Great local sushi spot in Nyack! I'm not from the area and grabbed dinner here with a friend a few days ago, first time here for both of us. The food and drinks were good and I loved the atmosphere. The restaurant is pretty big, you walk into a bar area with a few tables and then it opens up to large round booths and tables lining the wall, across is a sushi bar with a handful of seats available. The decor has exposed brick, oversized mirrors and bamboo plants on each table. They also offer outdoor seating which is great! There appeared to be only one waitress working which was tough, but she was accommodating The food came out in a timely manner and everything was so fresh. A bowl of edamame was offered while we waited. I got two rolls, both were great, and my friend ordered an appetizer and cucumber roll. This restaurant doesn't offer sashimi which I found a little odd, and has a number of fusion dishes. Overall I am happy that we gave Wasabi a shot and will definitely be back. read more

Pro: Great sushi place in Nyack! I stumbled upon this gem while visiting some family in the area, and there was no disappointment! My party of five was promptly seated by server Jason, who was the silver medal finisher for MVP of the evening! (More on the gold medal finisher in just a second...) He was very knowledgeable in both the standard menu and the daily specials; more than that, Jason was the conduit to some nonstandard requests and the work of a talented chef! Thanks for the suggestions, extra rice, dipping sauces, and amazing attention! Bravo, Sir! So let's talk about the food... Flawless execution on the seared scallops, Sunomono & Wakame salads, Octopus Carpaccio, Wasabi Roll, and Uni nigiri! The flavors I experienced were an eerily close facsimile of the sushi I've had in both Japan and California. Without exaggeration, this was among my favorite sushi on the east coast! One of the better sushi restaurants I've been to in Westchester/Rockland area. Fish is always fresh and portions are healthy. Pricing is on par with other quality sushi restaurants. Definitely has a New York City ambience. I recommend sampling the Wakame appetizer salad whereas it is a seaweed salad adorned with pieces of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, with a spicy dressing, excellent. read more

Wazup with Wasabi? Went there for dinner during restaurant week (no longer worth the so called "discounted" price for diners) and although the sushi was fresh and tasty, there didn't seem to be any price reduction. What infuriated me and I found utterly disgraceful, was the unpleasant charge added to our bill..... I asked for green tea. The waitress then asked my husband if he too would like some, so we both agreed on green tea. "How nice " I thought when we received our own pot. Little did I know until after we left the restaurant and my husband told me, we had been charged $3.00 each for what I assumed originally would be the customary cup of green tea one is offered "on the house" in Japanese restaurants - even lower end sushi restaurants. An extra $6.00 charge was added to our bill for tea. How "fishy" is that? Because of their sly move, I will NEVER go back to Wasabi again. Generous portions and friendly staff. Most options are seafood - we both had the halibut which was soft with a nice crust and rich flavor with a sauce that was sweet but not spicy. I was able to replace he potatoes with steamed veggies. The sweet potato fries were very good. Wasabi is a solid option on the strip. read more

