I'm concerned that Store Security is unaware of his presence while he's texting on his phone constantly! I think the Managers should ban cell phone use while doing security and get responsible employees that focus on keeping the store and its customers safe! The area has been known to have issues and this store is a great benefit for all so let's get Security Staff do their Jobs! Let me start off by saying I typically visit Roche Brothers for items I cannot get at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's - so mostly for snacks or specialty items like a Duncan Hines boxed cake - strawberry is my fave! Been coming here for years, as everyone else has pointed out, it's conveniently located in DTX. When you walk in, you can buy prepared foods and sit down in a cafe, the main grocery store is in the basement. They have an excellent cheese section, snack section - so many different chips and crackers to choose from, and a fairly decent boxed cake section. They also have a lot of frozen items and other dairy products. I have purchased produce here but not very often. It wouldn't be my first choice - they don't have too great of a selection and it seems more expensive than WFs. They have a decent sized alcohol section but it's blocked off and you have to purchase alcohol in that section - no biggie tho. They have a variety of local beer and cider, which is nice. Near the checkout, they have the prepared foods, bakery, and meat counters. The items from the bakery case look decent but I have not tried them. The checkout line can be long sometimes but usually goes pretty fast. All in all, this a convenient location with lots of items to choose from. I'll def be back! read more

I've been walking into the Downtown location of Roche Bros on and off, considering their hot breakfast buffet at $11.99/lb, as well as their individually plastic wrapped pastries set by a toaster contraption. There's Belgian waffles, quiche slices, bacon and sausages, scrambled eggs, omelettes, and tater tots. Individually wrapped breakfast sandwiches for under $4 each to boot! Very tempting. But on my November 2024 visit my goal was clear. Their seasonal pumpkin coffee cake, cause I didn't want to show up somewhere empty handed. I found it down the escalator, beyond the prepared foods and sushi, past the the pastry counter. A good price and delicious. I've already tasted it before. They even offered a half portion for smaller parties which I thought was considerate. Service when paying was super. When people say capitalism works I want to take them to Roche Bros. It's the illusion of choice. These places are usually cavernous but by some quirk of reality they have nothing you need. Yes, they have shelves and shelves of overpriced oat milk smoothies, but do they have oat milk? Sometimes? I imaging the person coming up with Roche's stock just going to the supplier website and sorting by price. Their bakery is honestly astonishing. Before Roche, I thought there wasn't a croissant on this earth I couldn't eat. But guess what? If disappointment had a flavor, it would be Roche. I'm extra down on this place because it tends to take the place of actual useful supermarkets. I'm not going to say Star Market is all that, but it has cleaning products, eggs and oat milk. I spoke with the young man who was the mgr on duty on Nov 22 at approx 1pm about a black female security guard who was staring at me with a nasty look as I was waiting in line. The managwr was blatantly dismissive of my complaint. He himself was rude. The nonvervally hostile guard continued to stare at me while the manager and I spoke. The smart-ass manager insultingly said, "It is her job to stand there." Obviously. So I took a photo of the guard and left the groceries behinh rather than paying for them and taking them with me. Roche Bros is in the spot where the long gone Filene's Basement used to be. Going there for me brought back memories of my mother dragging me along on a Saturday while she pawed through stacks of clothing looking for the right size. As a kid, I was able to tolerate that because she would say that when she was done, we would go to lunch, which for me at the time was the best part of the trip. Ah...but I digress. The first floor of Roche Bros is mainly items like a prepackaged meal for one plus other to-go items. The grocery store was downstairs, in the basement. I give them credit, they do pay homage to Filene's basement with two enlarged of photos of the crowds rummaging around looking for just the right article of clothing. The first time I went there, I just browsed their offerings. I found the store to not be logically arranged. When it was time to leave, getting out, when you're not buying anything, is complicated. I ended up asking a security guard how to get out. He opened a gate near the up escalator and told me he wasn't supposed to do that but would do it this once for me. Lesson learned. The second time I went there, in a fit of nostalgia, I wondered if they had any Hoodsies. Hoodsies, for those who don't know, are small cups of ice cream that's made by Hood, hence the name Hoodsies. I was all excited to see that they did have some, even if it's in the form of a 6 pack of them. That's okay. We had a fridge with a small freezer in our room. Hoodsies once came with small wooden spoons for each cup. That's no longer the case. So...I had to buy plastic spoons. Back to things not being logically arranged---at first I could only buy fancy plastic spoons, which weren't cheap. Then, I browsed some more and came across the cheap ones. I ask rhetorically---why can't they put them all in one spot? Paying for your groceries means getting into one long line. When you get to the head of the line you wait for an automated voice to stay something like "proceed to register number (whatever number)". At each register there isn't much room to place your items to get rung up which slows down the process. All that said, one thing I did like --- while standing in line, there are cold drinks like water, soda and juice. It made it easier to just add them to your shopping cart. I discovered that stores in Boston no longer give out plastic bags, just paper which is fine but each paper bag costs 5 cents. So...when shopping in Boston, be sure to bring along a bag with you. The best part about going? --- The Hoodsies plus the homage to Filene's basement :) read more

