We were initially told they were confident a recommended crown for my wife would be approved by insurance and that they would continue appealing until it was approved. After multiple appeals, insurance still denied coverage based on medical necessity criteria, leaving us with a large balance. Over time, the messaging shifted from confidence that it would be approved to comments that our insurance was "the worst," and eventually we were told the PPO contractual adjustment counted as a "discount," which felt misleading to us. As an aside, a different dentist later completed another crown for me that was approved by the same insurance, which made the earlier comments about our insurance being terrible harder to understand. Separately, this office recommended approximately 10 fillings for me personally. I later obtained a second opinion from another dentist who agreed with 2 recommendations. That large difference made me uncomfortable and contributed to my decision to seek care elsewhere. read more

Worst dental office experience I have ever had. I am not in any way afraid of the dentist so don't think that is the reason I am writing this. Crazy expensive procedures ($38 for one x-ray) and they also tried billing for things that weren't done. But once I called and called them out on it they took it off the bill immediately. So I'm that person. The one who is a full grown adult and is scared to go to the dentist. Like... scared to the level that I walk in and start crying. In my life I've had 10 years of braces, 4 oral surgeries- awake for 4, and a bridge out in due to damage on my braces. I'm not great with this fear. Ok. So three months ago I had the worst jaw pain. Finally got scared and went in. Dr. Smiley sees my husband and daughter, so I asked for her. She was gentle and wonderful and now I'm a proud owner of a night guard that I actually .... Like? Yeah I do. Then, I went in for my first cleaning in 17 years. I was not shamed. More like, they were so positive and kind about how my teeth were in surprisingly good shape. They were caring and wonderful. Didn't let me leave without scheduling my next, in a very kind way. Cut to yesterday. I did have 3 cavities. I was TERRIFIED and these wonderful humans called me the afternoon before to offer anxiety meds. (I had some, but talk about understanding your patient and being caring). I was in the chair for 3 hours but she was gentle, walked me through every step, and today my mouth is a little sore, but not much. Dare I say I'm not scared for my cleaning in February? West Springfield Dental Arts successfully got an extra $720 out of my family by using a court date scare tactic and summons hand delivered by courier to get us to pay for an add on cost that they never disclosed at the appointment. Shocking that a local dental office would do this, as word of mouth is so important. Steer far away from this place unless you want surprise bills! I even got a 2nd threat of a court date after paying what I thought was the final final bill after being invoiced by their lawyers, only to realize that there was another $58 due for legal fees! read more

