Ah, Java Owl -- a welcome little refuge in the strip-mall sprawl and chain-coffee sameness of Clear Lake. The kind of place you stumble into expecting caffeine and leave with a small, irrational faith in humanity restored. People like to say Montrose is where Houston keeps its cool, its weird, its pulse. Maybe. But Java Owl makes a strong case that Clear Lake has been hiding a little strange magic of its own. It is bright, clean, odd in the best possible way, and alive with the feeling that something interesting might happen before you finish your cup. Now, the important part: the coffee. I judge a place by the black cup. No sugar, no milk, no whipped cream masquerading as personality. Just coffee, exposed and unprotected. Java Owl passes that test. The roast has character. It tastes like someone cared. It does not taste like the sad, scorched sludge you get from places that treat coffee beans like evidence to be burned. And if you want something more elaborate, they have that too. The specialty drinks rotate, mutate, and show up with a kind of reckless creativity that works more often than it has any right to. Every visit seems to bring some new concoction, some fresh little act of caffeinated imagination. Late nights at the Owl are their own species of entertainment. Beer, wine, conversation, and the grand old human circus of people watching. Someone might break into "Sweet Caroline." Someone else might decide the room needs a guitar solo. You do not so much sit there as get folded into the scene. It is noisy, warm, occasionally ridiculous, and never dull. Somehow, the place manages to be both energetic and peaceful, which should be impossible and yet is not. Good coffee, good people, a little music, a little chaos, and staff who seem genuinely happy to be there. The positivity is not the forced kind. It is not laminated corporate cheer. It is real enough that you can walk in tired and walk out a little lighter. So yes, go. Go to see and be seen, sure. But more than that, go because places like this matter. Java Owl is coffee, community, weirdness, and warmth in a town that could use more of all four. read more

I haven't reviewed anything in several years, but my experience at Java Owl compelled me to say something. I live in the Clear Lake area but will be working in League City this week, so I specifically wanted to find a nice coffee shop to patron or even hang out in for the next several days. The space was nice with more than enough bored games to keep any group of friends busy. There was no line, and no reason to be rushed. But the barista that took my order was immediately angry and took the stress level to a 10 for seemingly no reason. I ordered an Americano. She looked at me like I was an idiot and asked several questions including milk. I said I'd like some milk and some room in the cup and she berated me with many more questions that I couldn't understand. Pretty much yelling in my face for no reason. The manager/owner was right there watching it. The barista had dark hair, dyed red with a dark short sleeved shirt. She pretty much owned the place over everyone. I stood there with her talking down to me for several minutes. And that is why I won't go back. Also, I ordered a "medium Americano" and it came back after 5-10 minuktes in a cup barely larger than a dixie cup. And it was completely burned. It tasted awful. I write a bad review maybe every 3-4 years. And this was easily the worst coffee shop experience of my life. It actually ruined my morning. And that is why I am taking the time out of my day to write this. read more

I know it's in the burbs but it's really a good place. Lots of close parking and a huge outdoor patio. Plenty of tables were open inside too. I got the honey owl which was spot on. However my sausage sandwich was good in that the bread was soft and the egg seasoned well but the sausage was kind of off. I was looking for a coffeehouse in the Bay Area, as Houston calls its I-45 strand of suburbs outside of the Sam Houston Tollway in the direction of Galveston. A lot of these suburbs are nice bedroom communities and, with that, I knew there would be some nice coffeehouses. In looking at listings and photos, one such coffeehouse was Java Owl. I was up for this. It seemed like an indie coffeehouse with a lot of character. It also looked like they put some time and effort into making it look appealing, both inside and out. Note that finding a coffeehouse in this area that keeps late hours is not that easy. They don't stay open that late, but do open early. From the front of the shopping center, you can see the entrance to Space Center Houston! That also means that you have to drive on that racetrack of a thoroughfare named NASA Pkwy 1. Mostly, Java Owl is about coffee, but they do have a decent selection of teas. Teas are served in a teapot, from which you pour your own cups and it's what I've come to prefer. They also have baked goods. Note that, as the day wears on, their supply of baked goods diminishes. They do not have much in the way of savory items which, in my mind, pair well with coffee or tea. It's also the reason I'm holding back from 5 stars. The pricing was appropriate. The store is clean and bright. There is a capacious section of parking in the shared lot that is close to Java Owl. The service was very polite. Even the customers are very pleasant. There is a fair bit of intellectual horsepower in these suburbs and, when you combine that with H-town's freewheeling style, warm weather, and many transplants, it's the sort of ambiance you'd expect in a nicer suburban Sunbelt area. About the suburbs, their naming can be a little strange. Big chunks of the Bay Area are still in the city of Houston, while there is a patchwork of small communities with names like Nassau Bay, El Lago, Kemah, and such. This coffeehouse is in Nassau Bay. I stopped in twice and really liked it. That said, I would readily return to Java Owl and recommend it. read more

