I have shopped at Walmarts across the nation my entire life. It was at first a wonder to find good clean products for a reasonable price, but as I began to move, it was my only option to shop in most places. And after my most recent move I discovered this location (the biggest Walmart I have ever seen in my life). I was initially impressed with its variety of options and seriously impressed with their grocery department.
However, with that said, this was the last Walmart I will ever be shopping at because it is the straw that broke the camel's back.
It all began when our Savings catcher stopped working (The app to obtain blubird dollars by getting competitor price difference). After that we began to notice every customer service experience was becoming more and more withdrawn from communication; I would go through checkout without a single word spoken from the cashier, not "hello", not "did you find everything alright?" not even "have a nice day," nothing. And after multiple visits at a variety of Walmarts where cashiers would stop talking to me altogether, I decided to only go through self-checkout.
Self-checkout employees don't ever seem excited to be there, let alone breathing. But, I've had exceptional self-checkout service at plenty of other stores that offer it, thanks to Walmart's "ahead of the game" competitiveness. But this store is exceptionally bad in this department. I had one employee "help" me purchase beer by checking my I.D., pressing a few buttons, continue to shout at another employee to continue with an open-ended conversation right next to me, all while she never spoke to me, even when I said "thank you" for approving my I.D. Sure, she spoke while standing next to me, but not one word was uttered to me. Not "hello" or "can I see your ID?" That's concerning when you're selling alcohol, honestly.
But, I thought this was a fluke and kept shopping at this location.
It was my most recent visit, just before Christmas 2016, that pushed my shopping experience over the edge:
In an unrelated but exceptionally bad experience at the in-store Dunkin' Donuts piled on top of the extremely poor customer service throughout the visit, my wife and I have decided never to shop at Walmart again. Why?
We had a manufacturer's coupon (that you print at home) that was for buy 2 get 1 free DiGornio Pizza. A hell of a deal if I ever saw one. So, we rang in everything at self-checkout and was greeted by another employee who seemed to think "helping" us with the weight detector was to tell us to just move a bag to our cart, from over 15 feet away, while not hardly looking in our direction. Once it came to the coupon, it would not scan. We tried and tried, advised the ever-so-dull employee that it was not scanning, and she tried only once, and scoffed, marched off without any words exchanged to explain where she was going, and came back with what looked like a manager she was wearing a different colored vest, and spoke as if she knew more than the other employee). Well, this manager tried the coupon herself but it would not scan. ***insert moment where every other Walmart I have ever shopped at would simply override, type a code, and manually enter the amount for the coupon*** She then looked at my wife and myself and said "It's not scanning" (duh) "We can't accept the coupon if it doesn't scan." I said "Well, that has never been the case at every single Walmart shopping experience I have ever had in my life," her rebuttle was "I'm sorry, it's store policy." To which I responded, "But aren't you the manager?" she said "yes, but it's store policy. I can't accept a coupon if it doesn't scan." To which I realized she was so firm on this without asking a thing from myself, so I said "fine, please remove those pizzas from my purchase, because that coupon is the ONLY reason I wanted to buy them." She obliged and even removed them from my bag.
SIDENOTE: I managed to use this coupon at the Price Chopper Market 32 on Western Ave. In Guilderland just a few days later without any issue.
Why I shop at Walmart in densely populated areas is because I can shop for everything in one place. But now that I'll be commuting quite regularly between 4 major cities I don't need the convenience when I will be driving past competitors with a more worthy customer service policy. This Walmart is not worth your time, money, or stress. Retain your sanity and shop literally anywhere else. read more
