I have shopped West Elm a bit over the years in various locations. I was pretty early to a concert at belly up and remembered I had a gift certificate so I decided to take a look. Upon walking in I saw two staff members talking to each other. I wandered the entire store and not once did anyone acknowledge me. Pretty surprising since there was only one other customer in the store. Another customer came in, and had to find a sales person to help her with her purchase. The other customer I saw also had to track down a sales person to ask a question. I wasn't in there very long and I saw a few things that I really liked. Some prices were reasonable and some were pretty expensive. Just depends on what you were looking for. I will probably look online to use that gift certificate unless I want to see the item in person first. It shouldn't be difficult to get help in a store or at the very least be acknowledged. read more

If Mean Girls all worked together, it would be here. I had no idea the other reviews on yelp would be similar to mine - such dismissive and poor customer service. I came in on New Year's Day to return some pillows. I didn't have my receipt, only the original tags and my credit card statement which I completely understand is a hassle. I was willing to accept store credit, a reduced refund, etc. You may as well have thought I was robbing the store - the manager was called over and never looked me in the eye, demanded my drivers license and thrust a gift card in my hand and walked away. I still wanted to buy another item and I looked to the two women at the front desk who were chatting away and said "excuse me, please?". They literally looked at each other and said "Is she talking to us?" so I could hear. I felt invisible and unimportant. When they finally decided to look at me, they said no the items I wanted weren't at the store and didn't offer to help order them or check other locations. I couldn't leave fast enough. read more

I've shopped West Elm for about 20 years and I'm disappointed by the Solana Beach location. I've visited three times and each time the staff have come across as uninterested and inconvenienced when I asked questions or needed assistance. It wasn't one isolated interaction, it felt consistent across different employees. I have had 2 horrendous experiences in a row, that you should be aware of: FIRST: As a local Solana Beach resident, I walked in spontaneously while walking my dogs. I ended up making a large purchase of home items (a few thousand dollars). They held the purchased items for me, so that I could return with my car. When I did so, asking the older lady at the front desk for my held order....She was Alarmingly and Needlessly Rude, Passive Aggressive, and Blatantly Annoyed to be bothered. She made 3 trips to the back to retrieve my order of 3 large boxes, plopped them hard on the desk and curtly turned on her heel without saying a word, leaving me to lug 3 heavy boxes to my car - in 3 separate trips. Any DECENT establishment would help the customer to his/her car. Nope. Not at West Elm, Solana Beach. - - TODAY (SECOND): I went in to fully stock our 2 newly remodeled kitchens, plural (a Main kitchen, and back kitchen). As you can imagine, that would have been a nice sale for them....Nope. I asked an older lady with glasses behind the register for help finding silverware, cups, etc for 2 kitchens. If looks could kill... She stared at me coldly, paused, and waved at numerous walls saying "They're all over the store." Then went back to whatever 'important' task she thought she was doing. I WALKED OUT and ORDERED FROM WILLIAMS SONOMA, DESPITE BEING AT WEST ELM, ONLY 1 BLOCK FROM OUR HOME. I WILL NEVER return to West Elm in Solana Beach. I will tell every neighbor not to go. I will ask YOU not to go. They should NOT be in business. That staff is horrible, rude and should be terminated immediately. If that location wants to survive in Solana Beach - a staff overhaul is imperative. The reputation is already poor, it's only a matter of time before they close down. read more

Upon entering the store to complete a return initiated online, Eddie bounded out from the rear and proceeded to yell across the store in order to scold me, in front of all customers and staff. Everyone turned to see what he was yelling about. He inquired whether I was the individual responsible for submitting an incomplete return and emphasized the importance of avoiding such errors in the future. Unfortunately, I was unable to provide an explanation, as he was excessively focused on reprimanding me in a loud manner. The attendant assisting me attempted to redirect the conversation, but Eddie abruptly interrupted and scolded her on proper procedure. Understood, but it was highly inappropriate and confrontational. The situation was highly uncomfortable and unpleasant for everyone. Next time, feel free to kindly explain your need for a certain process and be kind and professional. I'll go elsewhere in the future. Eddie's manager had little interest in addressing Eddie. Rather, she stated she would coach the entire staff. Coach Eddie. The rest of your staff is great. read more

