These guys are really good. Sean is in the top 2% of contractors I've ever used. He replaced a door frame that had been incorrectly installed by another contractor so was leaking. Sean was great to interact with - nice guy, and he really works hard to make the customer happy. His workmanship was top quality. He's an expert at everything related to doors, which means he's not going to mess it up (like my prior contractor did). He used top quality materials (without me asking) like composite frame, heavy duty hinges, actual wood instead of MDF. He was super efficient: as soon as I signed the contract, he ordered the materials; he came out a few days after he received the materials, and he did the work very efficiently. A shout-out to Sean. He exceeded my expectations, both in the quality of his workmanship and in his practical suggestions. First, there was the quality of his work repairing a "stuck" door, adding a storm door, and installing a door "roller screen." But I was even more impressed with his suggestions about other doors in the house. Some examples: when I asked him to install french doors to replace a west, weather-facing sliding door, he suggested keeping the sliding door, because it leaked less than french doors. Second, when I asked about installing french doors to an east-facing sliding door, he said it could be done but then noted that most people keep half such doors secured 99% of the time! Third, when I asked him to repair the screens to these doors, he suggested replacing the frame, too, because it was more cost effective and longer lasting. There's something about working with a craftsperson who is so honest that he persuades you to spend less money. I would recommend Washington Door Service any day. I had been having problems with my front door. It was sticking, and it was difficult to throw the deadbolt. Based on the reviews here, when I reached out to Washington Door Services, I expected to meet an experienced craftsman. Instead, I feel I got the services of a general handyman. Sean seemed intimidated by the quality of my front door (and it is a gorgeous craftsman style door). He immediately set to work without much explanation. I guess I assumed he knew what to do. He quickly drilled out larger holes on the top and bottom hinge plates to accomodate two longer screws. He shaved down a metal cross brace where the deadbolt inserts into the doorframe. He also tried shimming the upper and lower hinges, and sprayed WD40 on the wood plate at the base of the door. After various attempts, he noted that his attempted shimming was potentially making things worse. I agreed, and he took out the shims. Sean didn't have screws that matched the burnished brass finish of the existing hardware. He didn't ask me if I wanted to get screws that matched the existing hardware and that might have been used without drilling out the hinge plate to create larger holes that clearly didn't match the neatly machined holes in the existing hinge. He used a black sharpie to cover up the bright stainless steel finish of the hardware he did have. The door still stuck, and Sean told me that in his view it wasn't significant and that it would likely improve with drier conditions. I thought the deadbolt issue had been fixed as I could throw the deadbolt from the inside. He also installed a bottom seal on a door to a detached exterior office. After less than an hour and receiving $297 he left...ugggghhh... Unrelated to the work, Sean showed up with something fashioned out of stretch fabric as a face mask. With omicron raging, service people should be wearing N95s. After Sean left, I discovered that I still had to pull up on the doorknob to engage the deadbolt with my key when locking the door from the outside. I called WA Door Services and nobody got back to me. Frustrated, I reached out to Maple Leaf Locksmith, a company who'd provided me with great service in the past. Bjorn came out, and spent a short period of time examining the door from the inside, focusing on the nature of the gaps around the door. In 10 minutes Bjorn had done what Sean couldn't. By installing a shim on the lower hinge, Bjorn lifted the outside lower corner of the door and eliminated all sticking. The deadbolt functioned smoothly, whether engaged from the inside or outside. Bjorn explained his thought processes to me as he went. For example, he noted that care needed to be taken when inserting the long screw in the lower hinge, as over tightening could have pulled the lower, outer corner of the door downward, exacerbating sticking. Bjorn charged me $100. I emailed Paul, the owner of the company, describing my experience. Paul called me back and profusely apologized, noting that he felt his company was 5 star caliber. I asked Paul to reimburse me for the additional $100 I'd had to spend to remedy my problem. Paul sent me the money. I appreciated that he was willing to partially offset the shortcomings in Sean's performance. read more

Our door needed a fix and they were able to fix it, but at an unexpected price. One star for the fact that they fixed it and other stars deducted because they charged us more than $500 for one hour of labor and materials (they charged us $130 for two rollers even though Home Depot sells them for less than $10 each). This was significantly more than the quote they gave us when we chose to hire them. They also told us materials was included in the quote but when we paid, they told us materials were extra and charged us almost $250 of materials cost. They price gouge after they fix it and I would strongly not recommend them. read more

I have to rave a little bit here about Matt and Washington Door Service. We have a 100+ year old Craftsman house in Seattle and two of the doors have been worrisome from both a security perspective and from a draftiness perspective. Our other doors were fine, but with worsening crime in North Seattle, I wanted to upgrade the locks on them. Matt came out and assessed everything in a timely manner. From the minute I first encountered him, it was clear that he had a real passion about carpentry, doors, and trying to solve the problems for the customer. He recommended a variety of solutions and worked with us as we nailed down the proposal. One of the challenges that he took on was that our house was recently repainted - inside and out - and he was able to arrange to have the new doors pre-painted to match. His recommendations on locking hardware were spot-on, and the quality of the workmanship was among the best I've ever seen. He was in in the morning - exactly on time - and done by the end of the day with nary a mess to meet the eye. He was even available by cell phone to help us figure out where to get new keys made for the specialty locks. And the repair job he did on the antique hardware on one of our locks was fantastic. I can't get over how pleased I am with the service we received from Washington Door. Every individual I spoke with was professional, friendly, and knowledgable. They were prompt in getting me an estimate and they were able to do an excellent installation the next day. After attempting to install a pre-hung exterior door ourselves (hours of attempting!) and still not able to get it square, I was expecting to go through hoops to get someone to install the door correctly. The house was built in 1950's and the door we purchased we realized needed some customization to get it to fit. Matt took care of everything - installation, insulating, exterior moulding, and even fixing our strike plate - within a few hours. He also gave me tips and suggestions for care and paint touch-ups when needed. The price was definitely fair, a lot less than I was expecting to pay given the age of the house and our brick exterior. Finally, when it got so bad it took a concerted effort to brute-force open the door despite the rollers non-cooperation, I called a glass installer to ask if they did this kind of work. When they said, "No," I asked if they could recommend someone who could replace the rollers and they gave me Washington Door Service's phone number. I called and spoke to Lloyd Evans who, after I explained the problem, said he could come out the next week. Lloyd came this morning at the agreed time and I found him very personable and very knowledgable. He fixed the rollers and the minor damage I had caused by delaying the work, in short order, and the door opens and closes almost effortlessly. And his price was very reasonable. I'm hit or miss on these guys. I've had two experiences with them, the first was when our front door was bashed in and our house burglarized. Washington Door came and did an outstanding job of restoring/refinishing our door and repairing the damage caused, as well as reinforcing it against future break-in attempts. That job i'm very happy with. That was 15 months ago however, and when I recently needed some work done they were much less receptive. I contacted them via their site and we arranged a time for them to come out and give me an estimate. Then they didn't show. When i contacted them again, it was explained that there were family issues, etc. "Fine" I said, and arranged another time for an estimate. More time taken off from work. The gentleman came this time and was very nice and asked for a day or so to get the quote together. I never received that quote, and all further emails went unanswered. At one point I asked if they would simply let me know if they couldn't help us so that i could schedule with someone else. That message was similarly ignored. it's as if my meager amount of business wasn't worth their time. For that, they get a big Non-Recommendation from me. read more
