Randall was quick to reply to my initial request for a quote and showed up for a walk-through of the front and back yard of our home. We chatted about some ideas I had in mind and my concerns with some drainage issues I've noticed the last two rainy seasons we've lived here. His input made it easy for me to make a decision on a solution to my drainage issue and on removing some plants that look nice but are dangerous to have near children and dogs for their toxic properties. We finally did it...ie...replaced our front yard lawn with drought tolerant plants and Randy helped make the transition smooth. The process started with discussing the grass removal, then the kind of plants and plant placement, the irrigation and groundcover. Randy has been patient in answering all my questions. He is very knowledgable about plants and what will work in our climate. He loves and knows so much about flowers, evergreen shrubs, trees. He also tried to work within my budget and made sure we finished the project in time to meet the deadline for submission of my rebate application with DWP. it was clear that Randy loves what he is doing. In spite of the heatwave at the time he did the project, he did the work himself and personally installed the drip irrigation. He was patient and cool. He gave me instructions on how often to water, how to set the timer, how to check if the plants are getting enough water. Even when the project was finished, he was reachable by phone or by email and patiently answered my questions. He came to look at the plants and checked if the drip was working properly. He also explained to me how the drip irrigation works, how and when to prune and which plants to prune. I now have a yard that I am confident will be filled with blooms come Spring and at the same time not water thirsty. My lawn that used to consume a lot of precious water is now waterwise. We moved in right before the drought hit and any plans we had to turn our dirt lot into a turf lawn went right out the dusty, dry window. We were quite lost as to how to make the house look good on our budget and be realistic about our water use. We found Randy by accident as we were attempting to figure this all out on our own. He invested a mercifully generous amount of time in talking us through our plan (turns out we didn't have as much of one as we thought) and advised us on what we needed to do to prepare- from financing to foliage. Randy kindly and patiently walked us through every step of the planning over the course of several calls and a meeting where he proved to be a genuinely kind person and staggeringly educated about horticulture. When the job-days came (and they came quickly!), he was efficient and even in the moment was still considering little improvements here and there. Along with beautiful (and, of course, drought tolerant) trees, shrubs and ground cover, he installed a drip irrigation system and tailored it to our yard, our watering capabilities and our future plans. Where we had a dust bowl we tried to not even walk through, we now have a beautiful, verdant area to entertain guests in the back, WAY more curb appeal than we had when we moved in and a system in place to maintain it all. Randy's encyclopedic knowledge of what works for watering, amount of sunlight, placement and aesthetics was more than we dared hope to find. Randy came out to help me add on to our existing irrigation system. When he arrived, he noticed that I already had an older system in place and recommended I use the existing system with a couple simple adjustments I could make by myself. He could have charged me a bunch of money to add a new one in, and I would have been ignorantly bliss with the results; instead, he was honest and kind enough to verbally walk me through the repair and save me a bunch of money. After many years of not watering during the hotter months, we finally got tired of looking at our burned up and mostly dead grass front lawn. Though we knew we wanted to change it to a water wise lawn, we had no idea where to begin.
