Unfortunately, my experience was extremely frustrating and left me with a damaged vehicle and significant out-of-pocket costs. I was originally told I would have my car back around 5 PM. Instead, I didn't get the car back until around 9 PM. When I picked it up, James the owner told me that the transmission fill bolt had not been properly tightened. During first test drive. and transmission fluid leaked out, he explained and then I got car back but I was also missing the transmission dipstick And had no idea. I drove approximately 40 miles home before realizing there was a serious problem. I ultimately had to have the vehicle towed back using my own AAA coverage. When I brought the car back, the missing dipstick was initially discounted as being the cause of the problem. I was then given an explanation involving another bolt that, according to the shop, had apparently been overlooked. My concern was that if that bolt had actually been loose and allowing transmission fluid to escape, there should have been evidence of that fluid loss at the time. When I picked up the vehicle that night, there was also a liquor bottle sitting next to the computer in the work area. I cannot say whether anyone had been drinking, so I'm not going to make that accusation, but given that my vehicle was being worked on and was returned several hours later than promised, it was concerning to see. Ultimately, I was only given $150 back. I was left with a transmission that had experienced problems after the installation, additional expenses, and the responsibility of getting the vehicle back to a condition I could trust. My biggest issue is that when something went wrong with work performed on my vehicle, I expected the shop to take responsibility and make it right. I don't feel that happened here. I'm posting this review because I want other owners and anyone considering a transmission replacement or for James to work on there car to know exactly what happened in my experience. I strongly recommend documenting everything, asking questions about the work performed, and thoroughly inspecting the vehicle before leaving the shop.

I booked this appointment two days in advance for 1:30 pm wheel alignment had & dropped my car off early at 12:36 pm in case they could start sooner without expectations. From 1 pm till 2:47pm car sat in the parking lot untouched. Around 2 pm someone came over to offer coffee n' water & said thanks for your patience, we've had a tough day, but gave me no timeline. Whenn't even started yet, that I finally went to ask how much longer I was told the it alone takes about an hour, so I was looking at another hour on top of the two I'd already waited and hour from the appointment time. When I raised my concern, the front desk staff told me the appointment time isn't when service starts, it's just your drop-off time. That's not stated anywhere on their website or when booking. After more than two hours with no proactive updates I chose to leave & book with another shop. To the shop: this would've been a completely different experience if someone had simply told me up front that you were running behind & given me the choice to wait or reschedule. I would have rescheduled if that option had been offered honestly & early. Please train your team to flag delays proactively & add a note when booking that appointment times are drop-off windows. That one change would fix everything that went wrong here.

I have continued to use Oakmont Service Center exclusively since January 2020. They are courteous,…read morereliable, competent and honest. Excellent in all respects. Most recently, for various reasons, I felt that I probably needed a new battery (or alternator!), but they indicated that both were fine. Also, I mentioned that my car (a second vehicle) probably needed an oil change. After checking, they stated "Nope, good for another 3000 miles." It would have been easy to take advantage, but they did not. I happily paid the $45 inspection and testing fee. Look, if you need a solid business to maintain your car, I don't think that you can do better. Two thumbs up and five stars all the way.

Oakmont Service Center - A Referral That Fell Short…read moreReferrals are the backbone of any reputable business, especially in the world of classic cars. I own a 1949 Chevy, and like many classic car owners, I rely heavily on trusted recommendations. Skilled mechanics who truly understand vintage vehicles are rare in our area, especially since the retirement of one of the most respected classic specialists Eugene has ever had. Oakmont Service Center came recommended by a respected transmission expert, and my first interaction with Jerremy, the manager, was positive. My initial visit--radiator exchange, exhaust leak repair, and a minor carburetor adjustment--went smoothly, and meeting the two mechanics who handle classics gave me confidence in the referral. That confidence didn't last. A Breakdown and a Missed Diagnosis During a casual weekend drive, my Chevy wouldn't start after a coffee stop. After checking the usual suspects with no luck, I called Jerremy. The car was towed in, and it took two days before Eric looked at it. Because I'd had a starter issue in the past, he removed and reinstalled the starter without performing a full diagnostic. A professional approach would have been to verify the actual cause rather than rely on history. The real issue was the distributor. I chose to upgrade to an electronic module and coil. Eric removed the distributor and sent it to a shop in Cottage Grove for the upgrade. When it returned, I made it clear--in front of Eric, Jerremy, and Mike (the owner)--that if there were any questions, they should call the builder directly. No call was ever made. Critical Steps Missed The builder later informed me that Oakmont suggested they "needed to get into the engine," which was unnecessary and incorrect. The distributor had been installed improperly, and a firewall-mounted module was still running six volts--something any experienced classic mechanic would have caught immediately. The car would never have started without correcting that. To suggest engine work without completing basic diagnostic steps was a bad call. Lack of Accountability When I stopped by to speak with Mike about the missed steps, he was "too busy" to talk. Jerremy took my number, but no one followed up. When I reached out again, I was offered a $100 refund--an acknowledgment that mistakes were made, but not a meaningful resolution. I was also disappointed to walk in and see Eric working on my classic without a fender mat. That alone speaks volumes about attention to detail and respect for the vehicle. A Referral That Didn't Hold Up This referral fell short. As another reviewer, Von Sellz, pointed out--we don't all have dash cams to monitor what happens behind the shop doors. Some shops, like Joe's Garage, take thorough check-in photos and run a professional, accountable operation. They've been doing it right since 1952. Oakmont Service Center had an opportunity to live up to their reputation and the trust placed in them through referrals. Instead, they missed critical steps, failed to communicate, and didn't take ownership of their mistakes.

The guys at Absolute Air looked at my car right away and found not only a faulty air compressor but several other issues with the A/C as well. If I had just replaced the compressor it would have died in a matter of weeks and I'd be right back where I started. They worked really hard to call around and find the right parts at a discount and ended up repairing multiple parts of the unit for $1,600. They answered all of my questions and walked me through what each part would cost and what could happen if I didn't replace it so I felt that I had options. They were fine with me doing just a few things and didn't pressure me to fix everything (thought that's what I ended up going with). Very helpful, professional, and did a great job on my car. I will go to them for ANY A/C needs in the future.

I was told their pressure testing would do that, and I authorized the work based on their diagnosis. Only afterward did they discover a cracked engine block. I later found a manufacturer service bulletin addressing this exact known problem. The shop admitted they hadn't checked it and argued they shouldn't be expected to. When I challenged the diagnosis and asked for time to consider my options, I was told they would begin charging me $267 per day in storage fees, effectively forcing me to make an immediate decision. I don't expect perfection. I do expect competent research, clear communication about the limitations of diagnostic testing, and accountability when something major is missed. I received none of those things here. I deeply regret trusting their diagnosis and would not bring another vehicle to this shop.
