Honestly, it is the cheapest liquor store in the neighborhood, and the guys who work there are seriously the nicest. They are willing to go look out back for things that aren't on the shelves. When I went and got two 40ozs and a nip of brandy the other day (YES I am pure class) he individually bagged each 40, put them in a paper bag, then in a plastic bag and then PLACED THE NIP OUTSIDE ON THE COUNTER. Hurley's is a great local store, staffed with friendly and knowledgeable folks. I've been shopping there for over 6 years and they are a key part of why I like my neighborhood so much. The selection is pretty limited, but you may be able to tell that just from looking at how small the place is. They have a sale rack on the side where you can sometimes get a really good price, but what's in that rack rotates, and it's not always worth it. It's not really a place you can browse, though, and somehow I've always gotten the impression that whoever is working the desk wants me out of there as soon as is humanly possible. I'm sure it's great if you live very close by and are desperate for someone to deliver liquor, but this is Commonwealth Ave, and I'm happy going a few stops in either direction on the T. read more

There's always a bunch of different cases on sale real cheap. Sometimes it's Thailand's finest, Sing Ha. Sometimes it's the seasonal Bah Humbug Winter Ale. If you're broke or having a party, it's the best place to buy a ton of cheap beer that isn't Keystone Light. They have that too if you want it. They do Kegs and stuff too. OK, I get that this isn't the place to come if you want to browse a large selection of wine, but that doesn't mean that the shop owners should be patronizing and try to rush me out of the store. I came in earlier today looking for a bottle of wine, and while I knew not to expect anything fancy from a small corner store, I was looking for something mid-range. I was the only one in the store, and I was comparing a couple of different options, when the guy working at the desk started trying to help me pick out other bottles. I told him I was just browsing and didn't need any help. After about 30 seconds, he started up again, trying to "help me" in a really condescending tone. When I reminded him I was fine, he literally walked over, picked a bottle at random, and set it on the counter, clearly indicating he wanted me to buy it and leave his store. The whole thing stunned me so much that I didn't really know how to continue saying that I didn't want that bottle and I didn't need his help. Buying it was the only way I could see out of the situation. I left with a REALLY sour taste in my mouth -- not only from the shitty bottle of wine but also from the micromanage-y and condescending "customer service." read more

Have I seriously not reviewed Hurley's yet? I love these guys. The owners/managers are great, they know who to card and who not to (I think it has to do with what is being purchased - minors don't buy a single bottle of $20 wine, c'mon). They're also really nice if a mistake is made (they accidentally swiped my card twice and it was fixed in two days after a simple phone call). Hurley's is an excellent place to go if you are having a party for college aged guests. I recently purchased a 30 rack of Genny Light there for around 11 dollars. I have purchased 30 racks of Miller Lite and Bud Light there for around 14. This place is way cheap if you buy in bulk, but around average for 6 or 12 packs. This is definitely an excellent place to go if you need to entertain on a budget. read more

Solid selection and good prices for such a tiny place. Seemed like they had basically the full Sam Adams range in cold sixers, plus some comparable middies and of course all the usual selection from the big brewers. Not much in the way of craft beer or fine wine, but for how small the place is it is pretty good. Friendly cashier as well. read more

hooray, hoorah, huzzah, they deliver! first called on the phone, had a very nice chat with the dude running the joint (presumably) since he spoke of the place personally and with great breadth of time span. he helped me to get the most out of the limited delivery menu (which is hosted on foodler) while i was online and on the phone with him. overall, a very pleasant and congenial first impression. off to order! the foodler menu structure is different, but a snap to learn, never having used them before. editing my order, adding notes, etc, was cake. it costs more to get delivery, but, well, it costs more to deliver stuff, duh. apparently, once an order is placed, you can call the store and add/change it in order to get items not on the foodler menu. shweet! the estimated time of arrival was this moment, 5:30 pm. the actual time of arrival was 15 minutes ago, so they beat their own time estimate, with a quick, courteous delivery dude. overall, a very very good first experience with these two companies, which would never have happened if i hadn't been layed up coming out of the hospital. they may not be classy, but these are class act operations. :) read more

I live right around the corner, and I am in Hurley's every other night or so (I hope that doesn't make me an alcoholic.) I really enjoy the guys who work in there, but not necessarily because they're nice, though they are. They definitely don't take any bullshit though. The store is small, so they don't have the most vast selection, but what they do have is delicious. They have great deals on beer, wine, and liquor (ideal for poor college kids; at times I suspect some of the really good deals are so good because the beer is expired.) Either way, you get what you pay for when you buy the $5 brown bag mystery six pack. Prices are comparable with or better than any other liquor store in the Allston/Brighton area. I locked myself out of my apartment one night when I was new in town without my phone or wallet and they let me use their store as a command center until I got in touch with a locksmith. They have a hilarious stock-pile of hundreds of confiscated fake ID's, some of which are on the wall, and they run a police radio in there for some reason. read more

I had a good impression of this place until I bought one of the mug/beer sets they had on special today. The beer was 4 months expired. That's really despicable. Special shouldn't mean "trying to move expired beer." It's one thing when it's coming up on it's expiration date, another altogether when it's well past it. Go to BLM down the block. Their prices are more or less comparable, and they have much more integrity in their business practices. read more
