After making their hyped debut nearly 2 years ago, Wanpo Tea Shop has remained one of my favorite stops in Katy Asian Town (KAT). Their line of beverages have hit the spot in a way where I can laud them for their consistency in both customer service and selection of drinks. Their selection of drinks are broken down in milk tea, fruit tea, latte, "pure" tea, traditional, and cheese. Toppings include aiyu, grass, red bean, tapioca, pearl, and combined boba with sugar level adjustments. The standouts in each section for me are as follows: (pure) jinxuan oolong, kumquat lemon tea (fruit), winter melon lemonade (traditional), yamamasa koyamaen's matcha (latte), and their regular wanpo milk tea. If I'm feeling really indulgent, I'll get a cheese cream oreo but that's a rare occasion. They've done a good job of opening up the interior space and the layout is ideal for groups and solo action. This is likely to accommodate lines (if any) throughout the week. The illuminated tea areas is a nice decorative touch, There are some table + board games and the place is really pretty during the daytime when the natural light kicks in. WiFi is also on point. The staff is young, friendly, and mostly bilingual in Mandarin + English. Prices are the standard $5-7 per drink, and parking is always abundant in this part of KAT. Given Wanpo's Taiwanese roots and celebrated global brand, it only legitimizes (and further saturates) the greater Houston tea scene. read more

I had a very...weird experience at Wanpo. I ordered a Sugarcane Lemonade and when I tasted it, it didn't taste like Sugarcane, just straight lemon. Wanting to give Wanpo the benefit of the doubt, I asked if it could be remade because it was a $8 drink. The worker, whose name I believe is Eric, SNIFFED my drink through the straw and said that it's Sugarcane and gave it back to me.....He then said he wouldn't remake it because it smells like it...Huh..? I walked out in shock because, what? Out of all the boba spots that I have been to, never has anyone smelled my drink. In fact, I used to work at a boba shop and never has it occurred to me to smell a drink and not remake it for a customer. Like, I don't know what methods you use to confirm ingredients but you couldn't even take the drink to the back to smell it? You did it in front of my face? I don't ever ask for drinks to be remade unless it tastes nothing like I ordered, I just go about and let it be but this genuinely appalled me. Really needed this wanpo trip! Texas is really lacking in good tea shops, especially in the DFW area so my trip to houston is definitely prioritizing getting good bubble tea every day. The wanpo here tastes just as good as the ones in the bay area! The main menu is the same but their special items are kind of different. I noticed they have matcha lattes using yamamasa koyamaen matcha powder! I tried to ask a few times what blend they use but it seems like they're not too sure. Another thing was they aren't able to make the mung bean smoothie with no sugar even though the mung bean paste is already sweet, so even at the lowest sugar level it was way too sweet. This cute shop is tucked in Katy Asiatown. It's nicely decorated and the bathroom is clean, smells nice, and plays music that wouldn't go amiss in a Nordstrom restroom. However, the tables weren't really cleaned, probably because it was busy. They have plenty of tables and some games but they were all full when we went on a Sunday night. They also seem to offer cakes in the shape of clog sandals that remind me of Crocs and ice cream but I heard they were out of the cakes when we were there. We got: EARL GREY MILK TEA W/ TARO BALLS: ordered with less ice And 70% sugar. You could taste the earl grey and the milk tea seems lighter than usual (only milk as opposed to half and half/creamer?) and was good... but the taro balls seemed slightly undercooked. They were a little harder and could have been better. RED BEAN JELLY MATCHA LATTE: ordered with light ice and 50% sugar. This was my favorite. They do have red bean as well as the jellies in the matcha latte. I really liked them together and I typically don't like red beans. Unfortunately, this only came in one size (medium). Wanpo is a super classy boba shop. It's quiet and the decor is lots of wood and it feels like walking into an old teahouse. It was late in the day, so I got a brown sugar boba milk. It was okay, with nice chewy boba. But the drink overall was watered down with minimal creaminess from the milk and no strong brown sugar flavor, making it a slightly sweet milk with boba. Perhaps their tea is better because overall, it was not very sweet. May need to try their tea based drinks next time! read more

Cute tea shop with a large selection of drinks , this place can host a nice group or a solo study session. However I'd recommend you bring some noise cancelling headphones as the volume of the crowd can be excessive. There's plenty of seating but people do tend to camp out so I'd just grab and go since there are other shops and restaurants nearby in the plaza. Also fair warning their alarm system was going on and off during our visit and was very painful to hear. Understandable that it was out of their control but it made for a very uncomfortable experience. I hope they have remedied this since then but we shall see. But to get to the star of the show the tea... and let me spill the tea: I ordered the passion fruit green tea with light ice, it came as I ordered but the flavor was lack luster. Overwhelmed with passion fruit and sub par green tea, I found myself leaving this drink in my car as it didn't taste all that great. I didn't mean to update my review so soon but I feel like I have tried almost every single tea and almost every single thing on their drink menu. Here is my verdict... I love their tea drinks, specifically the teas with no or little sugar and their grass jelly