These big companies also have contracts so they can do lump sum payments or none at all. Small retailers have to take that percent hit for EVERY single transaction. That adds up in the long run, and they would be out of business if they didn't do it. Based on seeing the plastic ballistic windows, I would be hesitant on shopping there in the evening by yourself.

Every couple of years I wander in there, wondering if it's different, but it never is. It only gets grubbier and more cramped. The prices are high even for a convenience store. There are very often sketchy characters hanging around the parking lot and/or the bus stop right out front. I know nothing about the ownership history of the place, but it must be stressful to work there, and unfortunately... it shows. It's not friendly or comfortable. It gets more ghetto as time goes by.
