I had a craving for Lambert's chicken cutlet with sauce on their sesame seed roll just like the one in Norwood. The sandwich is special because it brings back nostalgic memory. So I noticed there's one at 140 Tremont St. in Boston so I went there today. It's in the back of a liquor store. It's called Epic Marketplace and it's not Lamberts anymore. They say that they just changed the name, but they changed a lot more than the name because my friend and I both bought the same sandwich and we both got sick from it. This does not happen to me very often. I'm not a happy camper and I would definitely not recommend!!!. read more

A good deli and grocery store is located across from Boston Common. It has a deli with freshly prepared foods. Lambert's Marketplace is the only grocery store in this area so it doesn't have anything to compete against, which is a bad thing. High prices but they can get away with it. There's no reason they have to do anything because of the lack of competitors so they can also overcharge. It has some good things about it. One cool thing is the milkshake and smoothie machine. There's lots of flavors to choose from, and you see it made in front of you. Many people come here for the deli. There's a lot on the big menu. Lots of cheese. Sandwiches are okay but these are small portions. It usually has a salad bar. The selection on this isn't good so it's not recommended. Poor quality produce and it can also smell bad. The prices are very annoyingly high. Good for the fast convenience. It otherwise is only just okay. There's a good choice of organic and vegetarian friendly products. read more

This review is mainly about the salad bar. I've been coming to Lambert's for their salad bar for several years because A) they've had things that others don't usually carry; B) everything has been very fresh; and C) they had a great Greek dressing and fresh pita bread that really take the finished salad up a notch. I also highly recommended it to my coworkers because there are a lot of salad bars around and this one was notably better than most. I would have given it all 5 stars a couple of years ago. However, I noticed in the past year or so that these things have suffered so I haven't been back as often as I used to. Today I went back to give it another try... still disappointed. The salad bar looks newer, structurally, but the contents of the bins are not as fresh as they used to be. I prefer darker greens so usually grab mixed greens but it was terribly wilted and looked like it was starting to get slimy. There was also a bin of arugula (or something similar) - same problem. I ended up only using spinach, which I still had to pick around to avoid slimy leaves. There is no more avocado and the carrots & purple cabbage were really dry, as was the pita bread - I like to be able to make a little salad pouch with it, but it wouldn't hold together at all. Also, they've changed up the dressings and the new Saratoga brand Greek dressing is subpar compared to the former creamy "no name" Greek dressing. I've eaten about half of what I was able to cobble together and am already starting to feel "not so great" so I'm going to end up throwing away the rest of this $10 salad so that I don't have to worry about having "an issue" on the train home this afternoon. I don't know if there's new management, vendors, or if the salad bar just isn't a priority any longer, but I don't think I can recommend them as I used to do. Also, there are a lot of not-so-clean, sketchy-looking people (non-employees) in the store, scratching their lottery tickets, or just hanging around blocking the already-tight layout and their proximity to the open-bin salad bar is enough to be a turnoff from making a meal out of it, too. read more

I'm so excited to have found this place! I've been going to UDG in the Downtown Crossing area for my salads, but decided to try Lambert's for a change (gotta spice things up in my 9-5 routine life). The salad bar is plentiful. They don't chop your salad like they do at UDG, but you can (attempt to) do it on your own with the plastic utensils and make a game out of it. You will fail, but it'll be hilarious and make for an entertaining lunch hour. Trust me. The salad bar is $5.99/lb. and you can add on avocado and/or various proteins (chicken, eggs, etc.) all at the $5.99/lb. cost. Most places will charge $2.00+ for these items so I appreciate them keeping it at the same cost (woo...equality!). This place can get pretty busy during lunch. It seemed like their sandwich line was pretty long (note to self: try sandwich next time), which must mean they are pretty good. I'll definitely be back! read more

When I worked downtown, I used to eat here regularly. The salad bar was fresh, clean, and always well stocked. The store was spotless. But sadly, the place has gone seriously downhill. The place is filthy, the salad bar - at 12:30pm on a weekday - was depleted, with bits of food spilled everywhere. The floor hasn't been well-cleaned is what looked like years, and the walls, paint, and everything were indicative of a place that's about to close its doors. Maybe the manager or the owner will read this and refurbish the store. But until they do, It's just too gross to eat there again. read more