Deeply attached to the Downtown Crossing MBTA Station, I was surprised at how big this mostly underground grocery store goes. It really is a full grocery store, which is great for this area. Large produce section, huge bakery, frozen, fresh dairy with lots of cheese, beer and wine, lots and lots of the ready-to-eat foods. And aisles of canned and dry goods going back into the shelves areas. Can't skip the amazingly huge butchery with loads of great looking steaks! I managed to find a nice meal to take back to the apartment that was ready to go. Impressive check out management with some registers upstairs but a nicely organized queue for two dozen registers downstairs. You will not be waiting long to check out here. read more

I personally don't like this grocery shopping concept. 1st floor is the deli. To get to the grocery store you gotta take the stairs down. Odd. The prices are way more expensive than Texas prices. $8 for strawberries?! They're like $2 in Texas. I went twice for water-- a 24 pack is almost $6. In Texas you can get them for $2-3. It's crazy. Oh and in Boston they charge 5 cents for each bag. It's free in Texas. The worst is lugging the groceries back upstairs and back to your hotel or car or whatever. Parking is at a premium and not cheap. Overall I'm glad this concept does not exist in Houston. read more

Absolute dumpster fire of a grocery store. Been coming here since I started working in Downtown crossing but I actively tell my friends to avoid it. Items are CONSTANTLY mislabeled. So many things that show a 2x deal price without showing the normal unit price. Eggs, deli, and bread prices have always been obscene. Veg is constantly an empty wasteland of shelves, and they'll leave out things with expiration dates for less than 12 hours from purchase price. Their trash tier sushi sits unsold and they don't seem to value the idea of selling off 1 day items like this at discounted rates before close. It's completely normal to see a line wrapping from one end of the store to another, while 3 of their 20-something tills are actively managed. Employees are miserable, or at least I assume they are with how they treat customers. I think they have more security guards than cashiers. Absolutely pitiful place. I'd love to see some Roche Bros bigwig shareholder actually try to shop here. It's hellish and I won't be coming back. I've seen the wild and illegal food waste that happens out back and it's unethical to say the least. read more

Roche Bros gets 5 stars for it's location, but that's about it. Whenever I'm downtown if I need to pick something up, it's incredibly convenient. One of the exits is right inside the train station for those who are going home from work. It's two levels with the upstairs being a salad/hot bar and the downstairs being the rest of the grocery store. The salad bar has a lot of fresh and delicious options, but can be pretty bare if you go too late at night. It's $10/lb which is pretty pricy, but I get it when I'm in the mood to make my own salad. The grocery store itself is huge and has a great variety of products. Produce, dairy, frozen, and lots of specialty items. For those that live in the area it's a godsend because of the amount of products you can get. However, the prices are absurd. I went to get garlic, regular garlic, and it was $6/lb. For a lot of the items they charge a crazy convenience fee. I understand, but it's too much. It's always crowded so expect to wait in a very long line that is relatively efficient. You can get almost anything here, but expect to pay a lot for it. read more

