Forget Starbucks! I love Canada's Waves Coffee House. I stumbled upon this cafe by accident after picking up their wi-fi signal on my iphone. I'm glad I did because I ended up going inside and ordering something. The Belgian Hot Chocolate was heavenly and the Pizza Pretzel was simply delicious. Sweet and Salty and....Oh, forget it! The female manager is VERY rude and inconsiderate. Last month, I wanted to use the washroom the last minute (actually 3 or 4 mins before it was closed) she just didn't allow me to use it no matter how I begged her. I was like how hard it is to clean the washroom after I use it? Or am I going to place a boom in the washroom or something? I bought a cup of coffee so I had the right to use your washroom, right??? Today I visited this coffee shop again. I was planning to buy a medium latte but before I was able to order something, this female manager immediately told me it was gonna close in 30 mins. So I was like, okay... maybe she has some cleaning to do so I should not bother her. So I didn't buy anything and sit somewhere by the window to work on my paper. Waves on No.3 is THE coffee shop to go to when you're trying to cram for an exam or meet up with your group to finish up a last-minute project. Unfortunately, I am not in school anymore so I guess this doesn't really apply to me does it? Haha anyways their drinks are pretty decent and I really liked their strawberry frappe. Their frappe drinks are made with liquid ice cream, which is pretty much like how Blenz makes their "chillos". Anyways, it's pretty clean here and their staff are pretty nice. As long as you buy something every few hours, they'll be fine with you staying there. They close pretty late (10pm?) and open pretty early (6am?) and the location is pretty decent with a relatively spacious seating area compared to Starbucks. read more

Food and coffee here is run of the mill. Nothing special. Nothing to write home about. One has to wonder how this place makes any money! This has probably became my go-to coffee shop in Richmond as I work there. I always get the Mocha frappe, preferring milk chocolate with an ice-cream base and no whip cream and it doesn't disappoint every time. I tried their banana bread which was quite good too. The only drink I didn't enjoy was the Cookie frappe, although, it might be just preferences as it was too bitter for my liking. Otherwise, it was okay. If you are a fan of frappes, go on a Friday as it is only half a prize (SUMMER TIME ONLY). The staff is accommodating. Upon entering the premises, you are usually greeted with a warm smile. Pretty stable wifi, always loved the vibe in here. Maybe, I should step out of comfort zone and try other items on the menu. But I am definitely an avid customer of this cafe. read more