Boston is like my second home. I have been there so many times, yet I can still wander around like I've never seen the city before. I had a full day to myself while my girlfriend had a busy day in Boston. I picked up some things for her in Cambridge, then walked through the streets of Beacon Hill, then took a well needed rest in one of the park benches of Boston Common. It was a quarter past noon. As I sat there, watching people go by and listening to the MC play music for some event, I got hungry. Real hungry. Yelp to the rescue! Lo and behold, I was right by some market with real good reviews...sandwiches, soups, drinks...perfect. As young as I am, I don't nearly walk enough in the suburbs of Chicago. I drive to work, sit at my desk all day, and drive home to eat and sleep. I forced myself out of that bench and was well on my way to Lambert's Marketplace. I walk in to a number of thoughts..."oh cool, lots of food" "so this is where I order sandwiches...wow, lots of choices" "perfect, window seats to sit down" "what the hell should I order??" I took way too long to decide what to get, but finally got myself a #4 Summer Street sandwich. The sound of horseradish and roast beef was PERFECT. I added a cup of clam chowder and a drink to that and paid my dues. $9 dollars and something...not bad at all for a quality sandwich! This was the best part though...eating the downright delicious and wholesome sandwich and staring out the window. I got to watch someone's hat fly off and another person running after it, I got to watch two cars almost get in an accident, I got to watch endless people do their thing. This is the kind of city deli that I grew up with, and I'm thrilled that a great one exists right on Tremont Street. I was walking along Boston Common this morning when I noticed this place across the street. I went in to see what they had and I liked what I saw. Very nice deli area, some delicious looking bakery items and a small breakfast bar filled with bacon, home fries, breakfast sandwiches and muffins to name just a few things. I could tell by the stickers on the glass overhead that they had hanging over the bar that they have a salad bar later in the day. So I will definitely be back next time in the afternoon since I love salad bars and they are so hard to come across. I love lamberts. When I want soup, they have a pretty decent selection. When I want a sandwich, I go for the Mass Ave (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc). They weight the meat out and it's a fairly meaty sammich for the money. I usually can eat half a sandwich and be satisfied. Also, if I ask for extra pickle spears they will hook a girl up. This place has a collection of idiots! I'm sitting in line at the sign that says, "line starts here" waiting for about 5 minutes, which is cool... Two guys walk in and go to the end area or the deli and some person stocking starts taking their orders. Then some old dude working for the fabulous MBTA comes in and stands beside me, not behind me. Another guy behind the deli looks at me and says, "are you all set?" I say no, I am still waiting and he then goes to the guy next to me and says the same thing and the guy starts ordering... I said to the guy who works there, "hey, really?" That does nothing and he keeps helping the other guy. I ordered from here through Ubereats because I had heard that their sandwiches were really good. I ordered the "Park Street Sub Roll" and chicken noodle soup and a bag of lay's chips. The soup had a bitter and sour aftertaste, I barely ate it. The sandwich description said that the sandwich had Turkey, Bacon, Tomato, Lettuce, Mayo and Cheddar Cheese on it. I requested to have the tomato removed because I'm allergic and when I got my sandwich, it had tomato on it and no bacon. The sandwich was overloaded with Turkey and was very dry. I most likely won't order from this place again. If I do, I will go in person to MAKE SURE they assemble my sandwich correctly. The highlight of my meal was the Lay's chips, unfortunately. read more

