It has been just about a week since I went to Wasabi and I cannot say that it blew me away. My main problem with the restaurant is the atmosphere. All I can say is they are trying too hard and whatever hip New York City sushi scene they are trying to copy--well, they missed. For my taste, it is entirely too elegant of a place to eat sushi. More culture and less chic, please. I did not like the service either as they seemed rather pushy, bossy, and intimidating. However, the cooks were good at their craft and I enjoyed the food. The chefs seemed rather young so I would guess they were not the most experienced bunch but certainly had style. The Edamame had just the right amount of salt and spice and you will find yourself munching on it throughout your conversations. The shrimp spring rolls were nothing special but not bad either. The rolls were certainly tasty but I have to say that the portions were fairly small for the price being paid. If I were in Nyack again, I think I would venture on to another sushi restaurant. If you are into chic hipster, expensive sushi restaurants then give this place a go. read more

Came here for my boyfriends birthdays dinner and it was so amazing! The ambience was so cute, dim but good lighting. The food was great, different than a normal sushi place so be up to try new things! Also, the drinks are great! A table of four had two seaweed salads (freshest I've had, no fish rolled around in this seaweed stinking it up), vegetable goyza, dragon, rainbow, and tuna crunch rolls, and 3 "small plates" of various fresh fish. 5 drinks. Total. $216. Not bad. Hard to eat it all but so good we managed. Let me call out the "black cod. " Like flaky butter candy. Unbelievable. If you just get two things I suggest the black cod and seaweed salad for a unique experience. One complaint. Lot of saki choices, good wine choices, but very weak selection of tequila and whiskey. Disappointing experience. I have been going to Wasabi for about 10 years from NYC, either for a night out of the City or on my way back from a trip upstate. While having drinks one Saturday night at Confetti Ristorante & Vinoteca in Piermont (great spot) made a last minute reservation at Wasabi for dinner. We get there and are directed to sit at the sole table by the window in the bar area -- separate from the main dining room. The table is fine as a last resort for someone who is popping in without a reservation but not when you're going out of your way for an evening out. I told Joe, the manager cum host that we had a reservation and it turned into a debate over the "table." We were eventually seated in the main dining after an unprofessional, bordering on rude, unapologetic exchange. The quality of the meal itself was for the first time mediocre - the rolls were okay but not memorable (we left some over); calamari was soggy; and oysters were small with a bland sauce). The cost of arguing with a long term customer? We have since tried Sushi Bada in Suffern after it came highly recommended (I had never gone to another sushi restaurant in the Rockland area). Sushi Bada, by the way, was very good. And I'm finding other great restaurants now in the area. So the food was not memorable, the experience with the host was. I'd go back, of course, but I just can't say when. read more

Service and food were impeccable. Restaurant had a really nice decor. We started off with the spicy crab roll, which was to die for. We had already put in our order, but had we not...we probably would have just kept ordering rolls! They have a nice selection of rolls and am looking forward to going back and trying different ones. My husband ordered the steak teriyaki and I had the Chilean sea bass. The sea bass was seared with a nice garlicky sauce which was not too overpowering. The teriyaki was cooked perfectly and came with sweet potato fries. After tasting the mashed potato garlicky goodness the Chilean sea bass came with, my husband wished he had that as a side to his teriyaki. Wasabi is insanely over priced given its location.. Rockland County! I went there when it first opened to try it out with one of my friends. After wandering up and down Main St. looking for a comfy place to grab a drink and sit and talk, we decided to slip into the cool dark oasis that is Wasabi. The sleek and sophisticated decor creates an incredibly relaxing super-chill vibe that definitely feels more like Manhattan than Rockland County. The service was excellent and the food was high quality. The menu was fun and innovative, offering items like a strawberry salmon roll, which we had never seen before. It was yummy, by the way. Having been to almost every sushi place in the area Wasabi is one of the best (it's on par with the place in New City which I consider more traditional) Always ask for the specials, this is the most creative restaurants for new dishes. There are specials like the tuna pizza he brings out every once in a while that are outstanding. Three must have items from the menu: 1. The truffle gyoza - OMG 2. Strawberry roll - best roll ever 3. The black cod Many of the cooked main courses are not "traditional" so to speak. The chicken teriyaki is better than any I've ever had. We have brought people who do not eat "raw fish" and they agree. Also, get the mashed potatoes with it, not the rice. The service is always outstanding. I always love to eat here,,,especially since I've been coming here since it opened and the veteran employees always seem to be happy I've arrived, so I get to feel like a celebrity for 15 seconds (sometimes you just wanna go where everybody knows your name?). The decor is sleek and modern - somewhat loungy, which I like because it's not like the normal Nyack restaurants, so I feel like I actually went somewhere other than 4 blocks from my house. There's a lot of variety on the menu, so if you're with someone who doesn't eat sushi, there are options. There is a great salmon entree served with mashed pototoes, I get it everytime. The tuna martini and jalepeno tuna sashimi are also faves. The sushi rolls, especially, the daily specials, are pretty expensive to most sushi restaurants, but I think they're totally worth it. If they have the Apple Purse for dessert, go for it! I know the owner of the restaurant is the chef and he knows what he's doing. It's also convenient to be able to eat at the VERY SMALL bar if you manage to grab one of the 6 stools at the 'waiting area' (which also can totally suck if you just wanna grab a bite to eat and people are just taking up very good seats sipping their drinks while you're starving.) Sushi bombed in my opinion--I got the Ahi Tuna roll. The only things I enjoyed were the scallops, short ribs and dessert--chocolate chip cheesecake. Service bombed as well. We let our waitress know that it was our first time and there were no suggestions or real assistance in finding the gems on the menu. Sashimi salad bombed as well. I loved this restaurant!!! Loved the breeze that came through the open windows in the front and seeing the people walk in the streets. The low lighting and simplicity really made the restaurant. The food was unbelievable. I would highly recommend anyone to go there, they really have a great selection in food..especially the sushi...I was glad that I didn't miss this little hole in the wall when I visited.....gotta stop by..it is sooooo worth it. read more

