While I don't mind a change, it was surprising to find that no Happy Hour drink specials were being offered in the meantime. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and I know the situation isn't in her control. Still, I think it would make sense to keep at least a few drink specials available while the menu transition is happening. Just some feedback for management. read more

The Local was an impressive setting to enjoy brunch. I love the decor and the staff felt like family. There was a nice large bar and all indoor seating and had that old fashioned early 1900s feel. I ordered the Breakfast Sammie. Like the menu said it was cheesy scrambled eggs, candy bacon, chipotle Honey Aioli on a Potato Bun. It was very tasty with great flavor and enjoyed it very much. Hidden gem! I only found out about this through the Offline app and was so glad I came! The interior feels very cozy and though I don't normally hype American food, everything we got was super delicious. And most of the items are under $20. The spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer was perfect. It usually comes with chips but we substituted with pita bread for $1.50 more. Alfredo pasta is not too heavy and we finished it all. We popped in for happy hour, and wow--the prices here are unbeatable! We kicked things off with the herb fries and local dip with chips. The fries were perfectly crispy and addictively good, and the dip was packed with flavor; creaminess from the cheese, sweetness from the pico and a slight kick from the hatch! It paired so well with the crispy tortilla chips. For drinks, we went with the "You're on a Pip" and an Old Fashioned. The "You're on a Pip" is gin-based with orange liqueur--smooth, creamy, and super refreshing, like an orange creamsicle! The Old Fashioned was just right: smooth, a touch sweet, and perfectly balanced. If you love Thai tea, try the Founders Cocktail, it is delicious! It truly took me back to paradise! Met a friend here for lunch. Was seated immediately when we arrived. Friendly customer service and the place itself has a really cool laid-back vibe with relaxing colors. It was not super busy and in fact it was nice to be able to have a conversation with my friend. I ordered the Flying Dutchman and my friend ordered the Chilaquiles. The orders arrived quickly, and while the Chilaquiles did not look like the traditional dish, my friend said it was tasty. The Flying Dutchman is a fried fish sandwich, and the piece of fish itself was larger than I expected but had a good flavor. Overall solid sandwich and nice experience. read more

We stopped in for dinner and w. Ere immediately seated. My husband ordered a whisky drink and I had a French 75 and both were good. My Seared chicken was well browned but not overdone and served atop spinach and tarragon cream sauce-yum! The Flying Dutchman cod sandwich was also crispy and flavorful and served with a side salad. We both missed their fries as they stay crispy until all consumed but felt we needed to make healthier choices. We had plenty of attention from servers. We met up some friends at The Local because it has many great Yelp reviews and I've always wanted to be a local at local restaurant, so I thought this place would be a cute place. When we walked in, the ambiance didn't disappoint. Even though it is located in a strip mall, the interior transformed me back into a old-timey social club. The service also was excellent. We were greeted promptly and on a weekday night, the place was not too packed. Although, when we left, there was a steady stream of patrons filing in. The server gave us recommendations and was knowledgable. He even was able to rattle off the off menu Kids Menu (they do have one even though it's not listed on the menu). The menu however left more to be desired, at least from me. Nothing in the appetizers really sounded like a must try, given they were basically 4 choices in dip all priced over $10 I believe. Pricing for the salads also seemed high because the base all sound like your basic salad; however to add even chicken, it would be $6, $9 for salmon and $10 for steak. By recommendation of Yelp and our friends who had dined here previously, we settled on the fish and chips ($19). I liked how it was served with a small apothecary bottle of malt vinegar because I love my fish and chips with malt vinegar, but taste-wise, I cannot say it was any more memorable than any other fish and chips I've tasted. For me, this is definitely a cute vibe that serves the classics. Unfortunately, the prices are very much modern day prices, which is what made this an "OK" vs "Good" experience. read more

The best part about this place is the staff who are friendly and attentive. However, the food speaks for itself. I'm really surprised that this place has a 4.1 star rating on Yelp. The menu is small, so I expected high quality food. We ordered the steak frites. At a price of $28.50, I expected a perfectly cooked medium rare as we had ordered. The steak came out rare and cold in the middle. It was flavorless, there was no sear, and the meat was terribly under seasoned with just salt. While it does come with a poivre sauce, the sauce doesn't redeem how bland the meat was. The fries that came with all of the dishes were good and crispy. The burger and the fish and chips were average, nothing particularly stand out. I know South Austin has more limited food choices, but there are plenty of other restaurants in Austin with unique, higher quality food that I would choose over The Local. read more

I came across The Local on Yelp a few months ago. I was intrigued by the location since it isn't too far from my parents' house. We decided to stop by for dinner on a Saturday evening. We were greeted immediately by either the manager or owner. I didn't get his name, but he was extremely nice (as was the entire staff). Drinks: I had an espresso martini. It was okay. It came with an orange garnish instead of the espresso beans which was different. The drink was fine, but I wouldn't order it again. Apps: We started with the sweet potato hummus. I love hummus, but I don't care for sweet potatoes. I have to admit that this dish blew me away! The sweet potatoes had a nice flavor and the hummus was very creamy and flavorful! The pita bread was warm and very soft which I enjoyed. We also ordered The Hatch Mac Bites. I didn't try any but it looked good. My stepdad ordered the Cobb salad as an app even though it's an entree. He enjoyed his salad. We ended up getting The Local Dip on the house because of the long wait. It's basically queso and it was delicious. Entree: I had the ATX Classic ordered medium well. The burger was good, but it was cooked to medium. I didn't send it back since it took awhile for us to get our food in the first place. The burger was very juicy and flavorful. My parents had the Grilled Salmon and the Leafy Garden Salad with Salmon and they both enjoyed their meals. Service: Our server Kyle was so nice! He apologized for the long wait. There was also another server (I think her name was Tamara) who was super sweet. Because of the slow service, they ended up comping half our meal which we appreciated. My parents went back the next week and said the food was good but service was a mess again. The staff offered to comp their meal. The service recovery is important, but they're not going to make it if they are constantly comping meals. read more

