Whew! Overwhelming and exciting at the same time. There was so much to see and do. We checked out the Wall backyard and had a great time with tons of photo ops. We enjoyed a quick bite in the dining room. We shopped till we dropped and played in the arcade. Parking is a little busy so have patience. We had fantastic time!!!
Some people say this place is a tourist trap, but I actually found it very cool to visit. I stopped here because I was starving, and there's really not much to eat between Rapid City and Sioux Falls. It was a cold, rainy day, and I originally thought it was right off I-90, but it's actually about a mile or so after exiting the freeway. There were still quite a few people when I arrived. I entered through the main entrance and walked past a few gift shops before finding the café in the back. The café was nicely decorated for the holidays, which made it feel cozy and welcoming. It's an order-at-the-counter place , you pay first, then they call your number when the food is ready. The menu is pretty basic, mostly burgers and sandwiches. I went with a classic burger and skipped the fries and onion rings since I'm trying to avoid fried food. The burger was delicious, though that might have been partly because I was really hungry. I don't usually shop at gift stores, so I can't say I noticed anything particularly interesting there. If you do , I won't be surprised you stuck there for hours ... Overall, I'd say it's better than I expected and not as much of a tourist trap as people make it out to be.

At their peak, more than 250 billboards counted down the remaining 180 miles. Well, Wall Drug has decisively crushed Pedro Palace's guerilla marketing team. That's because the billboards for Wall Drug can be found on an approximately 650-mile-long stretch of Interstate 90 from Minnesota to Billings, Montana. So, what exactly is Wall Drug? It's literally in the middle of nowhere in Wall, SD, where the city's 2020 census population counted 699 residents. It's a roadside attraction and tourist stop near the Badlands National Park. The complex includes a collection of cowboy-themed stores, a drug store, gift shop, restaurants, cafeteria, chapel, and an art gallery, On-line descriptions range from a "complete tourist trap" to "amazing". Think of it as a huge shopping mall for tourists looking for t-shirts, toys, pottery, art, clothes, novelties, etc. They are renowned for their chocolate, vanilla, and maple cake donuts, free ice water, five cent coffee, a backyard courtyard for picnics with kiddie attractions and some cool photo ops with a scaled down Mount Rushmore, a real stuffed Bison, and a 6-foot rabbit. Our tour bus topped there for a lunch and a shopping break, and we had a blast. I had a Bison Hot Dog ($9.59) that was pretty good! I found it to be awesome, a real treat for the senses, with colorful sights everywhere. Eat your heart out, Pedro......
A spectacle in every way! Interesting dioramas and placards around every corner that really draw you into the experience. Much of the merchandise is quality and furthermore, interesting! At the cafe, the pie seemed more made from pantry staples than homemade, but will defer judgment on the greater food menu until next visit.
First of all, they do the most coolest marketing ever with road signs starting 40 miles away and being placed like every mile. Just brilliant, esp if there are kids bored in the car needing a car game. By the 18th sign I was invested and had to see if they really have donuts and clothes and all the other 500 things they were advertising. They do. Including the bison burger. Which was yummy. I was not expecting inside to look like shops meet universal studios inside an unassuming building. My mind could not comprehend everything I was looking at, honestly, but I got some super cool wall drug souvenirs for my family now, and cannot wait to show them my pics and tell them about this place. It's unreal and really cool.
Wall Drug was a bucket list stop for us and we saw at least a 100+ signs along the way! Not that it's super exciting or anything I guess it's just the historical hype for me. We enjoyed a quick stop had a tasty donut, the free ice water and the nostalgia of sine childhood memories hit us. They also have 5cent coffee that they're famous for but we had a big day planned at the Badlands so I didn't want to risk needing a bunch of bathroom breaks. The donuts were especially good I'd grab 1 or 2 if I was you!
