We shared a variety of items, some of which were better than others: Roasted beef sandwich - the beef was delicious, but just lukewarm Fries - definitely not hot as advertised Onion rings - soft on the outside, versus the ideal of crispy Chocolate malt - delicious! I go for two roast beefs and a side of onion rings. Put on all the fixins and you're off to the races. The onion rings are probably some of the best I've had (no slippage, you know when you bite in and the onion slips out leaving you with breading in your hand). Ambiance: Yeah, it's strange walking into the lobby of a office building and seeing this old school 50's diner type joint. Once you get past that, the interior matches what they're selling. So push past it and deal. The place is also crowded with seating and there can be a line out the door, but they're pretty good planning for the rush hours. Service: No issue as it's counter service and they deliver the food. There's some descriptors missing from the menu, but I think if you're prepared with your questions they'll happily help. I know I will be asking more about the green and red plate specials. Overall: Yes, it's good and I'm happy. Then menu is simple, hot sandwiches, sides, beverages and daily special. I opted for the classic roast beef, fries and a pop; and we also got the Blue Plate Special, which is an open roast beef sandwich, mashed potatoes and corn. Everything you've likely heard about this place is true, amazing roast beef, cooked to medium (medium-rare); not wicked salty, and enough piled on that you don't feel cheated. My sandwich came with au jus (costs $0.89), get it, worth it; I would drink it, but it would've been weird for others in the dining room. The open sandwich was solid, swimming in gravy; adds a touch of 'comfort food' feeling. Stop by and grab a roast beef, fries and a bevy, you won't be disappointed. Note - they close at 3pm read more

Stopped in for lunch during the holiday season with a few co-workers who proceeded to high-five each other because, I was told, there was no line and the line was usually out the door. I ordered the half Blue Plate special, which included half a roast beef sandwich, what tasted like boxed potatoes, and a side of corn, the latter two smothered in gravy. The roast beef was good, tender and juicy, the sides going with it well. Portions were just right for lunch and I ended up clearing my plate, though there was too much gravy so it just sat. The person taking your order and cashiering should not be the one bringing the food out to the tables so now the order line is going out the door. To me, roast beef tastes like some weird Thing, and not like its name would have you believe - in my opinion, most "roast beef" tastes nothing like the flesh of a roasted cow. As a result, I never order it. I was looking for a nice place near Edina to have lunch with my fiance, and stumbled upon the Yelp reviews for Wally's. It looked good, it was cheap, and it was close to where we needed to be to have a quick lunch during the work week. Damn. THIS is roast beef. THIS is how it should taste. If all roast beef tasted like this, I would eat roast beef every damn day. Until today, I had no idea that it could be this good. In a way, this place was a small culinary epiphany for me. We had Phillies. They had tomatoes on them? That was weird. I think next time I'd just get the French Dip and say screw the vegetables. I gave this place four stars because the fries were very average, and the chocolate malt was the same. It's hard to screw up either of those things, but when you're presented with one item on the menu of such superb quality, it's kind of a let down when other things on the menu don't quite match up. Great spot for cheap (like really cheap) man food, but truly not for me. I came here for lunch with a group of coworkers and sadly didn't want anything on the menu. All the options were standard meat and potatoes: BBQ Beef, Roast Beef, Meat Loaf, Philly Beef Steak, Prime Dip and Cheeseburgers. Honestly the menu was really boring and I was so surprised there weren't any other options. Who wants chicken anyway? I ended up getting the BBQ beef sandwich because it was the cheapest and had a salad on the side. You can tell salads are pretty foreign to them because they fill a plate with lettuce and throw sliced onions and tomatoes on top that were clearly intended to go on a burger. It tasted fine, it's all just presentation. My BBQ Sandwich was good, but definitely the kind of good you could make at home. For $2.99 though I can't complain about it not being gourmet, it was a good value. The guys I went to lunch with loved it though. They have super limited hours, so no dinner at Wallys, 'but I think you'd want to go here for lunch, moreso, anyway. I had the blue plate special for $6 with an IBC rootbeer and a chocolate malt. The blue plate special is roastbeef, served on thick-cut white bread with a large helping of mashed potatoes and all of it smothered in brown gravy. You also get a little side dish of corn, which I immediately dumped out onto the mashed potatoes :) All of it tasted great and filled me up in a warm way that only my mother's cooking can. read more

