I'll start by saying this was my first ever visit to Weck's and was at this location. I know they've been around for years and most people I've heard mention them say the food is great. I beg to differ and will give a far more objective review. It's either that or most people don't know what good food is. My first visit was just over 2-weeks ago on a Sunday. It was really crowded and busy and most of the customers were UNM students. I guess on the first week of school that's to be expected. Even though it was really busy the service was acceptable. This review isn't directly about the service, but more on that later. On this visit the food wasn't bad or horrible but neither was it great in the sense that it lived up to any of the hype. It was more like okay and right about mediocre. I had the green chile cheese burger with onion rings. It was advertised on the menu as a half-pound burger and when it arrived it certainly looked that way. The meat lacked flavor, not from lack of being seasoned at the grill but the meat itself was bland, my best guess is that they use ground round. For a better burger they should use ground chuck. The burger came with a big portion of really, thick cut onion rings, they were cut just like they're pictured on the menu. However, the onion rings as filling as they were, were also kind of bland. In addition to salt maybe they could add seasoning/spices to the onions before they flour them or add some seasoning to the flour itself? Something needs to be done. So that's that. Truth be told you can get a much better tasting burger at Blake's or Wendy's, no joke.
My second visit was just over a week ago and was also on a Sunday. It wasn't nearly as crowded or busy. In fact by around 12noon the restaurant was starting clear out. On this visit I had the carne adovada burrito and it was NOT good. It was definitely below mediocre. If this burrito is indicative of their other Mexican style dishes then my best advice is to go to a Mexican restaurant. This burrito was really bland. Even though the portion was big that in itself is no excuse to serve something like this. Maybe it was meant to be Mexican food for people that aren't from around here and don't know any better? That's really the best thing I can say about it. I don't recommend the carne adovada burrito.
As for their service, overall it was acceptable on both visits except for one thing on the second visit. The waiter and some manager each came by the table twice and asked how our meal was. That's four times we were interrupted. I don't mind being asked once and actually expect to be asked, once. Anything beyond once and you're starting make a pest of yourself. In my opinion, baring drink refills the waitperson should only come by once to make sure every thing is fine. There's no need for a manager or subsequent service inquiries unless the customer has some issues with the food or service. This didn't happen on the first visit because I'm guessing they were just really busy.
So my overall rating is a 2-stars because I've had better. There isn't anything about this restaurant or their food that could justify a higher rating. My overall opinion is that food is okay, it's nothing to write home about. Even though I was with other people on both visits I don't see any point in trying rate their food since I didn't taste it. On both visits they said their food was fine but then they always say that unless it's really - really bad. So since they said their food was okay I'll just speculate that overall the food is okay even though the carne adovada burrito is far from okay. If I ever go there again it will only because someone else offered and is paying the bill. In closing, good, flavorful food makes the restaurant, not big, over-sized, bland portions. read more
