I live around the corner and visit here when I just need a couple of things and don't want to deal with Whole Foods crowd. I would consider this an average convenience store. They have an ok selection of snack food for the size as well as the essentials (milk, bread, etc). I do get annoyed that there are no prices on these items. It's also priced much higher than expected, and it's annoying to find out when you check out. It's inexcusable really. I usually don't buy a lot, but somehow always end up spending at least $25 on 4 items. They do have a very good alcohol selection as well as cocktail ingredients. However, it is all very overpriced. They do have prices on these interestingly enough. The bottom shelf whiskies are a few dollars higher than expected (23.99 vs 20.99 for four roses) but what gets me are bottles of Buffalo trace (normally a $30 bottle) marked to $65 or Weller special reserve (a retail $27 bottle) being sold at literally $100. Blantons is $200 (retails 69.99 and I can find $110 on the secondary market). It's a bit ridiculous. The beer prices are also high for the area. I don't drink wine so I can't really comment on the selection or prices (sorry!). I can also verify that the staff are rarely wearing masks on any of my visits despite the mandate and a sign being in the door a mask is required. They don't have a counter barrier that would make this slightly permissible, and least that I've noticed. Depends on who is working and they seem to have gotten slightly better about this. Overall, it's a ok stop for a couple of quick items and some standard liquors as prices are comparable, or for that midnight hankering for ice cream. It's not the most friendly environment, but it's at least well kept. But there's not really anything here that warrants going out of your way for this pricey visit. read more

Chansky's has a great selection of alcohol including beer, wine, seltzers and liquor. The prices for these items aren't bad, about what you would escape from a small liquor store. On the other hand, any food/grocery items are extremely expensive. Moreover, the prices are not marked anywhere and so the price is not known until checkout. For this reason, I recommend not buying non-alcohol items here. read more

The Massachusetts Item Pricing Law requires: Food stores, or retailers with food departments, that do not use price scanners must individually price each item in addition to displaying the price on the shelves. Very sad to see this place under new management. Completely lacking in the charm it had before the renovations. There are no price tags on anything; you don't know your total until they check you out. And everything is expensive. Like, more expensive than convenience-store-expensive. Last night I went in to pick something up for dinner. They had buns but no hot dogs, and hummus but no pita bread. They used to have actual produce in the store, now it's all frozen dinners and snacks. The booze selection is great, but it was fine before. There was no need to turn the dais into an exclusive wine and Tostidos section. The rest of the store is squished and claustrophobic. I miss you, Old Chansky. Please come back. read more

Yep! I was on the hunt for Cookie Dough Café and I've found it! (edible cookie dough/ cookiedoughcafe.com). This is a big deal to me because of course it's only sold at like 4 places out here in Boston. I got the monster kind with M&M's, PB and oats. SOOO damn good, 1 pint is $8.29- and yes I think it's worth it. I will pay any amount of money for good food, liquor and sweets. Other notes: Staff is fun and friendly! Pricey. Living right across the street, I am almost sad I do not feel I can give this place the same high rating others users do. But then again, I have never been one to follow the crowd. This is a nice convenience store, it does have a lot of basics, like the time I needed band-aids and the pharmacies next door were inexplicably closed at 7:00 PM. They have some food but the time I needed fresh garlic they had none (they did have the kind in oil). I have only bought a 6-pack of beer here once. While I can not say a lot of good for this place, I can not say anything too bad either. It's just OK. Probably will suit the needs of most college students and young professionals that live in the area. I will miss it when I move to my new place and want a soda at 10 PM. He didn't realize that my boyfriend was there, and when he saw him, immediately started apologizing to him. He didn't once apologize to me, but continuously apologized to my boyfriend. Chansky's amuses me. While being close to my apartment, and having decent beer prices, other than that they are fairly useless. Their wine selection sucks, and their actual groceries are overpriced. Basically go here for beer and nothing else. Humorous story here as well. I was opening a cooler to grab a twelve pack of beer and a six pack of Twisted Teas perched precariously on the top shelf slipped and landed, shattering, a quarter of an inch from my foot. Probably would have hit me in the head too if I'm not quick like that. While this doesn't change my opinion of the store honestly, watch out when you are opening up their beer coolers. Considering this and Gimbel's are the two closest places that sell beer to me, and Gimbel's is a bit overpriced, I definitely still shop at Chansky's... just don't buy anything but beer here. read more