It is classic, affordable, stick to your ribs kind of food. On the run and need a quick bite? Grab a roast beef sandwich for $3.49 (plus tax). Bigger appetite? Grab one of the plate specials with meat, bread, potatoes, gravy and veggie - you can call whether you need a full or half order. Sandwiches are served on a toasted bun - condiments, pickles and onions are to the right, by the water fountain. Please use the tongs provided to grab your toppings as I don't want your fingers anywhere near food that someone else might eat. There is also barbeque and horseradish sauce. The horseradish is a creamy type, but any resemblance to Arby's horsey sauce ends there - this stuff has a real kick. FYI - I didn't see any mustard in the area, which would be good on a roast beef with swiss. The coleslaw is lacking. I would never order it again as it was just a 2 ounce cup of nothingness. The roast beef could have stood to be seasoned a bit more, but I guess they keep it bland for the senior citizen crowd. Wally's makes the absolute best roast beef sandwich, I've went here since I was a child and they have always tasted great, I don't even use sauce. My only complaint is that whenever I've had a malt here it has been really syrupy. They make up for it though by carrying the best cream soda on the planet; Sprecher. I do miss the old location, felt like a neighborhood lunch counter, the new location has a much different feel to it, kinda like a corporate cafeteria. It's actually located in an office building now, a really strange change, but ultimately what matters is that Wally's is still an excellent place to eat. The Big Smokey is roast beef with bacon and smoked cheddar. It has a delicious smoke flavor without being cloying or overpowering. The plain roast beef is great with horseradish. Service is limited to ordering at the counter and delivery to your table. The place is a hole in the wall which can get crowded during lunch. I am a tremendous fan of Wally's Roast Beef. My parents took me to this place as a child and I continue to happily go as an adult. If you want the signature Roast Beef sandwich, Saturdays are the day to go - they have Daily Specials, and Saturdays are 2 Roast Beef sandwiches for $5.50 (I think). Otherwise the sandwiches are around $3.50 each. Honestly, I've only ever ordered the RB with au jus. My husband has ordered the blue and green plate specials and has been super happy with it, so I have no doubt that the other food is great. I just can't resist the med-rare to medium cooked beef piled generously on a bun, dipped in au jus, followed with a big gulp of a strawberry malt.. It's the opposite of fancy. Plastic table coverings, an old Juke Box in the back corner, food is brought out on plastic trays and you serve your own sauces from the sauce bar in the back. The horseradish is amazing here, creamy and spicy. It's always packed - during peak lunch times there is a line out the door. Service is usually great, I wish I knew the name of the man who appears to be the owner, he always thanks people for coming in. It's nice to feel like your business is appreciated. read more

Good basic roast beef sandwich, a little on the small side. Added Swiss cheese and some of their horseradish sauce. The flavor was very good, it didn't need any salt or pepper. Careful with the horseradish sauce, this stuff was potent. It was closer to wasabi than any horseradish sauce I've ever had. The fries were good but I don't think worth almost twice as much as a McDonalds small fry. They were very close in size. Again, seasoning was good, somewhat crispy, good, but I don't think 1.79 good. I understand they are in a high rent space in an office building, but, they should have thought of that. I think for that price they should be overflowing the small bag that they come in. I'd heard about Wally's awhile ago, but hadn't had the chance to eat there until yesterday when I was in the area for work. I ordered a plain roast beef sandwich, fries and a grape soda. my order was just under $8 which is reasonable but by no means cheap. Lets start with the Roast Beef which is why I wanted to come here. I love a good roast beef sammy and this one was pretty good. Real roasted beef sliced in the store, unlike what they try and pass off as meat at your local Arby's. It did need a bit of salt and pepper and it could have been just a bit warmer, but overall it was delicious. The roast beef gets a strong 4 stars A bit more generous of a portion and a warmer sandwich would have pushed it to a 5 The fries were definitely not hot. I think if they had been fresher they might have been really good. The oil they were fried in could have been a bit fresher as well. I think next time I'll go for the mashed potatoes. 2 stars on the fries. But since the place is called Wally's Roast Beef and not Wally's fries I'll give the place a 4. I have put off this review for years, but have finally given up my loyalty to there competitor down the street, Penn Avenue roast beef. This has been a personal dilemma for me because I usually root for the underdog. For those that don't know Wally's has been around forever over 50 years but about five or six years ago they the moved to a new location. During that move one of their employees broke off and opened his own restaurant across the street from their old location. the result was two restaurants within a mile of one another with pretty much the same food. That being said I supported both for different reasons. mostly little things like Penn Avenue having better hours staying open later but Wally's having a much better atmosphere. I am finally ready to give my support to Wally's mostly because consistency of food has stayed the same over the years if you want a great home cooked meal at a great price, look to Wally's. Unfortunately they only stay open from 11 to 3 so that's why they get the 4 instead of the 5 read more

