It has not even been one year since my last review of Wagner's Meat in Mt. Airy. But Greek Easter comes when it comes so I made the trek out there to get my Easter lamb! I would never think of getting lamb anywhere else. I called up over a week ago, spoke with Roland, and ordered a nice young lamb's leg for my Easter feast. Roland made it happen! And Josh confirmed that Roland had made it happen when I called before I drove the hour and a half up there to pick up that leg of lamb! Truly, everyone I have ever talked to at Wagner's is so down to earth and friendly. When I walked in yesterday, the cashier engaged me in a polite and friendly conversation about the weather and how lucky I was that the store was not too crowded right then. That never happens in any food store in Washington DC! In an age where simply finding a butcher is difficult, it is a true joy to have Wagner's in my life. In addition to a beautiful leg of lamb, I got 2 pounds of deep red ground beef, some killer looking short ribs, a healthy order of center cut pork chops and some of the best frozen veggies I could ever hope for. How do I know those frozen veggies are great? Because I have gotten them before and the flavor is like sunshine on my tongue!!! Just like fresh picked with no additives or preservatives! Wagner's is the real deal. I wish I lived closer to this store but my doctor who watches my cholesterol like a hawk is probably glad I don't. Could I find meat as high quality and fresh as I get at Wagner's? I seriously doubt it. But the selection, pricing, ability to special order and shopping experience cannot be found for love or money in and around the DC area. I highly recommend Wagner's Meats!!! read more

Wagner's is exactly what a hometown butcher shop should be! I love that they offer a truly personalized, local experience and can custom-cut hard-to-source pieces that you can't find anywhere else. They didn't blink an eye when I asked for something unique, they happily cut two Thor's Hammer beef shanks for me on the spot. The shop itself was charmingly decorated with local Americana for the 4th, and the lady at the register was so fun to talk to! The quality of their fresh, local meat is outstanding and the team really knows their stuff. Highly recommend supporting this gem! read more

My last review should have really been placed on the meat locker side I guess, but this time we went in for the fresh butcher meat. We left with chicken (whole and cut- ask for innards if you want them, they aren't included to pad the weight), steaks (ribeye and filet), pork chops (nice thick cut), meatballs, hamburgers. So far everything has been fantastic. I wish they were closer... and honestly, I'm not sure I can go back to store bought meat. Plenty of staff to help once you figure out that it's a person to help YoU not the line at that counter. They also sell fresh/ frozen local produce and game (berries, veggies, rabbit) and carry fresh eggs as well. Very happy, I wish I had more freezer space when we made the trip. read more

The two stars are not for the quality of the meat or selection. It's for the general staff attitude and piss poor service. I asked if they had any more Cornish hens only to be told no and the employee just didn't have me for me. As I was picking out some other over priced roast, the employee was acting like they were doing me a favor selling me a roast for $45. Then someone else noticed the game hens and asked if I wanted more, so I guess they were in stock. After all this, I waited at the register for 10 minutes while employees just walked by. Fantastic. Now you don't even want to take my money. Maybe I'll just head down the road to Bullocks. read more

I ordered a tomahawk steak and they gave me a rib steak. I ordered a porterhouse and they gave me something I couldn't even identify. And finally this Christmas, I ordered a crown roast of pork. I specified 20-22 ribs, two racks tied together, with an open middle to stuff. When I get home and open up my roast, it has 14 ribs on one rack and the rest of the meat is left connected and stuffed into the middle. I have attached what they gave me, and what I had to go to another butcher and buy in order to get what I needed. Whole Foods, who charged 50¢ less a pound! I'm done with Wagner's. If they don't care enough to get order after order right, what else are they doing wrong that I can't see? I have tried to give these people chance after chance in the belief I should support a local business. But damn, hire people who can listen to the customer and have some idea of what they are doing. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Fool me three times, and on Christmas to boot, and never, ever again. read more

Went in Saturday morning at 10am. (They close at 1pm on Saturdays). Long line. Very brusk counter service. I asked for a top round roast. She said they didn't sell that. I explained what it was again, she turned on a heel and went to get a cutter. I asked my question he replied, "Which one do you want? A top or a round" I explained what I was looking for and he went and got exactly what I wanted from the back. So much for service with a smile. Then I ordered a couple of Delmonico steaks, which he pulled from the case. When I got them home I realized they were 1/2" on one side and 1" thick on the other. Wedges. The meat was tender and delicious. The service was very rude. Not going back. read more

Great selection of meats. You have never really tasted what beef, pork or sausage should taste like until you've had it from a butcher. Often the prices here rival or are better than the local grocers. The people working here are very friendly and knowledgeable about the product they are serving. After making sausage gravy for my family for breakfast this morning, I thought to myself how EVERYONE should shop at the meat locker. I can't say enough about Wagner's. I have stopped buying meat anywhere else. The staff is so helpful and takes their time explaining any questions I have. I personally recommend the cowboy cut ribeyes. They are so good that I have literally started giving them to people as gifts. I bought two racks ( that were over two feet long a piece) of St. Louis cut ribs at the suggestion of one of the staff members for a party I had. They looked beautiful and the meat tasted so good. Everyone kept asking me where I got them! I have also purchased roasts and the sirloin burgers ( which are fantastic!!) Last week, I gave my parents 4 huge pork chops and my dad said they were the best he'd ever had. You can't beat Wagner's Mt. Airy meat locker as far as quality, value and high end customer service. Wagner's Meat LLC has been serving Mount Airy "Pride Quality Meats" but beyond lack luster customer service. This meat locker that has cornered the local market, has slowly relinquished any gesture of patience or humility towards it's customer base. I suggest the management/owner invest in a Customer Relationship Management course which could increase customer satisfaction. Exp: I had the dubious honor of being short toned by McKenzie today. Her lack of patience and willingness to explain certain marinated meats made the experience, once again, subpar (terrible). Not one person in the entire store took the time to say hello or even act inviting. As I conclude, dare I say similar to that of The Soup Kitchen episode on Seinfeld, "No Meat for You!" now that I've written this review. read more

