Beer Only Review Walking Man is one of our favorite beers. The only place you can get it is at the Stevenson brewery or one of the local restaurants/pubs that have been on tap. There are many good brew pubs around here, but we always look forward to a Walking Man. Keep in mind this is a small brew pub in a small town. When it gets crowded, the staff may be a little slow. The limited hours are part of that small town thing. I've eaten there a couple times, not enough to rate the menu, we don't really go there for the food. read more

We stopped in here for lunch over the weekend and were thoroughly impressed with the service, atmosphere, and food! We were super short on time, poor planning on my part!, and the waitress we had was so wonderfully accommodating. The outdoor patio was super charming! This place is a great place to go for pint... or two and for those not yet able to partake in fermented beverages or if you just don't care for them, they also offer sodas or tea. The atmosphere is very friendly and casual and the food, even though its limited, is very good, definitely not your 'typical' bar food. The beer selection is excellent; I would highly suggest the 'taster tray'. This is the perfect place to go after a hike/sight seeing or even after a day of pampering at the spa. Just make sure you are aware of the time since they open late in the afternoon and close typically by 9pm. read more

You drive over this bridge (toll bridge; Stevenson has a cover charge!) across this impossibly beautiful part of the Gorge, into a little town that looks like a picture book village, and then around back of an old, rickety building. Down a gravel driveway, along a walk past untamed plants, hard right into...this gorgeous, perfect little taproom. What, in all this, is not to like? Walking Man's beers are ASTOUNDINGLY good, especially the Black Cherry Stout, Pale Strider, Old Stumblefoot Barleywine, and especially their flawless Homo Erectus Imperial IPA! I've tasted these all in Seattle before making the drive down to Stevenson and they were all great there. At the actual brewery...there's an added dimension, somehow. We ordered a pizza with the brews and it was as good a pub piza as I have ever eaten: GREAT crust, zingy marinara and fresh, vibrant toppings. The service was, okay, a tad...uh...spacey, but it was prompt enough and the cost of everything was well below the Seattle/Portland averages; $3.74(?) for a pint and $9.99 for the pizza. I would recommend this place to anybody who REALLY appreciates the craft of brewing. For those who don't...stay home, okay? There are few enough places like this and the neophytes just suck up the beer from the rest of us. read more

Came in, grumpy waitresses (it was not busy). Got dark cherry stout that tasted like cough syrup-and I'm use to strong, flavored stouts. Read through the menu; no split checks and 20% minimum tip on parties of 6? You gonna tell me how to wipe as well? front to back ok? Asked if they had a kids menu, was told (in a bit of a snotty voice), "we are kid accessible, not kid friendly." (my kids were sitting down, drinking their root beer, talking at a normal volume; I'm a teacher, they get away with nothing). Walking Man wasn't going to" access" my money. We tried going there on a warm Saturday evening. The outside was full, so we went in and sat at a table in the somewhat less crowded restaurant. It was kind of a zoo, and we soon noticed that.....smell. What was it? Was that a beer soaked rag that ended up in a windsurfer's jockstrap? It was, to say the least, unappetizing. We wanted a beer, though, so we tried again to sit outside. Nothing doing...a 40 minute wait. Inside again? Uhh..........no. Maybe it's warm beer residue, which sounds like it could create that scent. Nuts. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE AND BAD/MEDIOCRE BEER. I have never been so insulted with how I was treated by the staff here. I waited at the bar for what seemed like forever (I think it was 15 minutes or so) until one of the waitstaff even acknowledged my presence. Then, they were not even friendly, polite, nor acknowledged the wait. It was almost creepy. When I was finally served, I figured a nice cold beer would ease my mind, but alas, the beer was not even that great. Too bad, because this could be a cool little place to relax after some Gorge trekking. But, there is no way I'll ever go back there. read more

Beer snob seems like such an elitist term. I prefer beer aficionado. Sounds more likable. So that's what I am. And on a crisp, clear fall afternoon, it seemed like an opportune time to make the trek out to Walking Man. So we did. It was a lovely drive, we got there just before opening time at 3. Take the stairs down to the tasting room, and you will be in for a treat. It's small and cozy, and has a funky cool vibe, which I immediately liked. We ponied up to the bar and ordered a taster tray. It was a pleasure to partake of all the fine beers, some were definite hits, with only a couple not-so-greats for me. The food menu is small, but where it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. I had a beet salad and a pizza and the hubs had a rib eye that was cooked perfectly. We brought home a growler of this outstanding IPA made with honey and agave. I'll say that the growler made it home, but it didn't make it through the night. =) read more

