles. Let me start off by saying that I'm no bowler. I mean, I loved The Big Lebowski and Kingpin, but I seriously know nothing about the "sport". I like the shoes and I like any sport where it is acceptable to drink beer while you play. But me, I'm no bowler. One of the first things I learned about my boyfriend when we first met was that he grew up down the street from a bowling alley and has bowled a 300 game. A good game for me is when I score over 100, so needless to say, I wasn't pushing for a bowling date. Yet, after many months of dating, we found ourselves at Westgate Lanes one Sunday afternoon. We called before heading to the bowling alley, just to make sure they had some available lanes so we weren't stuck waiting around. The woman on the phone said they had several available lanes and that there shouldn't be a wait. Unfortunately, this did not turn out to be true, and we ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a lane (although we noticed several empty lanes. Annoying.). We were looking for some old school arcade games to kill the time. This place looks straight out of the early '80's, so we figured we'd be able to play a few games of Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga or Donkey Kong while we waited, but alas, no video games. This alone knocked one star off this review. After waiting around, we got a lane, and picked out our balls, and started bowling. Oh, a word about the shoes! They were pretty snazzy, relatively new, not stinky at all like most bowling shoes tend to be, and you don't have to leave your shoes as collateral! Nice touch. We played a couple of games in which I was completely killed, but I did score over 100 both times, so all in all I was happy. The place was pretty crowded on a Sunday afternoon and the folks next to us knew nothing about bowling etiquette (Jeez, even I know that you don't bowl a the same time as the person in the next lane.), but overall we had a pretty enjoyable time at Westgate Lanes. It was relatively inexpensive as well. I moved north of the river a few months ago, so this place is a bit out of the way for me. Chances are I will find a bowling alley a little closer to my house for the next bowl-a-rama....unless they get Ms. Pac-Man. Then, I'm all over this joint. read more

Westgate lanes has the slickest lanes in town. When I bowl here, my ball glides down the lane and, like a novice ballerina, does a slight pirouette right before it knocks a pin or slips into the gutter. The people who work here are always friendly and set us up with a lane pretty quickly. If we ever have any problems, they are nice about it. They are also very nice to those patrons not accustom to the archaic computer system for setting up the games. Though, the computer graphics are state of the art: my favorite is when I receive a "Beer Frame" which features a mug of beer sliding into the pins and there is a Ka-Blam. Oh, and I never mind when I fail to pick up a spare because all the graphics for leaving it open are just hilarious. The best feature of Westgate Lanes is the other patrons. Everyone is nice and friendly and most of the time the parents are good about supervising their kids. Most importantly, these parents are instilling them with the basic bowling neighbor courtesies that every bowler should know, such as waiting until your neighbor is done with his turn before stepping up to the line. With that said, most of my bowling neighbors at Westgate are tolerant of my one rule of etiquette I just can't follow: don't touch your neighbor's ball. I tend to fondle other people's balls. Sorry. I like to spin them and move them from side to side and see how big they are while I wait for the pins to clear and whatnot. I don't know why. I am not a fidgety person, but it is just something I do when I am bowling. No one seems to mind though. Another reason why I like Westgate is that my bowling neighbors are so supportive. Occasionally, I receive belittling remarks like, "I wouldn't expect a girl who wears her own bowling shoes to be such a lousy bowler." However, the only person who says this is my friend's boyfriend after three or four bowling pin shaped beers. For the most part, this is what usually happens. First frame, I knock down three. Neighbor gives a low whistle and I know it is for my lack of skill not for my sweet can. Next frame, I pick up a spare and receive comments like, "That is it!" or "Whoa, girl. Look at that!" Third frame, I deliver a strike. The family next to me hoots and hollers. Fourth to last frame, gutter balls or a pin wobbles down every now and again. Even when I am losing, I am feeling pretty happy. One change I would request. The music went from "Bust a Move" to three hip hop song from 2008 in a row to Steve Perry and so on. At least choose a decade and stick with it for an hour. It was really hard to find a groove. read more

It's like someone made a copy of Highland Lanes then stamped it down in South Austin. Everything from the bar, down to the bathrooms are in the same location as Highland. It made me feel right at home instantly. I got to Missy's bowling event a little bit early so I decided to try out a bit of the food and grab a beer. I got a patty melt and a shiner bock and sat in the bar area. The burger was more like a grilled cheese with a little bit of hamburger in the middle. It wasn't bad for bowling alley food, but it certianly wasn't gormet. Apparently they are more known for their bbq at Westgate, but they were out of brisket! What a shame! As for the actual lanes... they seem to be pretty well maintained. I am not sure if it's the wood type or the oil pattern they use, but my ball had a litle extra hook to it that made it difficult for me to hit my mark consistiently. Overall my games were solid though, so no real problem there. Overall I had a good time at Westgate. I met some cool people and I learned a valuable lesson: Do not invite Errol to a bowing challenge. A good, fun, old fashioned, bowling alley!! After a couple days of trying to get a lane somewhere for a reasonable price, we happened upon this place after eating dinner nearby. We were able to walk in and for $20 my boyfriend and I had a lane for the night! With beers were priced at $3.50, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect, spur of the moment, date night !! This is the first time I have been to a real bowling alley in quite some time. I live in DC and the closest lanes to us are a Lucky Strike. I grew up in the alley with my brother and sister as our parents played in their league and it is always nice to walk into a nice place like this one. Felt like I was home again. Every single house ball seemed brand new. No chips or scars on any of the balls and the lanes were immaculate. Walked away with a 179. I'll take it. We ordered a large pizza from the cafe and it was out in 10 minutes and was actually rather tasty. The service was friendly and the prices (for the food and bowling) were extremely reasonable. Can you really tell the difference between one bowling alley and another? I can't. I give bowling in general four stars. As long as I go every six months to a year. Any more than that and I give it three stars. On second thought, the shoes you get to wear are cool, so maybe I'd give it three and a half stars. I bowled a 300 at Westgate Lanes, which is only slightly below my average of 278. Well, that might be a bit misleading. I bowled a 300 series. 278 would be about my average for three games total. I must tell you that in a younger, hazier time I was in a bowling league (Honest!). I only bring this up because I'm still proud of our team's name, which was the Bowling Stones. Every time we needed a strike we'd get in a huddle and sing the part to 19th Nervous Breakdown that goes, "Here it comes....here it comes...." Oh, the other teams just loved us. Maybe my scores would be higher if I didn't have such Sticky Fingers. Oh well, a sleepy bowling alley ain't no place for a Street Fightin' Man, anyway. read more