This is my second at this establishment. My sister and I had the King Crab Roll, Shrimp Dumplings, Short Ribs, Fried Rice and Chilean Sea Bass. For dessert we had the Chocolate Lava Cake. Came here for the first time on a Wednesday night, and wasn't sure what to expect. The ambiance was typical of that of an asian restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing! I had the truffle gyoza, strawberry sushi roll, and scallop appetizer (I eat a lot). Then I had the skirt steak special with tempura battered shrimp dumplings and sweet potato fries, which was absolutely delicious! For dessert I had BOTH the green tea cheesecake and the mochi.. There was not one bite of this meal that I didn't like.. Our waitress, Mary, was fun and pleasant and very knowledgeable about the menu. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. This is really 3.5 stars... Loved the feel of the restaurant... really modern and sexy! The food was very good! All the sauces LOOKED dark and heavy but it was just the right saltiness and not bombarding at all. The sauces were the perfect kick to every dish and i was happy with everything. The Wasabi Calamari (contrary to the name, it contains no wasabi) was delicious. Crispy calamari with a spicy chili sauce. My only complaint is that this dish was served with the sauce underneath the calamari. I wish it were served on the side so that the calamari could stay crispy. The Yellowtail Jalapeno was also very good! Light, tangy yuzu sauce was awesome and the sashimi was fresh! We also got a salad. The dressing LOOKED like too much but it was a refreshing flavor and not overwhelming at alll. I REALLLY liked my brother scallops with some kinda spicy cream sauce. It had a thai-ish influence in flavor and it was SOOOO good. He said the sauce was a little too heavy because it was really creamy. My mom and i got sushi rolls. These were good but they were rolls that you could find at any other asian fusion/modern sushi bar restaurant! However, i will say that the fish was fresh and the presentation was nice! The black rice pudding was also good! It had chunks of mango and a vanilla glaze on top! I don't know why so many Yelpers are down on Wasabi. It's the best sushi and asian place in Nyack, one of the best in Rockland County, maybe throughout the Hudson Valley. It's sophisticated, well-designed, the service is just fine, and the food is very good and diverse. I don't understand the people who complain about the prices and the "Manhattan" feel. If you live in the suburbs, you generally complain about the quality of the restaurants compared to the city, but then when someone tries to actually create a restaurant sophisticated enough for the city, they complain about putting on airs. Wasabi would fit very nicely in any neighborhood in Manhattan, where it would be a terrific neighborhood sushi spot on the order of a Haru. Not a place where people wait on line for an hour because the sushi is so great, but a place that's generally full. The sushi has always been fresh, good, and creative. The entrees have been generally very strong, and it's a great place to go when you want to splash out a bit and have a more sophisticated dining experience in the area. In my opinion, it's somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, probably a 4.5, but I'll round up for the effort of bringing some sophistication to the area. read more

Had dinner here again last night. I'm going to uphold my 3-star rating. Tried the "Summer Roll" last night, and was a bit disappointed. The description sounded interesting - I'd never had a sushi roll with pineapple in it before. A little strange and it could have worked, if not for the peanut sauce. That's right: sushi with sauce. I know what you're thinking - I have only myself to blame for ordering sushi with pineapple served atop peanut hoisin sauce - but we ordered after a round of martinis, so perhaps that explains my daring choice. And Wasabi is billed as a sushi place, right, so why not live on the edge? Here's why not: sushi should never be swimming in anything other than the ocean from whence it came. The martinis are truly not to be missed. We had the Green Tea and Coconut varieties, and they were sublime. And the black cod small plate is a consistent winner; a must-have. (Note to my Italian friends: No, this is definitely not your Nonna's baccala.) Service was okay. Our waitress took my menu after bringing our drinks, before we ordered. These guys cancel orders randomly on Seamless. This may seem like a small thing but when you've made your dinner plans and 30 min later the order is cancelled, that's an avoidable inconvenience. Restaurants can pull themselves off Seamless for the evening if they're understaffed. They can raise the minimum order, they can limit their range of delivery. read more

Having grown up in Nyack I have a resentment towards Wasabi to begin with because it was the only sushi place available in town for a while after Ichi Ricki closed down (a very sad day for me since that is where I celebrated my first day of kindergarten AND high school graduation!)...and Wasabi was BIG disappointment to me! The service was almost creepy to me, in a sort of up-your-butt kind of way (re-folding my friends' napkin & adjusting his chopsticks when he went to the bathroom, etc.). The atmosphere was way too overly-trendy-wanna-be to me, and the high prices reflected that too- ick. It was not a 'sushi place' to me at all... and I fully agree with the person who commented that "this is a place to bring your friends who don't really like sushi" But for those of you that DO- check out the other less flashy places nearby and also the 2nd Ichi Ricki right across the river! read more

