This is a must-visit spot every time I come to BC! The special flavor this time was strawberry -- very fragrant, but a bit too sweet for my taste. I ordered the matcha and strawberry mix, but the strawberry ended up overpowering the matcha flavor. Still, it's always a place I look forward to visiting!
As a big matcha fan I was excited to try out the matcha soft serve of this shop. It opens at 1pm and it offers matcha / hojicha soft serve and other matcha drinks. The matcha soft serve shows a dark green matcha color and has an intense matcha flavour. Customers can ask to dust additional matcha or hojicha powder on top of the soft serve. I never tried it with the matcha powder so I give it a try. To me, the matcha powder does not enhance the experience but did the contrary. The matcha soft serve is too intense matcha but not enough sweetness so the bitter taste becomes too prominent to my liking. I do not feel it's worth the effort to come from downtown to have the matcha soft serve here.
Ambiance: 3/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 4/5 My friend and I were craving matcha so we came here on a weekday. We both ordered the kids size matcha soft serve and chose to get Hojicha powder on it. While I wouldn't say it's the best matcha soft serve I've ever had, it was pretty good! Definitely on the less sweet side which is good if you don't have too big of a sweet tooth, but the matcha didn't taste bitter at all. I also appreciated that they gave us kids sizes since it was the perfect portion size! My one disappointment was that when we were waiting in line and we saw others order iced matchas, they had these pre-made in jugs in the fridge which isn't ideal for matcha so I would maybe stay away from the iced drinks.
Visited here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with all the different types of matcha desserts here. Small sitting space. I got the birthday free ice cream cone and you can choose the type of matcha and also have it mixed with their daily(?) special which was mango that time. Ice cream was really smooth and the matcha flavor was nice. The size they give looks smaller than people's photos so they probably have a birthday size. Would come back to try their parfait.
Matcha maiko is my favorite place to get matcha dessert items. This time, first time I got Birthday freebie and got Matcha mango soft serve! It was interesting combination, that mango flavor was a bit stronger than matcha flavor. It was a great treat and will revisit to get new items !

I'd been meaning to try this place for a while and saw they had a banana float specifically for their birthday. I tried that along with their soft serve. It was pretty busy during the promotion but service was prompt and I got both items fairly quickly. Both items weren't too sweet and I especially liked the creaminess of the soft serve. The banana latte tasted very natural and having had several banana matchas in May, this was a solid option but not my top pick -- 4.5 stars overall.
Stopped in for a pick me up before our two-hour drive to Whistler. It was a Thursday just before 2 and we had just beat the rush because a few groups came in just after us. I had the hojicha iced latte, which was perfect. I didn't want anything with too much caffeine. The roasted flavor was very nice. Hubby had the matcha latte float, which was also very good - but I wasn't in an ice-creamy mood. I wish we had something as delicious and reasonably priced in NYC!
Matcha Cafe Maiko is a place I've already frequented numerous times throughout the years and is the place I frequent when I'm craving matcha desserts. I find their quality never misses and they have a large variety of ice cream type drinks/parfaits/desserts etc. The matcha and hojicha are strong enough and not too sweet (although still not comparable to the numerous levels of matcha you can choose from Japan!) When you order ice cream, you can choose a powder topping and I always love the kinako soybean for additional flavour and deliciousness. Their location is a bit hard to park at (only street parking) but still well worth a visit. There is minimal seating available as well inside but normally on a nice sunny day, it's always nice to eat outside anyways. Service is always fantastic, thank you Matcha Maiko!!
Since my first review 2 yrs ago, I have visited other places that server matcha soft serve. And I found myself always come here for it every time I visit Richmond, BC. The flavor is intense. The price is reasonable. Comparing to other places, I could say it has the best bang for your buck here. Flavor/taste: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Tips: stick with single matcha flavor. Don't mix! read more
I got my free birthday soft serve but honestly, i think they're getting smaller and smaller each year. It used to be quite a decent size that I was actually quite impressed. In today's world, I don't blame them that everything is shrinking in portion, especially when it's free . They didn't have the flavor of the month so it was only matcha or vanilla. My toddler wanted to eat too so we had to stick to vanilla. They also offered complementary powder: a choice of matcha, hojicha or kinako (roasted soy bean). I picked the kinako for my toddlers sake. I haven't bought a soft serve in a few year so I'm not sure whether purchased soft serves have shrunk in size as well. read more
Was taking a walk around the area and stumbled upon this place - located right by a little park, so I would assume they will get very busy during the warm months. Service was very quick, and cashier was super friendly and was giving off positive vibes. Just got my standard Oat milk Hojicha latte, which is my normal first drink at new place (when offered) - They have lots of sweet treats available - so might need to pay them another visit in the future. In terms of the drink itself, it was slightly more bitter then I'm used to. And remember to mix your drink well, as it was pretty clumpy and wasn't whisked very well - hoping that it was a one off. read more

Went for my friend's FREE birthday cone! The menu is more on the expensive side but given the quality, I think it's worth it. The service was quick and the staff was very nice. Both were a big portion enough to share with a friend but you can definitely finish on your own. My friend rates try cone 10/10 and says the yuzu mix was the perfect addition to the matcha. My parfait was great - 10/10 as well. I'm a big fan of the mochi balls. The place is clean and has cute Japanese decor. We went at around 2pm and there were 2 other groups there, thus there wasn't much seating. With that being said, everything can be grab and go and is made very quickly. Definitely will come back for my birthday :) read more