I really wanted to have a great time. I forgot about the deals I had heard via Yelp, and a friend had some friends out bowling here tonight (Monday).... so we left our bar stools downtown and picked up a few friends and headed to Westgate at 10PM... Yes, we were aware they closed at 12.. but we figured a discount? Hell... if we paid per game it was still cheaper than the $8 for the last hour and a half.... The guy at the counter said we couldn't pay per the game so we had to pay the $8 per person... Okay... fine. The lanes had problems constantly. It was half full.... MANY empty lanes. I couldnt find a ball to save my soul. They were unmarked to the weights and as I am a small female I thought there would not be a lot, but at least I could find a bit heavier one with decent holes... NOT... the one ball I could find (I bowl with a 9 normally and own my own but didnt have time to pick it up) had finger holes that were all broken, meaning when I went to bowl it would cut my hand. I looked at every ball on the shelf which were plenty and none were my size or were without cracks. We bowled... The lane next to mine fouled more times than I could count.... for some reason, it would pop up on my frame as a foul and not theirs. I complained to Westgate, and they wold edit the frame but it happened at least 5 times...... once after I had a strike... and I didn't get my points for it.... I know bowling is for fun, but hell.... when I look like I bowled a 79 and I had 4 strikes that came up as fouls..... I wouldnt have minded, but hell..... I paid $8 and couldnt bowl a complete game. Period. I'm disappointed, and I dont know what to say about the lanes. If it was a once in a blue moon thing than tonight was NOT my luck, but I think even on cheaper nights, we all deserve a fair shot to play. Spend some money in fixing the computer/lane errors and update your balls..... read more

This is just like a regular ol' bowling alley, but I found a few things here that made me a notch happier than usual! First, you are able to pay by the game, which was really nice with 6 people. You never know how long you are going to take with that many, and it ended up being a better deal. The other was that they had both NFL games on on all the TVs! Thank you Westgate for letting me celebrate a birthday while not missing the Bronco's game, I won't forget it :) I was also able to easily find a ball with holes for my big fat thumb. I always have a hard time finding one and there were several I could have used. Also, even on a Sunday afternoon, when it was packed, we only waited for less than 10 minutes. Awesome! Went here for a birthday party on a Saturday night. Wasn't crowded, drinks were good, and the local 16 years olds were pretty mature and easy to handle. It was pretty expensive for 2 games / 1 lane. It's cold outside now. I hate the cold. So yelper Erik W and I decide to hit the lanes for some casual bowling. Just our luck, we hit it on gay day. While Erik and I are devastatingly handsome and smartly dressed, we are not, in fact a couple. Sorry boys. I did, however, enjoy the heavy rotation of Melissa Ethridge. It was much cleaner than I expected, though the digital displays are old. No, literally, watch the little cartoon animations, they have a date on them...psssttt, it's 1994. The lanes appeared well kept, and they get bonus points for a mildly funny Big Lebowski menu theme. Despite Erik's assurance that the food was quite good, I didn't feel like tempting the gods with a bowling alley lunch. Bowling with a group would have upped the fun factor and decreased the cost per person, we'll give that a go as winter deepens. read more

Solid old school bowling alley. Cheap beers, diverse crowd, good deals on Sunday and Monday. One night we were having consistent pin resetting and scoring problems, but it was casual bowling and I think if we made more of a fuss about it they would've refunded or more thoroughly addressed it- so I'm not docking them for us being casual. read more

This is just such a fun place. My sister moved close to here so we've walked over a few times. Sometimes we don't even bowl and just hang out at the bar and play darts. Such great prices and super convenient. Only thing is I wish the grill was open later. We've been a couple times where it says it closes at 11 but by 10:15 it's locked up. read more

The place is usually really busy on weekends I would call in advance as they have league nights and times just so you are aware. We played all night till closing one Saturday night and had a blast! The music was really upbeat and the other people bowling around us were really sweet having family night with their little ones and the staff was helpful as well when we arrived letting us know if we needed anything to just ask! Quick getting in and getting out with tons of parking! Location isn't bad and I got some free game tickets for my birthday! Westgate Lanes you are no Dart Bowl but at least you aren't 300 either. This place is just fine for bowling the lanes, and products are well maintained, although I wish they had a broader selection of bowling balls. The things I really liked about the place, were the multiple TVs to catch the game while bowling and the reasonable beer prices for Newcastle. The downside is it was pretty expensive for the girlfriend and I to bowl for 2 hours even with the Go Local card. Its a good alternative to driving to Dart Bowl and its better than the other lanes in Austin but it is one or two minor tweaks from being in the upper echelon. read more

Bowling is like any other place but they are well kept. The employees are helpful and friendly. The lounge is a good place to just kick back and relax if you are not bowling. They always have some sports on the TV and drinks are reasonable in price and size. The snack bar is great and I usually get the burgers.