Great beer! Unfortunately, the service totally ruins the drinking experience. We have visited at least three times, and have been ignored upon arrival followed by slow and less than attentive staff. Once we were told the kitchen was closed despite the entire restaurant being filled with eating people, and the time still being relatively early. Overall the service does not do the food and beer justice. Also food is overpriced. read more

Pub fare is dependable. For some reason our waiter was in an extremely punishing mood and we were actually scared of engaging him in any situation where we had to ask for more, so we tried to eat and get out. I would return, but hope to avoid that person for someone friendlier and more accommodating. Stevenson is a small city to put that kind of risk in your business's livelihood. read more

We have been coming here since it opened and each time the service is getting worse and the food is getting worse. This time we came and they're not even barbecuing they had a band out there and we drove all the way from Portland on our motorcycles to enjoy a barbecue which they are not doing. How can they advertise barbecued food without barbecuing food. read more

Awesome patio setting for some warm weather. Beer was excellent for what I tried. Service was good. I got a burger and it was below average and didn't come with fries so the value is a bit low but it wasn't terribly expensive, I think $10. The live music was a plus as well. Third time's the charm! I made three attempts at this brewery and between my bad timing (them not being open for lunch) and an unfortunate pipe burst, it was awhile before I finally made it into Walking Man. We ended up there on a busy Saturday evening to wind down with a victory beer after hiking Dog Mountain. Man, that hike's a dog (ha). The wait staff looked a bit overwhelmed as there were a lot of people there and food and beer were flying past us most of the time. We decided not to sample the foods offered as our timing was too early for dinner and the prices were slightly higher than we were expecting--though nothing compared to Double Mountain (which, don't get me wrong, I LOVE). I think businesses in small towns like this feel like they can push the price a bit since they are literally the ONLY GREAT FOOD IN TOWN. I respect that--just keep it in check. Our beers were good but there's nothing keeping me from passing on Walking Man next time and heading to dinner closer to the city. For just a beer though--I'm a fan! read more

First visit and came with a friend who likes beer but doesn't see good brew pubs in Phoenix. My wife drove so had ice tea and a burger which was ok but too big to finish. (We had started with an order of garlic fries). Friend had steelhead tacos once she had steelhead explained to her: our explanation was adequate but the waiter's was more impressive. She liked her tacos. She had one of the less hoppy beers: striding man or something like that. I had a sausage sandwich: tasty sausage but too much bread and sauerkraut. I had a black cherry stout which really impressed me and an IPA which was ok. I would return for the beer but not the food...but the beer can be very good. My brother-in-law loves the place and it is nice outdoors and very dog friendly. read more

We were camping a few towns over and friends suggested going here for food and beer -- Im so glad they did! The beer flight is amazing (definitely good for 2 or 3 people to split) and the food was great -- we had the hummus, wings and a burger -- all good. Outdoor seating made everything better -- just watch out for the train noise (its just a few blocks away and super loud). I will definitely come back when we're camping in the area again! read more

The beer is good. HOWEVER the waitress we originally had never came back although she was helping other tables. We then ordered a appetizer with a different waitress and waiter tried to give it to another table, mistake I get it. THEN our food was either given to the wrong table or not ordered. Other tables that arrive after us got their food way before us. The waiter came to clear our table before we even got our food. I think they figured out the mistake and remade our food. I get it mistakes happen but maybe let your hungry customers know you messed up?? read more

Found this brewing company by recommendation of three seperate people at Double Mountain Brewery in Hood River. Nice , old exterior, shabby yet cool decor, patio and the beer were awesome. The chick with the bear tattoo on her back was cool and fun. The place was packed and people were enjoying the tranquil and fun patio with lots of labs and other people friendly dogs. The chicken wings were dry and too saucy, but who cares. We were there for the awesome brew. This was my second favorite brewery in the Pacific Northwest behind Double Mountain in Hood River. My third favorite was Lucky Lab in NW Portland . Alpine Beer in Alpine , Ca is still my favorite and their IPA's are by far the best. We loved this place, a real find! Over the course of two visits, tried about half of the brews -- all really terrific. All of our food was excellent .. simple fare, prepared well from great ingredients. I don't get the comments here about the service ... everyone was super nice, considerate, and really tried to be attentive and helpful. Congenial and efficient staff, nice selection of microbrews, limited but decent selection of pub foods. We had the roasted beet salad--generous and tasty, steelhead tacos--delicious and spicy, and pulled pork sandwich--yummy. Barefoot Brown Ale was perfect. Such a pleasant environment with outdoor seating in the sun as well as covered. Servers were friendly and despite being a busy Saturday, were able to keep up. To the menu. I understand that if we all had the same preferences, the world would be boring, but my opinion of the beer is that it's average at best. One of my lunch companions loves IPAs but after working his way through the sampler, said the raspberry wheat was better, not good, just better. That's what I had and it was acceptable, not memorable. Food: We ordered the "loaded" fries for an appetizer, which turned out to be fries drenched in a soup-like cheese sauce that reminded me of Campbell's. Definitely not recommended. My companions ordered sausage & pepperoni pizza and the fish tacos. The pizza passed but the fish tacos looked and tasted (according to my friend) just average. I had the Thai Chicken Pizza. The chicken had an odor; the kind of odor that poultry gets when it has been out of the refrigerator for too long. It was gross and the smell and taste ruined a $15 pizza. You're on your own if you order it. We drove an hour to get to this place. Thankfully it was a nice day, otherwise I'd consider the trip wasted. I'm sure they have good intentions but it's highly unlikely I'll return to Walking Man. read more