Came to Brunch this morning - loved the portion of Mimosa and the champagne/ OJ ratio. My boyfriend ordered the Early Cure (earl grey tea, gin, honey, lemon) and it was bomb!! For the food, I ordered the Good Day Breakfast and asked if they could do a side pancake -- which come to find out, they charged me for a Kids pancake ($6) which, had I known they didn't have a side option, I wouldn't have gotten it but all good. My boyfriend got the Biscuit Sandwich and asked for the berry compote which really tied it all together. Overall, the portions here are small but the biscuits were realllllly good. read more

We ate here for dinner tonight and enjoyed it. We were able to get seated immediately and without a reservation, which was nice. My fiancé enjoyed her cosmopolitan drink. We shared the Hatch Mac Bites as an appetizer as well as the Sweet Potato Hummus. The Mac bites were just alright and the Sweet Potato Hummus was solid. For the entrees, the cottage pie was good and I enjoyed my turkey club as well. I just wish I asked for no mustard on it, but aside that it was very good. Tucked in a small shopping center sits The Local with its super cute charm with excellent cocktails, a banging breakfast, and the super nicest and fast service. Even the lighting here is gorgeous here and so subtle from their vintage lighting fixtures. The seating, specifically the booths, are my favorite place to sit and hang out in. This spot reminds me of being at my grandparents house and just feeling welcomed and like I am at home. It just has that charm. After coming in for a couple of breakfasts now I feel confident in highly recommending this spot to bring or meet up with family and/or friends here. They have a large area, in the back, for large groups so I wouldn't worry about worrying if there is enough seating for your hangs. The breakfast selection is small but mighty! Their raspberry preserves for their biscuits are probably my favorite thing about their breakfast menu but that is barely scratching the surface on what they offer here. Their lemon ricotta pancakes look out of this world!!!! I always end up being basic and ordering their Good Day breakfast option that comes with 2 eggs, bacon, biscuit & that raspberry preserve I love, and a small bowl of local fruits. The entire aesthetic of The Local is why I keep coming back. I would probably return but not so much seek it out and recommend it to folks nor bring friends/family visiting. You know when people ask "how's your food over there?" and they say "yeah it's pretty good" but in a way that you know they mean it's just okay. It was a journey to get here, but I loved it! My good friend lives in south Austin, and I live north. I agreed to brave the traffic to try out some venues in her "neck of the woods". "The Local" was not our intended establishment, but what an enjoyable happenstance! We both had a daiquiri- not a frozen one- a classic daiquiri. My goodness, that bartender made us a delicious drink, and it was pretty too! The daiquiris were served in chilled,stemmed glassware which was such a nice touch. I wanted an appetizer to help me recover from my journey (I know, melodramatic), so I tried the macaroni balls. Delicious as well! If you in the area, you must give this place a try. The interior is beautiful, the prices were both high and reasonable, and the service was acceptable (either understaffed or lacking in expediency). Regardless, overall, a very good experience. Stopped here for lunch because we saw it was highly rated and they have fish & chips. I liked the nostalgic decorations which reminded me of a speakeasy. Everyone we interacted with was great and we got our drinks and food quickly while watching Paris Olympics on one of the many screens. My fish & chips were outstanding. They were flaky delicious cod and the fries were super tasty. The table settings were in line with a serious meal which I really like to have. The portions could've been larger but I can't imagine how they could be better tasting. I'd like to go again in the evening and try out their bourbon Old Fashioned too. read more

My friend and I ended up staying for a while and talking and no one ever rushed us out (granted, it was a slower day) but not all places do that. We ordered lots of things! 10/10 recommend the cold brew martini. Really enjoyed the local dip, the scramble, and the chiliquiles. The portion sizes for both meals were big so we each had leftovers. The establishment has a pleasant atmosphere, and the menu looked quite attractive. The choice of dishes was good, although some positions did not quite meet expectations. We ordered spinach dip, which was served almost simultaneously with the main dishes, and unfortunately, it was cool. The chips also seemed a bit stale. My cod sandwich was delicious thanks to a soft bun, although the fish itself is slightly overdrained. Garnish was different: salad liked more than fries, which were a little overcooked. The service is pleasant - drinks were constantly topped up, they offered dessert. In general, the place left a good impression, although there is room for improvement in small things. Reviewing after first visit. New place near my neck of the woods. We walked in and we're told that they currently had a happy hour that was about to end so we got some items from the HH menu. I tried the cosmo and the hubs tried a Negroni. Both were good. We weren't hungry so we got a couple of the apps on the HH menu. The sweet potato humus and the fried hatch max and cheese. The hatch chili is just fried Mac and cheese but had almost 0 flavor. Salmon was good though maybe a bit overcooked. Good portion though. We had a party of 7 for early dinner. The chairs and table were set up when we arrived and the manager and waitress greeted us right away. The atmosphere is very nice. Restaurant was very Clean and just a nice place to unwind and enjoy friends. I ordered the salmon which was delicious. Service was great! The only down side to us was that Happy Hour prices were only given in the bar area. So in spite of 7 of us ordering dinner and appetizers, we werent treated to Happy Hour prices and the bar area could never have accommodated our party. I questioned the staff about this policy. They said that the policy was put in place to expand the bar business. The bar was virtually empty and that was the 2nd visit for me.
