Hi everyone! If you follow my reviews, Ya'all know I have an affinity for divy mom and pop restaurants. Then you should not be surprised I stopped at Benbrook Cafe when I saw it driving by! Benbrook Cafe is a great, divy, blast from the past cafe. The ambiance is 60's retro without trying to be. The service is very good and extremely homey. But it the food and the prices that will keep you coming back! I had the chicken fried steak lunch special. A very nice piece of homemade chicken fried steak. Mashed potato's. Coleslaw. We visit Benbrook Cafe fairly often. It's kind of an old school place. The food is good and the service is friendly, but the decor isn't going to win any prizes. Think dive bar but it's a cafe. And that's ok. If you are looking for a good breakfast (that's what we always go there for) it's a spot to check out. Their breakfast burrito is one of the better ones around and they always have specials on the whiteboard. I am torn over Benbrook Café. I wanted so badly to fall in love, but it was just all right. It did not help they caused that the food took a very long time to get to our table, and they seem to be shortstaffed. We stopped by this unassuming little cafe near Benbrook for pie and coffee. The cafe was bustling with customers, but the service was fast and friendly. We ordered two coffees, a slice of chocolate pie, a slice of coconut pie, and a basket of French fries. Both pies were delicious, and we never had to wait for a coffee refill. The fries were pretty soggy and greasy at the bottom of the basket, but that happens sometimes...especially in small town cafes. I'm rarely in this area, but really wanted breakfast. Unfortunately I missed the morning specials, by like 10 minutes or so (before 11). Breakfast served so day, though, but they have a board with all breakfast and lunch specials. I decided to get their Belgium waffle, over easy eggs, and for the meat, just choose bacon (can also get sausage links or sausage patties). It came with 2 eggs and 4 bacon strips. For starters, the waffle. It was very tasty and aside from hotels, never see the Texas shaped waffles (only in Texas, do we have waffles in the shape of the state lol). They gave me well more than enough syrup and butter for this. The bacon was crispy and flavorful, and the over easy eggs were actually done correctly (most places it's so runny, it's just slightly more than sunny side up. Also decided to order a slice of pie. It was very good, though if ever end up around here again, think would prefer their chocolate coconut one, since there might be a reason that's only one that was down to 1 slice. It actually tasted like they make it there, even the crust tasted homemade. It tasted very good, but unfortunately too rich for me to finish it, due to the peanut butter chips on top, as well as peanut butter inside. The cost for all of this amazing food? Barely over $11. I ordered it to go, so can't speak of the wait staff, though everyone I spoke to was very nice and I didn't feel rushed at all to place the order, and had plenty of time to look over their menu. read more

We tried Benbrook Cafe for the first time today. It's the Cafe of the past, where if you can't find something there that you want to eat--then you're not hungry. Service was very good but not hovering to the point you can't enjoy your meal. I really relished the Chicken Fried Steak and Hubby was thrilled over real home-cooked type foods. Think next time I'll try the open-faced roast beef sandwich. Being a Southern Lady I must mention the Sweet Tea was just right not too sweet and absolutely NO watery or bitter taste.. Don't let the outside appearance fool you, huge portions of homemade food that would put your grandma's cooking to shame. Do yourself a huge favor and skip the hotel breakfast of microwave powdered eggs and turkey sausage and find this place. Possibly the best breakfast we've ever had at a restaurant. I had a scramble with American fries, bacon, sausage and sour dough toast. My wife had the "Hobo" daily special which was a large pile of hash browns, biscuits and scrambled eggs covered with a very generous amount of homemade sausage gravy that was simply unbelievable. We're in the area until tomorrow and all ready decided that we're going back tomorrow. We both were so full that we had to pass on a slice of their homemade pies but they looked wonderful. read more

I also ordered to-go meals for my son and granddaughters, including a medium cooked sirloin and eggs for my son. we waited forever for the to-go order. when it finally came out, the waitress assured me everything was as we ordered. when we got to our son's home, he found that the sirloin was burned and tough as a boot! that's why the waitress didn't want me to check his order before we left the cafe. as stated above, it's awful! don't go there! read more