I placed an order for pickup from their website; I was charged maybe 10 minutes after placing the order. After waiting for a few hours, I decided to call to check on the status of the order because I never got another email or call. The first time I called, the woman who answered just said "hi" and hung up. I called back and started trying to ask about the order, but she didn't know what I was talking about, seemed to not know that people could place orders on their website, and told me to call back in 10-15 minutes. After calling back, the woman told to me to place the order on drizly despite me having already placed it on THEIR website and my card was already charged. She then hung up abruptly. She called back after 5 minutes to let me know I should call back in another 10-15 minutes when her manager gets in. At this point, I walked over to the store and was finally told that the items were just unavailable. Apparently no one at this store could have bothered to just check the inventory or let me know it was unavailable during the first phone call. Rate this store zero stars, but the one star is because it's close to a lot of other corner stores with cheaper prices. Also, they charge you a fee if you pay via credit card. Chansky's is great. You need it, they likely have it. And the people behind the counter have memories like elephants. They will remember your face, the randomata you purchase, and everything else. Pretty amazing considering it is a convenience store. Compared to a 7-11, Chansky's is a bit more pricey, but pricey for a convenience store means you just bought a week's worth of munchies and toiletries for $15 instead of 7-11's $10. When I moved from Allston to Brighton, Chansky's replaced the Linden Superette's role as corner store in my life. While Chansky's lacks a cat, the crazy Ali jokes and stories, late night hours, and drunks at 1 am, and does not have a porn collection as large and mildy disturbing as the Superette's, it still has its own charm. The plus side's are the cool and fun staff, beer and wine. I might add that the wine selection is decent for a place of its size, to expect anything more would be absurd. It has 40's!! It also has tator tots..nom nom nom! The best part though is the awesome staff. Back a few months ago, they were tyring to sell of the remaining supply of BooKoo, which is this crazy intense energy drink (wakes your ass up, and makes you so focused you want to kill anything around you that is not doing work; and then ends with an unbelievable crash at about 5pm). Since they were only selling it for $1 i started getting it, and after a while one of the guy's there kept making jokes about my Bookoo habit. One downside is that it is only open to 11pm, so it cannot help you with your late night stumbling home from the bar i need a microwave burrito or hot pockets moments... but maybe that is a good thing for me? But none the less that means you do not get those late night drunk encounters that the Superette provides. My only lament, is that they do not sell english muffins! wtf! Chansky's is a Sutherland Rd establishment. I lived across the street on Comm Ave as a junior at BC, and let me tell you that my year would have been different if it hadn't been for Chansky's. This is for four reasons, the first being that it is so conveniently located! That neck of the woods in Brighton is heavily dependent on small convenience stores. Why go all the way to Shaw's or Trader Joe's when I can walk across the street for my milk, cheese, and eggs? What really sets Chansky's apart from the competition is that, hello, they serve beer and wine, which is the second reason it had a positive impact on my quality of life that year. Oh, and who can forget the Andre we used for mimosas and bellinis at our Sunday morning brunches? Speaking of nostalgia, my first beer purchase, a six-pack of Magic Hat #9, came frosty cold out of their fridge the morning of my 21st birthday. My only wish is that they had had a license to sell harder stuff... The third reason why my heart still leaps when I'm in the neighborhood would have to be the great guys who work there. Generally of the scruffy Allston / Brighton variety, these guys are really friendly and great to their regulars. Over a year after I moved out of the neighborhood, I ran into a couple of the guys en route to a friend's place. Not only did they remember me, but they were super friendly; we ended up having a beer on a stoop. They are so beloved in the neighborhood that they are often invited to parties. The fourth reason Chansky's had a big impact on me when I lived close to it would be that it took all of my money. You pay for the convenience and cool staff. I live about a block away from Chansky's and have been happily going there since I moved in this summer. My main reason for going: drinks! They've got a pretty decent beer and wine selection and it's fairly priced. Since they're open until 11 on weekdays, I'd say its really convenient for spur of the moment parties or if you just want a casual drink at home. They also sell T passes/Charlie cards, which is pretty clutch since there's no MBTA booths nearby. I have bought emergency groceries there, but they are pretty expensive. However, given my experience with the recent blizzard and hurricane Sandy, one will shell out for cookies and frozen meals if need be. read more

I do love chansky's. I've been in the neighborhood for a year and unfortunately there's nothing easy to get to besides chansky's unless you want to walk more than 5 mins one way, and lets face it, when you live across the street from here why would you? I never used to get anything here but beer and wine when I first moved here, but now i'll stop in for my ice coffee in the morning and I love it! One negative is that they only have one size for this! Some prices are the same as the grocery store, like some chips, some prices are double, like for deodorant, so watch out what you get here. They make there own bottled soda, which I love! They have root beer, cream soda, rickey's lime, orange soda, and some more! These are really good and if you get the 4 pack they're $1 a piece! read more

Not gonna lie, I was kinda excited to claim Chansky's as my new corner store since I moved to the area just a couple weeks ago. I've been here before since friends live in the neighborhood and I've always liked the place. Sure, they are a bit overpriced - but really, aren't all small markets a bit pricey? They've got just about everything I'd look at the corner store and one of the greater selection of beer and wine I've seen in a market. The staff is really great - they really do seem to love working there, as other people have mentioned. They really do remember their regulars, and even the new faces get friendly small talk. Chansky's is everything you could want in your local convenience store. The staff is incredibly friendly. They remember their regulars and are always up for a chat. Recently I was in the store and was saying outloud that I wish that they carried my favorite brand of gummi bears. One of the guys behind the counter wrote it down and said that he would ask the big man about ordering it. Next time I was in the store, he told me he'd asked and that they might be carrying my favorite gummis soon. Gotta love it. The beer and wine selection is great and for those of you who like redneck booze, they carry Sparks and Andre--which is really, in my eyes, a great great thing. The prices are a bit steep, but that's the risk you run with any convenience store. The first week of September, Chansky's gives new customers who spend over $25 a free t-shirt to say "Welcome to the Neighborhood".