I've been shopping online because I didn't think there were any brick and mortar stores near me, so imagine my surprise when I stumbled into this store while shopping on Cedros Ave! I love all the modern designs as well as the mid-century modern furniture pieces. The cushions, lighting, tableware, sculptures, etc. are beautifully displayed and I much prefer the experience of shopping in the store when selecting home furnishings. Everyone was very friendly and helpful in answering all my questions or suggesting some new arrivals. Prices seemed reasonable to me for the items I looked into. I will definitely come back to shop when I have more time. read more

I purchased a $200+ planter online for pickup today at the Solana Beach location. While inside the store, I experienced some of the worst customer service ever. I was told, "we'll bring the planter right out on a dolly". I waited and waited.... finally after several minutes (10+) I noticed a planter sitting outside. No one came and said, here's your planter or thanks for the order we've set your planter outside. I asked another associate to confirm the item sitting outside was indeed my planter and was told, "yes sorry she (first associate) must have gotten busy. Oh, and btw our policy is that we don't help load it. It's very heavy." Awesome! If this is the policy - post it clearly online!!! Send me a message with my online pickup notification. Had I known they do not assist with loading anything I would have brought a friend. A kind lady saw me struggling & she helped load the planter into my SUV. We immediately noticed the planter was damaged. Neat. Complete and total waste of my time today. Do not buy outdoor furniture from them. They do not stand behind their products. Bought some nice dining chairs and the wood on one cracked and they would not send anyone out to repair. Now I noticed that one of the back pieces of cording broke. The woodplanks on the dining table are beginning to bow. Poor quality imported products. Terrible customer service from the very beginning. I just don't get this store. I have walked in on 2 separate occasions looking for a couple of items. Probably spent 15-20 minutes each time and was not greeted by a single staff person. Do they not need to sell their merchandise??? One occasion I was holding an item and separately lifted a small end table off of the wall to look at. Again, no one asked if I needed assistance. I walked out empty handed. I placed an online order for pick up and was greeted on the third visit as I approached the counter. When asked if I had a large or small item for pick up, the employee was very relieved that I said small as it appeared to be less effort. It's really not worth it to return. read more

We ordered wrong table by a glitch online. West elm honored the return but not the shipping fee. We can't afford to lose out on 300$. The operator who helped us from west elm even went through the process and saw the glitch and how it went from a circle marble table... but then transitioned to a oval table when clicked on the 60 inch option. The people who delivered it just left 20 min ago and we called immediately. It is a final sale product but there has got to be something they can do. It's not that we're trying to return it and buy elsewhere. We were trying to by a different table. Still they wouldn't honor returning our shipping fee of 300$, which is ridiculous for such a big company. We are repeat customers and this is just insane. We had the best experience at West Elm! Frank showed us different samples of fabric and told us we could take them home to see what we liked for our dining room chairs. He asked to see a picture of our kitchen and after seeing our quartzite countertops, he recommended the green fabric. We were thinking about it but it made us feel very confident about purchasing that color. He gave us great design advice, and I'm so excited for them to arrive. After reading a lot of these reviews, I felt like I needed to say something, actually kind of shocked to see these reviews. I recently had a light fixture ship and arrived broken. Lahnna (sp?) was extremely helpful in returning the item, checking with another store to locate a replacement, reserving it for me, even suggested we check the shades to make sure they're not broken as well. This was all done within 5-6 mins of the store closing for the day. She was nothing but helpful, courteous and considerate of my time. Great new addition to Cedros. They have their own dedicated parking and a beautiful selection. Plus their prices are much better than many other places on the street, though of course the other places often have artisanal and unique products. Got some gorgeous throw pillows that were very inexpensive. Glad to know it's here now! PS: I am now reading all the reviews below complaining about service. That was not at all my experience today. I had a ton of people offering to help, there was only a minute wait at the register, and the person who rang me up was very nice. If there was a problem earlier this year, it was not in evidence today! I'm really glad I did not check Yelp first, and just wandered over here after shopping at Leaping Lotus and Solo! Nightmare!! We bought a bed from them December 31st gave us delivery date of January 11 we took apart our old bed and set it outside so we can trash it. Well the bed never came. When we called they said they canceled the delivery and also said they haven't even received the bed yet. When we asked to cancel the order and refund the money they said they couldn't until they receive the bed we said fine then just deliver us the bed but give us a solid date of delivery which they did. Jan 16th at 1:30pm. Well it's 2:42 and we get a email saying they attempted to deliver the bed at 3:15 and nobody was home. 3:15!!! It's not even 3 yet what a joke. Please note that is 3 stars for this overall experience at West Elm but 5 for Michelle. My shopping experience with Michelle was excellent. Michelle promptly turned a bad experience with much time wasted and me almost walking out of store and not returning to West Elm. After a negative experience It was refreshing to have an extremely helpful, patient and resourceful person at finding correct answers instead of simply saying "no" we "don't have it, no we can't do that" like the other sales person did. My only regret was not approaching Michelle initially. People like Michelle remind you that walking into a larger store instead of a small home boutique or on-line shopping can still be enjoyable. I wonder if West Elm plans to close all stores and go on-line only. The other person pushed that heavily "just go on-line". Alas, but I am already here next to my favorite coffee shop. read more