I have to say, this was one of the best dental experiences I've had in my life. Dr. Smiley and her dental hygienist Trish were very personable and professional. Honestly, Trish was amazing! HOWEVER, I feel obligated to give them such a low score because of insurance issues. When I called ahead, I had been told that they accepted my insurance. Because my insurance can be rather particular, I recall asking outright if they took my specific insurance plan/DPO. Again, I was told yes. The day of the appointment, I hand over my insurance card, it is accepted, I have a great appointment with lovely service-all is well. Until two weeks or so later when I receive a bill for my appointment-a BIG bill for my appointment. I contact the payment department, and speak with a lovely woman who assured me that this is probably an error on my insurance provider's part, and that she will sort it out and call me back. She does, and explains that it's not an error on my insurance company's part, but my own. Because West Springfield Dental Arts does not take my insurance. And even though I asked and was told repeatedly that they took my insurance, and even though they took my insurance card at check in (and scanned it/recorded it in their files at the time), I was told that the error falls upon me. Apparently, they don't always look as carefully at the insurance cards as they should (this was, no kidding, how it was explained to me). Personally, I feel this is somewhat reckless and unprofessional and did not seem in line with the quality of service I otherwise received. Again, as far as a dental cleaning goes this was easily one of the more pleasant experiences I've ever had. However, not worth the headache. They clearly are so eager for new clients that they don't bother to even fully read an insurance card. I'm very disappointed in how this situation out, since I not only have a rather large (~$325) dental bill to pay that could have been easily avoided, but I will also obviously not be returning to a dentist and technician I really enjoyed. Very unfortunate situation, and I hope that my experience taught them to read the fine print before accepting everyone that turns up on their door step. Went for my 6 month check up, all went smoothly and there are many new procedures to make us all feel safer during this pandemic. There was no waiting in the waiting room, went straight to Christie's area and had my temperature checked on the way in. Today's appointment was not good. Too many unsuccessful attempts (4) at getting an acceptable X-ray. Also, 2 dental CT scans. The first was not accepted. Also, I was not informed beforehand that insurance doesn't cover dental CT scans, so it was "out of pocket." Not cheap. Had I been informed, I would have refused. WS Dental Arts makes going to the dentist almost delightful! They have a very efficient and friendly staff. The dental hygienists are top-notch and do a great job at cleaning my teeth. Dr. Hoffman is just fabulous. She has a great chair-side manner and gives me great feedback. I trust her implicitly. They have now implemented very patient-friendly add-ons to your visit - like offering you neck pillows (this was great!), blankets, etc. so that you are as comfortable as possible. They also do a great job at scheduling - they are always on time and I never have to wait. Very personalized experience. Highly recommend. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Neil's for years at this point and I couldn't imagine going to another dentist for my dental health needs. In fact, when I got married 3+ years ago, I (kindly) insisted that hubby change to this practice as well. Dr. Neil truly cares about his patients and seeing him at my 6 month check ups is like seeing a friend! Carol was my hygienist for years and I was so sad to hear about her leaving. Again, it was like seeing a friend! I am now booking my cleanings with different hygienists to see who I like the most. If you're looking for a dentist who truly cares, please see Dr. Neil! I find the office staff to be very organized and efficient at what they do and I'm always greeted with a smile! On a side note, I have been seen by the other two dentists in the office when Dr. Neil has been on vacation. I don't get as much of the "warm and fuzzies" from them, but I'm also not their patient. read more

I can't say enough good things about the entire staff at Northern Virginia Dental Associates. I used to be terrified of the dentist, so I just wouldn't go. That landed me in the middle of a root canal at age 24 - not good - this made me hate going to the dentist even more. I was recommended to these dentists by a friend of mine - and I'm so grateful. I go for cleanings every 6 months now, and have seen two different hygienists - Carol and Lori. Both are great. They made me feel perfectly comfortable and are very gentle with that scraper thing :) I've seen two of the dentists - Dr. Neil and Dr. Mark (most often) - and they are wonderful. I actually enjoy talking with them and I know they're being honest and upfront with me. It can sometimes take a long time to get an appointment, but if its an emergency, they always get you in ASAP. I'd highly recommend visiting this group - especially if you are nervous to go to the dentist and haven't been in a while. They've really helped me get over my fear of the dentist and I know I'm healthier for it! read more

Mostly unpleasant experience. Dental tech repeatedly made high pressure sales pitches, even after I explained my financial situation, and the fact that my dental insurance hardly covers anything. It was basically a combination of shaming and nagging while getting a dental cleaning. When I went in for a follow up appointment, a dental tool (drill bit) was lying on the floor, which looked like it hadn't been swept in a while, much less cleaned. When I questioned them about this lost drill bit, I got two different stories (one was that they never re-use them and throw them away after a single use, and the other was that they clean them in between uses). When I brought all of this up with the owner, I got basically, "We're sorry you feel this way, but we really don't believe there's a problem here." I hesitated between 1 and 2 stars, because the staff (other than the dental tech) were unfailingly polite and cheerful, but in the end it was a highly unpleasant experience, and I cannot trust them. read more

