Before noon on a Thursday the place was almost full which is a pretty good indication of its popularity of good food. Both hubby and I ordered the steak and eggs, his with the biscuit and gravy and mine with a pancake. The steak was cooked well. I ordered my eggs over hard but they came out like scrambled just in one piece so that was disappointing. Pancake was delicious, served w warm syrup and biscuit and gravy were pretty good. Service was great and all the servers were really friendly. While we waited for our food, I was so impressed when I saw a gentleman cleaning the table. Alright, first of all, this is an old school diner. That means it's been around the block a few times. It's an older establishment that has, from my experience and the reviews, been churning out good food for many years. If you're over 70, have thin blood and thick patience, you're going to have a GREAT time. If this place has some sort of nostalgic value for you, you'll probably have an okay time. If you're looking for a feel-good, southern experience served greasy-spoon style, keep on driving and find Denny's. This place has never been my favorite, but my family often shackles me in family obligation and drags me to it. The food is mediocre, bland and dull. The pancakes and the patty melt are the only things I've found that I really like on the menu, everything else I've tried lacks spice and passion. It's undoubtedly the same menu since they've opened and most of their clientel is the same too... As well as the decor. It seems like every server I've ever had barely speaks above a whisper, treats your table as if were fresh out of quaranteen and is happy to place the ticket on your table right as they serve your meal. However, we WERE offered front row seats to a really fantastic interview conducted by a manager and a former wal-mart employee while we waited for them to set up our table. Not awkward at all. I really liked the way the cashier blatantly displayed annoyance when the group of 5 I was part of, ordered our pie to go up front since our waitress became Mr. Magoo near our table once the food and ticket were served together. She even made sure to be as dramatic as possible and ask someone else to write the 5 pie order down so she could concentrate on not paying attention. On that note, the pie was delicious in the confines of my home and I was much happier. I've had decent service here before, but not enough to convince me that this outdated, grimy place is worth my dime. But hey, if you wanna buy my dinner, I'll go. Weird place to a big city oriented girl but I was hungry on the cheap. The itty bitty table they put me at had people and staff constantly bumping my chair. Try eating that way. Actually once I added hashbrowns to my traditional breakfast the price was comparable to anywhere else I've been. Bacon eggs toast or biscuit n hashbrowns $7 bucks. Same as everywhere else pretty much. Biscuit was completely forgettable. Taste like the Pillsbury ones that come in a can. Turkey bacon n hashbrowns were just ok. Staff were nice but didnt really pay much attention in my opinion if your glass was empty or whatever. I really dont like places that give you that 1 paper napkin they roll the silverware in thats been touched by a million hands and no offer of more napkins. I keep wipes in my purse for this reason. Line goes by fast if you go on the weekend. Chicken fried steak or chicken is a couple bucks cheaper than TX Roadhouse but the rolls looked cold. I was checking out other folks side items and they looked less than mouth watering. If I was over that way I would go back but nothing special here. Dont go out your way. read more

Really liked this place! The food was really good--the biscuits were fresh & fluffy, the gravy was light and not too heavy. The sausage was also light and didn't seem like it had sat under a heat lamp for an hour like other places, and my eggs were cooked exactly as I ordered them. This is the first time my wife has ordered bacon extra crispy and it came out just right. They just seem to know what they're doing in the kitchen! The service was attentive, but not overbearing. And the food came out pretty fast. It has an old diner decor and feel, but they seem to run everything very well. The place was still packed at 10:30 am! Can't wait to try lunch sometime! P.S. Never disappointed here. Good food, good prices, wonderful staff. The breakfasts are the best, after 10;30 you can request chicken fried steak and eggs even though it isn't on the menu. For lunch, the CFS is an excellent choice, loved the chicken and dumplings, the greens are fantastic, real mashed potatoes, and on Sundays the turkey and dressing plate can't be beat. Can't speak as to the liver and onions (yurgh) but my husband swears by them. Even tho the lines can get a bit long, the seating time is actually pretty fast, and you get some excellent people-watching in the meantime. (The bathrooms are clean but could use an update.) Both times I've been here was only for breakfast. I would really like to try them for lunch at some point. My husband I visited a few Sundays ago. The parking lot was packed but we they were able to seat us right away. The place is much larger than it first appears. I ordered the steak and eggs with biscuit and gravy and he ordered the three egg western omelette. I had enough left over for another meal. The steak was pretty good, hashbrowns and eggs were cooked perfectly, and biscuit was fluffy and hot. Their prices are also very reasonable. I can see why this place was so packed! I used to come here when I was younger living in Fort Worth. I completely forgot about this place up until last year when I happened to drive by it. Nostalgia completely took over me and I knew we just had to go. I have to say, it had been about 15 years since I had been, but nothing has changed. And I mean that in the best way possible. The food is absolutely fantastic. I get the same thing every time I come here: Chicken Fried Steak, Mac and Cheese, and a Dinner Salad. Back in the day, my family used to love to go to West Side Cafe. The wait staff was made up of sassy, elderly women who loved to bust your chops and laugh with you! Today, we were feeling nostalgic after church and so we went back after having not been there in probably 10 years. I got the chicken and dumplings. My husband and son both opted for the chicken fried steak. Upon first look of the chicken and dumplings, I realized what a terrible mistake I had made! The color of the soup was yellow. The chicken was canned. The dumplings were rubbery. It literally looked like someone had just put a bowl of dog food in front of me. My husband's chicken fried steak failed miserably when compared to the quality back in the day. This was a steak that was not only paper-thin, but he said it tasted as if it had been previously frozen. Thankfully, the rolls were still homemade and had a very good flavor. The wait staff was more than attentive! Every person that walked by our table asked if they could top off our tea. The only reason that I am giving West Side Cafe two stars is because of the wonderful wait staff and the delicious rolls! As far as a return visit, I'll see you in another 10 years! read more
