This is a much more useful Walgreens than others because it's so big, so full of snacks and other sundries you might need as a tourist staying nearby in a hotel and everything isn't locked up so you can get it yourself and bring it up to get checked out. A little short staffed, I always had to wait to check out, but not too long. read more

Clean and modern store! Prices are higher than CVS, I think, but it's a nicer shopping experience here. This location is conveniently right by DTX and has an outdoor seating area for a summer break or quick bite. Inside, this location boasts high ceilings and bright lights and clean tile floors. They have a clean restroom in the basement too, for customers only of course. The pharmacy is large with a huge variety of products/brands. The market is nice, too, with everything fully stocked. Upstairs is the "up market" with wine and beer. Score!! Fresh I has a salad bar/market located within this Walgreens so if you need a quick bite for lunch (among the hundreds of options in DTX), they do offer somewhat fresh food so your only option is not a bag of chips, prepackaged overpriced celery or wine :) read more

We've arrived at the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank. This former Boston Bank is now a Huge Beautiful Walgreens & is their Flagship Store in Downtown Crossing in Downtown Boston. I usually like when they restore a building to its former glory days with the original architecture. When they update & modernize a building they do such a horrible hatchet job they ruin it. This is one of those rare exceptions to the rule. The team of HPA Design have done an UNBELIEVABLE RESTORATION & UPDATING JOB here! This is such a unique shopping experience that combines 4 completely different concepts into one. 1) It feels like you are shopping not at a drugstore but at an upscale department store not from today but from yesteryear. The vintage details are everywhere. 2) At the same time it also feels like you are shopping in a very modern & contemporary store with all your regular drugstore items & a whole lot more including food too. It's a quick in & out All in One Stop. 3) It also feels like you are shopping inside a bank vault from the 1920's with numerous bank architectural elements still in place. 4) It feels like you are shopping in a museum that provides you a rich history of Boston & some of its verbiage & slang & the history of Walgreens combined. All these 4 completely different & unique elements that you would never think would go to together blend in perfect harmony. The building was originally The Boston Five Cents Savings Bank for many years. Then Borders Bookstore was it's previous tenant. Now Walgreens has taken over the space. They have restored the building to its 1920's glory days. Now to get the whole shopping experience here first start your journey on the outside of the building. Check out the exterior of the structure & columns. Head on over to the side of the building; you'll see the beautiful Golden Clock. You'll also view those mighty matching golden bank doors & bank vault windows. You'll also view a Giant Letter W standing for Walgreens. They have the whole Gold Thing going on here. Check out the old fashioned street lights behind the building on Province Street. They are surrounded by flower pots at the top when in season. On the back & side of the structure, you'll see the words engraved in stone The Boston Five Cents Savings Bank. The structure also had an addition in the 70's & they have figured out a way to make everything integrate seamlessly. Now head on over to the front of the building with its Multi Story Glass Front & Mighty Columns & Red Walgreens sign. It stands right in front of the Irish Famine Memorial. The complex is a massive 25,000 square foot space & is near the very popular Freedom Trail. Now head on inside. In addition to all the regular drug store items you'll also discover a department store filled with boutique skin care, beauty & grooming products. You've got to check out the the Food Emporium. There are Lots of Grab & Go items like Sandwiches, Smoothies, Sushi, Salads & much more. They also carry organic items, fresh fruits, vegetables wraps & are all made fresh daily. Of course they also serve as your neighborhood drug store. They offer prescription drugs & over the counter medicines as well and all kinds of different household products too. There are souvenirs of Boston as well - T Shirts etc. There are artifacts, pictures & exhibits throughout the interior & on the walls that tell you a little bit of the history of the site. The architect has restored so many things in here. Check out the preservation of the revolving doors, all the ornamental brass, the decorated plasterwork, the marble floors & period light fixtures. On the second story is a liquor store & provides a panoramic view of the entire store. Then on the first floor in the back of the store there is an actual real bank vault that is open. Inside the vault is the David Morgan Conference Room that is roped off that shows you framed pictures of the history & memorable moments of the Walgreens Company. This truly gives shoppers a unique experience not found in online shopping. No, this is not your average Walgreens. It also stays open quite late too which is just another Bonus! All I needed on this day was a water to go & they had a large selection to choose from. This place is So Cool! I Will definitely be back when I'm in the area! Also there's a great sandwich shop right behind the store called Sam LaGrassa's l- it's expensive but very good. Fresh sushi, lots of ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat meals, a huge selection of drinks and of course candies and snacks. This place has gotten a lot of press lately and people seem to be happy it's here. I had a mixed reaction when I visited the other day. For starters, I still miss the Borders bookstore that used to be in this spot. I know I need to get over it, but there isn't a big bookstore in all of Downtown Crossing now. But back to this Mega-Walgreens which is not just a drug-store by any stretch. It is a drug-store on steroids and possibly LSD. Sure, you can get all your typical pharmacy needs met here but on top of that you can get pre-packaged foods, fresh sushi, fro-yo, freshly made smoothies and juices, salads, souvenirs, a manicure (!), alchohol, and some groceries. Yikes! If this doesn't describe a mélange, I don't know what does. There isn't a supermarket anywhere near this area so for people who live around here this might just seem a little bit like a God-send. And just maybe it will help encourage more residential development on the blight that has become parts of this area of town since the demise of Filene's and the iconic Filene's Basement. I think the biggest benefit for some, might be that there is so much under one roof. In some ways it can be one-stop shopping. And it's open 24 hours. But it all seems a bit too much and there are lots of things I just wouldn't buy here from the looks of things. The fro-yo station was a disaster. The day I visited the machines were drippy and leaky and the toppings area was a complete mess. Someone needs to be on standby to keep that area pristine and the machines in order. Although the sushi looked good, I can't wrap my head around buying sushi in a Walgreen's. Sorry. If I were here for a typical Walgreen's pharmacy item and was short on time, maybe then I would consider getting a salad or fruit or a smoothie here but this would not be a food buying destination for me on its own. The one thing I liked was the very large make-up section on the second floor. I do love my makeup. It was more akin to what you would find in a department store rather than a typical drugstore. Overall, I think this place will do a booming business. It was certainly packed when I was in there. But for me, I would prefer if it was still a bookstore. read more