(12/8-12/14/21) We usually shop here nightly during our visits to Boston, while staying at a property around the corner. They have a very nice selection of groceries and alcohol. Very clean. The prepared food section is hit or miss. Ask for a taste before purchasing. The to-go condiments are usually lacking, especially mayonnaise, on both levels. Consider putting a mayo and mustard packet in with sandwiches. After a long day of touristing, it's nice to take something hearty back to the room rather than eating at a restaurant. And the cold sandwiches are great. It's always nice to have their ham and cheese in the fridge at 3am for a snack. Overall, a very nice grocery! The checkout system is very well run. The line moves quickly. The cashiers are friendly, but a bit hit or miss as well (then, aren't we all?). Most are very friendly, others are a bit surly. I wished one of the grumpy ones a Merry Christmas as I was leaving and she replied, "Uh-huh, mrm-mrmr." I've been called worse. One point of contention, though. Every night we visited we purchased some beer (and food) and had to show id, which is fine. A bit silly since I'm 57 years old, but my id had expired during the covid lockdown and couldn't get it renewed before the trip. The TSA let me on the plane without a blink. But one of your cashier supervisors decided she would not accept it and blindly refused to listen to reason. My reasoning being the government said any state id having expired during covid is to be considered valid until further notice. Presented with this law, the short, brunette millennial with the ugly hipster white rimmed glasses just kept repeating, "Company policy states you must have a valid id to buy alcohol." I love how millennials' eyes glass over when presented with logic. Ridiculous policy. Company service over customer service. Not cool. Fix it. So, yes, I waited for my partner to catch up, she showed her id, we bought everything and left. That's some ironclad system in place there. (The cashier apologized for the supe, which says it all...) Out of six days, it was the only hitch. Every trip needs something to laugh about and someone to laugh about. She won the first award and the really drunk guy sitting next to me at the bar in the Bull & Finch who wanted to tell me every story in his hopper, in a local vernacular I couldn't understand, won the second. I made the mistake of returning to this store after having had a checkout clerk not bag several items that I paid for. Today I went in to take advantage of several items that were advertised for this location on my phone app. Several items were out of stock and additionally when I checked out the advertised deli sausages did not show the discount price. I showed the teller and the deli manager the price, within the advertised date, on the app. The manager could only say that he has been selling the items for that price all week. So either he has been selling it for the wrong price or Roche Brothers is unreliable. Also no effort was made to adjust the price. My advice is to avoid this establishment forever. read more

Roche Bros is a grocery store that is conveniently located in downtown crossing and even connects directly into the T stop. Usual selection plus some more fancy things, but prices tend to be higher than your average store. They have tons of prepared food great to grab a quick snack, lunch, or dinner. My favorite and my reason for a great review is the muffins in the bakery department. They are huge, freshly made daily, and only $2! I like the double chocolate and cinnamon. read more

I love this place and often come here for lunch for to pick up something for dinner on the way home. There's two levels to this store: the second/ground level floor has a "grab and go" kind of layout with prepackaged options like sushi and sandwiches in addition to hot and cold food bars. The food bars have a lot of options and are priced by weight ($9.49 a pound if I recall correctly). The first floor is the main grocery store part with meat, produce, baked goods, etc. This floor also has a hot food bar and a wider variety of the options found upstairs. I often get the sushi here, which is probably the best grocery store sushi I've ever had. The ingredients are fresh and reasonably priced. Given the location next to Downtown Crossing station, this store is very busy, particularly during lunch time and around 5:00-6:00 when many people are getting off work. However the lines move surprisingly quickly and there's screens telling you the next open register like TJ Maxx and Marshalls have which is helpful. Since more cashiers are on the first floor, the line here actually tends to move quicker than upstairs. read more

This is such a nice store at a convenient location in Boston. You can walk from Boston Common or Long Wharf or South Station. Next to Primark and Cafe Nero. You enter the store and then go down the staircase (not easily visible so I hope this tip helps you). They have fresh food, fresh flowers and huge collection of grocery items. Very well organized. The staff is there to help. I found them very polite and helpful. I purchased a bunch of flowers and needed a pen. There was nobody at the flower desk but another person from their staff arranged a pen for me. Prices are reasonable and in tune with most grocery stores. read more

