Steve saved my day! I had made a refreshment stop along the Taconic Parkway and came out to find that my car wouldn't start. Not even a click. The battery was fine and there was plenty of gas. I went to call AAA, but found that I didn't have my card and couldn't access my membership number. I was about to panic a little when a van drove in with West Side Towing and Recovery on the side. I ran over to find a man and woman apparently out for a Saturday afternoon drive. They came over to my car immediately and the man (Steve) got under the car and said he had an idea what might be wrong. We got the car started after a few attempts, and Steve explained that the wire to the starter had corroded in the middle, and he had been under the car trying to bridge the wires enough to get the signal to the starter. And he told me not to turn off the car again until I got home. What was almost a panic was solved in about 10 minutes. If I had gone through AAA, I would probably have just been towed somewhere for service after the weekend and I would have had to get home and back on my own. Steve wouldn't accept any money but I gave him some anyway. I was super lucky he just happened to pull in, and he was super helpful without looking for anything in return. read more

Steve is simply awesome. Best repair shop in the area. I had a major issue with our commercial van and after getting a ridiculous quote from GM, I took it for a second opinion to Steve. Well, problem was resolved at 50% of the initial quote and it was done the same day. Should I have gone with the GM dealership, I would have had to wait 1 week. As the problem I had earlier this month began with what I originally didn't know were just spark plugs, we took my car in to be looked at one day. We initially brought it in and they said they wouldn't have time to look at it for several days (I'm an Uber driver and time=money and loss of time=loss of money), but they got it in the next day to just survey what would've been needed. They tried to upsell me several parts that were still good that didn't ask for at the time (we got them with a warranty elsewhere (sorry) and better installation in a more-timely manner). The owner (this is a family-owned team who goes by name) was nice and never charged, hoping never to hear back from me or anyone else, when we declined the upsold services that he never performed. He was nice about it and never charged. However, after picking up the key&remote set that day, I noticed that my door was slightly ajar and the keys were in the ignition (I could hear the dinging sound as I got close enough to hear it.). My mom (who's my financial helper and expert) said nothing to the owner and promised to each other never to come back for anything here again. (No. Unlike what happened when I didn't know Yelp's policy a bunch of years ago, this review won't be deleted or revised by me, unless I feel it should. Sorry, no can do.) read more

West side auto was a life saver!!! I got my car stuck in terrible mud and after hours of trying to get the car out and a failed call to AAA I found west side auto. I was super stressed out about the situation and they came with a smile and brought such calm to the situation. He never stopped until he got the car out and was extremely helpful. My son and I were on an epic (over 2,000 mile) road trip in my mother's car. The tire pressure light was on and we were in the middle of nowhere. I didn't know what to do about it, and was especially worried because of our location and being on some roads with no shoulders and just rock walls next to us. Based on a local suggestion, I went to West Side Auto. They spent 20 minutes with the car and couldn't find anything wrong. They reset the light and refused to take any money because there was nothing to fix. I offered to pay or tip, and they refused. Where I come from, there would DEFINITELY be a labor charge. Too bad I'm thousands of miles away - I'd love to find an auto shop like this at home. read more

If you live in Red Hook or the surrounding area, you should definitely take your car here!!! Everyone, including Sam (the sweet lady in the office), is honest and genuinely cares about you and your vehicle. I took my car to the shop about a week ago and Steve (owner) looked at my car right away, was very knowledgable about the issues with it and explained each problem clearly to me. It's a nice feeling to know that there is a local auto shop that will not suggest unnecessary repairs because they know what they're doing. Upon leaving after my first visit at WSA I was determined to spread the good word on every social media site that I could. Came here with my 2004 Toyota Highlander that I had been told (by a Toyota certified mechanic) needed a $1500 repair (bearings). Not only did West Side fit me in and test drive my car when I didn't have an appointment, but after the mechanic didn't hear the noise, he took me out to test drive with him. We even went down to River Rd., where I told him i always heard the noise, and he assured me it couldn't be bearings because I would hear bearing issues at high speeds, which i wasn't. They really reassured me after I was freaked out about possibly having to spend $ on repairs, and I'll definitely be going back. read more