Pros: 1. Layout. Really nice layout. Ample plugs, great comfortable seats, and even a conference room that you may reserve for groups. 2. Their baristas are great and courteous to the general public. 3. Washrooms are password protected--4400 for the guys'--and they're incredibly neat and well-maintained. This place is a significant improvement over the sole 24-hr coffee shop in the area (Blenz). Their prices are slightly cheaper and they're better lit and designed. Unfortunately, the location has yet to offer 24hr service but I heard that it may be in the works. Cons: 1. The high bar-chairs aren't very ergonomic and can get uncomfortable if you're short and settle in for a few hours. 2. Overpriced snacks. But that's normal for a high-end coffee shop. Overall, I like this place! Decent Americano if u don't care about germs. First, I had to repeat my order to two different employees because I guess it's called a "canadiano" at waves. Then I noticed them make my espresso. They banged the coffee grounds out of the strainer attachment on the side of a garbage can which I can only assume is bacteria filled as I saw an empty milk jug over flowing it. Then to make it worse, the emplouee grabs the cup she's going to fill and serve me with her fingers inside my cup. Gross! I also love their Canadianas (the Wave's version of the Americano) as well as their Blue Mountain dark roasts. Perfect way to start the work shift. Likes: $2 medium lattes, location, space, service, outlets Dislikes: can be a tad pricey for other drinks Background: I went here on a Monday afternoon (3 pm) and stayed for two hours, in hopes to write an essay. The coffee shop was not busy, and people went in and out. I brought my laptop with the intention to get something done! Did I? Read on. My Experience: I called ahead to make sure that they had an outlet. Tim Horton's on Bridgeport for example, does not have any. How is a student to study with a laptop? HOW?! This Waves is new, and is located under London Drugs on No. 3 and Westminster Why. They have a garage for parking. Otherwise, it is very transit accessible as it is located in downtown Richmond. It's right between Lansdowne and Richmond Centre. I was a bit hesitant with their drink prices, which seemed pricier than Starbucks. The drinks selection was very similar to Blenz (across the street). I chose to go with their special, $2 latte plus 60 cents for a flavoured shot; I went with hazelnut. Duh. I appreciated how they practice latte art; my drink was topped with a leaf! The latte was not too hot, and they really fill it to the top of the cup. The medium latte lasted me my whole stay, so I had a very cheap stay, I suppose. The hazelnut latte was a bit on the bitter side, and I could barely taste the flavour. However, the baristas were friendly to their customers, and they greeted everyone who entered the coffee shop. They also put value in cleaning as I never saw a dirty table; they went ahead and cleaned every table after a guest left. I was listening to music the whole time, so I am not sure how "loud" it got. The shop was filled with business people on a meeting, and other students; typical of a coffee shop. The place is very central, so it's a good place to meet at in Richmond. It's not in a "sketchy" neighbourhood, so feel free to visit and stay until they close. They are open from 6 am until 12 am. No passwords needed to use their wifi. However, they use a code for their washroom, so make sure to ask the barista. I also appreciate how they have a meeting room good for about 6 people. However, you have to sign up for the room ahead of time (or not, if it's empty). Verdict: I got my essay done, so I think for me it was just a pleasant place for me to write and focus on my readings. Of all the coffee chains I think Waves fit my taste buds best. I like their frappes better than starbuck's and the chillo's at blenz. Their service is a bit quicker (despite always being full) and no long lines. I don't come often even though they are on no 3 rd. It's less convenient compared to blenz or starbucks locations in my opinions. Also they don't do much promotions to lure customers in. However I did see the advertisement of the matcha affogato when I was on Commercial and decided to drop by to try it out. There are no size options and costs $3.89. Believe it's a small with a scoop or two of Chapman's ice cream with a shot of matcha poured on top. I guess if you break down the costs, you can simply do this at home for cheaper price. PS. Good study spot if you're into studying at coffee shops. It's more quiet and less distractions compared to the other two. read more

My parents and I had just picked up Taiwanese pastries in Richmond and since it was early afternoon, we decided to skip our traditional chai at Himalayan in Vancouver and get coffee at Waves. The service was prompt and polite, and the prices were average. There is a conference room that community members may book in advance. There is ample seating, and people are encouraged to settle in with a book, chat with a friend, or work on their laptops here. The noise level is akin to Starbucks, but I would say the seating here is more comfortable. There is only one barista on duty at a time, but they're talented. The foam on a fellow customer's cappuccino was on-point and the brewed coffee was strong.I like that the coffee is ground to-order, and that they use ceramic mugs for in-house orders. read more

They need to do whatever it takes to fix their internet issue. I got a Chai Latter and southwest chicken chipotle which was ok. These guys are great. Excellent service, excellent food, and a good cuppa tea. It's a little more expensive than Starbucks but that's ok, the tea is better anyway. Yay! I am really pretty excited to see that Waves Coffee opened on No. 3 Rd. In my mind, there isn't a better place to hang out, use the free wifi and have a cup of coffee while watching people walk by. I am not the biggest fan of their coffee, but their desserts are delicious and you can't have something like that without a cup of coffee. So, I relent. The atmosphere is fantastic, I feel pretty positive when I am here. Oh and they have free parking in the garage behind....perfect. The place is just across the street and down a ways to the Bridgeport skytrain station and right down No. 3 from Richmond Centre. I will be hanging out here more. read more

My experience today was one of the worst. I arrived around 2:30pm and ordered a white matcha latte. After about 30 minutes, I finished my drink and threw the empty cup away. Not even 10 minutes later, while I was working on my own things on my computer (as any other person would when they are at a coffee house), the manager (a man in his 40s wearing a white/blue striped shirt) came and told me that I must order a drink to stay here and work at the shop. I told him that I did order a white mocha latte but I had just finished it. He asked me how long ago did I order and I said 30 minutes. Then he said, and I quote, "well as you can see there are people coming in right now and we can't just let this coffee shop be your study place, so maybe you could order another drink." There were plenty of other empty seats open and everyone else in the shop was studying as well. After I purchased my drink so that I could stay, he went on to basically ask every customer who had an empty drink or no drink on their table to do the same. I understand that I should purchase a drink every few hours because I am using their space, but to force me to either buy a drink right after I finished the previous one or leave is not the way to go. The drinks are pretty decent and the two baristas are very nice, but I was definitely not happy about the way this manager is treating the customers, and I do not recommend coming here if he is present at the store. read more

