I attempted to return a new Spanx item that still had the original tags attached and I had my proof of purchase. During the return process, the store manager Angela, denied the return and stated that the item smelled like marijuana. I was surprised and uncomfortable with this accusation, especially because I do not use marijuana nor am I around anyone who does. What was most concerning was the way the situation was handled. I felt embarrassed and disrespected as a customer. The interaction left me feeling that assumptions were made about me rather than my return being evaluated fairly and professionally. As an African American customer, I left the store feeling that I had experienced treatment that may have been influenced by racial bias. I understand that retailers have return policies and the right to inspect merchandise. However, every customer deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism. A customer should not be made to feel accused or stereotyped without clear justification. I have contacted Dillard's corporate office and requested that this incident be reviewed. I hope the company takes this matter seriously and uses it as an opportunity to ensure all customers are treated consistently and respectfully.
