Technically it is a soft opening, but everything seemed comparable to the other locations. I picked up a couple of lattes with mini croissants, and all were good on par with the other Pearland Coffee Roasters locations. The croissants are a particular treat since we lack a French bakery in the area. The people behind the counter were clearly experienced in their roles and were relaxed, friendly, and competent. I have always enjoyed the vibe here when it was a Dunn Bros, and now it is brighter and more open due to the renovations and absence of coffee roaster (presumably roasted at their original location). Plenty of comfortable seating, both inside and on the patio. Much easier to get in and out of this location than the other locations. I miss Dunn Bros, but will be happy with what it has become.

I judge a place by the black cup. No sugar, no milk, no whipped cream masquerading as personality. Just coffee, exposed and unprotected. Java Owl passes that test. The roast has character. It tastes like someone cared. It does not taste like the sad, scorched sludge you get from places that treat coffee beans like evidence to be burned. And if you want something more elaborate, they have that too. The specialty drinks rotate, mutate, and show up with a kind of reckless creativity that works more often than it has any right to. Every visit seems to bring some new concoction, some fresh little act of caffeinated imagination. Late nights at the Owl are their own species of entertainment. Beer, wine, conversation, and the grand old human circus of people watching. Someone might break into "Sweet Caroline." Someone else might decide the room needs a guitar solo. You do not so much sit there as get folded into the scene. It is noisy, warm, occasionally ridiculous, and never dull. Somehow, the place manages to be both energetic and peaceful, which should be impossible and yet is not. Good coffee, good people, a little music, a little chaos, and staff who seem genuinely happy to be there. The positivity is not the forced kind. It is not laminated corporate cheer. It is real enough that you can walk in tired and walk out a little lighter. So yes, go. Go to see and be seen, sure. But more than that, go because places like this matter. She looked at me like I was an idiot and asked several questions including milk. I said I'd like some milk and some room in the cup and she berated me with many more questions that I couldn't understand. Pretty much yelling in my face for no reason. The manager/owner was right there watching it. The barista had dark hair, dyed red with a dark short sleeved shirt. She pretty much owned the place over everyone. I stood there with her talking down to me for several minutes. And that is why I won't go back. Also, I ordered a "medium Americano" and it came back after 5-10 minuktes in a cup barely larger than a dixie cup. And it was completely burned. It tasted awful. I write a bad review maybe every 3-4 years. And this was easily the worst coffee shop experience of my life. It actually ruined my morning. She did say she thinks there may be cinnamon or something else added to the chocolate muffin because there was a flavor in it that threw her off a little. The pecan cinnamon roll was pretty good. The blueberry scone, though, tasted like it had maybe been frozen too long? I'm not completely sure, but there was just something about the taste and texture that was a little off. The savory items are good, but I do think they need to work on reheating them. The chorizo empanada had really good flavor, but the outside dough was still soggy because it wasn't heated long enough. One thing I really hope First Cup considers adding is nutritional information for their menu items. On our last visit, my 15 year old son came with us and wanted to try some things. He has Type 1 Diabetes, and having nutritional information, especially carbohydrate counts, is extremely important because we have to calculate his insulin based on what he eats. The staff did not have this information available or know where to find it. I know nutritional information is not required for every business, but for families like ours, it's not just a preference. Managing Type 1 Diabetes means constantly making calculations to keep my son safe. Without accurate information, we are left guessing, and guessing with insulin can mean his blood sugar goes too high or too low. As a mom, it's hard enough managing all of the daily decisions that come with T1D. My son should be able to go out with his family, try new foods, and enjoy a normal experience without us having to wonder if we are making the right choice for his health. Having this information available would make a huge difference, not only for people with diabetes but also for customers with allergies or other dietary needs. Even with these concerns, we really do love the feel of First Cup. It's a welcoming place with a great atmosphere, and we will continue coming back. I just hope they consider improving the reheating process and adding nutritional information because those changes would make an already great place even better.