This might be my favorite matcha that I've tried. It's super creamy and rich. Tastes like good quality matcha. Their soft serve is also the best I've had for a matcha soft serve. VISIT THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE IN CANADA!!! read more
Still love this place for some solid matcha soft serve. Recently visited Matcha Cafe Maiko to try out the special flavour (ube) for the ice cream festival. It was the perfect summer treat, but you gotta to eat it quick! And was happy there is an option to make it a twist with the matcha flavor. Matcha flavour was bold and ube was just enough to not overpower the matcha flavour. read more

I love matcha products, so the matcha soft serve is my favourite dessert at this matcha cafe. The flavour of the matcha soft serve was about right. Not too sweet and not too bitter. The soft serve was thick and smooth. Its portion was generate. I was very full after eating it and very satisfied. The servers at the counter were very polite. One person took the order and the other one provided the soft serve to me right away. They were quite efficient. There are some seating areas if customers want to stay and enjoy the desserts but it gets very full easily. I would highly recommend this cafe to anyone who loves desserts. If you don't like matcha or hojicha, you can still choose other flavours such as black sesame and vanilla. I love all of them. read more
I was so excited to pick up my pre ordered matcha cakes. When I got there there was a long line and you had to line up even if you preordered. Which kinda sucked. The place is small and not many seating. The matcha cakes were good but not as good as I thought it would be... maybe I was expecting too much but the matcha tasted bland. Or maybe I was comparing it too much to matcha from Japan in Japan. It just tasted bland. read more

I love how they have kuromitsu kinako on the menu. It reminded me of Tsujiri and that is one of my favorite drinks. I had the iced matcha kuromitsu kinako and it hit the spot. My friends had the lemon matcha which they could barely taste the lemon. Maybe skip that? Others had the matcha soft serve and float and they looked good. Real matcha powder flavor and very intense. Service was great too. They gave me a bottle of water when I asked for water. Wow! The place is really small. Most stood around with their drinks or went outside. There were 6 of us and a smaller group of 3 kindly let us shared their table. That's the largest table. The other two tables could only fit 2-3 people. The washroom is located outside but within the building. read more
Quaint Japanese style matcha dessert place behind Richmond Public Market. Parking is available on the side streets. The place is quite wide but shallow. There are maybe only 20 seats inside. The theme is matcha green. Go figure. The goods are Japanese, but the staff clearly are Chinese. Just something worth mentioning. I had the matcha lemon. Quite refreshing I must say. They didn't skimp out on the matcha, and the lemon added a nice kick. Only thing is that this place closes somewhat early. But I would gladly come back. Recommended. read more

Came here on the weekend and the tables were all full, but we managed to share one with a kind gentleman. We ordered the matcha parfait with matcha/vanilla swirl, which comes with cake, cornflakes and azuki paste. This was probably the best matcha soft serve I've had in the lower mainland - the vanilla complements the matcha perfectly. The matcha flavour is perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness for my tastebuds. Next time we come back (and there will definitely be a next time) I just might have to get a full cone of the soft serve! read more
It's on the pricey side, but having their soft serve is worth it! It definitely feels like an ultra premium product and so I can understand the price. The mouth feel is super smooth, doesn't feel like there are a lot of gums or stabilizers added in. Conversely, it does melt fast on a hot summer day - so eat fast! They have their staple matcha flavour, but i've seen a rotation of vanilla and strawberry that you can get on its own or to swirl with the matcha read more

Matcha maiko never disappoints! I always get the parfait cause it's such a nice mix of everything. I got the swirl this time because I figured my one year old would want to have some and I didn't want him having caffeine. The soft serve here is not too sweet compared to other ice cream joints so I'm happy to share with they baby :) read more

Got the matcha soft serve. I like that their cone is served warm and fresh. The matcha soft serve itself was matcha enough but kind of icy. Not creamy and milky enough for my liking. I personally think that Nanas is more to my liking as they are creamier. I would stick to their drinks instead read more

I'm a sucker for "Lava" cakes so when we found ourselves in Richmond, closeby to Matcha Cafe Maiko, I seized the opportunity to try out their Matcha Lava Cake that I'd been seeing all over Instagram for quite some time. It came with the option of adding additional toppings so we chose to add some soft serve ice cream and 2 pieces of Shiratama (mochi). The Shiratama took quite some time to prepare and meanwhile, our Lava cake was sitting in front of us with soft serve ice cream next to it, that we really wanted to start eating before it started melting. So...we had no choice but to start digging in, even before the Shiratama was served to us. This was a bit of a turn off. The lava cake itself was accompanied by a strawberry sauce in addition to the soft serve ice cream that we opted for. It was all quite pricey for what it was, and honestly, it didn't quite live up to the hype. I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I'd have preferred this cake to have been a bit sweeter. The best part of the dessert was the matcha soft serve ice cream. That I recommend highly as they do make a very nice matcha ice cream and I'd happily return for the ice cream! This is back from summer when they had the uji-kintoki, a seasonal icy dessert. It was a treat from my lovely coworker who keeps raving about this place. Totally lived up to the hype!!! The matcha, condensed milk, mochi and red bean make for an extremely tasty mix, and the portion was generous for the price. It was also AMAZING as a drink after it melted. Definitely a must have every summer from now on. And that cup shape!! The perfect wide top for holding crushed ice and toppings, with the long bit to make for a handle and place to put your straw? REVOLUTIONARY. Worth a visit when summer rolls back around. read more