So, Wally's moves to a new location and we follow thinking everything is still the same....not. The line was out the door at lunchtime, but after this experience...I'll most likely be taking my $9 elsewhere. The line was long, so it gave me a little time to soak in the atmosphere. Nestled in an office complex (good business move, really), it still had some of the appeal of the old location (jukebox included). Every seat was filled, and I was amused at the mass chaos happening at the front counter. I was hoping it would sort itself out by the time I was able to order. It didn't. The manager greeted me very gruffly, with a really quick "next", and I could tell I was in trouble by the amount of receipts on the counter with first names on them waiting for orders to come up. I ordered up my favorite: the blue plate special, with a can of coke...there are no fountain drinks here for some reason, then attempted to find an open seat. I found the only open table along the side, and sat down. No more than two minutes later my blue plate special was ready. I'm not sure if they had blue plate specials ready behind the counter...but I think I was given an old one. My entire plate was lukewarm. The corn was dry, and the roast beef I remember being so tender and juicy at the old location had been replaced with fatty, tough, dry beef that was placed upon soggy bread and garnished with mashed potatoes that were bland and dry as well. I guess things can't always stay the same...and I am sure most of the people in that office complex are oblivious to the fact that Wally's used to be a great place...but now they are just your average, ordinary restaurant stuck in an office building providing crappy service, and serving up average food to the office drones. To fully enjoy the experience that is Wally's, I made sure to order more than one kind. I chose a regular roast beef sandwich along with the same with a slice of Swiss cheese and followed it all up with fries and a vanilla malt. Talk about some good roast beef! It was tender, had an interesting seasoning and the horseradish and BBQ sauces really hit the spot. Now, I know what you're thinking, if they are so great then why the 4 stars? While the sandwich was absolutely divine, it still left a little something to be desired. It was served a little warmer than room temperature and I guess I was expecting something hot. The same can be said about the fries. However, the amazing taste of the roast beef and the delicious malt more than made up for its shortcomings. TLDR: Get a sandwich and a malt. Real Food. Like 1950s Diner. Kind of a weird location - the 1st floor of an office building - but who cares - the food is great. Wally's was packed and the line was out the door at weekday lunch - its easy to see why. Tasty piles of medium rare, juicy, roast beef. Served at room temperature as to keep the pink juicy goodness perfect without over cooking it by keeping it hot. The buns are grilled and steaming bowls of Au Jus for dipping warm up every bite. So good. Thick, sturdy, crunchy, fries. How do they do that? Every table had baskets of huge onion rings for sharing. I got the Blue Plate dinner with real mashed potatoes, layers of roast beef between 2 slices of white bread all smothered in brown gravy. Crisp corn on the side. Heaven! All the sodas are canned and there is some nice seating on the patio weather permitting. Order when you walk in at the counter and they bring the food to your table. If you are going to the Mall of America - eat here first. Just blocks away from the Mall of America. There seems to be a little bit of a competition in the Twin Cities for best Roast Beef sandwich between Mayslacks in NE, Maverick's in Roseville, and Wally's in Bloomington. Each is worth a trip but Wally's is the best. Mayslacks has a full bar so that is nice for the weekends and evenings. read more

Should've read the reviews. I was confused by all these exit only doors! Soon enough I figured out you had to walk into the building to get into the entrance. Duh! I got there a bit after lunch rush but there were still a few tables and a couple singles sitting around enjoying their meals. The jukebox was playing nostalgic music, my favorite of the day, Crazy by Patsy Cline, kept me company while I waited for my order. It took about 5-10 mins to get my to go order of a French Dip and cheesy fries. I think what really got me though was the price for the quality. For that price the meal really is insanely tasty. I couldn't finish it, it was a lot of food but it was well worth the $7 I spent on it. The roast beef had a slightly sour taste to it which intrigued me, but the meat was tender like nobody's business. The bread was soft yet chewy, buttered and toasted, AMAZING. The au jus was good albeit a bit messy, the way it was intended. The cheesy fries were well worth the less than $2 price tag. They were fried to a crisp, you could tell they were made from real potatoes. The cheese though is a better quality nacho cheese, so don't be expecting cheddar fries now!
