This place is a complete gem in Akron! I custom ordered a cake and cookies for my law school graduation from this bakery. They did a MAGNIFICENT job! The cake was in the shape of a law school book, with a fondant gavel on top. Beautiful. It easily beat the Pinterest inspiration picture I provided them. More importantly, it was delicious. West Side Bakery made our wedding cake, and I chose it because of it's good local reputation. I was sorely disappointed and frustrated. My fiance and I initially went in and met with the owner to discuss options and pricing. We were very clear on wanting to stay within a reasonable (low) budget, and she gave us an estimated price and said it was doable. Months went by, and they never contacted us. We finally contacted them and set up an appointment to finalize the cake. I went in with my mom and she kept us waiting and then reprimanded us for waiting, telling me "most brides have their cake finalized by this point" and she "thought of calling me" but didn't, obviously. We explained to her what we were thinking and the price had jumped WAY higher without any explanation on her part. At this point we were desperate and had kitchen cakes made to help with the cost. If we had time we would have gone elsewhere. My mom kept trying to call in (as they had asked, to give a guest number) and the owner was always busy and could not be disturbed--as my mom put it, "quite the queen there." I tried so hard to keep to budget while wedding planning, and the unexpected cake total totally blew it. The owner was very hard to work with and belittling. In the end, the cake did NOT fit what I had described to her--and after paying so much! I was so mad I tried to put it from my mind during the wedding and not fixate on it. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. I have heard so many things about this bakery, so we decided to go and see what types of bakery goods the sale, never did I realize that the person who assisted was very disrespectful which I will never visit this bakery again. The person name that was displayed was Kim, even when it was time to pay Kim tone was toward us was very negative, we tried to be positive but when other people were getting treated nicely and when it was time for us to request our bakery treats, only to be treated negative. I never try to play the race card, but this was the one time I will use it. If your African American just record yourself or have someone else record it, especially if Kim is there and you will experience what am trying to say. As a vegan, it is often difficult to find bakeries that offer a variety of cake flavors and fillings, but West Side Bakery has a wonderful selection. I called this afternoon to get details of their offerings and prices for the items for a wedding shower and girl on phone was helpful, I stated that I would be in before they closed to drop off ribbon color samples and place my order. I went in @4:30 (they close at 5) and clerk is mopping the floor. She says that she will be right with me, and proceeds to finish mopping the floor. Asks me what I need. I explained that I had called earlier, got the information and prices and was just there to place the actual order and drop off the ribbon colors. She kept going to the back and came out saying that someone was on the phone and she would see how long they were going to be. Comes out and asks me if she can get my info and have someone call me because they ARE closing in 20 minutes (so that means that they are still OPEN for 20 minutes, right???) I said that I could not come back during the week, that I would be without my vehicle for servicing and I just wanted to place the order now. She said again, well we can have someone call you. I left less than pleased and without placing my order, which would have been very close to $200 for what I was going to order for the shower for 80 ladies. I will be telling all of them about my experience. When a business states that they are open until a certain time, they ought to be prepared to wait on customers until that time. I won't be stopping in for lunch anymore, buying anything again. I am just tired of crappy customer service, like the customer is a bother for stopping in while they are still open and expecting to be serviced. read more

I was referred to this bakery by a friend from work for my daughter's (vegan) birthday cake. I am a nurse at a local hospital so I paid more to have it delivered. First they lost my order and I got a call right around the time that it was to be delivered to my work to inform me of this. They substituted another cake (but not the one I wanted and at the same price) and delivered it about an hour later. The cake looked lopsided and it appeared to be hastely decorated. The lemon filling in the cake was really awful tasting. We have a large family (eight children) and more than half the cake was left after two days, which is unheard of in our house. I then called the bakery and talked to the manager and explained the situation. She wanted me to bring the uneaten portion to work with me so she could personally see what was left. It was such a hassle that it really wasn't worth it to me to drag it around. I paid over $60 for a 1/4 sheet cake that got thrown away. They offered me a discount on my next purchase....No thanks. read more

