Don't be fooled by the name. This place isn't much like a Safeway at all. Honestly it's a bit more....how do you say....FANCY. (Twists mustache) Thriftway does have more a gourmet feel that the other grocers in the area. You will certainly find those harder to find ingredients here. Coconut cream? Romanesco Broccoli? Cream of tartar? Yawn. They got it. You'll have to search for something even fancier like glitterberries or unicorn shank to stump these guys (Glitterberries aren't real. With that said.... aisle 7). Let's start with a really friendly and helpful staff. Good customer service is the way to my heart and they have enough here to throw away. Maybe even enough to loan those bozos at the Safeway down the street but that's another review. There are plenty of reasons to like this store besides having a competent staff. They have a extensive beer and wine selection, a top notch deli, and hi quality kitchen ware. My favorite part of the experience oddly is their coffee and donuts. STELLAR. If you go early enough you have your pick from a wonderful assortment. I'll put the quality on par with Original Bakery. Their baristas are also surprising really good. If all that isn't enough they even have a Chase Bank so you can visit your money before you give it all to them. Which brings me to one of my few gripes this place is kinda pricey. But one of the first things my father ever taught me was "You get what you pay for." Never truer than here. Oh one more thing.....During rush hour and before Seahawks games the parking lot is COMBAT. I don't know much about organic produce or wine or cheese. But I can say this about Thriftway: Their blue-cheese/scallion burger patties are simply some of the best things in West Seattle! Stop by and pick up a pair of patties and fire them up when the weather gets nice again - you will not be disappointed! Furthermore the people who work there are pretty great and cheerful and easy-going. The ladies behind the deli counter are super helpful and always offer a sample of whatever deli meat or cheese I pick up. The checkers are all friendly and eager to help out. Never a long line in Thriftway! The flowers are also pretty great. I don't know much about flowers but the few women who've been lucky to get some from me (or unlucky?) have been very happy with my selections (thanks to Thrifway)! I can really only comment on the beer selection, since that's the main reason I come here! They have a huge selection with all the good seasonal beers! So many beers you can't find at normal grocery stores. Also love their cheese selection, and fresh baked goodies! Love that they support local businesses! And the staff is so nice! read more

Excellent local market, well worth supporting. It's not easy to compete with the big stores, but they go all out with good quality stuff and a genuinely helpful and friendly staff. Pricing is decent with many items, and with a number of pricier ones as well- I think spanning the experience from QFC to Whole Foods or a local gourmet co-op. I cannot say enough good things about Stephanie in the deli and catering department. My wedding is coming up this summer and we have an outdoor venue with no kitchen services. Thankfully we can bring our own food however trying to find something affordable within these limitations has been a challenge. After calling so many catering, party platter - JJ, Port of Subs, Costco, etc. Stephanie went above and beyond. We told her how we were doing pizza and needed side dishes. She worked with us on our guest list 90-100 people, gave a thorough food breakdown, gave suggested food pairings and showed us the size of deposable containers to get to serve. She also meet with us and did a tasting in the store with more food than we asked for while staying later than she was scheduled to do so. I could not believe the amazing customer service Stephanie gave us and how much better I feel about our upcoming wedding. Not to mention that Thriftway was about 30-50% cheaper than everywhere else we looked! I am telling everyone that is having a party, wedding, baby shower etc to talk to Stephanie at Thriftway first. Melody at the West Seattle Thriftway Floral shop is amazing. She was recommened to us by a client. She did the bouquets and boutonnieres for our wedding party. The prices were very reasonable, she worked within our budget to give us the flowers we had wanted. I was beyond thrilled when she came through for me and got peonies for my bouquet which are hard to come by in the fall. You'd be hard pressed to find better customer service at any other grocer. Managers have picked up after my kids, the cheese people give them samples and have a lot of knowledge to share when questioned, the florist gave my daughter a balloon, and the whole team took care of me on a double stroller, lost wallet, crying babies, huge hill rainy kind of day. So, I recently stopped in at the Thriftway and just had to write a note because it reminded me of what a great grocery store this is. I think Karen Westby at all we really have a lot of great options and all the grocery stores seem to be pretty good. There seems to be a grocery store every half-mile as you drive down California Avenue. But a couple of my favorites would have to be Thriftway and Metropolitan market. One thing that I think about when I come to the Thriftway is all the great things that are packed into such a small location. Or maybe they just have such a broad variety that they're getting as much product in as they can. One example that I like is there Eastern European frozen food section, where they have a lot of Great choices including palmeni and ice cream. This store also has a great bakery and they're great selection there the produce section always has great produce and there are great organic options also. But, I think what I appreciate the most is the great cashiers that work here they're always very friendly and helpful and I'm always happy to come back. read more

