__The only issue here is they're always overbooked so expect a wait unless it's a small fix. Otherwise they're _extremely_ good & will find the solution to your issue no matter how impossible. George is the primary mechanic and is a diesel surgeon. I'm sorry but I don't remember the receptionist's name, Dawn?!, but she's great too. read more

George is very knowledgeable and a great mechanic, highly recommend this place for your diesel repair and maintenance

So our diesel RV on a Sprinter/Mercedes chassis broke down while driving North for the Thanksgiving holidays. We were losing power on hills, and while we made it, we knew we'd have trouble driving down to Orange County again after the long weekend. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I called up West Coast Diesel Service (George) to see if they could help. Pros: Even though they were busy and didn't really have time on their schedule to help before the holidays, they were willing to see me. They were nice, explained things well (what was going on, how long things would take, etc.). Fixed the car (temporarily patched, really) that day, so good at improvising without the right parts (they said that order the parts would take longer that we had that holiday weekend, as we wanted to leave on Sunday). Cons: The "fix" was really just a tire patch on one of our engine manifolds in the engine to keep it from losing pressure - it got us down to So. CA, but we had to have it permanently repaired as soon as we were down South. And the real fix, including the cost of the part was LESS than the patch - $200 to fix it permanently, and $220 for them to put a tire patch on it at West Coast Diesel. So while inventive, they sure charged a lot for their time/effort (the patch probably cost $5). So overall, 4 stars. read more

An experience where you feel the business should be paying you by the time your finished. Unbelievable, this company is totally the stereotypical sleazy auto mechanic. Started nice. Quoted $150-160 for a standard diesel oil change, slightly less than the dealership $180, and they're local too. Received a voicemail the service was done, and the total fee was... $310. Yup, not exaggerating. When I called, and called them out, no legitimate explanation for the 50% increase. No extra work was done different than standard dealership service for $180. I negotiated them down to $189, minus a new air filter, just to get my vehicle back and be done with these shady people. Checked the oil when I got to my vehicle , and it was dirty. Not convinced they even changes it. So at the end of the day, more money for less work, from a local business, with soooo much hassle on my end, and soooo much hustle on theirs. I really wish Yelp would come out with a negative star system. SMH read more

We bought our 2004 Chevy and after 6 months and 4 mechanics working on it cover by the warranty, we finally took the truck ourselves to this place. They figured out the issue in less than a week. No further issues. Bring your diesel truck here! read more

George really knows what he's doing! Went in for a second opinion after a costly diagnostic at a different shop. He is a very friendly, knowledgeable person who talked & explained things to me very professionally. I am female, BTW. Went in without hubby first to see if he could narrow down where engine oil was leaking. Vehicle is a Ford F250 with the 7.3 engine. For no charge, George climbed all over the engine compartment with tools, flashlight & mirror...went underneath the vehicle as well. He was able to accurately narrow down to a couple of issues which the first diagnostic never caught. Quoted me a price which was less than HALF what the other shop wanted for basically the same job. The turbo pedestal was going to have to come off and o-rings replaced along with one or two possible problems. Went back the next day with hubby so he could converse with George and get the scoop from him along with a feel for his expertise, as we are planning on some other work on this truck in the near future. It's very hard to find and honest, talented diesel technician who doesn't charge outrageous amounts of money for labor. After talking with him for about 30+ minutes, hubby was satisfied and George got the job. So it took a little longer than expected, two days in the shop. Cost a little more than expected, $200 more than estimated. ALL WELL WORTH IT! Considering the original diagnoses cost over one hundred dollars, was incorrect and was going to cost MORE THAN DOUBLE what George charged...West Coast Diesel with George at the helm did a GREAT JOB with our truck. We are happy campers and our truck is running great. We will be repeat customers and would highly recommend this shop for your diesel power needs. Just a side note...the shop is nothing fancy, no waiting room, no real parking just pull in amongst the various vehicles in the drive if your lucky enough to have a space, or street park it. George's office assistant was kind enough to give me a ride back home and picked me up when the truck was ready. Seems to be a lot of commercial/fleet type vehicles in the que, even had a road tractor (big rig) in for service. George is the man for the job! read more

I really like the shop if they don,t answer the phones I have left a message and they have got back to me. I feel Like George explains things and really knows what he is doing. I have had two Dodge rams 5.9 diesels and they both go there. Good work and they get it done right. read more

This place is a joke. Don't make an appt, they clearly don't care about their customers needs much. You make an appt and your vehicle will just sit there for multiple days untouched..... read more

Driving from Atascadero to San Jose pulling our trailer and lost our turbo boost about 80 miles into the journey. Started calling places and explaining our situation, most places wouldn't see us since it was 2pm on a Friday. Carrie was fantastic. Mentioned they were booked up but said we can stop by and she could pull a mechanic to give it a quick look to make sure we would be safe at least. We limped in there an hour later. Jaime took the first crack at it and fixed a loose clamp and cleaned things out for us, we could hear the turbo kicking in but it just wasn't building pressure. George took over and he is a master at diesels. Found a blown out and subpar hose and got it fixed. Finally we had some pressure, so George replaced the exhaust pressure sensor and we're back in business!! He stayed open an extra hour past their 4:30pm Friday closing time just to help us out and get us back on the road. They saved a weekend camping trip and they didn't have to. The truck is pulling like a champ now!! Thanks George, Jaime and Carrie!! read more

I have to say that after having a phone conversation with George, he really knows what he's doing. This isn't just any old diesel shop, they really understand Bosch injection pumps inside in and out... which is a rare thing these days. Most mechanics need to plug into a robot to "diagnose" for them, and then they throw parts at the problem. I'll be going in for a service this week, but I'm a fan already based on knowledge and friendliness over the phone. read more

My dad brought his truck here and was told the diagnostic would take three hours. We suspected bad injectors for the black smoke and possibly other issues with the truck as the engine had a loud knock. One week later and they still hadnt touched the truck. They charged him the 175 diagnostic fee. The service report didnt state any diagnostics other then the obvious truck symptoms like a hard to start, misfire. When I called and asked what tests were performed they did not have an answer. No codes nothing... Instead I was told the mechanic who worked on it was not in the country at the moment and if I wanted codes to bring the truck back in. I asked if a leak down test or compression test was performed George stated he would have to charge more for that test. I was really irritated as I began to unravel the fact that no tests were actually performed and they charged there diagnostic fee. George agreed to refund my dad his money its a shame Im having to do this review I had high hopes of writing good things about them but I realize they don't really want the poor mans money instead they probably would rather work on big rigs. George Im sorry but we have the money to fix the truck its a shame we could not get an honest opinion on what the truck had but we appreciate you returning the money back as it was only right. read more

I was on a family vacation with our 5th wheel trailer and 400 miles from home. The trailer was in the campground and we were driving around when my truck broke down. I called a few places and felt most comfortable with West Coast Diesel. They told me they were two weeks out from being able to work on my truck. I told them I was on vacation and in bad situation. They took care of my repair within 6 hours of receiving my truck from the tow company. They could have charged me a premium due to prioritizing me over their other work but they didn't. West Coast Diesel really helped me out. I can't say enough good about them. read more