Interesting stop when visiting Badlands National Park. The park is gorgeous and Wall Drug has interesting shops, quirky decor, and good donuts. The vanilla donut was my favorite. I'm giving two stars because I was disappointed in the amount of items that are "designed" in the United States but made in China. I was hoping to see more items made in South Dakota- I can buy China on Amazon. I did, however, find some nice pottery made by Native Americans. I was glad to see they had some things that weren't made in China.
Definitely a tourist trap but still worth the stop! I was ready to skip this place because of the tourist type crowds but we decided to check it out anyway and I have to admit it was pretty neat. It's at least worth a quick visit. There's so much to see, almost overwhelming at first. You could easily spend hours exploring but we were in and out in about 20 minutes. Picked up a T-shirt and some stickers, and that was good for us. We tried the donuts--highly recommend. Very good! The only downside was the women's bathrooms were being cleaned while we were there, which caused a long line (about 20 people) for a single stall. Parking was easy--there's extra parking lots for bigger vehicles and parking along the side streets as well. And if you have an extra time, you should check out the library. It was unfortunately closed when we stopped by, but worth the visit as well!
If we hadn't already had this place on our radar before we left the house, I don't know how we would have ever known this place existed....that was sarcasm. I'd been here as a kid, so I did have this already on our list of spots, but we would have probably been drawn in by the 10 thousand roadside billboards along the way. Making our way from Michigan to Yellowstone, this was an obvious stop to stretch and do the usual "we're finally free from the car" things. This place was huge and pretty much a mall. They have a bookstore, jewelry store, shoe stores, food, fun photo ops with old statues on benches, and of course TONS of people just trying to stay out of each other's way. We didn't spend much time here, but the time I did spend was at the "Hole in the Wall" book store. I love getting books for my niece and nephews so I did grab some things there. With the ten thousand billboards along the road, it is hard to forget or miss. It was definitely a fun little stop on the way to our next stop, which was Mount Rushmore.
When in Wall you must visit Wall Drug. After a day in the Badlands decided to stop in and check it out. When you walk in make sure to ask for a map. So many gift shops you can get lost. Definitely for tourists and prices are a little high. But you're on vacation so enjoy. This establishment goes back to 1931. Few customers stopped in. The owner decided to put up a sign on the highway saying free ice water. Everything changed people were pouring in. Today you can come in and get a cup of coffee for a nickel. It's a must see!!
The Hustadt's moved out here in 1931 & they offered free ice water to those passing through. Now there are endless signs every few feet with billboards taking us here. We followed the lines of the crowds inside at lunchtime. Today we came for lunch. We waited on a long line, placed our order & were given a number. We found a table to enjoy our lunch. Lunch was $40 with water & was just okay. The line moved a lot faster than we expected. We wandered around again for 2 hours, exploring the back of Wall this time. Two hours is actually too much time to spend here after work eating lunch. We explored all of the shops and we were done in one hour. A lot of different things that we wouldn't normally see back home.
A trip to Badlands NP is not complete without a stop in Wall, SD and a stop at the famous WALL Drug Emporium. Food, fun, shopping (leather, hats, t-shirts, etc), art displays, memorabilia and, of course, drugs and related sundries are available for purchase. Yes, their really is FREE ice water as well as 5-cent coffee for a quick pick me up. Exit #110 off I90 right past the #80 ft dinosaur! Enjoy nostalgia at its best.
We ended a trip to the Badlands with a meal at Wall Drug. The restaurant seats several hundred people and definitely has a cafeteria feel. We had pulled pork sandwiches and buffalo burgers and a maple donut. The sandwiches were good, not great, and they arrived very quickly. The maple donut was really good. The rest of the complex is filled with shops and exhibits. The shops range from tacky tourist crap to nice jewelry. There are also a few activities. For $12 you can buy a bag of sand filled with gems or fossils and "pan" for the goodies.

