    Some good fresh brewed coffee

Finally got to go to waves and I mean the most I can think to say is hey it's a coffee shop! The vibe isn't much different from a Starbucks or second cup. It definitely has more of a chain restaurant sort of feel to it, which is fine - it just falls fairly basic in comparison to other coffee shops around Edmonton. But I certainly can't complain. They have a good study space with free wifi, lots of outlets, tables etc. The price is fair and the coffee is good! I also tried their oatmeal cookie which was pleasantly un-sweet. It was also soft which I appreciate in a cookie. Refills are half the price which is also great, and it tends not to be super loud so like I said it's a great place to study and get some work done. All in all it was pretty good, and I was happy with the place. If you're in the area I would recommend!

It was sooo good! The pattern of Macchiato was cute. The correspondence of the clerk was also good. I want to come here again!

Little by little you begin to get the shakes and experience cold sweats when you're in the throes of sugar withdrawal. Eventually the headaches and irritability set in and it's all downhill from there. This was approximately the stage I was in this afternoon when I suddenly realized I hadn't had anything sugary in my system since last night. My heart hadn't been pumping fructose into my system for about 12 hours. Very poor planning on my part. (I'm just a sugar enthusiast, by the way. I'm not diabetic--yet.) Many people get disgusted (or pretend to) when they see the stats on how much sugar is actually in Coca Cola. I get excited by it. So does my dentist. $$$$$ So my friend and future Yelp elitist, Jay, suggested we go to Waves Coffee. I confess I hadn't heard of the place but any business that peddles caffeine, sugar, and chocolate is worth hitting up. They're similar to Starbucks and Second Cup in that they feature gourmet hot and cold beverages and other sweet baked tweets to nibble on. I ordered the Caramel Frappé which is basically espresso and ice cream topped with whipped cream and caramel drizzle (whatever that is). I thought it would take too long for the server to scoop out the ice cream so I asked for it with yogurt instead. By this time I was in Stage 6 of glucose withdrawal and I had no time to wait. (I hate yogurt, it's a girly man's ice cream.) I even told her to not bother with the whipped cream. Time was a-wastin'. After the server brought the drinks to our table I immediately proceeded to suck up half the Frappé (I hate that word) through my straw. The best part of sugar withdrawal is that it makes you immune to brain freeze since you're already experiencing headaches anyway. I scooped some it up with my finger and placed it between my cheek and gum and let it soak into my mucous membrane. (It absorbs into your bloodstream faster that way.) As the absorption was taking place I reclined in Waves' comfortable chair and slowly breathed in the thick coffee aroma. Best mouthgasm ever. When I was done I still kept slurping the icy remains with my straw which I'm sure echoed throughout the place. I was totally being "that guy." So Tim Hortons, Starbucks and Second Cup now have some viable competition for what gets shovelled on to my palette. The staff are friendly, if somewhat aloof, here and the atmosphere is comfortable and quiet. It's nice.

Well, there has been some anticipation for Waves to wash up on the shores of our Prairie town. And now it has. This Vancouver coffee chain now has a Wave flowing, it's as far west as you can get in Etown, it's basically in Enoch! Coffee fans that live way out in the burbs are in for a treat. However, for my metro living friends, it is not worth the drive. Yes, it is chic... the architecture is very west coast, with lots of glass and steel. Very clean, very sterile. The staff was friendly and quick, they tried to answer my questions about the place. There is a drive thru for those on the go, early morning. I had an iced latte (which is not a good judge of how good the espresso/espresso machine is) as well as a chocolate chip zucchini muffin. The muffin is where this place lost me from 4 stars to 3. It was Cisco-esque; massed produced a day or two before with oils to keep it moist. Not at all "homemade" tasting or quality. I will definitely stop in whenever I am in need of some caffination and on that part of town (because there is no other place in kilometres!) because it's not bad, just not amazing or awesome. But I am disappointed that when the Garneau area Waves finally opens, it will not be a destination.

I'd like to start by saying, I'm from out of Province. I was looking for a unique place to grab a coffee and some breakfast. Great little spot. The atmosphere and esthetics are very lovely. The roast beef sandwich was very delicious and I enjoyed my cup of coffee. If I find myself back in Edmonton, I would definitely return.

Thanks Waves for the great service!

Leduc Coffee Shop - The almost famous orange roll. $3.50 in 2024.