Perfect spot to get work done!! Lots of natural sunlight and tables. I ordered an iced pomberry ( a herbal tea) which they brought to me in this cute tea set up. This review is only really for the matcha. The place was nice and service was quick. I ordered an iced matcha latte with whole milk and no sweetener. The barista told me the matcha was already sweetened but they had an unsweetened ceremonial grade matcha as well, so that is what I ordered. It was about $6.50. It was decent, obviously not sweet, but it didn't have much flavor. It was less of a matcha latte and more like slightly matcha flavored milk. read more

On my first visit on a Saturday evening, the diverse crowd struck me as beautiful when I was three steps into the door. Every age, race and gender was represented in the staff and customer base. I enjoyed a gentleman playing guitar, a young man on piano, and an aunt and nephew rendition of Stand By Me done acapella. The staff were very attentive and my Americano was excellent. Stopped by here for an afternoon pick me up. This place is highly rated on yelp so we were excited. I used to hang out around the area in my younger years. Back then it was just Ca Phe Phin and a few Starbucks if you wanted coffee + a place study, so it's nice that the area has another local coffee spot. They have a decent amount of inside sitting area where you can do some work, also have a big outside area which would be nice to hang out at when the weather is nice. Today there were a lot of bugs out so we just hung out inside. As far as the real reason why we're there - the coffee. Sadly it was, as the kids would say, mid. I got a regular iced latte and my wife got the lavender latte. The lavender latte was good, but a little too sweet for my liking. The regular latte on the other hand was just ok. I'm not sure it was just a one time bad pull, but I feel like I could've made a better espresso at home. It's a nice little shop and I'm willing to give them another shot whenever I'm in the area. Java Owl is easily the best coffee shop in the area and arguably my favorite I have ever been to. The coffee is consistently great, as is the food. I highly recommend the empanadas or the cheddar and chive scone but the muffins, other parties, and sandwiches they have are all fantastic. The ambiance is still great. They have many games you can play, sometimes you'll get live music from either pianists or guitarists, and they just expanded the patio and added a covered section that is great! The staff could not be better! The line can be super long at times but because of their efficiency, it moves pretty quickly and they are all very helpful and great at what they do. John is an amazing owner and one of the nicest guys. It's a pleasure talking to him and the rest of the staff! They sell whole beans roasted by Zelie out of Sugarland and Geva....picked up some of the Java Owl Nassau Bay Coastal Espresso roasted by Geva....tried some and they get 5 stars from both of us. They had some nice t shirts, found one the right color with cool graphics and my size....very nice place and deservedly popular. We'll definitely be back for more when we're in this area. read more

Coffee is 5 stars, tea is 5 stars, snacks are 5 stars, their cortado specifically is incredibly strong, but still gets 5 stars. I've been to this location multiple times and have nothing but grand things to say about them. No matter is you're a couch person, egg-chair person, maybe you prefer outside seating, well guess what? They have it all! The service I receive is always 5 stars! From the cashiers, to the drink runners, to the manager (I'm actually not sure if I've encountered the manager, I'm just assuming) the customer service at this location is A+++. Everyone is pretty knowledgeable about the different drink options which is perfect if you're a beginner coffee drinker. Overall, I would and do recommend visiting this place at least twice. read more

This place is quite peculiar. The customer service here is typical of the type of places of business who are not used to seeing or servicing people of color. So of course when I walked in no greeting. The esthetic of the place gives failed attempt at a hipster, beachy, Hawaiian vibe? There was a talkie somewhat unkempt person at the front who I deduced to be the owner... The barista or whatever is taking the order of the person in front of me they have a lot of questions and apparently have now bonded over the fact that they both have lineage from Washington state...so I've been waiting a bit. Another patron enters and it appears she's been there before. The person who I believe to be the owner burst with excitement as he begins relishing in her feedback pertaining to a particular drink that she ordered on a previous visit. After that he proceeds to take her order and start making her drink meanwhile I've been standing here for 5 mins or longer... There is no sign of a menu so not until the patron from Washington leaves the counter do I see the menu. I quickly scan I was on my way to work and ask for a Americano. Apparently they make two different kinds of Americanos? I couldn't exactly make out what the cashier was saying. It was loud in there. I just told her I want to strong one. To my surprise what comes out is a petite little cup. Lool Anyway the espresso was not bad, pretty robust and not acidic. So this place is a NO for me. Finally a great coffee shop on this trip. This place is fantastic in ever way. Wish they had more food choices though. Ambience is awesome with creative sitting places.