I popped in here before my tour of Boston for some fuel for the journey. The place seems to be divided into three sections - the grocery, the salad bar, and the deli. I didn't venture into the grocery, so I can't say much about it other than the fruits and vegetables looked colorful and fresh. The layout was a bit strange, as one had to muscle around the hordes surrounding the salad bar to get in line for the deli. Look up. There are about 20 different specialty sandwich selections on the upper wall, each named for a different street in Boston. I'm sure this is very cool if you're a local, but for everyone else, just quickly skim and zero in on those ingredients that interest you. And do it fast - the service is brisk and the line moves quickly! I chose the Winter Street sandwich - turkey, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, and honey mustard - and was very pleased by it. They use Boar's Head meats in their sandwiches and they put a LOT in each - so bring a healthy appetite. If I hadn't been in a hurry, I would've opted to each my sandwich at one of the tables next to the windows overlooking Boston Common. I needed a place to grab a quick bite to eat before seeing a movie at Boston Common last night, and so my friend and I went to Lambert's. I was amazed when I walked in -- a deli counter plus several aisles of fresh produce, gourmet condiments, and dry good necessities. I didn't know such a thing could be found in an area otherwise dominated by fast food chains. I got the "Scully" [sic] Square sandwich on sourdough, which consists of ham, turkey, onions, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard. Oh my god, the sandwich was, like, bigger than my face. But I ate the whole thing. And a pickle. The produce section did look slightly sketchy, with a few fruit flies. Some things, like cherries, were way past their prime. But, it's summer time and the doors were open, so you can hardly blame the flies for seeking out such tasty treats. I found an absolutely perfect, unblemished, ripe red plum and almost cried when I dropped it on the ground later before I could eat the last few bites. Turns out that "nice" doesn't automatically go along with "thoughtful." Not that this is a bad thing. A few months ago it was International Women's Day, and I slipped out to buy bouquets of tulips for the women in my office. I don't remember the specifics, but I think I had $50 for 12 bouquets and I'd seen them advertised the day before for $4. Of course they were now $5. Negotiations ensued, and he ended up offering to redistribute the flowers in 10 bouquets to make 12, making us both happy. Today I stopped by to buy a fruit salad (about a pint, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapes & a lone slice of strawberry - $2.75). A swarthy man appeared out of the melee brandishing a bag. Salad/money transaction, during which he barked "pick you up at four" out of the side of his mouth to a coworker. I turned to go, and I heard it again. "Pick you up at four! Pick you up at four!" increasingly insistent. I turned, and there he was, looking exasperatedly at me and jabbing his finger at a plastic cup filled with plastic forks. I was in Boston for the day and looking for a local place to eat and kind of ran into this place by accident. It was not very busy when I went (11:30 on a Thursday) so I didn't experience the lunchtime rush. They've got tons of sandwiches you can choose from or you can make your own. The sandwiches are HUGE and I only ended up eating half. I am always a fan of Boar's Head deli meat so this place didn't disappoint. I got the Winterfest, which was pretty simple but delicious! I lived in Downtown Crossing for 2 years and never knew this place existed, but I finally went and it was really good. The grocery selection is impressive, but I went for the sandwiches and they did not disappoint. The selection is huge, a bit overwhelming to be honest. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out which one to order. I ended up getting the Franklin Street (turkey, lettuce, tomato, spicy mustard, hot peppers) and it was really, really good! Great bread too. The slice the meat right there in front of you and give you a generous portion. the only downside was the pickle, it was a little too mushy for my tastes. Finally, it was about 30% cheaper than Sam LaGrassa's (my other favorite sandwich place), so that's a big plus. I will definitely be back there again very soon. read more

The only thing I ever purchase at Lambert's is the #1 Mass Ave (turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, served hot), so I can't vouch for other items there but, damn, is that a good sandwich: their turkey is piled high, the stuffing warm and the cranberries add just enough bite to this carbohydrate-laden missile. Call me their biggest trypto-phan. Other than the sandwich, Lambert's seems to have decent produce and other deli/convenience items for prices not-entirely-unreasonable for downtown. Ok I have to say the place has turned itself around and the convenience factor also plays a part in its "allure".. I would recommend this place as a quick lunch spot. If you're by yourself or with non fussy(!!) you're-not-trying-to-impress people, I would stop in if you're by downtown looking for a sandwich or salad to keep your energy levels up to dodge the many of seriously sketchy-sketchy characters in this area. OK so the salad bar isn't mind blowing or award winning by any means but it is decent. I don't really know about the meat quality they put out there (I doubt it's all natural or anything you'd normally buy for yourself) so I tend to not pile that on but they do offer sliced avocado, boiled eggs, feta cheeses, spring muslin mix (sounds like my go-to right there) and the price per pound is very reasonable compared to the other city salad bars. The lines to get sandwiches/subs are always long around lunch time so I have to imagine they do a good job or there are a lot of people that value the convenient location and put up with the rest. They do offer Boars Head meat which is delicious. The whole fruit selection is always hit or miss which is surprising as the market's reputation rests on its fresh market selection. Some days I pick up fresh crisp apples other days I pick up a mealy apple among the bruised selection. You'd do better to pick up your fruit at Whole Foods or Shaws or a sidewalk fruit stand. They are more consciousness of the fresh factor in this regard. One last thing to note is their snack selection has improved. They carry a variety of chips and nutrition bars. Many of their chips and such are in the single serving sized options which is nice as I always find it annoying when you're forced to buy a family sized anything when all you really wanted was one. A good variety of juices, sodas, and beverages to satisfy your thirst needs. So all in all it's Ok if your comparing it to the selection of places around it. If you are coming from NYC and are expecting a real deli or you are a true foodie, then don't bother as you'll be disappointed despite the improvements. read more