are unmatched. I can truly taste the difference in quality compare to a bunch of other boba shops in Katy/Houston area. If you're a tea lover, you will enjoy Wanpo. oolong tea and their winter melon barley tea with grass jelly are my go-to drinks here with little or no sugar, depending on my mood. They have improved on how they brew it and I like a business who listens to critiques and challenge themselves to become better. Sugar Cane Jinxuan Oolong has been my go-to for the longest, but I recently started enjoying the Earl Grey Milk Tea as well! When it opened, I was eager to try a new place and impressed with more traditional decor and servers in the back. It felt like I was transported to Asia! The Sugar Cane Jinxuan Oolong with Aiyu Jelly was very refreshing as I'm a fan of sugar cane juice. The ratio was nicely balanced and not too sweet. The Earl Grey Milk Tea was mildly fragrant with a good balance of sweetness as well. Love this tea shop's ambiance and the aroma of fresh brewed tea once I step inside. The lines get quite long on the weekends but move fairly quickly. Their seats are comfy and there are many tables inside for those who want to stay to enjoy. Most times, I have taken my tea to go and even pre-order it online for pick up for efficiency. The teas have been always delicious and brewed to perfection. The majority of the menu is fully customizable and those who are looking for a low to no sugar brewed tea can really take note here, as you would be able to taste the natural tea flavor. The sweetness can of course be adjusted with options including zero percent, thirty percent, fifty percent , seventy percent, or a hundred percent. I typically enjoy my teas at thirty percent sweetness, and Wanpo does it right every time. My favorites from this tea shop are their Oolong Tieguanyin Tea, Xuanqiao Green Tea, Jinxuan Oolong (iced or hot). Yellow jelly as a topping is also a must have in my drinks, I just love the slightly soft and chewy texture almost like a mochi consistency but maybe even a tad lighter. As for milk teas at Wanpo, a few that I'd suggest to try are their Red Bean Jelly Milk Tea, Custard Matcha Milk Tea, and of course their classic Wanpo Milk Tea. Digging deeper and sampling some of their tea offerings reveals what may be the best boba shop in the Houston area right now. Menu items that standout to me are the Kumquat Lemon Tea, Aiyu Jelly Lemon Green Tea, Jasmine Green Milk Tea, Wintermelon Lemonade, and Matcha Latte. To my tastes, Wanpo uses some of the highest quality teat that I have tasted amongst boba shops. I always adjust my drinks to about 50% or less sweetness and the drinks here are never too sweet for me when this adjustment is made. It is unfortunate that I don't live closer. Every time I visit the shop has been busy, but the space is relatively large. It is a bit echo-y inside, so it can get noisy. Probably the best tasting boba I've had in Houston. The island black tea is pretty fragrant and floral, exactly how it should taste. Also, at regular sugar levels, it's not ridiculously sweet. The boba could be better, not quite as chewy, I think it might not be as fresh as some other places. My girlfriend liked her oolong. The space is quite nice, with high ceilings, lots of space between tables, and comfy seats. A fair number of folks studying there. Most of the table have easy access to outlets(!) While living in San Francisco, I visited Wanpo a dozen of times with my favorited drink as the purple rice taro milk with boba and taro balls and was really excited to have Wanpo come to Texas. During my first visit to the location in Houston, I was disappointed when they didn't have the purple rice taro like the CA locations and decided to get the tea with cheese foam. Their tea was a bit watery. The foam did have sugar on top that was bruleed and was crunchy on top, which I enjoyed. I also shared a drink with my friend that had boba, and it was flavorless and hard when I tried it. The inside was very large and spacious with lots of seating and games--great for big families or friends to gather around. The staff was also friendly. Overall, Wanpo was one of my favorite boba shops in SF, and I had really high hopes for the Katy location, but since it is newer, maybe they are still adding new drinks and flavors and working out the kinks(?) We came here on a weekday, and wanted to see what the hype was about. The decor was super aesthetic and minimal, makes you feel like you're walking into a quaint little tea shop with the frames by the register. Everyone was friendly and helped talked us through the drinks and our order. My bf got the matcha latte which tasted incredibly authentic and legit good quality matcha, he's a huge matcha lover and this was probably the best one for him -- which says a lot! It definitely proves that they don't use any powder in their drinks. I got the sugar cane jinxuan oolong, which whoever thought of mixing sugar cane with tea was a genius! For drinks I've had: Wanpo milk tea 50% sugar: I rarely drink regular milk tea at other spots but theirs is a perfect balance of milk and a strong tea taste. The taro balls are a must with it Jasmine Milk Tea 50% sugar: 4.5/5 you can taste the jasmine which is nice but not as good as the original Oolong Milk Tea 50% sugar: 4/5 the oolong is more mild but still good Passionfruit tea 70% sugar: 4/5 they use real passionfruit which is nice since most places use syrup. The drink is a little sour so I would maybe get 100% sugar next time Lemon aiyu jelly tea 70% sugar: 4.5/5 the aiyu jelly was refreshing and the tea had a nice floral flavor. Super refreshing for summer Taro balls: 5/5 I loooove their taro balls and they go well with every milk tea. They are perfectly soft Overall, I've liked pretty much every drink I've had here which is surprising to me because most of the time I only like a few drinks at other tea spots.