Meh. It was Okay but the pecan roll was not that great. However, the plain donut we ordered, absolutely delicious. I understand the appeal and tradition but it wasn't my cup of tea. Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota, turned out to be more frustrating than fun. The endless billboards along the highway build it up like Buc-ee's in Texas--a sign practically every mile until you finally reach the store. Once inside, the place is split into what feels like 15 different sections, and each one seems to require you to pay before moving on to the next. The staff came across as unfriendly, which made the experience even less enjoyable. Trying to find a men's restroom that was actually open felt like navigating a corn maze in Nebraska--confusing and time-consuming. On top of that, the aisles are incredibly narrow, making it difficult to move around when it's busy. While it's a famous roadside stop, I found it more of a headache than a highlight. read more

Wow. I think Wall Drug has the most iconic marketing strategy: billboards and small roadside signs all along the interstate and state roads from one border to the next. Five cent coffee? well, yes! world famous? maybe not. Touristy? Hell yes. I make infrequent stops to Wall Drug, and when I do stop, it's not because I want to, but after miles of interstate driving, you have that not-subliminal Wall Drug marketing seep into your brain and your car just starts detouring you to it. I stop for the donuts. Yes. Donuts. Plain or frosted. It's not really a drug store, but a block long set of shops connected inside and selling all types of kitschy and touristy gadgets and dust collectors and even some useful, fun things. Wall Drug also has a restaurant of sorts where you go through a line, order, and then they call your number and you pick it up at the counter. It isn't cheap and it is always busy. The kitchen does a good job of keeping the food coming out and the cashiers have that blasé "yes, honey. you aren't going to phase me, so just order and move along" attitude. On this visit, I tried the buffalo burger and while I waited, snacked on a donut. Honestly, I could have dumped the burger. There might have been a micro-spec of buffalo meat held in with lots of filler. It wasn't that good. The onion rings, however, were beyond tasty. Note to self: next time order donuts and onion rings. Healthy eating be damned. The layout of Wall Drug is one that keeps you captive. The shops have openings into the next section but try to find an exit to get out of this place and you'll understand the phrase rat-in-a-cage. Despite all of that, it's a fun place to spend time. Aside from the food, the prices are reasonable and my interactions with the employees have all been positive. read more

Neat and quirky place. Definitely a must see tourist stop. Cool stores, lots of history, and fun photo opportunities. The backyard portion wasn't open when I was there, likely due to it being off season I assume (visited in October). Food in the cafe was alright. Had the buffalo burger and onion rings. One of my favorite places to stop on the way out to the Black hills and on the way back. Always fun to go with your kids to the big backyard and see the T-Rex. You try one of their specialty donuts and enjoy the five cent coffee along with it in the dining room. Check out all of the art around food areas as well as the ceilings which have all of the local cattle brandings on wood boards all around the top. They have an amazing camping store with all kinds of inexpensive knives that will drive kids crazy. Good deals around on Black hills Gold rings and jewelry. Spend some time and see all the fun things to do here. read more

This is an interesting place to visit! Lots of history and souvenirs here. I dont think I would wait in line to get in BUT I do think it's deserving of a stop. I love that postcards are $.35 and there are many to choose from. I also love that military families get a free donut and coffee-thank you so much for honoring our sacrifice! I will also give a shout out to the very best cinnamon pecan roll-only $6.95 and the size of your face. That alone is worth the stop! After passing and reading the numerous road signs we had to make a stop at Wall Drug. We were really intrigued by the free ice water and assumed there was a history behind it. And there is! It took us a while to locate the freebie which was enjoyed after checking out the stores. We had a chocolate milk shake from the parlour. It was ok. Tasted similar to a frosty from Wendy's Burger Joint. We had dinner at Red Rock last night that we did a separate review. On our way back on the road we had to try the famous doughnuts. We picked up chocolate and vanilla ones. They were a solid four but would be a five if they were warm. Wall Drugs IS the town of Wall SD. It seems to be the anchor of the town and doesn't let you down. Is have everything you could want within its walls from 5 cent cup of coffee, a pretty decent restaurant, homemade admits, plenty of trinket shops and some great art stores and legit western apparel stores, and even a chapel for the weary traveler and low down sinners seeking redemption. Around it is a town filled with things to do, sites to see, and stuff to accumulate. Several really great shops with fairly reasonable prices. Check out the restaurants and cafes. It really is more than a tourist trap kind of town. Wall gives you some really good history and value for its offerings. You can really spend a few days here. A great stop for kids and adults alike. Plenty of parking and some great motels from local to chain. All the signs advertising Wall as you travel on I-90 are worth heeding. Try out the town of Wall SD you won't be sorry. read more

