This review is for the receptionist and check-in experience ONLY. Dr Valentine and FNP-C Laykin are both great and caring people, and I have faith that my diagnosis and course of treatment to date have been quite reasonable.
My review today focuses ONLY on my experience checking in for today's appointment...the time and date as written on the appointment card as well as sent to me via the Follow My Health patient portal.
When I checked in and started to write my name on the check-in list, the receptionist asked for my name. After checking her screen, she said I had no appointment for today. I was flummoxed, but I had not brought my appointment card as proof. She told me to sit down and wait until she could look into it further. After a while, it occured to me to log into the patient portal to see if there was a record of my appointment there. Indeed there was in the form of an email sent to me on the date of my last appointment in January, confirming the date/time/location of my next visit. I got up and showed her the email confirmation. She only read the "sent" date in the header and said "Oh, that's for your January appointment!" I said 'No! Read further down and you'll see the email was SENT in January, confirming the appointment for TODAY."
She basically blew me off, no acknowledgement that the fault was theirs and not mine, no apology, no sympathy. Throughout the interaction with her, her attitude made me feel like the idiot even after I pointed out proof of the appointment. After getting a telehealth appointment near the end of the day, I left. On the drive home, thinking about how badly I was treated made me feel worse and worse. I almost lost it, but was able to settle myself enough to continue to drive safely. She had no empathy or understanding that patients are there because they are suffering (in varying degrees) and that some are experiencing frustration and despair from long term conditions that remain unresolved.
Frustration and despair also affects a patient if the practice, for any reason, causes the patient to question whether to continue or switch doctors. I have every reason to want to continue with Valentine and Lakin. But part of the role of people at the front desk is to be a brand ambassador for the practice. I refuse to be treated like s**t and made to feel the fool by front office personnel, but I despair if that means I would have to seek out another practice.
West Coast Neurology must address the IT failure to maintain my appointment time despite it showing in the patient portal, and the exacerbating attitude of the receptionist. I noticed that when I received the confirmation of today's telehealth appointment, it came via a text from phreesia, which I believe is a separate plaform from Follow My Health. Maybe they don't talk to each other, and thus phreesia did not pick up today's in-office appointment? BTW, (I'm sure many of you have experienced this) phreesia after entering your check-in data, you have to annoyingly click through several health-related ads...HORRIBLE, what a waste of time!
As of now, I'm still fuming and a bit on the fence. We'll see how this evening's telehealth appointment goes.
I am also experiencing great anxiety and frustration in giving only 1 star, even though I explain why above, and for having to spend more than an hour composing and writing and proofing this review to keep from exploding. read more