This grocery store is WAY too expensive for what it is selling. It is basically PCC or Whole Foods price but has the same selection as Safeway. The only reason I go to it is because it is close but even then 9/10 times I drive to the Safeway. On top of the high prices, the staff isn't the most friendly. They aren't mean per-se, but for the price I'm paying I would expect them to be more polite and friendly towards. We left and went to QFC where Ben & Jerry's was $2.99 per pint (it was a sale price, but the non-sale price was only $3.99.) This is my favorite grocery store, hands down. It might be pricier than stores like Safeway, but it's locally owned with far superior quality food (and more affordable than places like PCC or Whole Foods)! Every employee is helpful and friendly. They will go out of their way to help you. There's samples daily, the occasional wine tasting (of GREAT wine), not to mention the CUTEST kitchen items... I pretty much impulse buy something on a weekly basis. It's impossible not to. They even have a bulk section! Love it, seriously can't speak more highly about any grocery store. read more

Horrible policy when it comes to vertical ID cards for purchasing alcohol. They gave some lame story about being busted for accepting a fake vertical ID in the past. Honestly, if they got busted taking a horizontal ID, would they implement the same policy and not sell alcohol at all? Never been turned away at any bar, restaurant, or grocery store using this ID. YES there is a large selection of local/organic/better tasting/better for you things You will also pay more for all those things, AND all of your regular everyday things. You will pay a lot more. You will see the price you paid later on your bank statement and wonder "What the hell is TW South Seattle?". You'll think back for a while, remember you had to stop at "Thrift"way (are you guys kidding me with that name?), and wonder how the hell you spent that much money on two days worth of very simple food. To the people who are saying its a "tad" more expensive, or that it's just a couple bucks on a $100 grocery bill, I'm not trying to be a jerk but- no. I buy the same things almost every time I grocery shop, as I can't stop eating about four specific dishes I like to make for myself. I noticed the prices on the items I would normally buy, (usually only the store brand, or regular produce) were between 25-50% higher then at QFC or Safeway. Yes, you pay a premium price for premium food, but here you pay a premium price for "normal people" food too. Why the hell would I do that when the service at the Westwood QFC is far friendlier? Yeah, the line moved quickly, but I'd rather wait two more minutes so I can pay less and have a friendly conversation elsewhere. read more

I give them 4 stars because their deli sandwiches are bomb. I live acrioss the street so I will walk there on occasion if I am in desperate need of some food. Their prices are CRAY! The bags of jolly ranchers they have are $4.19. At Rite-Aid, the same bag is $2.47. That should give you an idea of how much they charge. They have a huge parking lot and I parked my band's van in the back for about 7 hours one night while they were closed. They towed the van about 20 minutes after the place opened. Thanks read more

Ahhh I heart Thriftway. I wish we had Thriftway stores in CA. I could easily spend an hour here just wandering around looking at everything. They have a cute coffee bar/cafe, an amazing deli, cheese cheese cheese, an olive bar, more kinds of bottled drinks/beer I have ever seen, a gift shop... and all sorts of interesting day to day items. Only complaint - it's expensive. Really expensive. But that's to be expected since this is a kinda gourmet/organic/fancy grocery store. read more

I agree that it's not they thriftiest choice - however it seems like a good combination of a higher end store such as PCC with a more common store like QFC as it has some nice high quality/local items but plenty of staples as well. It's one of the only stores I shop at that doesn't leave me feeling stressed out at the end. I like the produce and especially their prepared meats and the deli. Oh, Thriftway. There are no words. Just kidding, I have many. Thriftway kicks all sorts of grocery store ass. The bakery items and pastries and desserts are heavenly. The deli is super fantastic (their hot items are amazing for quick dinners). The staff is helpful and pleasant. The meat selection is pretty fine and the organic produce makes me heart skip a beat. I also thoroughly enjoy the section in back with all the nifty kitchen gadgets and decor. One thing I don't like, but will continue to put up with, is the price. Why is a block of cheese going for $15? Sure, it's tasty and melts in my mouth, but for $15 I would hope it would clean my house, too. read more