I hadn't been here in years so while I was in the area yesterday I decided to have dinner and check it out. I remember never being disappointed when I'd go with my mom on our girls night out but I can't say I was really impressed this time around. It was quiet when we got there around 6 business picked up by the time we were leaving. Service wise despite our server being nice we didnt get plates until way after our wasabi shumai arrived and then when it came time to clear plates it just didn't happen. Also, there were flies it's just gross and not appetizing to have to share your food space with flies. My bf enjoyed his rolls I just went with the passion roll for $20 I was underwhelmed but it wasn't bad. I dont know that Id go out of my way to come back to town to eat here again. read more

The food and deco and service were amazing, but for two people who drink no alcohol to run over $100, before tip with dessert is just too much for me. The food is pretty and artful, but I don't feel I was getting what I paid for. This place could have been a 4, even considering that, but: For the manager to complain to me on my way out about the amount I tipped, and hand me the pad to make corrections...I nearly scratched it out and wrote "sorry, no tip". i love this place. i would have liked to give five stars because the staff is very friendly and the place is beautiful. if the waitress says 'sashimi is market price',ask exactly how much! or you could wind up paying 50 dollars for a few peices of finely sliced fatty tuna then you will get so angry you will feed it to your dog out of spite. for my wife and i usually a sushi night out might run us eighty to a hundred bucks,that includes booze:) wasabi can be reasonable but you must ask! or plan on dropping hundreds of dollars. and theres at least one waitress there that wont tell you.:) since then i have been back and its always lovely x0 -jack read more

After a long day of trying to catch something for dinner in the Hudson ocean I gave up. I can usually walk out a few feet down at memorial park and hand catch my dinner, but today the sea animals were not biting. I even tried a fishing pole ( which I am adamantly against) , but nothing. I did find a golf ball and a hair beret so it wasn't a total loss. I promised my lover sushi and I had to deliver so I decided to go to out local fishateria called WASABI ( pronounced wash-ab-eye I think). We only waited 3-4 minutes for a table which wasn't bad for a Tuesday night in Nyack. We decided to sit outdoors because my transition lenses were having trouble adjusting to the green lighting inside . My life partner insists the lighting was not green, but I'm not color blind, you can decide for yourself. Our lovely waitress came from a long line of fisherman herself so I couldn't wait to pick her brain about our local ocean creatures. But there was no time for talk because she had other tables to service. I chose the salmon in the house wasabi sauce. It didn't taste anything like cranberry pistachio salmon but it was still very tasty. I had five or six glasses of delightful white wine because my lover was going to drive the dirt bike home ( wooowhoo, I love unexpected weeknight buzzes) . My DH had some sushi on a dish shaped like a boat and though I am adamantly against fishing off boats, I still thought the gesture was darling . The salmon got stuck in my braces so I had fish breath for a week, that I could have lived without, but I don't feel it was the chefs fault because it's his job to cook the fish to a succulent perfection ( soft fish is a no no for braces. Order it blackened if you have mouth apparatus like myself). The bathroom was well stocked. I didn't run out of paper or soap which is a problem I often run into in nyack. Also the fan has an appropriate hum to it. Not to loud or soft. We were given green beans as a free starter to our meal. The waitress called them eatyourmommy beans but I think they were soy beans because I'm a world traveler. Never the less it's such a pleasant change to be offered free food as apposed to having to pay for every bit of food you order, even if you don't finish it, like most other restaurants I've dined at. In Italy and Turkey you only pay for what you eat. Americans are very greedy in that way. All in all my bill was around $200 and worth every single silver dollar! Brava Wasabi. read more