If you're traveling through South Dakota, stopping at Wall Drug is a must. Total tourist stop, but huge place. Kind of like a mini mall with small church, tons of food, gifts, candy etc. The restaurant inside has decent food and huge donuts! If you need a break from driving this is the place. Vibe: Proof Advertising Works Parking: Free on Main Street and multiple other lots for campers, semi or trucks I started seeing signs for this place in WYOMING. It was lunch time so decided to drop in. The place is huge and you could easily spend several hours wondering from place to place within the green doors. I found the dinner and ordered: Buffalo Burger, onion rings and coke. Price was $23.87. Definitely not worth the price! Pretty sure it wasn't buffalo, but was Ok. If you're driving by on interstate 90, definitely worth stopping in. Just to let them know their advertising department is worth the money. read more

We followed the billboard signs for 200 miles. How could we not stop. We got our 5 cent coffee and freshly made donuts. Coffee was not very good. Ice water was no better. There were plenty of shops with interesting souvenirs. There were really good picture ops for kids of all ages. I'm happy we stopped and explored this tourist trap. This is like a super-mega tourist attraction that's located in South Dakota near Badlands National Park and a variety of other attractions in the area. If you're in the area you pretty much have to stop here. They have everything. Whatever kind of souvenirs you can dream of, they have them. The place is huge. It's got a restaurant, clean restrooms, and is generally just a sight to behold. If you wanted to run in and out just to take a look at it, it would probably take you 20 mins just to walk through the entire complex. It's really insane. Easy, free parking just about a half block away, all the souvenirs you can dream of, a restaurant, clean restrooms, and an atmosphere that's some kind of cross between the old west and a carnival. Definitely stop and check it out. read more

Okay so I can see why some folks might not be super impressed with Wall Drug, afterall it is a roadside attraction at its core. That to me though, is where the magic lies because Wall Drug is the end all be all roadside attraction. The people that created Wall Drug clearly understood the assignment. First of all, there isn't a lot on the stretch of highway between Omaha, NE and Wall, SD. So, once you enter that stretch of highway you'll begin to see signs for Wall, and I have to lend it to their marketing team as the billboards are nothing short of delightful. In case you are wondering, we counted 100 (we kept a tally) this time as we approached. Which, honestly, is worth the four stars in and of itself. What dedication. Wall Drug opened its doors about two generations ago offering free water and 5c coffee to folks stopping to gaze at the Badlands, and it just sort of grew from there. What was once a small town drugstore became the sprawling attraction it is today. When you pull into the town of Wall you'll quickly discover that Wall Drug what not only keeps this place afloat (along with the proximity to the Badlands), but it's also probably about 1/4 the square footage of the town. It's massive, sprawling, and includes a restaurant, ice cream parlor, souvenir shop, Zoltar machine, animatronic entertainment (think Goofy movie), and all kinds of surprises and photo ops. Is this a place you travel to just to see it? Probably not, but if you are driving by it's unique enough that I think it's well worth the stop. If you have kids they will be entranced by the animatronic dinosaur, if you're solo, you'll marvel at how unique and spectacularly kitsch the place is. This was my second visit, and my first time really walking through it as the first visit was a quick pit stop on much longer road trip. All in all I think if you come here with an open mind, and know it's a road side stop you'll be impressed, enjoy some laughs, and probably bring home some funny souvenirs. Only downside is that the food (IMO) is a bit expensive for what it is, but there are limited options in Wall so I get it to a certain degree. On a side note, with it being an election year I was pleasantly surprised at how the owners of this place kept politics out of their store. As I've traveled around America in recent years I've found that tons of souvenir shops carry tons of items pertaining to politics and I was honestly surprised and refreshed to find that I didn't see any of that here. It really made for a more welcoming and inclusive space. At any rate, if the 100 billboards leading up to Wall Drug, along with the free ice water, and zoltar machine don't entice you let this be your official recommendation to give it a go, it's free to walk around so why not enjoy it! read more