So I'm tortured between an "A-Ok" and "Yay, I'm a fan". It is definitely better than "A-Ok" but I wouldn't ask for its autograph. Came here for the first time on a second date towards the end of last year. I probably won't come here again until I meet another guy willing to splurge so much on a not-very-promising-date à la myself hehe. Like everyone said it IS quite pricey, definitely one of the more bougie places in Nyack. But if you come in here already knowing that then I believe Wasabi would be a delightful time. Service & Ambiance--If I don't remember wrong it was pretty crowded that night, but service was professional, detailed and efficient, really did feel like I was in Manhattan. Decor is quite trendy and becoming especially for Nyack haha. The fat Budda and bamboos and what not are cheesy but pretty much expected anywhere I guess lol. The seats by the window look great and relaxing too. Sushi--Great sushi...not like, superb, but it is fresh and quite tasty. And it is beautifully assorted on your plate, which is really how upscale Asian cuisine should be. No complaints about the wasabi or ginger either, both were good. Well actually I think I expected a little bit more of the wasabi, perhaps I would have liked to be surprised by some authentic shooting-up-your-nostril-and-face sensation with that ol' lingering spicy grainy texture real Japanese wasabi leaves in your mouth...but alas, this is Amewica...*le shrug*. Overall still the best quality in town as far as taste and pretty much everything else goes in the category of Rockland sushi. PORTIONS however, were measly! What are we, fairies? After we finished our first plates me and my date sat and stared at each other...then I shamelessly broke the silence, "Are you um...full?" Thankfully my date's mouth quickly split into a wide smile as if he was glad I was the first to say it, he then generously ordered us a whole 'nother entree each, I definitely didn't even want to nosily glance over at the bill like I normally do after lol. I believe he got a second plate of sushi, I ordered dumplings instead. Dumplings were fine, not anything out of the ordinary. I think the fried chicken dumplings at that Asian Stir Crazy place at Palisades Mall might be better actually if that tells you anything...oh time to go write a review on them too... Alcohol-- Another great thing about this place is their full bar. My date ordered us beer, plus two cocktails that I normally wouldn't get, a martini for himself and a cosmo for me, both were surprisingly good. I usually don't like martinis but I had a taste of his and thought it was good, my cosmo was above average as well, not too sweet or tart. So yea, them drinks hit the spot. I would totally come back here for drinks and maybe light munching with my frugal sisters. The ambiance is good for drinking with your girls or even just chillin and light conversations by the bar, the place in general is much classier than their neighboring bars haha. First of all...must give Wasabi kudos for having the same Ikea lights on their bar as I have in my living room shelf....no kudos for 2 of the lights having huge cracks in it, seeing that they are literally under $10 for a set of 3. I would know. The restaurant itself has beautiful lighting and great decor. The downside to that is...I don't care. I judge a restaurant by no#1, the food alone, no#2, the cleanliness, and no#3, the friendliness....which might I add, New York alone has flunked no#3 almost every time. Not too surprising. They aren't even friendly in "Friendly's." That being said, the food was ok, standard, nothing spectacular sushi. My waiter was on top of things, but he had some sort of creeper attitude...like he was a 50 year old man in a 22 year old body. Weirdo personality. I ordered the Rock n Roll sushi that had shrimp tempura, eel, crab, avocado with tobiko and it was pretty decent. The second roll I tried kinda stunk, but what did I expect from a sushi roll that consisted of strawberry, tuna, and tobiko. My mom always taught me to eat what I order...so I ate it all nonetheless. Wasabi - Shrimp teraki - Japanese Near Me - Nyack, New York