This is the craziest Walgreen's I've ever been in! It's pretty cool...great selection, interesting space - not like the crappy Walgreen's where I live. My only knock is that is could be a bit cleaner. The frozen yogurt station was disgusting during my visit...the only thing missing were rats and cockroaches crawling around the counter. I'm writing this as a person that used to go to Borders bookstore before this location became Walgreens. I was working in this area when the change happened and had probably gone in a handful of times after the change since I was close to it work-wise. Well today (years later) I went to it again because the CVS at Center Plaza is gone so I took the walk. OMG. I hate it. The layout is horrible. If you enter on Washington Street, you're automatically in a hybrid produce/cold drink/pantry section, and all the checkout counters are on this first level. If you want anything else, knees be damned, climb the stairs to the next level (yes, there is a smallish elevator if need be but... I would advise to just go to another location that's fully disability accessible (I'm abled, but I was astounded at the lil elevator that can only take one maybe 2 people between floors, especially in a high traffic place like DTX)). I got up to the second floor and the aisles are trash. Why are the lotions next to the birthday card/paper products aisle, and the CeraVe body lotions are out on one aisle *wide open*, but the whole line of CeraVe including the whole face/body line is under lock and key? I picked up a Hemps body lotion (which is the same price as CeraVe) on a wide open aisle, and went in circles trying to find the CeraVe brand face products which were locked up. I pressed the button to call someone to open, and as I waited I looked across the aisle and saw that the whole Dove section (body wash, shampoo, etc) was locked up as well. The entire back end of this same floor is dedicated to makeup/beauty brands that cost more than the basic brands, but were wide open on display. Also, since that back end was also the "skincare consultation" part of the store, I would have imagined there would be at least one person there to consult you if you had any questions...but no. It felt like no one was on this floor to help until I hit that button to have a rep open the case. And afterwards, as soon as I moved to another aisle, here comes a rep who wasn't there previously throughout my entire time on this floor to tell me about coupons for a brand I wasn't even interested in. And the one thing that hit me to make me reminisce of Borders was when I went in line to check out, and when I looked up I realized the 3rd floor was still there but is now a packy. That used to be the area to get a coffee, and go chill with a book, and to relax, and see the entirety of the bookshelves and people below. Now it's just a reminder at checkout that you don't have that magnum of Barefoot wine for $12. *sigh* read more