Absolutely fantastic. Walked in on a Saturday night with my guest at 945 and managed to get a table right away. The host was warm, polite and sat us at a great table in the main dining room. The decor was trendy soho style with dance/restaurant music playing....I assumed for the Saturday night ambiance. Halogen lights, mirrors and candle light. Definitely a great place for a date. We were immediately greeted by our server Mary who may have been the most charming knowledgable server I have had in long string of dining experiences. She knew the menu well, made great suggestions, and did it all with a great sense of humor and attentiveness. Food was really wonderful. I would not say it is so much strict Japanese food than Japanese Asian fusion. I ordered the pan fried shrimp dumplings in a black truffle sauce and three rolls. Very well balanced flavorful and all around delicious. The complimentary edamame for each table is a nice touch as well as the hot wet towels. Go for the food, the ambiance, Mary the wonderful server, and great lychee martinis. Will definitely be back with friends. read more

It's been awhile since I've been here, but I rather enjoyed the Manhattan vibe of Wasabi. I didn't enjoy the Manhattan prices or tiny portions though, but the food is good enough where i consider it a level below similar places in NYC. If you go, get the lobster martini. read more

came here around 6:30 on a saturday for dinner with a friend. very dark ambiance. we were promptly seated and given amazing edamame. however the edamame was taken from us at a certain point when we were not even finished.... we were asked for drinks orders and each got a diet coke. when ordering, I asked for an item I saw on the menu online but not on menu given to me. waitress was happy to arrange the dish for me anyway (grilled squid) I also ordered tuna salad, when I went to order a soup the waitress cut me off and told me I was already ordering enough food and should be good... me and my friend were so rattled- why would you ever tell someone to stop ordering (I was not asking her opinion on sizes). food came out extremely fast which was a bit odd- I was served my salad before my friends meal even came out, which bothered me. tuna was excellent though- not much of a "salad" but 4 strips of romaine. also got the grilled squid and it wasn't much "grilled" was acceptable but didn't taste very fresh- more just kind of sliced and boiled. then came the bill- charged for SIX DIET COKES. NEVER was it informed to us that refills were not free. We were infuriated - we would have just gotten water, $15 for soda fountain soda is ridiculous and seems scammy- especially when every other meal (squid rings not even tentacles included and the 4 slices of romaine with tuna were each already $16) ( The food is not cheap and portions are average. )We complained and the manager came over- she offered to remove ONE of the soda charges- we appreciate the somewhat compromise but still left with a very sour taste and negative perception. Why would you not just remove the additional fees and create a life time customer? Instead we will not return. Unfortunate. read more

Could not give it five stars because they use commercial condiments in their sauces rather than making from scratch so I had to avoid much of the menu to stay clean of MSG. I go to the mall in nyack from time to time. I never make the trip with out hitting up wasabi. This place is great. We love the yellow tail cheeks and the kobi steak. Start your meal with some sushi it is always great. The drinks are always good and the service is tops. We ask for the same server every time because even know we only get up to nyack about 5 or 6 times a year she always remembers us. Marry is the best. read more

This place was nice and very happening on a Friday night, but man their prices are a little out of control. Service was prompt but very curt. Once our server found out that we wouldn't be dropping a ton of money, she turned ice cold. Wasabi used to be great. My wife and I ate there after work this week. We ordered simple Dragon and Kamikaze rolls. There were five other tables besides us. It took over 30 minutes to be served. The rolls were limp, small and tired. The chef must have been bored that night. And it's expensive. So, bye bye Wasabi-san. It was nice knowing you. read more