My first time trying Wasabi and I was not blown away. Reservations seems like a definite must at Wasabi but not quite sure about a regular week night. For the price of the meals, the restaurant could be larger in size as it tries to mimic a NYC style restaurant. We ordered the Jalapeno Yellowtail w/ ponzu sauce ($15) appetizer that was really good - but for the price of 4 thin slices, it was a rip off. The Alaskan Salmon and Mango Roll were delicious but then again, $14 for a roll is unnecessary especially if you're not eating in Manhattan. I found the "mango" around the mango roll, questionable - the thin slices of mango wrapped around the roll was white...I thought mangoes were orange?!! It comes with a great horseradish dipping sauce that goes great w/ the meal. The mochi dessert we ordered was $9 (for 5)- seemed like it came from the frozen food section of the supermarket - you can buy a box for $3.50 afterward and enjoy it home. As for the service - yes, they seem a bit arrogant and pushy...seems like they were judging me with their eyes. Half the time I couldn't understand what the Vietnamese waitress was saying with her thick accent. In conclusion, the meals are very pricey for the area and probably will not come back again. A recent trip to this restaurant left me wanting more. The ambiance/decor is simple, refreshing and appropriate. The service however, leaves me wanting more. Slow service was the biggest downfall with this establishment. We arrived at opening time 1pm on a Saturday. Being the first and only table for quite some time, you would have thought that the staff would have payed a little more attention to us. This was not the case. We ordered a few small plates and apps and they arrived at the table at different times, not a big deal if the portions would have been a little more appropriate compared to the price we payed for the dishes. The food: This is a tough one, the Truffle Gyoza was amazing...until we ordered the Strawberry Roll. This little gem was the star of the show. Topped with thinly sliced strawberries, it was different from any roll I had ever eaten. At the end of the meal, we shared the tempura ice cream. Amazing too. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are not concerned about getting to an appointment on time. While the service was slow and lacking, the food was good, not great, but good. This is a Japanese place to bring your friends who don't like sushi (so that you can still get some of course. Ha!) Wasabi tries desperately to be a NYC restaurant, but with its dim lights, soft techno music, and wasabi green walls it still lacks something. The sushi menu is limited, but presentation is an A plus. They really do a good job on the other entrees and small plates. I would classify it as more of a contemporary Japanese place rather than a sushi restaurant. Its good for groups, as we have celebrated a few birthdays here. One thing to make sure you get is the wasabi calamari. Very creative. O and they also have a full bar with a variety of special martinis, such as the green tea martini and the wasabi ginger martini. Wasabi. The name itself has something exciting about it. I picture the green logo on the menu and excited whispers coming from the dimly lit dining room. This hometown treasure has always been something of a treat to visit. Locally it has it's own renown and you can often find people traveling from surrounding areas and even Manhattan to sample it's delicate and delicious fare. Last Saturday at 7:30 pm we walked in expecting a typical wait. I was greeted by a frazzled hostess who explained the restaurant was completely booked until 9:00 pm. Oddly enough about a quarter of the tables were empty. As I was conveying my skepticism another host quickly interjected and we were seated almost immediately. I'm still not sure exactly what the issue was but needless to say it started the night off on an odd note. I was ready to quickly forget the seating episode and get down to business. Enter our waitress Sad Sally emitting an unapologetic air of despondency. I don't know if she had a rough night, week or just a bad month but I am more than confident in saying she simply did not want to be there. Hey listen we all have been there, I can deal with a little dejection, in fact you can cry on my shoulder as long as my food is up to par. I did my best to lighten the mood but I think I made things worse sending our friend deeper into her pit of despair with every smile and quip I sent her way. To get things going (and boost moral) I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio, all kidding aside it might have been one of the worst glasses of wine I've ever tasted. Our friend Sad Sally was willing to exchange it for another glass but informed me the wine list did not offer another Pinot Grigio. Oddly enough after penning through the list I found two others : / awkward... Anyway my second glass was fine and it was time to eat some food. Game on! I started with a seaweed salad that was absolutely delicious. The dressing was sweet, light and refreshing with a slight zing to it. The seaweed itself was delightfully crisp. All in all a great offering, and by far the best of the night. One of the appetizer specials was a Sriracha spicy tuna dish. I had the idea of having it wrapped it in a hand roll, which I didn't anticipate to be a difficult task. After explaining my idea to Sally, and then convincing her how easy it would be to pull off she reluctantly placed my order. Unfortunately the roll itself was forgettable at best. If there was any Sriracha involved at all it did not register with my pallet. Not only was the dish it not worth the $17, it wasn't even worth the time it took to persuade this downtrodden woman to place the order for me. Finally the Dragon Roll was boring sushi at it's finest. I don't even want to bore myself by writing about it. The flavors were bland and the amount of rice around the roll would offend a sumo wrestler in training. The rest of my party was equally disappointed in their meals. Over the years this establishment has been touted as one of the premier Japanese restaurants in the area. I'd say at this point the only thing left to that legend is the name. I will say I do believer Wasabi can still deliver some high end Japanese cuisine but the sushi is tired and left a lot to be desired. I am sad to say I don't see myself coming back anytime soon. read more