Good location and decent hours. It'd be great if they were open late after ten but they don't. Good for students. Not enough outlets to charge your laptop. Overall not bad. I would have given it three stars if my croissant was fresh. they toasted it but it was still cold and dry in the middle. so dry I really had to make an effort to cut through the pastry and I didn't even cut through it. I was surprised when they gave me a knife and fork since it was only a croissant but I guess they knew it was probably two days old for that croissant to be as dry as drywall. read more

Very rarely do I receive bad customer service. I am thinking back and honestly can not remember when I got that angry/annoyed with staff, and wanted to speak with the manager. Needless to say I received very poor customer service here 2 times, and 3rd when I wasn't even there...let me explain. Incident 1* Girl 1 (G1) takes my order in a bitchy tone for no apparent reason. It goes on the screen for Girl 2 (G2) to make it. I go to the bathroom, the drink should be made by the time I come out, because this is what good coffee houses do! So G2 didn't even start making it. Then while I stand there in front of her, she starts. Then she uses 2% milk, instead of what I designate, I had to tell her that it was wrong, because she didn't notice otherwise...then brushed it off like she knew. Then she uses the wrong tea bag because G1 didn't specify on the screen that I ordered that. Then after all of this, it's made shitty, but whatever I leave because I got my drink literally 15 minutes after I order. I can deal with this maybe on one occasion seemingly as G2 was new, but not anymore from the same person. Incident 2* I come again, it's the same combo of G1 and G2 working. So I am not oblivious to peoples signals, like some may be. When I walked in G1 signaled to G2 with her hands, and her mouth saying like look that look it's that girl. And G1 gave G2 this look. How rude. Anyways I order the same drink, G1 wasn't being that bitchy today. G2 makes it, and tries to make small talk when I could care less. Then I taste it, and it didn't have enough vanilla. I bring this up to G1, and she got so annoyed, like I am not asking you to solve a organic chem problem, am I? She almost grabs the cup out of my hand to put more vanilla in it, but seeming as its such a issue, I just leave. Incident 3* Probably the worst experience out of the 3, and I wasn't even there! So my sister goes in for me one day, and gets the same drink. G1 took the order, and then says to my sister (with a immense amount of attitude) as my sister was describing it, "Are you sure you don't want it with soy milk." Then my sister tells G1, "What's with the attitude." G1 says, "Well there is this girl, this girl who comes in everyday....no every other day to get the same drink." My sister says, "You mean my sister," in a firm tone. G1 shouts her little fucking mouth. Seriously, what if I came in every single in the morning (which I don't) to get my drink for the train to uni, or like many people--for work. A lot of people at a lot of different establishments go in for the same beverage, and its their "usual"...and while those establishments remember your order and make it before you even order, here they obviously ridicule it. Also while G2 was making another drink prior to mine, my sister witnessed both of them talking about their plans for the weekend and the like, in a loud, obnoxious tone...this is something you should clearly do in front of customers eh! Also she witnessed something that shouldn't be tolerated at all. G2 was making a drink, and she used the wrong ingredients that the customer specified. When G2 gave the customer the drink, she said to G1 after, "I don't think they'll notice." Uhmmmmm what if they're not like me, who don't ask after the drink is made if it has the right milk or whatever, and they put their trust in you, to make their drink correctly. What if they the customers had a life-threatening allergy, then what would happen you idiot, you would be liable. Seriously I was shocked. I don't go out of my way to make employees lives hell, but here it was needed. I got in contact with the manager and I told him everything that happened, he was very appreciative, and said action would be taken. A few weeks after being in contact with the manager, I saw new, much friendlier employees working. I still saw G1 working but not G2, wonder what happened... Its quite interesting what people will do without authority because all of this happened without the manager prevalent. read more

Coffee was a bit strong for me but the cream/milk, stirsticks, and sugar were self serve so you can add as much or as little as you like.