We were introduced to this place when we bought a 1/4 steer from a farmer at the MOCO county fair. The quality of the meat here is the highest one can find. I would absolutely tell you to stretch out your alligator arms and buy by the 1/4 steer (about 225 lbs) and the 1/2 hog (about 120 lbs). The prices run about $730 for a 1/4 steer and $260 for a 1/2 hog. That is a year's worth of meat. You order via a cut sheet that allows you to spec the size and style of your cuts, it comes vac sealed, frozen, labeled, all you need to do is drop it in your freezer. I'm telling you the steer came with standing rib roasts down to the best ground beef I have ever had for $3.50 a lbs, are you kidding me? Definitely don't walk in here thinking this is Wholefoods fully stocked. It is first come first serve so be early or order it in advance. Be polite and you will get the same, you are not in Montgomery County or Baltimore. When you check out grab a couple of bags of dry beef jerky, it will change your life, trust me. This is a small agriculture based business, bring cash and help them save 4% too. read more

I've been to Wagner's a few times now and after reading the reviews re: customer service, I wanted to share my review. First, this is a really, really busy place. I always have a list ready to go so I don't hold up the line. I can understand where perhaps staff might seem a bit abrupt , but they need to keep the line moving, esp on a Saturday. I've never had a problem and have always found them to be very helpful. I cooked my first prime rib last year and one of the ladies was so helpful in giving me instructions. We've had their ground beef, bacon, chicken, prime rib, and different cuts of meat for stews. Always fantastic. The prices are very competitive with the grocery stores and I love being able to support local. If you're a kind and polite customer, I highly doubt you will receive poor customer service. I've recommended this place to multiple friends and they all had great experiences. read more

We recently moved here from DC, and Wagner's meat has been one of the best finds in the area. I've only got kebab meat, ground beef, and pork so far, but I can't wait to try other products here. This place smells so clean, and everyone has been really nice. I don't know if I can ever go back to the supermarket meat after getting used to purchaing meat here. read more

Picked up a half-steer Wagner's processed. Top quality cutting and packaging. Wagner's does a great job on the custom processing side, the order matched the cut sheet perfectly. I had read the reviews, and figured since they were busy, I would either preorder or at least know what I was allowed to do and what I wanted before going in. Not bad, not great. Pros: Prices are reasonable Cons: surly customer service There are better options such as Treuth's and Boarman's. They do not know what St Louis style ribs are. They think they do, but they are either ignorant or trying to ripoff their customers. They don't trim them or remove the cartilaginous section where the rib connects to the sternum (breastbone). So you have a lot of trimming to do (and a lot of waste) if you truly want St Louis style ribs. read more

If you want great breakfast meats...this is the place to get fresh pork sausage. The meat is always seasoned so nicely. All their sausage is loose and ground up like hamburger meat. The sausage does not come close to Jimmy Dean's.....so drop that flabby Jimmy Dean's and get some real sausage from Wagner's :) read more

Good quality meat but women employee who work there are rude and impatient to explain to you anything. I agree with comments by Trevor. This was not one time incident. I have been there 5-6 times and received the same attitude. This is mostly by the women employees who work behind the counter. I would never go back there to feel myself bad. read more

We wanted Argentinian-style cut of short ribs, and they accommodated. Plus the meat was really good. Additionally, they carry sweatbreads, and we got a bunch *fresh*. They are customer-service oriented, and that is great. It is not extremely close to my house, but definitely worth driving there. This place is very good. We are now living in Arizona. If you aren't thrilled with Wagner's then you haven't lived too many other places. It is hard to find this quality of meat for the value. Every time I go back to visit family we stop in here at least two or three times. Many times I have asked for some special cuts and every time they have graciously accommodated. I am smart enough not to ask for something special or not to know exactly what I want on a Saturday morning when they have a line running out the store - that would just be rude to the other people waiting in line to ask for something special. As far as a rip off - go live in California, Arizona, Minnesota and then tell me you are getting ripped off. The very best value for money! read more

Wow, What a HORRIBLE experience, we called this place to order a specific cut of meat and was told that they had plenty of everything. Once we arrived it turned out that they were already sold out, so we either got bad information or they are liars. The rest of the story will probably indicate that the latter is true as once my wife expressed her disappointment and turned to walk away the little "PUNK" behind the counter called her a "bitch" under his breath. I was not in the immediate vicinity but when my wife told me what happened, I went to the manager, A guy named Tom who couldn't have cared less..I mean any owner that tolerates this kind of behavior from his employees is disgraceful. The sad part is that my wife and I just before walking in were talking about how nice it would be to actually stock our freezer. I wouldn't spend a dime at this place no matter what. So they might have good meats, but the personnel are an embarrassment and being in business for myself, I wouldn't tolerate this from any of my employees. In fact, this will be our sales lesson on Monday as to how to not treat customers. As for the owner, he may as well stay at the bar because he was useless and apparently afraid of his employees. I would encourage anyone to look elsewhere and certainly not allow your wife to shop there by herself or she might get the same treatment !! read more