I had the seaweed salad appetizer which was gloppy with a tasteless sauce, then the lobster tempura, which also had a sauce like from a jar of Russian dressing (the greens were wilted as well), and then the wasabi roll, which was uninspired. Beautiful decor and I loved the green tea martini, and the prices would be OK if the food were better. But they really need to get someone in there who has some culinary training. read more

I am a huge sushi guy and this place is where you want to go!! They are by far the best sushi place in the Rockland County area no questions asked. Their appetizers are phenomenal. must try their tuna pizza as well as their tuna millennium. Don't forget to also have the wasabi calamari and rock shrimp!! You cannot go wrong getting anything on their menu. Like I said best sushi place so don't forget the sushi. Is a bit pricy but then again if you want good food you pay good money. What a great place to come for Japanese fusion! Our friends brought us here this past Friday evening for dinner. I was so excited as I have been wanting to try this place forever. It's beautifully decorated and has a nice city vibe. There is quite a bit of seating in the main dining area, as well as the bar and the sushi bar. We sat at a round table which was so nice and spacious for four people. I ordered an Asian pear martini, which was delicious. My husband and I shared the lobster sliders, which was a special and amazing. It was served on a grilled slider bun and had the perfect seasonings. We also shared a tuna pizza which was raw tuna served on a crispy tortilla shell with avocado, tomato, and cilantro. It was so delicious. I also ordered the truffle gyoza which was off the charts incredible! The sauce was out of this world! My husband had the rainbow and dragon rolls and both looked delicious and fresh. Everything that we ordered was presented beautifully. This restaurant reminds me a little of Nobu where you can order either small plates, appetizers or entrees. I liked how there was traditional sushi, but also other items that were fusion. All of the entrees sounded good and I would probably try one next time. For dessert, we shared a green tea cheesecake which was interesting, not too sweet. We had a black rice pudding that was really good! Kim, the owner is so sweet and goes out of her way to visit each table and talk to the guests. Wasabi is a terrific place! It is located in Nyack....just 1/2 hour north from the GW bridge. The food is consistently good and inventive and the vibe is very cool and fun. Wasabi's staff is professional and friendly. Compared to other Japanese restaurants, Wasabi's contemporary spin is refreshing. Conventional offerings (ie; sushi) is exceptionally fresh and well prepared. My wife and I (and all of the many other people we know that have been there as well) would highly endorse Wasabi to anyone for a nice meal and night out. read more