    Leduc Coffee Shop

I'm always up for a little journey out of town in the name of food and that's precisely what my…read morerecent visit to the city of Leduc was all about. Fifteen minutes (or so) south of the city makes Leduc feel more like a suburb and very much a part of the greater Edmonton area. It didn't take me much convincing to jump in the car when I heard that a little cafe was home to the Best Dessert 2024 as named by EDify Magazine. What delicious secrets were being kept in Leduc and how could I taste them?? Step one is to drive yourself to Leduc, which I did on a Saturday morning. While nearby, I haven't spent a whole lot of time in Leduc and found myself pleasantly surprised when the navigation took me to a quaint and cute small-town-style main street area. I really don't think that I'd ever been there before. Sweet little independent shops lined both sides of the street, lending to an idyllic pedestrian experience. Shopping areas like these always feel good to stroll through. Leduc Coffee Shop is located within two other stores; Magpies Collection and Playing For Keeps Toys. So don't get confused when you enter into a retail space; home decor and gifts on the left and children's toys on the right. Head to the back of the store and keep going until you find yourself surrounded by bistro tables and can smell the coffee. The space is cozy and cafe-like with chocolate-coloured walls and pieces of local art as decoration. I noted that each table was adorned with a vase of fresh flowers - a lovely touch. I also noticed a very adorable China cabinet filled with antique cups and saucers. The idea is that you can choose your own teacup to use, select your tea of choice, and then sit down to enjoy! What a beautiful idea that only adds to the experience! I was surprised by how large the menu is - the whole thing is posted right on the wall and it's huge both in physical size and in terms of content. In the end, the offerings include; drinks, eats, and sweets n treats. If you're looking for visual guidance most of the food items are on display in the glass case, which is helpful. I knew that I wanted to order a coffee-based beverage - it is a coffee shop after all - and I was delighted to find a special "Winter Drinks" menu. I am someone who loves a seasonal beverage, to the point of ordering off of these types of menus almost exclusively. I just like trying new things and enjoying flavours that compliment the season. This menu included six different choices, each sounding perfectly appropriate for the winter. The Gingerbread Spiced Mocha (Espresso, white chocolate, topped with whip cream & cinnamon) stood out to me, which I ordered in the small size. The girl at the counter was pleasant and got to work on preparing our drinks and eats. The drink looked like everything that I wanted it to be (AKA more like dessert than coffee) but unfortunately the flavour didn't really hit the mark for me. It mostly just tasted like a mediocre, watered down cup of coffee and didn't deliver on all of the gingerbread and spice and mocha that was promised. It just seemed like this coffee was supposed to have a lot of exciting stuff going on and I felt disappointed as I sipped it. The food menu includes a whole array of sandwiches that look really appetizing - many on croissants or bagels. And each sandwich is served with a side of corn chips which is something that I can totally get behind! I would recommend taking a look in the case and choosing whatever appears the most delicious on that particular day. However, I was visiting for one item and one item only: the Orange Bun ($3.50). This is the current best dessert in the Edmonton area and I couldn't wait to try it. These golden twirly rounds are baked in-house from scratch using real butter. The orange buns are served warm and seem to be a member of the cinnamon roll family. I know that this isn't a popular opinion but I'm not much of a cinnamon roll fan (unless we're talking about the ones at Sugarbowl, in which case I love them). This, however, is not a cinnamon roll. The homemade dough is hand-stretched every morning and the freshness is evident in every bite. There's a gooey mix of orange zest and coconut within every warm layer, bringing a sweet and unique flavour all its own. I loved this comforting bun, like something that a grandma would make. The flavour of the dough itself was almost the best part because it wasn't too sweet and it held the orange and coconut together so well. An absolute delight! I totally understand why this orange bun is on the foodie radar. It's wonderful that a little cafe like this, off the beaten path, is getting some notice. The food is the highlight at Leduc Coffee Shop but it would be nice if the coffee beverages were up to the same level. Delivering every bit the cozy cafe experience, this is the type of space that you'll be happy to spend some time in.

The rolls are like cinnamon buns but with orange instead of cinnamon. For lunch two of us ordered the Chicken Chipotle Melt. They were $9.99 each which is very reasonable. They were good, but not special. We noticed a steady stream of people coming in and ordering and looking for a table so this could be the most popular coffee house in Leduc. Coffee is self serve and includes refills. The cafe is located in the back of another business which I think is a gift shop. There's usually lots of steet parking available and, of course, being Leduc the parking is free.

It is pleasant enough on the inside, but pretty non descript. I wouldn't come here for the atmosphere. However if you like clean open concept this may be a place for you. Our server was friendly and helpful, giving her reccomendations. Menu is diverse with many things to try. But not so many that you are overwhelmed. We decided to split a few things. The Korean Schnitzel - Pork Tenderloin, Asian Slaw, Sweet & Sour Sauce, and Peanuts The Saganaki with Honey, Walnuts, and Lemon and the Happy Burger with Gruyere, Bacon Jam, Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato Food came out in a timely manner. Everything was good, but not standoutish that I would run here again. For sure the best bang for your buck was the korean schnitzel. The thing was massive. It was pleasant. Loved the peanuts and slaw that came with it. The saganaki was tasty. The burger which came highly recommended, was decent but by far, not "one of the best burgers" in Edmonton (That was quoted to us.) I much perfer the one at The Next Act. However it was yummy. If you are in the area it is worth checking out. However I wouldn't drive across the town to come here.