While most of the items in the supermarket are fairly overpriced (probably due mostly to the prime DTC location), you can occasionally find some good deals. For example, I got a lot of shredded cheese here once for $2 a bag and they often have good sales on hummus. However, the lines are totally ridiculous especially between 5 and 7 pm. I have gone in a number of times and just walked right out. Also, the street level cafe is a complete RIP OFF with what they're doing with the sales tax. The MA sales tax laws on grab and go food and prepared foods are pretty complex and vague and they have interpreted them to basically tax everything you purchase at the street level cafe. You could purchase a single yogurt cup downstairs and there's no tax on it. But, if you purchase it in the street level cafe- BAM! 7% meals tax! Granola bar purchased downstairs-- no tax-- purchased in the street level cafe BAM! 7% meals tax. I didn't want to wait in the crazy line downstairs so I picked up a yogurt and some granola bars from the cafe. BAD MOVE. I am sure the DOR doesn't care because, well, just more tax for them, but a consumer rights group should really do an investigation on that street level cafe. If you need a grab and go item, go buy it at CVS to avoid paying the ridiculous sales tax. IMO, there should not be tax on food of any sort, especially stuff that's not obviously a prepared food like a CUP OF YOGURT. GRRRRRRR. read more

Houston, we may have a problem... Made three visits in the past week. Addicted? Yes. Curable? Maybe not. My first visit was a good one. Then I went crazy when I saw the cookie station. Raspberry filled shortbread come to momma! Second visit involved me grabbing a few things for dinner because I was too tired to cook. Then the third visit involved me picking up chicken and other goodies (ie a French Apple tart and more cookies). I was hosting my sister and her boyfriend over the weekend it was convenient enough for me to pop in after work and pick up a few things. I deduced that convenience will have me coming back here...either before work to grab breakfast and a sandwich for lunch (fourth visit yesterday haha) or after work to pick up items for the week or dinner fixings. Prices are okay, and the sales aren't bad. Hot bar and prepared cold foods are fresh and taste great! It's the perfect locale for a supermarket. This is the Batcave of grocery stores! I had no idea, riding down that escalator, what to expect at the bottom, and I was just amazed at the size of the place and of everything they managed to have in stock. And then I discovered the liquor section, including a vast array of wines and liquors and even the premium case. I did find it difficult to figure out the lay of the land, it's not really traditionally organized. And you do have prices that reflect being downtown in a larger city, but how much money would you spend traveling to the suburbs for cheaper prices? I'm not familiar enough with all of Boston to know how many other places at which I could do one-stop grocery shopping, but I'd certainly be satisfied here. read more

They're too busy prepping mobile orders and stocking prepared meals to ever actually get you anything from the display case. I've walked away multiple times. This type of customer last service model starts at the top, and they probably just don't give a crap cause their margins are so absurdly high. They've got people over a barrel with the location, and they're just raking it in. Another long overdue update. Often I've stopped in during the Pandemic on my runs into the office, and now post-Pandemic, I'm usually in the store before work at 9AM so it is a pretty quiet and they are stocking (to be expected). Staff are usually friendly. They have a very large, alcohol section, coolers with all kinds of micro brew beers, seltzer, etc. All these pretty pink bottles with flowers, I think are champagne or sparking wine which look very festive. To note, there is a section adjacent to the alcohol with party supplies, colorful napkins, paper plates, etc. Pricey though but at least this is a place, and the store is on the high side with prices which is typical in urban super markets, although they have their own in house brand for some items, and also another generic brand Crave, that are a bit lower. To circle back to alcohol, they do card regardless of age refusing an older gentleman who looked like a tourist, who then asked me for directions/after being refused because he did not have ID. In the mornings, they have about 2-3 cashiers but they are usually fast and efficient. There is still a pretty large grab and go selection upstairs--sandwiches, salads, desserts and water, different soda/options, etc. Full service market is downstairs so you take the escalator or elevator. Generally the store is very clean and the escalator usually is working and is not treacherous like the ones in certain MBTA stations. read more

The ground floor of this supermarket has a great salad bar and some hot foods as well and there is some limited seating inside where you can enjoy your hot food or salad bar purchases. There are also a few tables with umbrellas just outside the store as well if you prefer to dine outdoors. Take the escalator downstairs to the basement floor and you'll reach the main grocery store. There you'll find a deli, a dairy section, wine and beer, cheeses, a bakery area, meats and shelved aisles where you'll see all of their canned and packaged goods. The restrooms are also located on the basement level. The prices here are a little bit higher than you'll pay at other grocery stores farther away from the city but I am sure that it is just because of the prime location right in the heart of Downtown Boston. There are always plenty of registers open and while the lines can get rather long here they do move very fast and you won't be waiting for very much time at all. I have had their salad bar quite a few times and I absolutely love it. It is a great option for lunch. Nice variety of items on it and their salad dressings are great. read more