3.5 STARS Walgreens advertises that they are the corner of happiness and health. That is the case for the majority of Walgreens. This Walgreens is the block of happiness and health. The Washington at School Streets Walgreens is one of and if not the largest locations that I have ever stepped inside of. At 24, 745 square feet it is so large that if I had stepped foot in this building before Walgreens opened in it prior to 2013, I would be inside a Border's Books. Prior to that I would of been in the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank Building that opened in 1973. Besides the gigantic size of this Boston flagship location it is a unique location in other ways. This is a Walgreens along Bostons Freedom Trail the infamous walkway that connects Boston Commons to Bunker Hill with several historic points of interest along the way. You could say it sits at the corner of Happiness, Health, and Freedom. Between the Freedom Trail and the entrance is the Irish Famine Memorial that serves as a small park with benches and statues. The most unique characteristics is inside Walgreens. At the far end of the store sits a diminutive Walgreens Museum. Walgreens reassembled the David M. Morgan Conference room inside the former vault of the Boston Five Cents Savings Bank incarnation of the building. Proceeding this review, there is a picture of a historic room complete with the time line events in Walgreen's history. I have yet to see something like this in my neighborhood Walgreens. Finally throughout the interior that is adorned with columns, abundant glass windows that capture sunlight, and interesting architecture there is an attempt at a Boston motif. For example the sign above the dry grocery says, "Paul Revere makes a ride for smoothies. Bostonians dive into sushi. Revolutionary salads. Ivy League sandwiches...." This isn't your grandmother's Walgreens. The pharmacy is just one component of the business. It is a mini 24 hour super convenience store that goes over and above the standard drug store. Upstairs, there is a liquor shop that features a kiosk that instructs people how to make drinks. Downstairs in addition to the retail there are fresh sushi, sandwiches, Coke Freestyle machine, self serve yogurt, meals on the go, and smoothie bar. It wasn't fresh sushi or a smoothie that I purchased. I walked outside Walgreens and into the Irish Famine Memorial with a Boston magnet. Their souvenir aisle is a worthwhile stop for a Boston souvenir in a downtown with a dirth of souvenir shops. The prices are competitive to what a souvenir shop would have. When I purchased the magnet and bottle water, I entered a cue similar to the Walgreens locations on the Las Vegas Strip. There is one long cue that leads to a long counter of separate cashiers. When a cashier light blinks that register is open. In a few of the prior reviews it has been brought up that the employees are rude. The cashier that rang me up was inattentive to the degree that I had to go back into the store to mention that she owed me a $1. Without an attitude she gave me the $1 that she overlooked. At the corner of Happiness, Health, and Freedom in a location surrounded by history, based on what I have written this Walgreens is the future of the drug store. If Paul Revere were alive today just maybe he would take a ride to the Boston Flagship Walgreens for smoothies. Whether it's Paul Revere or yours truly, this Walgreens provides the customer with a unique and convenient shopping experience along the Freedom Trail. read more

DTXers rejoice! The empty space that Borders left in the heart of The Crossing has been filled -- and not just with any drug store, but the fanciest damn Walgreens you'll ever see. The place has a sushi station, a juice bar, an entire floor of wine, beer and liquor, a self-serve fro-yo aisle with advanced flavors like red velvet, DIY toppings, an electronic screen that lets you mix Coca Cola products to create 120 different flavors (raspberry Coke!!), and [gasp for breath] a virtual bartender machine that will suggest drink recipes and help you plan your next party. DTX was begging for a 24-hour joint, and this place is the absolute jackpot. Word to the wise, though -- liquor/wine/beer floor closes at 10 pm. Happy shopping! read more

Yes, I give this Walgreens credit for its location. Enclosed within a glass and concrete facade right in front of the Irish Famine memorial, it's certainly pleasant to walk into this store. Once you get inside, it's pretty standard Walgreen's stuff - snacks and drinks near the front of the store, toiletries elsewhere. Thankfully, checkout is one unified line, so you don't have to gamble on which lines moves more quickly. I didn't see any self-checkout machines, for what it's worth. read more