They appeared on the scene last year at a time when opening a new restaurant might have been viewed as an outlandish idea. But with the people behind other such beloved favourites as Red Ox Inn and Canteen at the helm it could be assumed that they had a pretty good idea of what they were doing. In a short amount of time (less than a year!) Happy & Olive has been named Favourite New Restaurant 2023 in the Edmonton Journal and Best New Restaurant 2024 in EDify Magazine. And they're not wrong! Located in Crestwood (in Crestwood Centre to be exact - lots of great businesses there and easy parking!) you'll find a fresh little spot on the corner, a restaurant that is still all bright eyed and esthetically beautiful. The decor isn't over the top; just nice finishes, a combination of various types of seating, a central bar area, and an approachable atmosphere. It feels like a down to earth space while maintaining clean lines and modern sensibilities. The patio is also very lovely and I was happy to grab a table out there on a warm July evening. I found our server to be helpful, friendly, and happy to offer some guidance as needed. Once settled in, I began to peruse the beverage menu and was pleased to find a rather good non-alcoholic cocktail portion of the menu, a trend that is really nice to see on more and more menus. I enjoy a boozy beverage as much as the next gal but sometimes I'm just not in the mood. On this occasion the list of five libation-free drinks were very welcome and I was glad to order The Gabby (Fresh mint, lemon, sugar water, bitters - $7.00). However, I will say that if you want to stay right on the olive theme it would be a great idea to order The Olive cocktail along with an order of Warm Olives - live your best olive dreams! Absolute perfection on a hot day! Not only was this beverage sweet and also tart, it was incredibly refreshing. The mint and lemon really made the drink feel like something quintessential to sip on in the summertime. A perfectly ideal patio choice! I enjoyed the way that Happy & Olive breaks down their menu. Do you want something "crispy?" (Um, yes. Everyone does.) There's also "this & that" or how about most people's favourite; "bread things." Or maybe you just need the "hungry" part of the menu. I did find that I required a bit of clarification on whether the plates were meant to be shared and it turned out that a communal dining style was the main intention. Armed with this information we set about ordering a whole bunch of plates that caught our attention with the plan for us all to try a bit of everything. (I love doing this with my family because we all enjoy eating the same foods. I don't like it as much when I go out with friends because, in some cases, tastes can vary quite a lot.) I'd heard a lot of excited buzz about the Fries (Rosemary, Parmesan, garlic oil, lemon aioli - $9.00) so clearly those were a must! Just when I thought that I knew everything that a french fry could be... I was served these. And wow, they are something special. Ultra crispy and likely double fried, the sprinkling of rosemary and parm really added a punch of unexpected flavour. The true surprise, however, was the lemon aioli, which was an absolute delight. I'm not sure that I've ever tasted anything quite like it! Creamy and fresh, this simple dipping sauce brought a whole brunch of bright acidity. It's always nice when a dish lives up to expectations and these fries certainly did. I had also heard that Happy & Olive had a latke menu at some point?? This wasn't the case on my visit but I love a latke and I'm super curious about what this entailed. Next up were the Crab Cakes (Remoulade, fennel celery slaw - $22.00) which I sometimes find can be hit or miss but I loved the sounds of these ones and had to give them a try. Positively golden on the outside, cutting into these crispy cakes revealed a luscious interior. Like a crab flavour bomb, I was met with actual crab meat and a satisfying mix of textures. I also loved the crunchy and refreshing slaw. I find fennel to be a completely underrated vegetable and it's one of my favourites. I always order it when I spot it on a menu! This dish completely nailed it for me and I think that it was the biggest winner of the night in my opinion. As mentioned previously, the Warm Olives (Marinated Happy style - $9.00) just seem like something that you should probably order at a restaurant called Happy & Olive... I wasn't sure what "Happy style" meant but I was excited to find out! I loved the variation of types and stunning colours, like little jewels. I'm not sure why this was surprising (it says "warm" right on the menu) but these really were very warm! The oil that they were bathed in was hot, even. Grabbing a piping olive and tossing it into my mouth was a satisfying experience. I also loved how aromatic they were with the use of rosema

Oh. Em. Squeal!!!!!…read more First off, mad props to my friend for introducing me to this charming new addition to the coffee scene. Stop Gap opened just under a month ago in Oliver. They describe themselves as a temporary (stop gap) means to filling a need - coffee - served with an intentional and caring heart. Caleb Kam, the owner, is warm and inviting. He definitely knows his coffee. You may know him from his former life at Brown Butter Cafe. Caleb focuses on Canadian, fresh, and local! I spotted Ace and Candid today (Edmonton gems). The clientele were sweet and happy to offer up their faves! Nathan, a regular, told me Caleb is the go to for the best pour over in town. I opted for a Dirty Chai - made to perfection and my friend had a oat milk chai complete with milk art adorning the top. Both beverages were perfection. Coffee can be consumed in house complete with adorable coasters (el gato was my fave naturally, meow) or taken to go. For seating, there is a cute bench against the window front and a side room available if not booked. Caleb also had fresh donuts from Fuzion in Chinatown. My friend and I shared the cake and Cinnamon bun donut today. Sooo ridiculously good. Be sure to check Fuzion out online - they don't have a storefront so you will need to order in advance if you are looking to up your donut game at your next office meeting. I seriously can't wait to come back here again! Oh and they also have a beautiful meeting space available for rent on the main floor in case you want to bring your next staff meeting to the best coffee in town! Such a true pleasure meeting you today, Caleb! Stop Gap is exactly what YEG needs!