Went in the the bar to order and waited 7 more minutes by the counter with only a stare like get the heck out of this establishment. I tried to interrupt and then realized if you are not local or connected, you just aren't going to get served at this place. So no Pizza and beer for me. We were really disappointed in this place. Chicken appetizers came out COLD to the bone, so cold I am not sure how they didn't realize it. THIS COULD MAKE YOU SICK WITH FOOD POISONING AND IS A SERIOUS HEALTH VIOLATION. The appetizer was sent back. They admitted that the chef examined the returned food and did acknowledge the mistake and offered a replacement. We declined to give them a second chance to sell food that could make us sick. read more

I love this place, the beer is good and pours cold! We went in last night after a hike, not my first maybe my 20th time in. I got the millaped red which was awesome and packed a punch being 10% ABV! You can't go wrong with any of their beers in my book! The garlic fries are yummy with a hint of rosemary in them and a good way to start the food! I ordered the steelhead tacos which was great, the only complaint i have is the soft taco shells was cold, but the fish was nice and warm! If they would just warm the shells on the flat top or something it would make them really good! The steelhead blue cheese, pear pizza is really good also! The place is very popular, but base on my experience I just can't see it. A friend and I stopped in to check it out on a very hot summer day. The BBQ outside was cooking up a storm with rock music, it was very unpleasant. We found an outside table and sat down. We chatted with the table next to us as we waited for service. After 15 minutes, the heat and noise were too much, and staff had not come over. We decided to sit inside. As we past another outside table with a dog, the dog snapped at my friend. Scary, we both have dogs. Not appropriate in a food environment. After a couple of minutes inside, a table cleared and we sat down. We got menus and water. The table next to us had the same. In a few minutes, they got up and left without ordering. They wished us luck, they had been waiting a long time. As we waited to order, we saw several small groups leave cause they could not get wait staff. Shocking! Staff was right there at the counter, talking to each other about stuff (not work). After another 15 mins we tried to get their attention to no avail. I finally stepped to the counter annoyed and singled out someone and asked, "Is there anyone to take an order?" They came and was very helpful with their recommendations on beer and food. We like the beer and the food!! It was GREAT! All told, the majority of our visit was spent being ignored by staff. Food was a little pricey but good! I left very much at a loss as to how an establishment with great rep, food, and beer can have such awful service. I have been invited by friends and neighbors to return for a beer or a bite; I decline. I can't say I can justify spending more of my money there. I do not recommend Travelling Man. Save yourself and try somewhere else. read more

Great place for early afternoons. Show up anywhere near closing time and you can sit back and watch your server take drink and food orders from locals/regulars after your drinks arrive. When they finally get back to take your food order after they make exaggerated efforts to avoid your table and eye contact they mumble about "oh I didn't take your food order? Under their breath and try to talk you out of ordering because of how backed up the kitchen is. It was clearly obvious with the interaction of the two servers for the patio that we were not on the list of customers that matter. Never again will I visit after spending multiple years making it my go to spot in Stevenson having planned motorcycle trips and other visits just around being able to stop by, verified by the Instagram posts I have from walking man brewery. This was from a last minute Friday night trip to Stevenson with the agenda of let the dogs swim in a private lake and hit walking man for a great relaxing dinner. read more

Great beer and friendly barkeeps / brewers. I didn't go for food, just the beer. It is made in the back. You have to try the "Jaywalker". It is awesome and incredibly dark. I think it was 13.5% their IPA is also incredible. Get a growler of your favorite beer and go home and drink it by the fire on scold day. Can not say enough good things about how good the beer is. read more
