Because I know my products, know what braiding material I need, and for the most part, wear my hair in its natural state, I never need assistance from staff in finding products. Lately I've been noticing interactions between the owners and certain customers. I've watched them greet, be friendly, and make eye contact with various groups of people, but when it comes to Black Americans you appear distant, not friendly, refuse to greet, and have a look of disdain when approached by a Black American. I witnessed the owner standing at the front entrance yesterday, greet a Hispanic couple and an Ethiopian man and blatantly ignore a Black American woman entering the store. Every time we touched a wig, she was immediately there, hovering and watching us like we were doing something wrong. When my daughter picked out a wig to try on, we were told we had to buy a wig cap for $1.09 (which we did, giving them a dollar). While we understood the policy, what was uncomfortable was how this woman continued to stand right next to us the entire time, watching every move as if we were going to steal something. It was humiliating and made both of us feel unwelcome. We were treated with suspicion for simply shopping -- something no customer should experience. I expected. Because of past experiences here, I don't even bring a bag or wear anything that might make employees assume I'm stealing. To be fair, the store is clean, and the cashiers are always polite. We rushed over, her makeup was beautiful and the artist coordinated her makeup to her suit perfectly. They took two of the packs back, but would not take the pack that was opened by the hairdresser because the silver twine wasn't around the hair, and the pack couldn't be resold. I'm a long time customer, and was sold something that is not what I asked for, and I'm out of $50 because my hairdresser opened a bag of hair that she THOUGHT was regular braiding hair. Why am I being penalized for being sold a product I didn't ask for? What a shame. Now I have to find a new favorite beauty supply store. The $180 style stayed on my head for 14 days and I had to take it out. I can respect a stylist who is on-time and who can admit when they cannot do a style that has been requested. It's unsanitary and I'm looking at getting a lawyer for scalp damage. I came in with my natural hair and requested a simple braided style. Instead of being accommodated, I was met with resistance about my hair texture--told it was "too straight and long" for the style, that the braids would fall out, and even that my own hair might get cut in the process. I was pushed toward other styles like regular braids or Marley twists, which I clearly said I didn't want. I'm not spending my hard-earned money--especially in this economy--on a style I didn't ask for. For reference, my hair is only 12-13 inches long, not even bra-strap length. I'm a Black woman, half African on my dad's side, and have been getting braided styles with added hair since I was 8 years old. Never have I heard such nonsense about my hair being at risk from braiding. It felt like laziness or jealousy, honestly. If you can't do a style for a valid reason, that's one thing. But don't treat clients poorly just because you don't want to do the work. The braiders were rude, loud, and clearly didn't think I understood their language--which I do, as it's commonly spoken in their country I felt so disrespected. As I was leaving, one of the owners stopped me and urged me to stay, reminding me I've been a loyal customer for over a decade. She told the braiders to honor my request because this is a business, and they can't afford to lose clients over personal preferences. I stayed out of respect for her, but I shouldn't have. My Friday evening was ruined. And to make matters worse,it hurt so bad, the twists were done roughly because the stylist was clearly angry. Don't take out your frustration on my hair. That was the final straw. I didn't even leave a tip--why would I? Never again. I will never come back here. Never again.