I can't believe that this place has been going strong since the 1930s! Pretty amazing. I was really drawn in by the 1,000 billboards that I saw from Rapid City to Mitchell and back again. But, I stayed for the free ice water. I grabbed lunch after a long day of driving and got inside just shortly after it had started raining, so it was nice to be cozy inside. I had a cheeseburger with fries and a nice pickle spear! They've got everything you need... restrooms, food, sweet treats, souvenirs, and history! Don't forget to stop by. read more

I loved my visit to Wall Drug! The 5 cent coffee tasted pretty good ( I added creamer and had several cups). It was totally fine to take the coffee around while browsing in the various shops and viewing the attractions. I had so much fun exploring and looking for souvenirs to purchase. The employees were so friendly. But the best part were the homemade donuts! I tried the ones with maple frosting and chocolate frosting. Both were great but the maple was AMAZING! read more
This review is specifically about the donuts at Wall Drug. I originally visited this tourist trap a couple of years ago and after biting into my first Wall Drug donut I knew I had to revisit. Plain Donut ($2.29), Frosted Donuts ($2.59 each) - On this last visit, we ended up getting four total donuts, one of each type: Plain, Maple Frosted, Chocolate Frosted, and Vanilla Frosted. I found the vanilla to be the sweetest which kind of overpowered the vanilla flavor. The maple doesn't keep well at all. After only being in the bag for 30 minutes, the frosting completely stuck onto the wax paper and basically made this into a plain donut. The frosting essentially melded into the paper and it was impossible to remove. The chocolate was the best of the bunch - chocolatey, not too sweet, and the entire donut managed to stay intact in the package. To be honest, though, the frosting is kind of secondary to the donut itself, which is superb. This is the only donut shop I've been to where the donuts actually have a thin fried external layer that exhibits a very nice light crisp, adding a good textural contrast to the fluffy interior. The cake donut interior is moist, fluffy, and just fantastic. Honestly, it's one of the best cake donuts you can find. Wall stuff is definitely a tourist trap but the donuts here are legit. They also sell day old donuts in half dozen or dozens for half off. We actually left the maple donut for the next day and the exterior crust was still there. The only downside was the donut was a smudge drier. It was still pretty good, so I guess the day olds might be worth it? read more

I knew what Wall Drug was going to be. It's a roadside attraction for tourists to stop at on their way through the middle of the state and to vacation adventures. To their credit, the folks at Wall Drug did (and continue to do) a great job making it what it is. Their blast marketing as you travel through the state is impressive, the commitment to the vibe and theme is very well done. So, it's good at what it is. It's just not the vibe for me, aside from the obligatory stop to say I stopped and to get a souvenir for my collection. After only a quick walk through, I was already tired of people and ready to be on my way again. read more

The advertising for this place is unreal. I can't tell you how many billboards we saw on our road trip leading into Wall telling us all the things we could find at Wall Drug! It's a neat little place to pop into and check out just to say you did it. Take the opportunity to buy souvenirs for everyone back home, too. Driving east to west billboard for Wall Drug started from 350 miles out. It consists of a food cafe area, surrounded by two tourist shops where you can buy postcards, magnets and the works, as well as separate specialty tourist goods like a shop for jewelry, one for art, one for gemstones, etc. Honestly, it was just ok and not really worth your time unless you just want to be able to buy all your souvenirs in one place. I did buy a postcard, magnet, and a gem windchime as gifts. We also ate at the cafe and I got what it was well known for, the hot beef sandwich, which consists of roast beef on white bread doused in gravy, it was too much. Roast beef was very dry and it felt like the gravy was an attempt to cover up how dry it was. For the price, you can have better food. Service was good and friendly at all the shops and cafe. read more