Easy to access grocery in the Downtown Boston...not many of these in the area (unless you consider CVS a grocery). Coming from the South, I have to admit that not having a car was one of the most inconvenient things I've ever had to deal with. But, Lamber's made it possible, by giving me a highly convenient place to go grab simple items for sandwiches (Boar's Head! Yum!), milk and cereal, and items for salad (they have a salad bar, and often have fairly fresh veggies). Oh, and they take LevelUp!!! read more

Some talk the talk while some walk the walk. Unlike Subway and Quiznos which keep talking about putting more meat in their sandwiches, Lamberts does actually put a lot of meat in their subs. All the deli meat they use is from Boar Head and so far I like every single sub that I have had there. They do have a salad bar and a big section for fruits and veggies. So delis tend to send me into fits - too much choice, too many options, my brain freezes and tends to shut down completely. Frankly, it's embarrassing. So kudos to Lambert's for having a nicely categorized menu hanging over the deli area of differentlly combined sandwiches, all of varying degrees of enticement. But even then there might be too many - at least 25 by my count, probably more. I always feel like I'm going to make the wrong choice, and that the sandwich just above, or just next to, the one I ordered would have been superior. Oh, the sundry perils of democracy - you were so right, de Toqueville. Anyway, Lambert's succeeds, if at all, by virtue of being really the only game in town if you want a quick sandwich before an early evening movie at the Boston Common. Otherwise, there are at least a dozen other, vastly superior quick lunch spots within shooting distance that I would hit first if I were down here at noonish (the Falafel King demands homage!). Decent marketplace right across the street from Boston Common. They have a fresh deli where you can get your sandwich fresh made to order and cheese options galore, as well as a little seating area right in the front of window of the restaurant so you can look out into the streets. Additionally, there is small market inside the store as well for a few pickup items and drinks as well. There is a salad bar running through the marketplace and it has poor selections and the items in the trays are just exposed to the air and people walking in and out the store constantly. "Lambert's Marketplace, around since the ice age, and still have not learned how to make a sandwich properly." Is what their sign should say in order to forewarn their unsuspecting clientele that they have absolutely no idea what to do with their high quality ingredients. Yes! I am a sucker for quality and I love Boar's Head meats and cheeses. In fact, being one of the only deli's I'm aware of in Boston that serve Boar's Head, that's how they lured me in. I was excited. They had a very generous selection on the menu and even a salad bar that appeared to be fresh. They also had soup, and other snacks. I decided not to complicate things too much and asked for ham, salami and provolone with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and oil and vinegar on a white sub roll. The result can be summarized in two major criticisms. Criticism # 1. If you are going to serve quality cold cuts at your deli, than why dilute the taste of these expensive products with the residual flavors of other meats and cheeses on the slicer? I saw what looked like a whole layer of scum on the blade. Besides being an issue of taste, not cleaning the slicer is also extremely unsanitary. This is the equivalent of taking a perfectly good 200 dollar kobe steak, and using it to clean a sidewalk before serving it. One word could sum up the experience: Disgusting. Criticism # 2. We have already established my love affair with quality cold cuts. I'm sure most people will agree. However, just because I like it does not mean you have to combine all the meat and cheese I asked for into a giant sausage and put it in between the garnish. Sandwiches do not work that way. When you eat one, you want to be able to blend the flavors of all the components in your mouth, while at the same time, have the ability to distinguish between the various ingredients as you're eating them. When you clump them up like that , you know what it tastes like? a giant, incomprehensible heap of meat and cheese. I barely even tasted anything else. What's worse, I couldn't even distinguish what was what. I can slap together a sandwich with feces and motor oil, and it would have the same taste. Garbage served on a platter made of gold and encrusted in jewels is still garbage. You might very well have the financial capacity to serve quality ingredients, but if you don't know how to handle them you should just save yourself the trouble and use lesser known, tasteless brands. My eyes are always way bigger than my stomach at Lambert's. It's a great place to get some lunch and a snack or two. I'm not a huge deli-person, but the Boar's Head is good, obviously. Wouldn't really recommend the breakfast sandwiches though, plenty of places in DTX that do them better. Final note: the dessert case is full of ridiculous temptations. I strongly recommend the chocolate + peanut butter whoopie pies. I dare you to finish one. It took me two days to eat half. Last thing: They do take credit, but I think there is a $10 min. read more