Last review for '13!!!! Okay, now this is one of the best drugstores that I've ever been to, and for a Walgreens at that! Granted that I was used to this space being a humongous bookstore (Borders), it looks even better as a 2 level drugstore, complete with a Mezzanine floor that has beer, wine, and hard spirits (this was the reason for my happiness with this drugstore, well to be honest one of the few). More reasons why this Walgreens has 5 stars in my book? - There are bathrooms that are available to the public, and are clean too. - Displays are nicely arranged, and aisles are stocked full with everything needed for your household, medical, and beauty needs. - There's a help yourself frozen yogurt section. I mean, come on...really?!?!?! - There's a smoothie corner. Seriously...you should be running to this location by now. - Employees are super nice and helpful. - To all the ladies: There's a giant open space in the Beauty section of the store that has anything and everything makeup related. I work at a Walgreens across the street from my apartment, but it sure doesn't look like this one! This store is one of Walgreens' newest flagships and let me tell you, it is divine! Honestly, if this store was in my neck of the woods, you would probably find me here 24/7. They have a great variety of fresh foods daily to choose from - sushi, wraps, sandwiches, smoothies, entrees - you name it! They also have a mani/pedi bar and a pretty sweet pharmacy. The pharmacists don't have to hide behind the counter here. Instead, they verify prescriptions via video so that there is more time for patient interaction! How awesome is that? Hopefully Walgreens can start rolling out this revolutionary pharmacy idea to more of their stores across the country soon! One negative is that I'm pretty sure the prices at flagships are higher than the regular Walgreens stores. However, this makes sense from a marketing perspective. read more

This review is on the restrooms only. My son and I were visiting the area during our annual fall vacation together. We popped into this Walgreens for a few necessities. After making our purchase we ran downstairs to use the facilities. For a company who is at the corner of Health & Happiness, we felt like we had stepped through a wormhole. It was filthy, absolutely atrocious. As an adult female, I'd venture to say, the dirtiest restroom I've seen in my life. My son had a similar experience in the men's room, saying it boarded on frightening. Very disappointed. read more

A cashier called a manager named Z to the register I was getting checked out at because the cashier needed assistance with my return. She came and helped quickly and made sure everything was perfect. I wish she is at the store more because when I went on February 13th, I left the store with a headache and no support. Z is a good addition to Walgreens. What's always bothered me about Walgreens is that it seems like it always takes forever to get out of there. I know that people are all a buzz with this location, but pretend for a second this wasn't Walgreens. It is basically an overpriced grocery store with a few added features of which you could find better options nearby. The smoothie was good but it literally took 15 minutes to get it and there were only 2 people ahead of my order and what looked like a dozen people behind the counter. Believe it or not the sushi was delicious, I tried the crunchy roll. The only problem is that they are charging restaurant prices for supermarket sushi. Horrible customer service. I'm appalled at how poorly I was treated. Three different employees were rude to me, inattentive and completely unhelpful. I only came in because I was sold the wrong item at a different Walgreens location and charged more. Apparently I need to go back to the other store, which is in a different city. I love sushi and salads as much as the next guy but they roll those things in until about noon and then they sit there for the day. They won't hurt you if you get your sushi from Walgreens at 3am. I will agree that this Walgreens is on steroids and can understand why it would be more drugstore than any local in the area needs. I'd probably avoid it if I were at home in Chicago, it's big and has just about everything. Is it a big Walgreens or a small Target? Whatever it is, for a weary traveler that has a mini kitchen in her hotel room looking to buy some milk, yogurt and other little assorted eats, it hit the spot. Booze, Band-Aids and Boots No. 7? I want to move in here. During my lunchtime, I can get a manicure while I'm waiting for my prescription then pick up some fro-yo and a sandwich and go back to work a happy lady. I could write a thousand character essay on why this place rocks but everything's been said in other reviews. The only downside to this is the juice/smoothie bar. It does take forever to get help even if you're the only person standing at the register and there are workers behind the counter staring blankly at the yogurt covered pretzels in the aisle in front of them. The smoothies and juices themselves are ok. I don't know if it's the way the smoothie is being prepared or the recipe but a couple of smoothies I've gotten were the consistency of sludge. I had to defrost them before I could drink them. The cosmetics/skincare department in the back is decent if you're looking for drugstore brands that are hard to find -- Avene, Boots No. 7, Pur Minerals for example. The staff is super helpful and always smiling. Added bonus - sometimes there is a floor show! I saw a totally drunk guy go to the pharmacy and try to get some xanax. The pharmacist seemed ready for this type of situation and informed him that there was no prescription on file for him. He asked the pharmacist for a few pills until he could get to his doctor. SECURITY! This is definitely the downside of having a 24-hour pharmacy in this location. read more