This is great for a special occasion but I wouldn't go here regularly for sushi. My date and I went with another couple and splurged on some pricey dishes. Some of these included hamachi with Yuzu, chilean sea bass, and fried rock shrimp. The service is fine- knowledgeable but not particularly friendly. First there was a long black hair in the yellowtail, then a pork summer roll was so hot it burnt my lip, (they should warn you) which is blistered today and the sushi was not up to their usual standards. The sushi here is delicious and creative! I agree with the previous reviews that this is Nobu quality fish at the right price. We ordered the rock shrimp tempura, the alaskan roll, tuna pizza - they were all superb. On a previous occasion I've had the lobster martini which is also amazing. I do wonder if they have brown rice though, it did not seem like an option based on the menu. The hot sake they brought out was good, on the strong side. The ambiance here is great too - perfect for a date spot, or even just with family/friends. This is my new favorite Japanese resturant in Rockland County! I've been here a couple of times...and I haven't been disappointed yet! The cocktails are yummy!!! Was - a, bi? What's up is that this place provides a healthier alternative to the other plain-jane bar food offerings on Main Street. The three-star rating here is for the quality of the food, however, I would rate the food presentation and service four-stars. Here's why: *We dined al fresco and our waitress offered, without hesitation nor us prompting, to store our motorcycle helmets for us at the table near by. *Our waitress is a Rockland county native; we are not. She offered up a few anecdotal stories about the neighborhood and it's inhabitants: the 50 year old skateboarder/homeless person who's not homeless, the Thursday night "musical prayer" sessions (complete with a tambourine and flutist, who does not play the flute!) held at the public gazebo across the street, and the firehouse that doesn't exactly put out fires. *Our waitress was also very accommodating. She suggested a few alternatives to the menu for my vegetarian cousin and his girlfriend. She also explained that the chef would whip up anything we desired that was not on the menu (e.g. vegetable tempura - with our vegetables of choice - as a main entree). *We didn't have to wait long for anything save for a glass of water at one point during the dinner. The actual quality of the sushi is lackluster (I ordered the caterpillar roll) and the menu prices were a bit high for the neighborhood but reasonable in comparison to what you would find at a quality sushi house in NYC. BUT, last night we met friends for dinner and had a very frustrating situation happen that needs to be documented for people considering this establishment. My wife and I attempted to order a Sashimi platter/boat and ran into a roadblock. The waitress couldn't comprehend the concept of not wanting rice nor the idea of ordering off the menu. Listed on the menu was a "Sushi/Sashimi Boat" but evidently if you don't want any rice with your meal... That's a problem! It took three visited from the waitress, a chat with the maître d' who then had to speak to the "Boss" to order a plate of 'raw fish' at a Sushi Restaurant... where does such a thing happen in the world?! Not only was this embarrassing for us and our friends... but disruptive to other guest at surrounding tables who were baffled by the spectacle that was going on. No one in ear shot could believe how difficult it was to put our order in. In closing, with so many dining option in the area, I'd say that we are not going to darken Wasabi's door anytime soon. read more

Took my daughter for her birthday. Food was top notch and the service was great. My daughter loved it. She had the Rock n Roll and I had the Truffle Gyoza with a side of garlic soba. Everything was tasty and came out quickly. read more

The oysters were so delicious. The truffle Gyoza was amazing, and the tuna was superb. Wasabi martini was fantastic!!!

I really enjoyed this place. My boyfriend and I went for Valentines Day. We sat at the bar for a little while we waited to be seated. Their acai-blueberry Mojito was so amazing and delicious! I had at least 5! The food was spectacular from appetizer to dessert. It was very flavorful and plated so beautifully. I loved the decor and ambiance of the place. Customer service was great too. Our waiter checked up on us every so often. I will definitely be returning. read more

I came here last night for dinner. I was super excited since I heard great things about this place, but man was I disappointed. We started off with the miso soup, which was pretty basic. (How can you really screw up miso soup). Then we moved on to four different rolls which were Ahi Tuna, Spicy Tuna, Crunchy Salmon and the Rainbow Roll. I would have ordered other rolls, however they did not have too many options. I am used to sushi places where they have over 30 different roll options, but at Wasabi, they only had around 10 real special roll options. Second of all, the rolls really didn't taste that great. I am not sure what it was, but something about them didn't taste right. They didn't taste that fresh and they all had some type mayo in them which I really don't like. The place itself was pretty nice inside, but the food really wasn't worth it. Especially for around $15 a roll. Oh and we also order the fried ice cream, hoping that it might be a bit better than our dinner, but once again we were wrong. The tempera tasted very soggy.