I've raved about their delicious cookies before but then I tried their pastries: the Cream Puffs, New York Style Cheesecake, and I ordered a birthday cake for the 2nd time. This time I am truly disappointed. The pastries were awfully dry. I had the cream puffs before and they were good. However this time, my husband got it for me and two days later, they were hard as a rock! The New York Style Cheesecake tasted more on the whipped cream side. No cream cheese taste at all. Yes, they also have the Classic New York Style but the whipped cream overpowered everything. That is not cheesecake if it tasted like whipped cream. The birthday cake? It was a custom birthday cake for my 3 year old. I picked a butterfly and flower design with polka dots all over. There were two butterflies and one of them, the bottom wings looked uneven. On top of that within 5 days, the cake was dry and hard. So with that being said, I'm going to take my love for cookies, cakes, and desserts somewhere else now.. read more

I was amazed at the fine artistry of the bridal shower cake I ordered. The letters of a selected poem were intricate and very fine--not an easy task! The free-style flowers flowed lightly & gently across the cake. I also requested two sketches of a bride & groom, four characters total, and those were adorable. They also managed two add to other small, but meaningful pieces of artwork that I hoped they could include. The cake was a double-layer almond cake (white) with the chocolate ganache filling (awesome) and a white buttercream frosting. Very fresh. There were many compliments. I have been enjoying 2 low fat blue berry scones and a cinnamon roll (for my wife) almost every Saturday since moving to the area 7 years ago, (Have also purchased many wonderful loaves of bread, cakes and pies.) Today, Saturday 9-19-15, I made my usual trip in. When I handed my credit card to the lady behind the counter, she explained that their ability to accept credit cards was down. She wanted to take my name and credit card # down on a legal pad and charge it later......no, no.....I was not comfortable with that. The cost was to be $7.50, I had $7 on me....I thought that she would say, "you're a good customer...forget it"....or even..."catch us next Saturday".....Instead, she actually took a scone out of the bag. My husband and I got our wedding cake and desserts for our wedding from West Side Bakery. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect cake, and it was the best cake I've ever tasted! The hazelnut is beyond delicious! The decorations on the cake were exactly what we were looking for and even the fondant was yummy! We liked the cake so much, when we got back from the honeymoon we couldn't wait a whole year to eat the top of the cake! HIGHLY recommended! We'll definitely be back! First of all I don't even believe this place deserves one star. Many people rave about this bakery so I decided to give it a try. I went in a few weeks ago with my husband and we both got chocolate cupcakes. We sat at one of the tables and tried eating the cupcakes but they were terrible! I mean they were dry and crumbly and the icing was disgusting. But that isn't even why I am giving this place one star! As my husband and I sat at the table we overheard a few people who worked there talking terribly about the owner of the bakery! They were talking about how everyone is quitting because she is so mean and she treats her employees poorly. I mean I don't think they even realized that my husband and I were sitting on the other side of the counter!! We were finished with our cupcakes so we stood up and went to the counter to ask what we should do with our tray and were totally ignored by the three employees who were to busy gossiping to give us the time of day. Finally my husband said excuse me.. What do we do with our tray? And they looked over and one of the girls said just leave it there. And went back to gossiping. So much for getting some cookies for our kids... Anyways I do not recommend this place. I ordered 3 dozen French macarons for my sisters baby shower (key lime, almond, and raspberry). When I went to go pick them up from the Green location they charged me 96 dollars for them. I couldn't believe it but went through with it because it was the same day and didn't have any other options. When I got home to look at the box it was even worse. They made maple instead of raspberry and they honestly were the WORST looking macarons I have ever seen. Small, broken, and they just threw them in the box sloppy. Now I expect to pay more at West Side, but the presentation better be PERFECT. This was appalling to me for them to charge me 2.67 a cookie. I immediately called and the girl was polite and said the owner would call me on Monday and I could get a refund (I told her we will not be serving them). Monday came along, didn't hear from the owner, but a manager, and all they would offer me was a $45 gift card to WSB... Terrible customer service and product, will NOT be going back. read more