Finally, a place to meet my drug store sushi needs. This Walgreens is pretty, all pristine white and bright lights. Expansive selection of your typical drugstore stuff: toiletries, makeup, paper goods, house necessities and random didn't-know-you-need-it-til-you-saw-it items. BUT this mecca also has sushi, salads, prepared foods, smoothies, and...alcohol. That's right kids: Grab a toothbrush, grab your Nana a birthday card, and grab yourself a 6pack all in the same Walgreens trip. I'm not thrilled about what it says about Boston that a prime DTX space formerly occupied by a bookstore is now playing house to a monster drugstore with a booze section...but mine is not to wonder why. On a slightly picky note, my main drugstore purchases are Diet Coke and fashion magazines, so demerits for a pretty subpar magazine selection. Here's why: - Nail polish organized by brand and color. What is this, Sephora?! This is amazing. I can't even explain to you how my heart sings gazing at the OPIs all lined up in this season's color-coordinated order. -The booze section. Not only is this a solid section for a Walgreen's, I'll admit: it's a solid section for anywhere. Walls and walls of wine, organized by type (which means at least one person there knows the difference between all the reds..well done. Good hiring.). Barefoot Wine color coordinated into a rainbow--trust me, it's beautiful. AND Franzia here is $5 cheaper than at the liquor store. Classy dames gotta know! -Lastly, the fro-yo. Whatever, I love a la carte pricing. Thank you for not weighing my food consumption! There are some things I'm never going to buy here. One is sushi. I just feel sure it will give me some kind of food poisoning. Another is toiletries. For all the razzle dazzle around booze and nail polish, the toiletry section is not intuitive or well marked. What a waste of a perfectly good bookstore. The prices here are double what you need to paying and the quality of what you are getting is bottom of the barrel. The second and last time I went in.. there was nobody available at the checkout. What I really don't like is all the bright lights and cameras and police thugs hanging in your face all the time. They spent all this time building the place and it looks like a dump. For the rent they pay.. i guess the skyrocketing prices are never going to go down. Though this store has a good selection of productions I have never had a good experience while shopping here. The cashiers strike me as people with little work ethic. They move slowly, as if on purpose, and have no regard for customer service whatsoever. They have no care for the products you buy and often slam them down on the counter and throw your items into the bags without any thought or plan. Buying a package of fruit and a box of soda? Put the heavy stuff on top why don't you? Clearly they do not care about their jobs. This attitude is likely exacerbated by the managers who clearly are not there to manage. Every time I have been there I can see them standing around joking around with other employees. There is one particular manager whom I do not know his name but I can only describe him as pudgy and a large wrap of dredlocks with an unkempt goatee who is always guilty of setting a poor example. On a number of occasions I have seen him being stopped by customers for help to which he will gesture in a direction and tell them to look harder. His unwillingness to help customers is matched by his overt rudeness. I once saw him direct a customer away only to tap over his friends to check out her backside. It was such an obvious and disgusting display. Despite all this, there seems to be no changes in the type of characters that play out their game they deem as 'work'. Walgreens as a corporation probably can't be bothered to have any sort of quality control. Don't shop here if you can help it. it's too over priced for the service you get. read more

This used to be my go to morning stop. I'd stop in, get a bottle of water, lunch, coffee, and head to work. If I needed to, I'd stop by their public bathroom. The other day on my commute, nature started knocking. I jumped off the bus almost before it stopped moving and rushed to Walgreens. As I headed to the bathroom a manager rudely stopped me ; "Stop! You can't go back there!." He pointed to a printout that said the bathroom was now closed from 11pm to 8am. This was around 6 in the morning. I told him it was an emergency and that I shopped there literally every weekday but he, the manager with the power to make an exception to that arbitrary rule, seemed to take pleasure in denying me. I get that there's a drug problem in the city and I'm sure that bathroom has seen some nasty stuff. But newsflash, heroin addicts don't just shoot up from 11-8, they will use your bathroom for the same purpose any time during the day. I'd understand if it was 3 in the morning, but at 6 us working stiffs are arriving. I was counting on that bathroom and a manager should have the discretion to make an exception to that rule. I managed a retail store for years and I knew when to let people use the commode. There was no good reason to turn me down. Anyway, I managed not to poop myself. Got to the 711/dunks food court near new england medical center. But lo! - the gate was down. In pure desperation I gave it a yank and thank god it wasn't locked. Long story short, barely managed to avoid having a very sh@@@y day at work, no thanks to the poor management at this walgreens. read more