Went in to West Elm to order some outdoor furniture and was initially asked if we needed any help by one of their associates. She answered a few questions for us, but then went back to checking out customers -totally fine because we said we were just browsing. A second sales associate came up to us about 15 min later once we had found something we liked. She was very knowledgeable of the set we liked and helped us pick out the pieces we wanted. Everything was going fine, and we were super happy and excited to have landed on some furniture. Just as we were about to talk about ordering and checking out, the first associate came up to us and told our current associate she was the first one to help us and that she was going to take over to finish the sale. Our current associate explained to her that she was helping us with our decision but, the other girl ended up passive aggressively reminding her that she was first. It made us very uncomfortable feeling like she was fighting for the sale when she really played no role in our decision like the other woman had. We also had only said maybe 10 words to the first girl, so not really sure why she thought she was entitled to our business. So whatever, that happened, it was weird, but we moved on because we still wanted the furniture. Now I am COMPLETELY understanding of the current shipping situation around the country but this sales associate , the one that butted in, SWORE to us that our furniture would ship this week. She pulled up their "employee facing inventory site" and promised us that we would have our furniture in time for Thanksgiving, which was what we were hoping (we ordered in August). We thought that was great news and went forward with the sale. Two days later I got an update on our order that 2/3 of our order wouldn't be in until January and the third wouldn't be here until May!! Had they set the expectation early on that it could take months, things happen, etc. I would have been FINE with that. It was how persistent they were that it would ship immediately that was just frustrating. I called the store to ask if they had any insight, spoke with the associate who helped us with the sale, and all she said was "whoops, this can happen, just keep checking back". Again, I think the sales associates would benefit from setting realistic expectations for their customers and not pushing unrealistic shipping in order to close sales. Ultimately just a frustrating and weird experience. Still don't have any of our furniture (again, I am fully sympathetic to covid timelines), but better communication and professionalism from this store (specifically this associate) would have made things a lot better. read more

I have been in the store on Cedros 4 times. I was the only one in the store shopping on 3 out of the 4 visits and not one sales associate asked me if I needed help or had questions. Oh my goodness. What a terrible policy on shipping out items. We ordered an outdoor table and benches, hoping to enjoy them for the summer. Estimated shipping in May. Then we find out there is a hold up on the benches and they refuse to ship the table until the benches arrive (we tried asking multiple times). It's been over 3 months now, summer is almost over (we are in August), and still nada! Tried cancelling and they want me to pay $300 for the non-existent shipping? How does that even make any sense since they haven't shipped me squat? In the meantime, they've already charged my CC for the full amount. Opening up a dispute with my CC. What's to prevent them from withholding delivery forever until I give up and eat the $300? This is fraud and I will never do business with these crooks again.