It is such a little thing but a big frustration as this has similarly happened several times before...I was just at Thriftway (my neighborhood mkt) buying a small snack before my workout...I waited in line for several minutes waiting for them to call extra checkers. They did! The two clerks came and took the third and fourth people behind me. No worries, I simply move check stands and take my place behind the woman who used to be behind me. Of course, this is a misstep. They did call for more clerks and guess who they take to the new check stand!?! The customer behind me! Two plums at under .50 and well over 7 minutes to check out...because three clerks decide not to take the next in line. Really?!?! It's easy to solve! read more

Good selection of fringe foods and delicatessen. Never needed any assistance so I'm not sure how their customer service is. The only reason I shop here is because it's in walking distance of my apartment, otherwise I probably wouldn't. Almost everything in this store is OVERPRICED. We've lived on the hill above this store for decades. Shopped there before the fire, and since. Five blocks away, so very convenient. Have known for a few years that they have rip-off prices. Now they've become unfriendly, and sometimes downright mean to customers. We now shop exclusively at Trader Joe's and Safeway. Longer drive, but MUCH better shopping experience. I love that this place has a good variety of just about everything. There is also a good local feel to it and everyone is super friendly. Some products are more expensive than what you would find in "regular stores" (mushrooms!!) but you can get Ellenos yogurt here, they make their own jerky, they have a wine selection suggestion list, they sell all sorts of goodies in their deli case and their bakery case, and way way more. I highly recommend shopping here at least once! read more

I love this Thriftway! If I had an unlimited amount of cash, I would shop here exclusively. The trick is having a mental "price check" to know which items are a little too highly priced. Every week there are rotating core items (bread, cheese, meat) that go on sale...such as a 2lb loaf of Tillamook medium cheddar for $4.99. However, some "staple" items (like canned goods) are overpriced and you would be better off going to Safeway. I personally have a cocktail of grocery stores that I like. You can walk in and get coffee, pick up some bakery treats, select a snack (or even dinner) from the deli, get some gourmet cheeses, treat all of your ailments with their varied selection of herbal remedies and OTC meds, and pick up pre-marinated meat at the butcher...what's not to like? They also have a really cute little kitchen/housewares section - somewhat overpriced but very tempting. I have rarely waited behind more than one person in line. Their staff are really helpful, and I don't have to search for 15 minutes to find someone to help me. Overall, a great store! read more

I have even found some of the products I like to buy at the Metropolitan Market cheaper than at this "Thrift"way! contrary to common belief, grocery shopping can be a great way to spend an hour. sure, swinging through an albertsons at 5:30 is a surefire to ruin your afternoon, but when done right, it can be very pleasant. and planning on doing it right means planning on a trip to the west seattle thriftway. now i must say- i love my whole foods, my trader joe's, my metropolitan markets, etc, but sometimes you DON'T need something that is over the top high end, totally organic, raised by honest american hippies, etc. and sometimes, you'd prefer to not spend $250 on groceries. thriftway gets it just right. national brands alongside the yuppie/hippie stuff; it's great. i can get my loaf of local organic wheat bread along with a bag of doritos- not that that i eat doritos or really even know what they are because i'm too sophisticated... anyway, the staff is helpful, the espresso is high quality, and they might have the last cheese counter in the entire world that gives away samples! and not only that, but TWO SAMPLES each day!! pretty cool that they are still able to that when we are clearly in an economy where it not advisable to be handing out free imported cheeses. but way to go nonetheless thriftway. read more

It looks like people are taking away stars for price, but I'm looking at value: service, price, quality. I'm just down the street from Thriftway so I'm in here a lot. For staple items, sure, I could go to the Asian grocery in White Center and get them for 30-40% less. But for the super deli, the outstanding beer, cheese & baked goods selection, the knowledgeable & honest wine lady, the smiling service (people remember you here), it doesn't get any better. One of the nicer grocery stores in West Seattle, epic beer selection, awesome produce section, shortest wait times up front, nice staff for the most part, and overall highest prices. I would say you probably pay more for the great service and great selection here. Safeway, QFC, and Target are all cheaper options overall. read more

It's alright, the deli food isn't that great but they always have specialty bottled drinks i want without me ever having to special order AND it's on the way to school- so it can't really be beat when it comes to that sort of thing. i have had trouble getting checked out in the mornings though, they have a line formed fast and always seem a touch sarcastic. read more

Great products-a liiiittle more expensive than most places, but it's worth the better quality. If you do shop around, there are a lot of good deals on various things and it's possible to make it out without spending too much.