If I could give this office a zero I would. These people lied to me about the price I would have to pay for a mouth guard. I was told that my portion of the $720 cost would be $360 after insurance. I paid the amount before leaving the office, and then received a bill in the mail for $263 additional dollars. When I called, I was told "you were only given an estimate" that is a LIE! I was told exactly, "Your portion after insurance is 360." The horrible billing representative reminded me that I signed a form acknowledging I would pay my dental bills. Of course I paid it, because I pay my just debts, but they did not do me justice by lying to me about how much I would have to pay for this mouth guard. It would have been so simple just to tell the truth, rather than hose me later. Beware of this office's poor business practice and ensure you get it in writing, which the billing person suggested I should have done. Real professional advice after the fact. read more

Please be careful with the billing representative in this office. These people lied to me about the price I would have to pay for the veneer service.  I was told that the veneer services will be covered by my insurance, and received a statement showing $0 when the services rendered. However, I received a bill in the mail for $1,932.05 three months after the service. I never signed a form acknowledgement I would pay the amount of money. I called in to question the charges, and the billing representative said she will call me back after contacting my second insurance company to make sure if they could cover the cost, but she never called me back. When I called her again, she did not explain about the charges, and said "Well if you disagree, then I can send you to collections". I wanted the billing representative to tell me the truth, but she did not. I am deeply disappointed with the poor business practice. read more

I've been going here for years and this last time the "cleaning" was the same as it's always been, NOTHING DIFFERENT WHEN IT CAME TO THE CLEANING than the previous times, except this time they billed my insurance differently saying they did extra on the cleaning which they didn't. So I get a bill of what was left over that my insurance didn't cover. When I question the bill, I get lied to as they did not perform anything different than the cleanings in the past. First they said it was the fluoride treatment I got, then I said I denied the fluoride treatment, and then they changed it to oh we did a extra cleaning. They then said they don't always go off insurance and do what's best for the patient and I said even without telling the patient that this is not covered by their insurance? I didn't really get an answer. The hygienist just scraped off the plaque, polished my teeth, flossed them, and took X-rays. Then the dentist comes in and looks at my teeth for like 30 seconds and leaves...actually the fastest cleaning I've ever had here. I will be not be going back. read more

I had the misfortune of inheriting bad teeth from both my parents - I've had to have a lot of work done over the years. I see Dr. Coulter, and without a doubt she is the best dentist that I've ever had work on my teeth. Besides having had a great deal of work done, I've also had some terrible experiences in dentist offices - Dr. Coulter goes above and beyond to make her patients comfortable and - so far as possible - pain free. I can't say that I liked getting two fillings this past trip, but they had to be done and Dr. Coulter did a fast and painless job putting them in. Walked into day first time patient with a yearly visit appointment& cleaning. Front desk asked me for my parents home phone number. I am 24 and a registered nurse, I live alone, I'm an adult you don't need that- having my phone number is enough. They kept asking and when I asked why told me that it was just in case they had to SEND ME TO COLLECTIONS! Very rude& off putting. My appointment went well and I was seen on time. The delivery of my permanent crown and a filling on another tooth was made with no pain and the fit was perfect. The only disappointment was the $17.00 charge I had to pay for the PPE (coronavirus gowns and masks) that the staff was wearing. In this period of economic downturn I think we must all share the costs to include the dental offices and this cost should not be passed-on to the patients. This was easily the most painful dental experience I've had since the early 2000's when I needed a shot in the roof of my mouth. I've had 3 root canals in the last year which were a breeze compared to this "cleaning." The whole experience was odd. Being a military family, we've seen many, many dentists over the years. Northern Virginia Dental Associates' Dr. Kanli is the best so far. He takes the time to explain the necessary procedures clearly and concisely. His office staff is friendly and, even better, awesome with insurance claims. We have had no problems making appointments, and we are always seen immediately upon arrival. Dr. Kanli is fantastic with kids. My youngest needed four teeth pulled in preparation for braces. Because of his excellent care she recovered quickly and with no difficulty. I highly recommend Dr. Kanli for the entire family. read more
