I was not going to lift all three boxes of water to put in the check out area. Since employees are hired to stand around and watch what you do, why can't they check out the groceries.

I can say, without hyperbole, that 70% of the time I shop here, the system screws up and I have to have an employee override it. Despite the fact that I'm on Yelp complaining about a self checkout system, I'm not a senior citizen so this is not "new technology" to me. No matter what I do to try and avoid this, more often than not I have to call someone over to fix it every time I check out. They are regularly out of basic items like vegetables. It doesn't matter what day of the week or time of day you go in, I have found empty shelves. If you have the time, just drive to the Safeway in Damascus. Far more options, rarely are the shelves unstocked, and the self checkout doesn't make me want to rip my hair out.

The self checkout employee was actually standing over the place where you stack the baskets, and watched me drop one of the bags while attempting to return the basket. Never said anything, or offered to help. 2. Was dressed down by an employee at self checkout, because apparently I wasn't scanning correctly. I had a few heavy items, and there are no scanning guns available, so you have to lift the items to scan them. Once I scanned them, I put them down where the groceries go, but the alarm would go off. The self check employee begrudgingly cleared the alarm, but not before checking item by item through my bags to make sure I did not steal anything. After that he told me I needed to scan and lift the items up to a certain level for the alarm to not go off. Quite a difficult process, that maybe I should train at. 3. Giant allows you to donate after your purchase up to the whole dollar. Every month it is a different cause. Sometimes I donate, and sometimes not. One month the donations were for USO, a service for military members away from home. Anyways I could over hear an employee talking to other workers, about how if people knew what the USO did they would never donate. He then went on to mention his disdain for the military. Every one is entitled to an opinion, but not as a worker in front of customers. Other Giants I have been to seem good, and never had any issues. I never take the time to leave bad reviews because all places are going to have bad days, and maybe an employee was just having a bad one as well, but this happens almost every time I go to this store. Unfortunately it is the closest store to where I live, but will try to avoid it as much as possible in the future.

It reminds me of my childhood grocery shopping experiences with my Mom. The aisles are wide, brightly lit, and airy. There is always someone stocking who gladly lends a hand or just shoots the breeze with you. The produce and bakery sections are neat and clean. The meat and seafood counter is a throwback to the old grocery stores where you aren't afraid to ask for a specific cut. The cashier's are often local high school youth at their first job. Even the belts in the store are the older style. Now, as much as I love the old school vibe, they are up on their stuff. They have all of the trendy new grocery store items. You can shop in store, you can pick up pre-ordered groceries, or you can get your things via Instacart. I typically pick up or use Instacart. I like using Instacart because they are one of the few stores that do not hike up their prices when you opt for pick up or Instacart. I literally took off a star because they no longer have that yummy Biscoff ice cream bar that I love. No one does though!

I needed to find some Chesapeake Channa to make updated Baltimore Coddies for a tasting event. (IYKYK, hon). The Trouts were able to special order the fish for me - not easy to do because CCs are a by-product catch so not always available. Outstanding service! If you can get them you really, really should. Chesapeake Channa are an invasive species that are wreaking havoc in the Bay. The good news: they are incredibly tasty, with a firm, flakey flesh that's suitable for pan frying, roasting, poaching (and sous viding, my technique of choice for this event). Everybody raved about how great the fish was - even after I told them that Chesapeake Channa is more commonly known as "Snakehead". (Hey, it worked for Chilean Sea Bass, which used to be known as "Patagonian Toothfish"). So, thank you to Lighthouse for helping me introduce an old Baltimore dish to a new audience, and help save the Chesapeake Bay at the same time. Score!

On our first visit on a winter Wednesday, we were impressed with everything we saw. Being a self-professed seafood snob with extensive periods of my life living ( and eating) in coastal areas, we bought some fresh fish ("blue catfish" to be specific). We help the Chesapeake Bay by eating this endangered species. We also bought some homemade compound butter - they have several seasoning blends. The verdict was that the freshness was outstanding and the trimming (no bones or other waste) was perfect. And with fish, freshness is everything. The price was fair too for the area and the service was personable and helpful. (Note that the inner lining paper of the wrapper stuck to the skin too much - they should change that but I'm not deducting a star - the fish itself was that great). On return trips, we'll check the other faire (shellfish, prepared-on-premises seafood, dine-in options). For now, we are quite happy and the Lighthouse deserves more business.

Pumpkin Patch! It was the best family day out with truly…read moresomething for everyone to do. There were so many activities to keep us entertained, including a corn maze that my big kids got lost in The hayride out to the patch was a highlight, allowing us to pick our own pumpkins straight from the field. Before leaving we checked out the food vendors and tried the hot cider and the apple cider donuts. They both were amazing! We left with a wagon full of pumpkins (literally) and a little of everything from the food stand. Will def be coning back next year!

New Tradition Unlocked!!!…read more Absolutely loved our experience at Gaver Farm! Chopping down our own Christmas tree was such a fun and memorable tradition to start. The whole process was incredibly simple, and we found exactly the tree we wanted. Could not have asked for a better experience -- friendly staff, beautiful trees, and a truly festive atmosphere. We'll definitely be back next year!
