NOPE. I had been in here quite a few times before because it's just down the block from Rod Dee. The most recent time will definitely be the last, though, because they wouldn't let me buy a freaking bottle of wine. I'm 29. My driver's license is completely legit, not expired, etc. I have never previously been refused an alcohol sale here, or anywhere else, for that matter. When I went up to the register, one of the guys working at the counter instructed me to come around to the side where he interrogated me like he would for a fake ID: "how old are you?" "when's your birthday?" "what's your address?" Then he asked if I had another ID, so I handed him my ID from grad school (also has a photo), and showed him my credit cards. He asked to see my passport. I told him that like most people, I don't normally carry around my passport, and he responded that I needed a "stronger" ID than my license. Around then, another customer who had been hanging around, shooting the shit with the other counter guy started yelling at me, saying "dude, just give it up and go somewhere else, you're holding up the line!" Note: I was not holding up the line at all, the other counter guy was continuing to ring up customers on the one cash register. I repeat: NOPE. read more

So this is a great little convenience store that apparently sells things other than beer. I know this because I see it for about 2 seconds before my tunnel vision sets in and I'm in the next room worshipping at the altar of beer these guys have built over the last year or so. I have been coming to this store since I first moved to Boston 12 years ago, and at one point it was just a convenient place to grab a 6 or 12 pack instead of having to get in a car, bus, train. Nothing special. Then... it happened. They hired beer geeks, and now they have one of the best selections in the area hands down. Their staff (for the most part) is very knowledgeable and willing to help you find a beer that suits your palate. Don't know what you like? Well, if you've got a few minutes, several of them will gladly tell you all about whatever you like. Looking for something rare? If they don't have it, they'll not only track it down, they'll call you when it gets there and set it aside for you. For the most part, the prices on bottles are better than average, and there are plenty of downright steals to be had... and they gladly point those out. They are also doing tastings now, which has definitely prompted a few Thursday or Friday night visits from me. The wine selection is equally impressive, and though it's tough for them to compete against TJs in the price dept, it's definitely reasonable. For those of us inclined towards spirits, they have an impressive selection of bourbons and scotches, and a wide variety of small batch boozes across the spectrum. I've loved this place since I moved here, and it's only become better with the addition of an excellent craft beer selection and top notch/friendly staff. read more

Has pretty much everything you could ever want -- beers, champagne, wine, cheese, milk, bread, salsa, flour, sugar, honey, hot sauce, scratch tickets. Located on the far west side of Coolidge Corner, Bay State Foods is primarily a liquor store with a hearty selection of craft beer, cider, and other offerings. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and do their best to keep current with trends in beer, liquor, and wine. I mostly go there for beer, and the variety is quite apparent. With breweries from around New England, the U.S., and even a fair amount from Europe, Bay State offers a little of everything. The hidden gem may be right out in the open, as they display the newest and rarest items right on top of the cider fridge next to the register. If there's something you're interested in but don't see, they are more than willing to put in an order. They value repeat business and in getting to know them, I've never been dissatisfied with a recommendation. I would particularly recommend visiting on Thursdays, which is when Bay State arrange for demonstrations and tastings. read more

This place may be more recognizable from the actual sign on their building: LIQUORS FOODS. yes, that is what i thought the actual name of the shop was, for oh...about 4 years. BF gets off well because it's uber convenient and offers everything from bleach to powerbars to maker's mark and santa margherita. you can also recharge your charlie card here AND no one will laugh at you when you place a handful of pennies and nickels on the counter and say "i would like 1.35 on my card please." seriously, a great place to get rid of loose change. staff is generally friendly and generously supplies liquor boxes to you if you're moving. some of the food items are overpriced because they know they can get away with it and some are a little sketch (like they've been there too long or perhaps low shelf items have made friends with mice. i have no proof, i'm just saying) read more

Conveniently placed right down the corner, this place is seriously superb. I've gotten some fantastic wine deals; they have many "2 for $20"s that rival even the Trader Joes selection. My favorite deal was a 2006 LaPlaya Caret for $11. Amazingly cheap. Their beer/spirits selection is decent as well, and then they have a whole mess of mini-aisles dedicated to snacks, paper goods, and refrigeratables. Just around the corner from me and very convenient. But after today I will never shop there again. Had 3 $20 in my wallet. Gave the owner a $20 for my lottery numbers. That transaction was fine. I then gave him 2 $20s for my $26.99 bottle of liquor. He gave me $3 back. I told him he owed me a $10. No he insisted. We went back and forth and he kept smiling at me and kept pushing my purchase towards me and shooing me away. I never got my $10 and I think he knew exactly what he was doing. I can't count how many times I've come back from a huge group-effort shopping trip with the roommates, only to unload all our groceries and realize, dad gummit, we forgot paper towels! Also, crap, I'm out of cigarettes, I need to do my laundry, and I wouldn't mind a beer after all this running around. Bay State seems to stock everything you need when you're just "running out to get something". Apart from usual convenience-store-type items, Bay State also keeps a pretty decent selection of booze for a packie: from cases of High Life to Sam Adams chocolate bock; from Barefoot Bubbly to Veuve Clicquot yellow label, they've got you covered, no matter what your budget. Also, they're open until eleven most nights, which gives 'em a leg up on just about any other liquor-esque store within walking distance of Coolidge Corner. A star off for the fact that the front of the store is organized a little haphazardly with aisles in awkward places (do we line up toward the back, or toward the side? Inquiring minds want to know!), but hell, as long as you know that you've got your Food and Liquor somewhere in the building, you're golden. read more