Update! It was in fact just a bad day! I had visited a week a go and the gravy was so over salted that it left everything on the plate inedible. I told the waitress today about it and she was shocked. She said that should be impossible because they use a mix. I said maybe it was my tastebuds. She didn't think so and brought me a condiment cup of it and she was right, I said someone must have spilled a whole shaker or jar of salt in the gravy pot. She said that had happened before and next time please tell them and they will fix it. The CFS was still tough and the beans under seasoned she told me they were working on the CFS and that it sounded like the new assistant cook forgot to stir a brand new pot of beans before ladling. I completely believe her. That said I don't think I will come for anything but breakfast. Kid and I tried it this morning. He had 2 pancakes, 2 bacon and 2 scrambled eggs. I had the Southern breakfast. 3 eggs over medium, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, sausage biscuit gravy and hash browns.I gave my son my bacon because he is a rapidly growing 11 year old. He thought it was the best bacon he had ever tasted. If you are like us and like chewy bacon it really was very very good. I would love to know their provider. His eggs were standard flat top hard scramble and mine were much closer to over easy than medium, but that was ok because the hash browns soaked the yolk up well. All in all the breakfast was extremely good ( on par with R&K in Weatherford, possibly better). Coffee was very good. I also got the iced tea ( unsweetened) and it was perfect. (Turns out Community brand tea and coffee are my favorites it seems!) To give you an idea of how much food we got. I am a fat guy. My son is an eating machine of a tween. We couldn't eat it all! This diner gives you exactly what you want and expect: solid diner food at great prices. It's busy every time I go, but I always get takeout. I've tried the chicken fried steak, burger, and steak and eggs so far. Chicken fried steak was smothered in the white gravy. Burger is big and comes with a PILE of homemade fries. I wish they had some kind of special sauce for the burger, but this isn't that kind of place. Steak and eggs, I got the smallest steak option and it was HUGE plus eggs, homefries, and toast. Well, I quit going here, because the food just wasn't good. I let my friends talk me into trying it again. I have to admit the food wasn't bad in the last 4 or 5 times I've gone. If they could get control of the insect problem so we don't have to eat with one hand and shoo flies with the other, and brush the to roaches off of the table, it would be ok, I guess, but the city of Fort Worth health department citations leads me to believe this is an ongoing issue. First timers. When we drove up on a Sunday after church, I asked my husband, "Are you sure you want to eat here?" It didn't look very inviting. We went in and other than empty counter seats, the place was packed! The server had to clear a table for us. My husband's philly cheesesteak was good. His seasoned curly fries were not curly but were crunchy and tasty. We ordered a chicken melt with curly fries to go and realized we had to change the curly fries to seasoned fries or we would have gotten regular fries, as they have no curly fries. At home, we added lettuce to the chicken melt and it was good! I had the chalkboard board special of chicken fried steak with two sides - it was average. The board listed 'cup of soup' as a side, but when I asked, the red haired server said they don't serve it now. It's on a chalk board. Why don't they erase it? The salad was mostly aging pieces of lettuce with chunks of tomato and tiny carrot slivers. The Italian dressing served on the side was good. It was nice to have a small container of crackers on the table as we had a little one with us and it gave him something to eat while waiting for our order. I liked the captain's wafers. My other side of green beans was over- cooked, but had lots of bacon bits. The side roll was warm, but a bit dense and not soft. The lemonade tasted artificial. After the second sip, I didn't want any more. The children's grilled cheese was toasty crisp with buttered deliciousness! The side fries were plain and the two I had were too soft, kinda limp. There were also several flies around the counter. I didn't see a fly strip or something to deal with the problem. Our "redhead" server never came by to check on us, nor acknowledge our leaving. She was too busy talking. We were able to get the attention of a pretty, young brunette to get a take out box and our check. I love this local diner! It's everything a diner should be: funny and interesting characters on staff, cheap yet delicious food, and a lived-in look inside. Even after a remodel, they didn't try to fancy it up, they just gave it a newer look. If you've been here before, you'll see a lot of the same furniture and fixtures from prior to the remodel. The layout didn't change much, but they did lose the counter. The menu is vast and contains your normal favorites - lots of egg and bacon combos, chicken fried steak, and general American fare. West Side Cafe is still the measure of what diner fare is in Ft Worth (West Side). I came to Benbrook Cafe because at 10:00 West Side was as busy as Studio 54 in the 70's! Standing room only. We came to Bbk cafe on a recommendation. (Bad move). Anyway...the plates are plastic bistro. Ate kitchen is tiny and you hear all the drama... and there was drama. We got the omelette which looked like 2 fried eggs folded up. Along with loosely cooked potatoes that were supposed to be hash browns. The pancakes were loose and a little dry. Should I go on? I haven't even got to the coffee....I'll stop there. Go straight to West Side. It's worth every minute you have to wait (sigh). read more

We ate here the first time the other day. It's not horrible, just not to our taste. I think only one waitress was working but she was friendly and remembered to bring us what we needed. Noticed that she did defer to her regulars and served them first, but that's okay, just not something that would sit well with some customers. We ordered the Turkey and dressing special and after I scooped away the over abundance of gravy as much as I could, the flavor was good, but a little salty. Also the food is extremely mushy, which would be great if you're on a soft foods diet. We tried the chocolate pie afterwards but it was not good at all. First off the service is great! We had such an enjoyable time with Desiree! She knows the entire menu and knows all the extra questions to ask to make sure you have your perfect meal!