I'm a huge fan of Baystate Foods...or Liquors and Foods as most people I know fondly refer to it. L&F is one of the main reasons I refuse to move out of my apartment. I love being so close. There's been many times where I've been cooking and realized that I forgot an ingredient or screwed something up. Rather than schlepping myself back to the grocery store, L&F pretty much has everything! Sure, some of it is over-priced, but I actually find most of it to be pretty reasonable. They have a really big liquor selection, making them a super great neighbor. I'm also in here a lot to use the ATM and recharge my Charlie Card. The guys who work at L&F are soo friendly and quick. I think L&F closes at 11, which I guess is better than most places in the area, but it would be AMAZING if it were open 24 hours a day! read more

Love that this place is down the street, it is a beer connoisseurs mecca! They have a lot of different kinds of IPAs, Belgians, Ales, whatever tickles your fancy. They also are one of the only places nearby which will sell you a Charliecard. I come by here a few times a week; they constantly change up what they have and they are always one of the first to have new beers. If you want to know if your beer is in stock, give em a ring, these guys know their shit. They also sell they same things as a 7/11 so if you need non-alcohol related things, chances are they have that too read more

I have been shopping here for years. The family who currently owns the business seemed nice. The wife especially has always been friendly. However, today was the second time I was overcharged. The first time I requested a refund; the husband acted sheepishly and attempted to apologize. Today, the grandfather overcharged me in the same manner - $1 extra for each of two bottles of wine. Now I wonder if they had been overcharging me before I noticed. They don't have a scanning system. Even with all the money they spent on recent renovations, they have an antiquated register system. All purchases are rung up by hand, so it's easy to add a dollar onto a purchase like mine. Beware of this place. Check your receipts. read more

Never wrote a review on any kind of application before but this time I really need to say something. Had the most insulting experience here. I wanted to buy some wrapping paper here and showed him my driver's license. He took it and asked where my apartment is and shit, which is fine cuz I understand that some guys got face blindness to Asian. But what insulted me is he was trying to bluff me when he asked my about birthday. He was giving me a suggestive interrogation like a police does. He was like "so u r born on 94, what date?' But clearly it is said on my ID that I was born on 93. And when I told him the date he confirmed the question, '94 right?' And then I realized he was trying to throw a leading question and he did that on purpose. This guy must dreamed about being police officer. But ironically I have been there like four times last month and he asked my apartment number every single time. I'm really disappointed! This place had a really great selection. I'm originally from Colorado and have a vertical drivers' license. I turned 21 this August here in MA and got my license expiration date extended for a year through the Colorado DMV -- I can't travel home and get a new one in person, obviously, because of the pandemic. The cashier turned me away, despite me pointing out that my license had a sticker on it saying that it was officially extended for a year. Dear Mr. Cashier, I promise that no one is stupid enough to purchase a vertical fake ID. He even asked me if I had a passport as if I casually carry around a passport while I'm walking through my neighborhood. I've never had an issue with the expiration anywhere else in Massachusetts, so I was very surprised that they wouldn't take it. Really upset and sad, but I see that other customers have had similar experiences with their IDs too. read more

This is where I go when I'm too lazy to haul my ass to an actual liquor store. They have a limited selection of beer but if you're lazy like me, it'll suffice. They also have some wines and the regular Bacardi and Jack. So basically everything. The non-alcoholic stuff is overpriced as Erin G. stated. And hell yeah, they can get away with it. Quick service and convenient, they even carry birthday candles. I figured that last time I bought a cake for a friend and forgot candles (duh?!). Quick run to BF and I had 'em. Probably the most unassuming place on Earth, but don't be fooled. The beer selection is top notch, with very obscure beers popping up all the time. They seem to be the leader in acquiring new brews, and they definitely take pride in supporting local brewers. On top of that the grocery side of the store is stocked to the brim with way more than you'd find at a 7-11 or the likes. There is tangible passion and a great deal of thought put into managing the stock, something I never thought I'd see in a convenience store. read more

The grocery items are limited, expensive and I wouldn't be surprised to find a few expired items, but still an overall nice place to pick up beer and wine. read more

It official! This store is beacon street's best kept secret. Their not flashy, their extremely reasonably priced, and they carry a wide variety of craft beers, wines and spirits. The staff never gets in your face, everytime I stroll in their I find new products like BAKON vodka( btw, unbelievable in a bloddy mary) or their 75+ bottles of 22oz craft beers, this store is Legit! Some of their prices are cheaper then Blanchards! Can't believe it. This place has the cat litter I like, the air freshener I like, and then basically every alcohol I could ever want or need. And they are open late. This place was being remodeled when I moved to the area and now has giant coolers along two of the walls. Fantastic selection of beers and can even find some of the rarer bottles. Some issues with everything not being priced, but think that is still a symptom of the recent remodel. read more

Solid selection of local and west coast beers for sure. Just be careful, sometimes beers that are after the "best by" date are pushed to the front. Specifically some of the west coast beers (i.e., Stone). Other than that, decent prices and helpful staff make this a great place to pick up beers if in the area. read more
